CHAPTER 7 — THE DAUGHTER WHO REMEMBERED

THE BILLIONAIRE’S HEIR THEY TRIED TO FAKE

CHAPTER 7 — THE DAUGHTER WHO REMEMBERED

Memory was a strange thing.

Adults believed memories disappeared when time passed.

They believed children forgot.

They believed things said in whispers, things witnessed from the corner of a room, things seen through half-closed eyes could never matter.

They were wrong.

Children did not always remember everything.

But they remembered what made them feel afraid.

They remembered voices.

Faces.

The feeling of someone holding their hand too tightly.

And sometimes...

they remembered the one moment that could destroy a lifetime of lies.

Emma Bennett was three years old.

To most people, that meant she was too young to understand the war happening around her.

Too young to understand why adults stopped smiling when she entered a room.

Too young to understand why cameras followed her mother.

Too young to understand why the beautiful woman in the red dress looked at her like she was an enemy.

But Emma remembered.

The morning after Vanessa's television interview, Alessandro found her sitting on the floor of the family room.

She was arranging wooden blocks.

A castle.

A small one.

With a little figure standing outside the gate.

Alessandro watched from the doorway.

For a moment, he forgot about business.

Forgot about Vanessa.

Forgot about the secrets buried inside his family.

He only saw a child.

A child who had somehow become the center of everything.

"Emma."

The little girl looked up.

"Mr. Alessandro."

He smiled slightly.

She still called him that.

Even after he asked her not to.

"What are you building?"

She looked at the blocks.

"My house."

Alessandro knelt beside her.

"Your house?"

Emma nodded.

"Where Mama and me live."

Something about the answer hurt.

Because for years, Emma's idea of home had never included safety.

Only survival.

"Can I ask you something?"

Emma nodded.

"About the night of the party."

Her little hands stopped moving.

"The pretty dress lady?"

"Yes."

She looked down.

"She was mad."

"Why?"

Emma shrugged.

"Because she saw me."

Alessandro became still.

"What do you mean?"

Emma touched one of the blocks.

"She told the man not to let me see."

The room changed.

"What man?"

Emma looked confused.

"The man who brought the box."

Alessandro's heartbeat increased.

"Emma, did you see him?"

She nodded.

"Before the party."

"When?"

"When Mama was cleaning."

Alessandro looked toward the hallway.

Clara.

She had never mentioned this.

"Where did you see him?"

Emma pointed toward the east hallway.

"The closet room."

That was impossible.

The closet room had been Vanessa's private area.

A place staff were not supposed to enter.

"Emma."

Alessandro spoke carefully.

"Can you tell me what he looked like?"

She thought.

Children didn't describe people like adults.

They remembered details.

"He had a shiny watch."

"What else?"

"A scar."

"Where?"

Emma touched her neck.

"Here."

Alessandro froze.

A scar on the neck.

Suddenly, a name appeared in his mind.

Someone he had not thought about in years.

That afternoon, Alessandro called Marco.

"Find every employee and visitor connected to the mansion in the last six months."

Marco nodded.

"Anyone specific?"

"Everyone with a scar on their neck."

Meanwhile, Clara was facing the truth she had spent years running from.

Alessandro found her in the garden.

The same garden where his mother used to walk.

"You heard Vanessa."

Clara nodded.

"Yes."

"She knows about my mother."

Clara said nothing.

"She knows because you told her."

It wasn't an accusation.

But it sounded like one.

Clara looked at him.

Pain crossed her face.

"I never told Vanessa."

"Then how does she know?"

Silence.

Finally, Clara sat on the stone bench.

"Because Vanessa was there."

Alessandro stopped.

"Where?"

"When your mother died."

The world seemed to slow.

"What?"

Clara looked at the mansion.

"She wasn't your father's friend."

A pause.

"She was your father's assistant."

Alessandro's face changed.

"Vanessa?"

"No."

Clara shook her head.

"Her mother."

The pieces moved.

The Cole family.

The missing money.

The investigation.

The fake pregnancy.

It all connected to a history older than Vanessa herself.

"Why did nobody tell me?"

Clara's eyes softened.

"Because your father made sure nobody did."

That evening, Marco returned.

He looked serious.

"I found him."

Alessandro turned.

"The man from the footage?"

Marco nodded.

"His name is Victor Hale."

Alessandro frowned.

"I don't know that name."

"You should."

Marco placed a file down.

"Victor Hale worked for your father twenty years ago."

Alessandro opened the file.

Former security specialist.

Private investigator.

Corporate fixer.

And then:

Status: Missing.

"Missing since when?"

"Eight years ago."

The same year Alessandro's mother died.

Before Alessandro could respond, Emma entered the room.

She carried a drawing.

"Mr. Alessandro."

He looked at her.

"What is it?"

She handed it to him.

A child's drawing.

A house.

A woman.

A man.

A little girl.

And another man standing outside.

Alessandro looked closer.

The man had a scar drawn across his neck.

His blood ran cold.

"Emma..."

"Yes?"

"When did you see this man?"

She tilted her head.

"Before Mama cried."

Alessandro looked at Clara.

"What does she mean?"

Clara went pale.

Because she remembered.

The night Daniel died.

The night someone followed her home.

The night she ran to the Moretti mansion for protection.

"Clara."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Tell me."

She closed her eyes.

"The man Emma saw..."

A pause.

"He was the last person Daniel talked to before he died."

Silence.

Alessandro stared at the drawing.

The child everyone underestimated had remembered the one detail everyone missed.

The scar.

The face.

The man behind the lies.

That night, Alessandro returned to his office.

On his desk was a new envelope.

No name.

No address.

Inside was a single photograph.

Victor Hale.

Alive.

Standing beside someone else.

Someone Alessandro recognized.

His own father.

On the back of the photograph were seven words.

"YOUR FAMILY CREATED THIS MONSTER."

Alessandro stared at the message.

Because now he understood.

Vanessa was not the beginning.

The fake pregnancy was not the beginning.

The closet was not the beginning.

The beginning was his family.

And the daughter everyone ignored...

May you like

was the only person who remembered where it started.
