CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LIE

THE BILLIONAIRE’S HEIR THEY TRIED TO FAKE

CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LIE

The truth was never as simple as the evidence.

That was the first lesson Alessandro Moretti learned after the night his engagement collapsed.

Everyone believed the box had answered everything.

The fake pregnancy belly.

The receipt.

The hidden cabinet.

A perfect lie exposed by a child who could barely pronounce some words correctly.

To the guests who remained in the mansion that night, the story was already finished.

Vanessa Cole had lied.

Alessandro Moretti had been betrayed.

The maid and her daughter had become accidental heroes.

But Alessandro knew better.

People did not build lies that large without a reason.

And they did not destroy themselves without a plan.

The ballroom was empty now.

The champagne glasses remained on the tables.

The flowers were still arranged perfectly.

The musicians had packed away their instruments.

But the celebration was gone.

The room looked like a crime scene after everyone had left.

Alessandro stood alone near the window, watching the rain fall over the gardens.

Three hundred people had watched his world change in less than ten minutes.

He should have been angry.

He should have felt humiliated.

Instead, he felt something much worse.

Confused.

Because Vanessa's lie made sense.

But not completely.

"Sir."

Alessandro turned.

His head of security, Marco Bellini, stood at the entrance.

"Talk."

Marco walked inside and placed a folder on the table.

"I reviewed the security footage."

Alessandro opened it.

"What did you find?"

Marco hesitated.

That alone caught Alessandro's attention.

Marco had worked for the Moretti family for twelve years.

He had seen shootings, betrayals, and corporate wars.

He was not a man who hesitated.

"Someone helped her."

Alessandro looked up.

"Vanessa?"

Marco nodded.

"The pregnancy announcement wasn't planned only six weeks ago."

He opened the folder.

"She started preparing months earlier."

Photos.

Records.

Transactions.

Everything organized.

Alessandro studied the documents.

Fake medical appointments.

Private consultations.

A rented storage unit.

Someone had invested a lot of money into the deception.

"This wasn't a desperate woman pretending to be pregnant."

Marco said quietly.

"This was an operation."

Alessandro closed the folder.

"Find out who financed it."

Marco nodded.

Then paused.

"There is something else."

"What?"

"The closet."

Alessandro looked at him.

"What about it?"

"The lock was changed yesterday."

A cold silence filled the room.

"Yesterday?"

Marco nodded.

"Someone knew we might search it."

Alessandro understood immediately.

Someone had known.

Someone inside the house.

Upstairs, Clara Bennett sat beside Emma's bed.

The little girl was finally asleep.

Her fever had returned.

Clara gently brushed her daughter's hair away from her face.

The events of the night kept replaying in her mind.

The ballroom.

The accusation.

The way hundreds of people looked at her.

The way Vanessa called her "the help."

She had survived difficult moments before.

But this was different.

Because now her secret was exposed.

Not the secret Vanessa thought.

Something else.

Three years ago, Clara came to the Moretti mansion with nothing.

No family.

No money.

No future.

Only a baby and a promise.

A promise she made to her husband before he died.

Daniel Bennett had always believed the truth mattered.

Even when the truth was dangerous.

Especially then.

"You can't keep quiet forever, Clara."

Daniel's voice still lived in her memories.

"We can't let powerful people decide what happens to everyone else."

She remembered laughing.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was afraid.

"Daniel, powerful people don't lose."

He had looked at her and smiled.

"Then maybe someone has to remind them that they can."

Two weeks later, he died.

Officially:

A construction accident.

But Clara knew better.

Daniel had discovered something.

Something connected to the Moretti family.

Something worth killing for.

She had spent three years hiding.

Working quietly.

Raising Emma.

Keeping the promise.

Until tonight.

The bedroom door opened.

Alessandro stood there.

Clara immediately stood.

"Sir."

"You should sit."

She looked surprised.

The billionaire who had just been betrayed was telling her to sit.

Not accusing her.

Not questioning her.

She slowly sat.

"Emma is sleeping."

"I know."

A silence followed.

Then Alessandro asked:

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Clara knew exactly what he meant.

"The pregnancy?"

"The box."

She lowered her eyes.

"I was afraid."

"Of me?"

A painful smile appeared.

"No."

"Then who?"

Clara looked toward her daughter.

"People like Vanessa."

Alessandro watched her.

"You knew she was lying."

"I suspected."

"Why?"

Clara hesitated.

Because telling the truth meant revealing everything.

"Because I saw things."

"What things?"

"She received packages."

"She made phone calls."

"She asked questions about your schedule."

Alessandro frowned.

"Why didn't you report it?"

Clara looked at him.

"Would you have believed me?"

The question hit harder than she intended.

Because she knew the answer.

A maid accusing a wealthy woman?

A woman engaged to Alessandro Moretti?

The world usually believed the person wearing diamonds.

Not the person cleaning them.

"I should have."

Alessandro said.

Clara looked surprised.

"I should have created a place where people could tell me the truth."

For the first time that night, she saw something different in him.

Not the billionaire.

Not the feared businessman.

Just a man realizing he had missed something important.

"Mr. Moretti..."

"Alessandro."

She stopped.

"Call me Alessandro."

Clara looked away.

That felt more dangerous than any accusation.

Because trust was harder to survive than hatred.

The next morning, Vanessa disappeared.

Not physically.

Her security team remained.

Her belongings remained.

Her lawyers remained.

But Vanessa herself changed.

The crying fiancée was gone.

The elegant woman from the gala was gone.

She became a fighter.

Her lawyers released a statement:

"Miss Cole suffered an emotional breakdown after being publicly humiliated. The evidence found does not prove criminal intent."

The media immediately reacted.

Some defended her.

Some attacked her.

Some blamed Alessandro.

But then something unexpected happened.

A photograph appeared online.

A photograph of Clara.

Holding Emma.

Leaving the Moretti mansion.

The headline appeared everywhere:

MORETTI HEIR'S FIANCÉE BETRAYED BY HOUSEKEEPER?

Alessandro stared at the screen.

His expression turned cold.

Because he recognized the tactic.

Someone was trying to turn Clara into the villain.

The same way Vanessa had done in the ballroom.

But this time...

Alessandro was ready.

"Marco."

His security chief answered immediately.

"Yes, sir?"

"Find who leaked that photo."

A pause.

"And Marco?"

"Sir?"

"Nobody touches Clara or Emma."

The command was clear.

Because Alessandro Moretti had spent his life protecting his empire.

Now he had something else to protect.

The truth.

That evening, Alessandro received an anonymous envelope.

No name.

No return address.

Inside was one photograph.

Daniel Bennett.

His dead employee.

Standing beside someone Alessandro recognized immediately.

Vanessa Cole.

But the photograph was dated five years earlier.

Before Vanessa entered his life.

Before the fake pregnancy.

Before the engagement.

On the back of the photograph were six words:

ASK WHO REALLY KILLED HER HUSBAND.

Alessandro stared at the message.

And for the first time, he realized something terrifying.

Vanessa's fake baby was never the biggest lie.

May you like

It was only the first one.
