CHAPTER 3 — THE MAID’S SECRET

THE BILLIONAIRE’S HEIR THEY TRIED TO FAKE

CHAPTER 3 — THE MAID’S SECRET

Secrets were dangerous things.

Not because they were hidden.

Because they waited.

A secret could survive for years inside a person.

Through fear.

Through silence.

Through impossible choices.

But eventually, someone always asked the one question that forced it into the light.

Why didn't you tell me?

That question haunted Clara Bennett more than anything else.

Because she had asked herself the same thing every night for three years.

Why did she stay silent?

Why did she keep working inside the Moretti mansion?

Why did she protect a family connected to the tragedy that destroyed her own?

The answer was simple.

Emma.

Everything Clara did was for her daughter.

The morning after the gala, the Moretti mansion felt different.

The servants walked quietly.

The security team moved constantly.

The atmosphere was no longer one of luxury.

It was suspicion.

Everyone was watching everyone.

Because when a powerful family discovered betrayal, nobody felt safe.

Clara prepared breakfast for Emma in the small staff kitchen.

She cut strawberries into tiny pieces.

Exactly the way Emma liked.

The little girl sat at the table, swinging her legs.

"Mama?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Is the pretty dress lady angry?"

Clara stopped cutting.

Children noticed emotions adults tried to hide.

"Maybe."

"Did I make her sad?"

The question broke Clara's heart.

She knelt beside her daughter.

"No, Emma."

She touched her cheek.

"You told the truth."

"But everybody looked mad."

Clara smiled sadly.

"Sometimes people get angry when the truth comes out."

Emma thought about that.

Then asked:

"Why?"

Clara had no answer.

Not one a three-year-old should hear.

Because some people built their entire lives on lies.

And when those lies collapsed...

they blamed whoever revealed them.

At ten that morning, Alessandro asked Clara to come to his office.

The room was larger than her entire apartment before she moved into the servant quarters.

Dark wood.

Floor-to-ceiling windows.

A view of the city.

Everything about it reminded her of the difference between their worlds.

Alessandro stood behind his desk.

The photograph of Daniel was still there.

Clara saw it immediately.

Her face changed.

"You found it."

Alessandro noticed.

"You know this picture."

Silence.

That was enough.

"Clara."

His voice was calm.

But serious.

"Tell me the truth."

She looked at the photograph.

Then away.

"I can't."

Alessandro's expression hardened slightly.

"Can't?"

"Not because I don't want to."

A pause.

"Because I promised."

"To who?"

Clara said nothing.

Alessandro walked around the desk.

Not threatening.

Just trying to understand.

"Three years ago, your husband died."

Clara's eyes lowered.

"Yes."

"The accident involved one of my companies."

Her silence confirmed it.

"But you never sued."

"No."

"Why?"

Clara looked at him.

And for the first time, Alessandro saw the anger she had buried.

Not weakness.

Anger.

"Because people like me don't win against people like you."

The words were quiet.

But they hit harder than shouting.

Alessandro didn't respond.

Because he knew there was truth in them.

"What did Daniel find?"

Clara looked toward the window.

Rain had started again.

Like the night everything changed.

"Your father."

Alessandro froze.

"My father died eight years ago."

"I know."

"Then explain."

Clara took a deep breath.

"Daniel was a safety inspector."

"He discovered that construction reports were being changed."

"Workers were being sent into dangerous conditions."

Alessandro listened carefully.

"He found documents."

"What documents?"

"Payments."

A pause.

"Payments from companies connected to the Moretti family."

The room became silent.

Alessandro looked away.

"You think my family killed him."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

The answer surprised him.

"I think someone used your family name."

"Someone?"

She nodded.

"Daniel was investigating a person inside the Moretti organization."

"Who?"

Clara's hands tightened.

"I don't know."

Alessandro noticed something.

She was lying.

Not about knowing.

About something else.

"You know more."

Clara looked at him.

"I know enough to know Emma was not safe."

Three years earlier.

The memory returned.

Daniel came home late.

His shirt was torn.

His face bruised.

Clara remembered dropping the baby bottle in her hand.

"What happened?"

Daniel locked the door.

Checked the windows.

Then whispered:

"They know."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Daniel, what are you talking about?"

He took a small flash drive from his pocket.

"Someone will come looking for this."

Clara stared.

"What's on it?"

"The reason people died."

The next day, Daniel was dead.

Clara returned to the present.

Alessandro was still watching her.

"You have the flash drive."

It was not a question.

Her face changed.

"How do you know?"

"Because people don't protect something for three years unless they still have it."

Silence.

Then Clara whispered:

"Yes."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

"I hid it."

"Why didn't you give it to the police?"

Clara looked at him.

"Because the police officer who came to Daniel's accident scene was the same person who later warned me to stop asking questions."

A cold feeling moved through Alessandro.

Corruption.

Inside.

"Who was he?"

Clara shook her head.

"I never knew his name."

Then she added:

"But he wore a Moretti security badge."

The room went completely silent.

Alessandro turned away.

Because now the truth was becoming clearer.

This was not just about Vanessa.

This was not just about a fake pregnancy.

Someone had been using the Moretti name for years.

And Clara Bennett had been carrying the evidence the entire time.

That afternoon, Alessandro ordered a complete internal investigation.

Every employee.

Every department.

Every security record.

But before the investigation could begin...

A message arrived.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

ASK YOUR MAID WHY SHE REALLY CAME TO YOUR HOUSE.

Alessandro stared at the screen.

Because suddenly another possibility appeared.

What if Clara wasn't only a witness?

What if she had entered his mansion with a purpose?

That evening, Alessandro found Clara packing.

"You're leaving."

She froze.

"I have to."

"Why?"

Her eyes filled with fear.

"Because they know."

"Who?"

Clara looked at him.

"The people who killed Daniel."

A pause.

"They know I have the evidence."

Before Alessandro could answer, the mansion lights went out.

Darkness covered the house.

Then came a sound.

A single gunshot.

From inside the mansion.

Everyone froze.

Alessandro reached for Clara.

And for the first time...

he wasn't protecting his empire.

May you like

He was protecting the woman who might destroy it.
