CHAPTER 8 — THE MORETTI FAMILY SHADOW

THE BILLIONAIRE’S HEIR THEY TRIED TO FAKE
CHAPTER 8 — THE MORETTI FAMILY SHADOW
Every powerful family had a story they told the world.
The Morettis told theirs through success.
A family built from nothing.
A name that survived generations.
A business empire created through intelligence, discipline, and sacrifice.
That was the story printed in magazines.
The story repeated at charity events.
The story Alessandro had believed his entire life.
But every empire had another story.
One whispered behind closed doors.
One hidden in old documents.
One buried beneath the foundations of the buildings that carried the family name.
And Alessandro Moretti was finally beginning to uncover his.
The photograph remained on his desk.
His father.
Victor Hale.
The woman Alessandro once called his mother.
Three people standing together.
Three people connected to a secret that had lasted decades.
For years, Alessandro believed his father was a complicated man.
Cold.
Demanding.
Obsessed with control.
But he never believed him to be cruel.
Now he wasn't sure.
"Your father had enemies."
Lorenzo Moretti said.
Alessandro looked up.
His uncle stood in the doorway.
The same calm expression.
The same controlled voice.
But Alessandro noticed something different.
Fear.
"You knew."
It was not a question.
Lorenzo did not answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
"You knew about Victor Hale."
Lorenzo walked into the office.
"You don't understand what you are looking at."
"Then explain."
A long silence.
Finally, Lorenzo sat down.
"Your father built the Moretti empire during a dangerous time."
Alessandro laughed quietly.
"That sounds like the beginning of every excuse powerful men use."
Lorenzo accepted the criticism.
"Maybe it is."
The honesty surprised Alessandro.
"Your grandfather was not a businessman."
A pause.
"He was a survivor."
Alessandro listened.
"He built relationships with people who controlled the city."
"Politicians."
"Investors."
"People who could make problems disappear."
"Like Victor Hale?"
Lorenzo looked away.
"Victor was hired because he knew how to solve problems."
Alessandro's expression hardened.
"Problems?"
"Threats."
The word stayed in the room.
The Moretti family had not built their empire only with contracts.
They built it with fear.
"Did my father know?"
Alessandro asked.
Lorenzo looked at him.
"Your father knew everything."
The answer hurt more than Alessandro expected.
Because he remembered his father differently.
A man who taught him discipline.
A man who told him that reputation was everything.
A man who always said:
"A Moretti never loses control."
Now Alessandro wondered:
Was that wisdom?
Or a warning?
Meanwhile, Vanessa Cole was running out of options.
Her interview had failed.
She expected the public to turn against Clara.
Instead, Alessandro had remained silent.
And silence from Alessandro Moretti was dangerous.
Because it meant he was thinking.
Vanessa sat in a private apartment across the city.
Not her own.
One provided by someone who promised protection.
But protection had limits.
Her phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"You said everything would work."
The voice on the other side was cold.
"It would have if you followed instructions."
Vanessa's anger rose.
"I was supposed to marry him."
"No."
A pause.
"You were supposed to control him."
The words made her freeze.
"Control?"
"Alessandro Moretti was never the goal."
Silence.
"Then what was?"
The answer came quietly.
"The company."
Vanessa finally understood.
She had never been the queen.
She had only been a piece on someone else's board.
Back at the mansion, Alessandro called Clara into his office.
She knew immediately something had changed.
"What happened?"
He placed the photograph on the desk.
"Tell me everything about Victor Hale."
Clara looked at the image.
Her face lost color.
"You found him."
"No."
A pause.
"Not yet."
Clara sat down.
"Victor Hale was dangerous."
"How?"
"He wasn't loyal to people."
She looked at Alessandro.
"He was loyal to whoever paid him."
"Who paid him?"
Clara hesitated.
"Your father."
The words landed heavily.
"Why?"
"Because Victor knew secrets."
"What secrets?"
Clara looked at the photograph.
"The kind that could destroy families."
She told him about the night Daniel died.
About the missing files.
About the documents Daniel found.
But she left one thing out.
The biggest secret.
Alessandro noticed.
"You are still hiding something."
Clara looked at him.
"I promised your mother."
"My mother is dead."
"I know."
"Then why are you still protecting her?"
Clara's eyes filled.
"Because she protected me first."
The answer stopped him.
"What did she do?"
Clara looked toward the window.
"She saved Emma."
Alessandro froze.
"Emma?"
Clara nodded.
"Before she died, your mother discovered someone wanted to use my daughter."
"Why?"
"Because Emma was proof."
"Proof of what?"
Clara whispered:
"That the Moretti family had another heir."
Silence.
Alessandro felt the world shift.
"Another heir?"
Clara nodded.
"Your mother discovered a child who had been erased from the family records."
"Who?"
Clara looked at him.
"Me."
The room became completely silent.
Alessandro could barely process the words.
"You're saying..."
"Your mother was my protector."
A pause.
"Not because I worked here."
"Because I was family."
Alessandro stood.
"No."
Clara's expression broke.
"I know it's difficult."
"No."
He shook his head.
"I mean no because if that is true..."
He looked at the photograph.
"...then my entire life has been built on a lie."
That night, Alessandro searched the old family archives.
Hours passed.
Until he found it.
A document hidden beneath his father's private records.
A birth certificate.
The name had been blacked out.
But the date was visible.
The same date as Clara Bennett's birth.
At the bottom was one signature.
His father's.
And beside it...
A handwritten note.
"The girl must disappear. The family cannot know."
Alessandro stared.
Because now he understood the real enemy.
Not Vanessa.
Not Victor.
Not even the people who lied.
The enemy was the shadow his family had carried for generations.
A shadow created by people who believed power mattered more than people.
Before he could continue, his phone rang.
Marco.
"Sir."
His voice was urgent.
"We found Victor Hale."
Alessandro stood.
"Where?"
A pause.
"He is not hiding."
"Where is he?"
Marco answered:
"At the Moretti family cemetery."
Alessandro's blood went cold.
"Why?"
Marco's voice lowered.
"Because someone buried a secret there."
A pause.
"And Victor Hale is waiting for you to find it."
Alessandro looked at Clara.
The past had finally returned.
And this time...
May you like
it was not asking permission to enter.
