CHAPTER 17 — THE TRUTH ABOUT DANIEL’S DEATH

THE BILLIONAIRE’S HEIR THEY TRIED TO FAKE

CHAPTER 17 — THE TRUTH ABOUT DANIEL’S DEATH

Death was never the end of a story.

Sometimes, it was the beginning.

For three years, everyone believed Daniel Bennett was just another victim.

A man caught in the wrong place.

A worker killed in an unfortunate accident.

A husband who left behind a grieving wife and a daughter too young to understand why her father never came home.

That was the story written in official records.

The story printed on paperwork.

The story powerful people wanted everyone to believe.

But Daniel Bennett had never been just a victim.

He had been a witness.

And witnesses were dangerous.

Alessandro stood in the small cottage, staring at Clara.

Lorenzo's final words echoed in his mind.

"The person you trust most."

For the first time since discovering the truth, Alessandro felt uncertain.

Not because he believed Clara had betrayed him.

But because he realized someone had carefully designed this moment.

Someone wanted him to doubt her.

Someone wanted the family divided again.

"Tell me about Daniel."

Alessandro said.

Clara looked at him.

Her expression changed immediately.

Pain.

Not fear.

Pain.

"Why now?"

"Because everyone has used his name."

A pause.

"Lorenzo."

"My father."

"The company."

"Everyone except the man himself."

Clara looked toward Emma's room.

"Daniel deserved the truth."

She sat down slowly.

"Daniel was not supposed to work for the company."

Alessandro frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"He was an engineer."

"A good one."

"He discovered problems with a Moretti construction project."

Alessandro's expression changed.

"The waterfront project?"

Clara nodded.

"The one that made billions."

Years earlier.

Daniel Bennett had been hired to inspect structural safety reports.

At first, he believed he had found normal corporate negligence.

Shortcuts.

Missing inspections.

Cheap materials.

The kind of corruption that existed everywhere.

But then he discovered something worse.

The failures were intentional.

Someone had approved dangerous construction methods to increase profit.

People could have died.

And someone had covered it up.

"Daniel reported it."

Clara whispered.

"To who?"

Alessandro asked.

"Your father."

Silence.

Alessandro looked away.

"My father knew?"

"Yes."

"What did he do?"

Clara closed her eyes.

"At first..."

She hesitated.

"He tried to fix it."

That answer surprised Alessandro.

"He tried?"

"Your father wasn't the same man everyone thought he was."

Clara looked at him.

"He made terrible decisions."

"But he wasn't willing to let innocent people die."

"Then why did Daniel die?"

Clara's hands tightened.

"Because someone else found out Daniel knew too much."

Alessandro returned to the dead man's file.

The documents inside were incomplete.

Pages missing.

Names removed.

But one thing remained.

A recording.

An audio file Daniel had hidden.

They played it together.

Static filled the room.

Then Daniel's voice appeared.

"If anyone finds this..."

He sounded tired.

But determined.

"It means I wasn't able to finish what I started."

Clara covered her mouth.

She had never heard this before.

"The person who ordered the cover-up isn't who everyone thinks."

Alessandro leaned forward.

"I originally believed the order came from the top."

A pause.

"I was wrong."

The recording continued.

"The person protecting the corruption is someone inside the Moretti family."

Alessandro and Clara looked at each other.

"But the person who tried to kill me..."

Static.

Then Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Was not Lorenzo."

Alessandro froze.

The recording stopped.

"No."

Alessandro whispered.

"That can't be."

Clara looked at him.

"Your father?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"Then who?"

Before they could answer, the device suddenly played another hidden file.

A second recording.

One they didn't know existed.

Daniel's voice again.

"If Alessandro ever hears this..."

Alessandro froze.

"I need you to know something."

A long pause.

"Your father tried to save me."

The room became silent.

"He knew I was in danger."

"He offered protection."

"But he was too late."

Alessandro closed his eyes.

Because the truth was becoming clearer.

His father was not the monster.

He was another person trapped inside the same machine.

Then Daniel said the final words.

"The person who killed me was someone who believed the Moretti family belonged to them."

A breath.

"Someone who thought blood was more important than love."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Until Emma appeared.

"Mommy?"

Clara immediately stood.

"Sweetheart, why are you awake?"

Emma looked at Alessandro.

"I remembered something."

Everyone froze.

Alessandro knelt.

"What did you remember?"

Emma held her rabbit tightly.

"The night Daddy left."

Clara went pale.

"Emma..."

"I saw him talking to someone."

"Who?"

The little girl thought carefully.

"The man who smelled like Grandpa's office."

Alessandro's heartbeat changed.

"Grandpa's office?"

Emma nodded.

"The man who had the shiny ring."

Clara whispered:

"Lorenzo."

But Emma shook her head.

"No."

Everyone stopped.

"The other man."

The next morning, Alessandro returned to the Moretti estate.

He went directly to the old security archives.

If Daniel was killed inside the family...

there had to be a record.

A visitor log.

A camera.

Something.

After hours of searching, Marco found it.

An old security image.

From the night Daniel died.

A man entering the Moretti private office.

The face was unclear.

But the ring was visible.

A family ring.

The same ring worn by only one person.

Alessandro stared.

Because the person in the image was not Lorenzo.

Not Victor.

Not Vanessa.

It was someone everyone believed was dead.

Someone who should never have been there.

His father.

The screen went black.

Alessandro stepped back.

The truth had finally appeared.

But instead of giving him peace...

It created a bigger question.

If his father was at the scene of Daniel's death...

was he the protector?

Or the killer?

May you like

And why had a dead man been hiding the truth for eight years?
