CHAPTER 9 — THE DEAD MAN’S FILE

THE BILLIONAIRE’S HEIR THEY TRIED TO FAKE

CHAPTER 9 — THE DEAD MAN’S FILE

The dead always left something behind.

Sometimes it was a photograph.

Sometimes a letter.

Sometimes a name whispered by someone who was too afraid to speak while they were alive.

But Daniel Bennett had left something different.

A file.

A collection of evidence so dangerous that people had spent years trying to erase the man who created it.

And now that file was finally coming back into the light.

The Moretti family cemetery sat on the highest hill behind the estate.

A place built to remind the world of power.

Massive stone monuments.

Perfectly trimmed gardens.

Names carved into marble.

Generations of Morettis resting beneath the ground.

Alessandro had walked through those gates hundreds of times.

But never like this.

Not searching for answers.

Not wondering which of the names belonged to monsters.

The rain had returned.

Again.

It seemed every secret in the Moretti family surfaced under a storm.

Marco stood beside the cemetery entrance.

"You are sure he's here?"

Alessandro asked.

Marco nodded.

"The security cameras caught him entering two hours ago."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

Alessandro looked toward the graves.

"Victor Hale wants me to find him."

Marco frowned.

"Why would a man who disappeared for eight years suddenly want to be found?"

Alessandro didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

People who disappeared were usually running away.

But people who returned?

They were usually coming back for revenge.

They found Victor near the oldest section of the cemetery.

He stood in front of a grave.

Older.

Smaller.

Forgotten.

Not a Moretti grave.

A simple stone.

Alessandro stopped.

The name carved into it made his chest tighten.

ELENA MORETTI

His mother.

But that was impossible.

Her official grave was on the other side of the cemetery.

The one where he had visited every year.

The one his father had shown him.

This was a second grave.

A hidden one.

Victor turned.

For a moment, Alessandro saw the man Emma described.

The scar.

The cold eyes.

The person who had haunted every secret surrounding his family.

"You're older."

Victor said.

Alessandro's expression remained cold.

"You disappeared."

"I survived."

"Same thing?"

Victor almost smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"Disappearing is a choice."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"You worked for my father."

"Yes."

"You knew my mother."

"Yes."

"You know what happened to her."

Victor looked at the hidden grave.

"I know what they wanted people to believe."

The answer angered Alessandro.

"Stop speaking in riddles."

Victor looked at him.

"Your father didn't kill your mother."

Silence.

Alessandro wasn't expecting that.

"Then who did?"

Victor reached inside his coat.

Marco immediately moved.

But Victor only pulled out a small black folder.

Old.

Damaged.

He handed it to Alessandro.

"Daniel Bennett found this before he died."

Alessandro froze.

"How do you have it?"

"Because Daniel trusted the wrong person."

The words hit harder than expected.

"Who?"

Victor looked toward the mansion in the distance.

"Someone who still lives there."

Alessandro opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Bank transfers.

Private agreements.

Photographs.

The first page showed a company.

Cole International Holdings.

The second showed payments.

Millions transferred through fake accounts.

The third page stopped Alessandro completely.

A photograph.

Vanessa Cole's father.

And beside him...

Alessandro's uncle.

Lorenzo Moretti.

Working together.

"No."

Alessandro whispered.

Victor watched him.

"Your uncle was not protecting your family."

A pause.

"He was protecting himself."

The file continued.

Daniel had discovered that Lorenzo and the Cole family had been secretly moving money from Moretti companies for years.

But that was not the worst part.

Daniel had also found evidence that someone inside the family ordered the destruction of records.

And the person who gave the order?

A name covered in black ink.

But underneath the ink...

A signature.

Lorenzo Moretti.

Alessandro closed the folder.

His hands tightened.

"Why didn't Daniel bring this to me?"

Victor's expression changed.

"Because he tried."

Alessandro looked up.

"What?"

"Daniel contacted you."

"No."

"Yes."

Victor stepped closer.

"He sent messages. Emails. Letters."

Alessandro shook his head.

"I never received anything."

"Exactly."

The truth hit him.

Someone had intercepted everything.

Someone had controlled what reached him.

Someone had controlled his entire reality.

"Who?"

Victor looked at him.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

"The Moretti family has spent years asking the wrong question."

A pause.

"You keep asking who betrayed you."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"You should ask who benefited from everyone believing the betrayal came from outside."

That night, Alessandro returned to the mansion with the file hidden inside his coat.

He did not tell anyone.

Not Marco.

Not Clara.

Not even his closest security team.

Because for the first time, he understood something terrifying.

The enemy was not outside the walls.

The enemy had keys.

Clara noticed immediately.

"You found him."

Alessandro looked at her.

"Yes."

"And?"

"He gave me something Daniel left behind."

Clara went pale.

"The file."

"You knew about it?"

She hesitated.

"I knew Daniel was creating one."

"But you didn't know where it was?"

"No."

Alessandro studied her.

There was no deception.

Only fear.

"Clara."

"Yes?"

"Did my mother know about this?"

Clara looked away.

"Yes."

His jaw tightened.

"How much?"

"Everything."

The answer destroyed the last piece of the life he understood.

His mother knew.

His father knew.

His uncle knew.

Clara knew.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except him.

Later that night, Alessandro entered his father's old study.

A room untouched since his death.

A room nobody entered.

He searched through the shelves.

The desk.

The hidden drawers.

Then he found something.

A recording device.

Old.

Hidden beneath the wooden panel.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then a voice.

His mother's voice.

"Alessandro..."

His entire body froze.

"I don't know when you will hear this."

A shaky breath.

"But if you are listening, it means they failed to stop the truth."

Silence.

Then the sentence that changed everything.

"Your father was not the person who destroyed this family."

A pause.

"He was trying to save it from someone worse."

The recording ended.

Alessandro stood completely still.

Because once again, the truth had changed shape.

The villain he had been searching for...

might have been the only person trying to protect him.

And somewhere inside the Moretti mansion...

someone was listening too.

Because the moment the recording stopped...

Alessandro's office phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A familiar voice whispered:

"Stop digging."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Lorenzo."

Silence.

Then his uncle spoke.

"You have no idea what your mother discovered."

A pause.

"And if you continue..."

The voice became colder.

"You will lose the only family you have left."

The call ended.

Alessandro looked at the dead man's file.

Then at the recording.

Then toward the room where Clara and Emma slept.

Because now he understood.

This was no longer an investigation.

It was a war.

And the first casualty of that war had already been buried.

May you like

Daniel Bennett.
