Chapter 9

The Recording They Couldn't Destroy

The truth has a strange way of surviving.

People can bury documents.

They can erase names.

They can rewrite history.

They can convince the world that a lie is reality.

But there is always something left behind.

A witness.

A memory.

A piece of evidence hidden somewhere nobody thinks to look.

For the Moretti family...

That evidence was a recording.

A recording someone had spent twenty years trying to destroy.

The first thing Alessandro did after learning Victor Hale was alive was return to the Moretti mansion.

Not because he felt safe there.

Because he knew the answers were there.

The mansion had witnessed everything.

Every betrayal.

Every secret.

Every lie.

The old family archive was located beneath the west wing.

A place even most employees didn't know existed.

Only the heads of the Moretti family had access.

Matteo Moretti had created it himself.

He believed one thing:

A family that forgets its history is a family that repeats its mistakes.

Alessandro entered the archive with Clara, Luca, and Detective Reynolds.

The atmosphere was heavy.

For years, this room had protected the truth.

Now...

It was finally releasing it.

"Your father knew something would happen."

Clara whispered.

Alessandro looked at her.

"How?"

"Because he prepared."

Inside the archive were thousands of documents.

Business records.

Family letters.

Private recordings.

Photographs.

Everything Matteo believed might one day be needed.

Luca walked through the room silently.

For the first time, he looked less like an enemy.

More like someone visiting a grave.

"He kept everything."

Luca touched an old bookshelf.

"Even things about me."

Alessandro watched him.

"Why didn't you come back?"

Luca stopped.

The question hung between them.

"Because I thought everyone wanted me gone."

His voice was quiet.

"I thought Father chose you because he hated me."

Alessandro looked away.

"You never asked."

Luca laughed sadly.

"No."

A pause.

"I spent twenty years being angry because it was easier than admitting I was hurt."

Before Alessandro could answer...

Detective Reynolds called out.

"Mr. Moretti."

Everyone turned.

He held a small black box.

"Look at this."

It was old.

Damaged.

Almost destroyed.

But still intact.

"What is it?"

"A voice recorder."

Clara's face changed.

"No..."

The detective looked at her.

"You know this?"

She slowly nodded.

"Your father had one."

Alessandro took the recorder.

His hands tightened.

"Why is this important?"

Clara swallowed.

"Because that was the recorder Matteo carried the night he died."

Silence.

The battery was dead.

The device looked useless.

But Detective Reynolds had already restored the data.

"There is one file."

He connected it.

Everyone gathered around.

At first...

Only static.

Then footsteps.

A door opening.

A man's voice.

Matteo Moretti.

Alessandro froze.

Twenty years.

Twenty years since he heard his father's voice.

"If you are listening to this..."

Matteo's voice was tired.

"But I am no longer here."

Alessandro closed his eyes.

"I was right about Marco."

Everyone looked at each other.

"He has been stealing from the company."

Matteo continued.

"But that is not the most dangerous thing."

A pause.

"He is trying to control Luca."

Luca stopped breathing.

"He knows Luca's anger."

Matteo continued.

"He knows Luca feels forgotten."

Alessandro looked at his brother.

"And he will use that pain to destroy him."

The recording continued.

"If anything happens to me, Alessandro..."

A long pause.

"Do not hate your brother."

Luca looked down.

"He is not the enemy."

Those words broke something inside him.

For twenty years, Luca had carried the belief that Matteo had chosen Alessandro because he was loved more.

But now...

He heard the truth.

"Find Luca."

Matteo's voice became weaker.

"Tell him I never abandoned him."

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Luca turned away.

His shoulders shook.

Not from anger.

From regret.

"He thought about me."

His voice cracked.

"All this time..."

"He thought about me."

Alessandro looked at him.

For the first time, he saw his brother not as a threat.

But as someone who had been carrying the wrong story for twenty years.

Then the recording continued.

A hidden second file appeared.

Detective Reynolds frowned.

"There's another recording."

They played it.

This time...

The voice was different.

Cold.

Confident.

Victor Hale.

"Matteo, you should have accepted the offer."

Everyone froze.

Matteo's voice answered:

"You underestimate my sons."

Victor laughed.

"No."

"I understand them perfectly."

A pause.

"One son is too loyal."

"One son is too angry."

Victor's voice became darker.

"And both are easy to manipulate."

Luca closed his eyes.

Because he finally understood.

Victor had not destroyed him by force.

He had destroyed him by giving him someone to hate.

The recording continued.

"Once Matteo is gone, Alessandro will inherit the company."

Victor said.

"And Luca will blame him."

A cold silence filled the room.

"And when brothers destroy each other..."

Victor laughed.

"The empire will belong to me."

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

For twenty years...

Victor Hale had watched.

Waiting.

But there was one problem.

He had made one mistake.

He underestimated Emma.

Because while everyone was focused on the recording...

Emma, who had been sitting quietly nearby, pointed toward the screen.

"That's the man."

Everyone looked at her.

"What man?"

Alessandro asked.

"The man in the picture."

Emma said.

"The one behind Grandpa."

Alessandro felt his heart stop.

"What did you say?"

Emma pointed at the photograph of Matteo's final night.

"I saw him before."

"Where?"

Emma looked confused.

"At Vanessa's house."

The room went silent.

Because that meant only one thing.

Victor Hale was not hiding.

He had been close.

Very close.

And suddenly, the entire plan became clear.

The fake pregnancy.

The attacks.

The kidnapping.

The return of Luca.

Everything.

Victor wasn't trying to destroy the Moretti empire.

He was trying to inherit it.

That night, Alessandro made one decision.

No more hiding.

No more protecting secrets.

No more running from the past.

He gathered his security team.

"We find Victor Hale."

Luca looked at him.

"Together?"

Alessandro paused.

Twenty years ago, they were brothers divided by a lie.

Now...

They had the same enemy.

"Together."

But neither brother knew...

Victor had already made his next move.

Because while they searched for him...

He was already inside their world.

And the person standing beside him...

May you like

Was someone Alessandro trusted completely.
