CHAPTER 1 — THE LOCKED BALLROOM

THE BILLIONAIRE’S HEIR THEY TRIED TO FAKE

CHAPTER 1 — THE LOCKED BALLROOM

The doors locked with a sound nobody in that ballroom would ever forget.

Not because it was loud.

Because it was final.

The massive double doors at the entrance of the Moretti mansion clicked shut one after another.

Security.

Two men in black suits moved into position beside the doors.

Another two blocked the terrace entrance.

The guests who had been laughing only moments earlier slowly lowered their glasses.

The celebration had stopped.

The performance was over.

And for the first time that night, everyone understood something.

Alessandro Moretti was no longer attending a party.

He was conducting an investigation.

Vanessa Cole stared at him.

For the first time since she entered the ballroom, her confidence disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Alessandro noticed.

He noticed everything.

That was why people feared him.

Not because he was violent.

Not because he controlled one of the largest private companies on the East Coast.

Because Alessandro Moretti saw the smallest cracks in the strongest lies.

A trembling hand.

A delayed answer.

A glance toward the wrong person.

A breath held too long.

"Alessandro," Vanessa said softly.

Her voice returned.

Sweet.

Fragile.

Perfect.

"Are you really doing this?"

The room watched.

Everyone expected him to comfort her.

After all, she was supposed to be carrying his child.

The future mother of the Moretti heir.

The woman everyone had just celebrated.

But Alessandro did not look at Vanessa.

He looked at the woman standing behind the marble column.

The maid.

The woman who had spent three years cleaning his home.

The woman whose name most guests did not even know.

"Your name."

The command was quiet.

The woman froze.

She swallowed.

"Clara Bennett, sir."

A few guests exchanged amused looks.

Of course.

The maid.

The invisible person.

The person everyone assumed had no power.

Alessandro walked toward her.

Not aggressively.

Slowly.

The entire ballroom watched.

Clara immediately lowered her eyes.

"I apologize, Mr. Moretti."

"Why?"

The question surprised her.

"I shouldn't have interrupted your announcement."

Alessandro studied her.

"That wasn't my question."

Clara looked up.

For a moment, he saw something he recognized.

Fear.

Not the fear of punishment.

The fear of losing everything.

"Why are you apologizing?"

Clara's lips parted.

But no words came.

Because she knew the truth.

Poor people apologized differently.

They apologized for speaking.

For asking.

For existing in rooms where powerful people gathered.

"I don't want trouble," she whispered.

Alessandro's expression changed slightly.

"Neither does your daughter."

Clara looked toward Emma.

The little girl was still holding onto her mother's dress.

Her small fingers tightly gripping the fabric.

And then something happened nobody expected.

Alessandro knelt again.

The most powerful man in the room lowered himself to a child's level.

"Emma."

The little girl looked at him.

"Can you show me the closet?"

Clara immediately stepped forward.

"Sir—"

Alessandro raised one hand.

Not angry.

Just stopping the panic before it began.

"Clara."

She froze.

"If your daughter is wrong, nothing happens."

A pause.

"But if she is right..."

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

"...someone has been lying to me."

The room became colder.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

She turned toward the guests.

"Everyone here knows me. They know who I am."

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had just seen something.

Alessandro Moretti was not defending her.

That was the first crack.

Five minutes later, the ballroom doors opened again.

The group moved through the east hallway.

Emma walked between Alessandro and Clara.

Holding both their hands.

A strange picture.

The billionaire.

The maid.

The child.

The people watching did not know it yet.

But that small child was about to destroy an entire empire of lies.

The east staircase led to Vanessa's private suite.

The most expensive room in the mansion.

Imported furniture.

Hand-painted walls.

A closet larger than most apartments.

Vanessa stopped outside the door.

"No."

Everyone turned.

She placed a hand over her stomach.

"I don't want strangers searching through my personal belongings."

Alessandro looked at her.

"Strangers?"

A pause.

"This is my house."

Her face tightened.

"You don't trust me?"

The question was carefully designed.

Not an accusation.

A trap.

If he said no, he looked cruel.

If he said yes, he looked foolish.

But Alessandro Moretti had survived because he never answered the question people wanted him to answer.

"I trust evidence."

The hallway went silent.

Vanessa stepped back.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

Security opened the door.

The search began.

Everyone waited.

Seconds passed.

Then minutes.

Nothing.

Vanessa slowly smiled.

A small victory.

"Are we finished?"

She looked at Clara.

"Perhaps we should discuss consequences for making accusations."

Clara's face went pale.

She knew what happened to people like her.

People who accused people like Vanessa.

Then Emma spoke.

"Not that closet."

Everyone stopped.

The child pointed.

"Behind the dresses."

A security officer looked at Alessandro.

He nodded.

The officer moved toward the far end of the closet.

Behind dozens of expensive gowns.

Behind designer coats.

Behind a row of shoes that cost more than Clara's yearly salary.

There was a small locked cabinet.

Vanessa's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

The officer opened it.

Inside was a white box.

With small flowers printed across the side.

The exact flowers Emma described.

Nobody spoke.

The officer lifted the box.

The room felt like it lost oxygen.

Alessandro walked closer.

Slowly.

He opened the lid.

Inside was a silicone pregnancy prosthetic.

A realistic artificial belly.

Along with medical padding.

A fake ultrasound envelope.

And a receipt.

The date.

Six weeks earlier.

The same week Vanessa announced she was pregnant.

A guest whispered:

"Oh my God."

Another covered her mouth.

Vanessa stood completely still.

The woman who had controlled the entire room.

The woman who had received applause.

The woman who had announced Alessandro's heir.

Had no words.

Alessandro picked up the receipt.

His face became unreadable.

"Explain."

One word.

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at the guests.

Then back at him.

And something inside her changed.

The tears disappeared.

The softness disappeared.

What remained was anger.

"You want an explanation?"

Her voice became colder.

"Fine."

She stepped closer.

"You want to know why I did this?"

Everyone froze.

Clara looked confused.

Emma held tighter to her mother's hand.

Vanessa smiled.

But there was no warmth left.

"Because you were never going to choose me."

Alessandro stared.

"What?"

Vanessa laughed.

"You think I didn't notice?"

Her eyes moved toward Clara.

"You hired her."

A pause.

"You protected her."

Clara froze.

"You let a nobody and her child live under your roof."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"This is about Clara?"

Vanessa's smile widened.

"No."

She looked directly at him.

"This is about what she has."

Silence.

"What does she have?" Alessandro asked.

Vanessa's answer changed everything.

"The one thing you never gave me."

A pause.

"Your trust."

The hallway went silent.

Because beneath the lie...

There was another truth.

Vanessa had not only been trying to fake a pregnancy.

She had been fighting someone.

Someone she believed had already won.

Clara.

The maid.

The woman who had no idea she was standing at the center of a war she never started.

And before the night ended...

Alessandro Moretti would discover something even more dangerous than a fake heir.

He would discover that the woman he trusted least...

May you like

was the person who knew the most about the enemies hiding inside his own house.
