Chapter 1 – The Second Injector

Chapter 1 – The Second Injector

“Did the doctors find the second injector?”

Michael’s voice echoed through the hospital room.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Detective Sarah Collins.

Not even Lily.

My eight-year-old daughter was lying in the hospital bed, her small hand wrapped around mine, her face still pale from the allergic reaction that nearly took her life.

But all I could hear was my brother’s question.

The second injector.

Those three words changed everything.

Because Michael should not have known about it.

Nobody should have known.

The Secret Backup

When Lily was diagnosed with her peanut allergy at the age of two, Anna became the most careful mother in the world.

She studied every label.

She spoke with every teacher.

She trained every babysitter.

She carried emergency medication everywhere.

After one terrifying incident at a restaurant, Anna made a decision.

“We always carry two.”

I remembered asking her why.

“One is for the emergency.”

She held up the second injector.

“And one is for when life decides the first one isn’t enough.”

At the time, I thought she was being overly cautious.

Now I realized Anna had always been right.

The first injector was the one I carried in my jacket.

The one Evelyn somehow removed.

The second one was hidden inside Lily’s medical bag.

A place only a few people knew about.

Me.

Anna.

And Michael.

The Brother Who Saved Me

That was the hardest part.

Michael was not some stranger.

He wasn't a distant relative.

He was my little brother.

After Anna died two years ago, Michael was the person who kept me standing.

I remember the first night after the funeral.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

I sat alone in the kitchen, staring at a cup of coffee I never drank.

Michael sat across from me.

“You don’t have to pretend you’re okay.”

I looked at him.

“I have to be okay for Lily.”

He nodded.

“And I’ll help you.”

He did.

At least, I thought he did.

He made breakfast.

He drove Lily to school.

He attended parent meetings.

He became the person I trusted most.

But now...

I wondered if all of that had been an act.

The Call

I lifted the phone back to my ear.

“Michael.”

“Yes?”

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“How did you know about the second injector?”

Silence.

A short silence.

But a revealing one.

“I don’t understand what you mean.”

“You asked if they found the second injector.”

“I heard someone mention it.”

“Who?”

Another pause.

“Daniel, what is this?”

His voice changed.

Now he sounded hurt.

Like I was the one attacking him.

“I’m your brother.”

There it was again.

Family.

The word he always used when he wanted me to stop questioning him.

I looked at Detective Collins.

She shook her head slightly.

Keep him talking.

So I continued.

“Who told you?”

Michael sighed.

“You’re really going to do this?”

“Do what?”

“Accuse me?”

I almost laughed.

Accuse him?

My daughter nearly died.

My mother-in-law was arrested.

And my brother knew information he shouldn't know.

But somehow...

I was the problem.

“I need to go.”

“Daniel.”

His voice became lower.

“Be careful who you trust.”

The irony almost made me angry.

Almost.

Because the person saying those words was the person I trusted most.

I ended the call.

The Evidence

Detective Collins waited until the line disconnected.

Then she spoke.

“He knows.”

I stared at her.

“You think he was involved?”

She didn't answer immediately.

That worried me.

“I think your brother knew enough to be dangerous.”

She opened the folder on the table.

Inside were the documents found in Evelyn’s briefcase.

The custody petition.

The financial requests.

The signatures.

I had already seen them.

But Detective Collins pointed to another page.

“This was attached.”

I looked closer.

A timeline.

Dates.

Events.

Plans.

The first entry was written two months after Anna died.

Begin custody preparation.

The second:

Establish Daniel as unstable.

The third:

Gain access to trust assets.

My hands tightened.

“This was made two years ago?”

Detective Collins nodded.

“They weren’t planning today.”

She looked at Lily.

“They were planning everything.”

Lily Remembers

A small voice interrupted us.

“Dad?”

I immediately turned.

“I'm here, sweetheart.”

Lily looked nervous.

“Are we going to lose our house?”

My heart broke.

“No.”

“Are they going to take me?”

I moved closer.

“Never.”

She looked toward the door.

“Grandma said something.”

“What?”

“She said
”

Lily swallowed.

“She said you were making things difficult.”

I felt anger rise.

“What else?”

“She said Uncle Michael would know what to do.”

The room became silent.

Detective Collins looked at me.

“You need to tell me everything about your brother.”

I wanted to defend him.

I wanted to say:

You don't understand.

He's not like that.

But the words wouldn't come.

Because suddenly...

I remembered things I had ignored.

The Questions Michael Asked

Six months after Anna died, Michael asked:

“Do you know exactly how much Lily inherited?”

I thought it was a normal question.

He was family.

Two months later:

“What happens if something happens to you?”

I laughed.

“Nothing is going to happen.”

He smiled.

“Of course.”

Then:

“Who becomes Lily’s guardian?”

I answered:

“Probably Anna’s sister.”

Michael looked surprised.

“Not me?”

I remembered the way he said it.

Not hurt.

Not joking.

Testing.

Anna’s Hidden Message

Detective Collins pulled out another envelope.

“This was found in your wife's personal files.”

I froze.

“Anna?”

She nodded.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My wife’s handwriting.

The moment I saw it, my chest tightened.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, something has happened that I feared.

I don't want you to panic.

I don't want you to hate anyone without proof.

But please listen carefully.

There is someone close to us who wants access to Lily's trust.

Someone who knows how much we love them.

Someone who knows we would never expect betrayal.

My hands started shaking.

I already knew the next line before reading it.

Trust actions.

Not words.

Not promises.

Not family titles.

Actions.

I lowered the paper.

“Anna knew.”

Detective Collins nodded.

“She was afraid.”

The Unexpected Arrival

A knock came at the door.

Everyone turned.

A nurse stood outside.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“There is someone asking to see you.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

The nurse hesitated.

“Your brother.”

Detective Collins immediately stood.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“He shouldn’t know this room number.”

I looked at the door.

Then slowly...

It opened.

Michael stepped inside.

His expression was perfect.

Concerned.

Worried.

Almost believable.

“Daniel.”

I said nothing.

His eyes moved toward Lily.

“How is she?”

I stepped between them.

“Why are you here?”

His expression changed.

“Because I love my niece.”

“Do you?”

The question surprised him.

For the first time...

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Daniel.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“But I need an answer.”

“How did you know about the second injector?”

The room froze.

Michael looked at Detective Collins.

Then at Lily.

Then back at me.

And slowly...

The mask disappeared.

“You really think you understand what happened today?”

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Michael stepped closer.

“You think Evelyn attacked Lily because she wanted money?”

I didn't answer.

Michael smiled sadly.

“You’re still looking at the wrong person.”

Detective Collins reached for her radio.

“Explain.”

Michael looked directly at me.

“She was never the one controlling this.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Then who was?”

Michael walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped.

And said:

“The person who benefits most when you lose everything.”

The door closed.

I stood there frozen.

Then Detective Collins received a notification on her phone.

She read it.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Daniel
”

“What happened?”

She turned the screen toward me.

It was a hospital security alert.

Someone had accessed Lily’s medical records.

The account used was not Evelyn’s.

Not a stranger’s.

Not even Michael’s.

It belonged to me.

My own hospital login.

Someone had stolen my identity.

And they had accessed Lily’s file fifteen minutes before Michael called.

Detective Collins looked at the screen.

“This is bigger than custody.”

She lowered her voice.

“Someone is trying to erase the truth.”

I looked at my daughter.

Then at the closed door where Michael had disappeared.

And for the first time...

May you like

I wondered if the man who betrayed me had been protecting someone else all along.
