Chapter 13 – The Real Mastermind

Chapter 13 – The Real Mastermind

The room felt smaller.

Everyone was waiting.

Me.

Sarah.

Amelia.

Even the silence seemed to be waiting.

Because Amelia knew something that could change everything.

The person who destroyed my family.

The person who manipulated Victor.

The person who caused Anna’s death.

The person who had been hiding behind every lie.

I looked at Amelia.

“Say the name.”

Her hands trembled.

She looked toward Lily’s room.

Then whispered:

“Anna’s father.”

I froze.

“What?”

Amelia closed her eyes.

“Edward Carter.”

The name hit me harder than I expected.

My father.

The man who had died years before Anna.

The man everyone believed had built our family empire honestly.

The man who was supposed to be gone.

“That’s impossible.”

Amelia shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“That’s exactly why he was dangerous.”

The Man Behind the Legacy

My father.

Edward Carter.

A respected businessman.

A man whose photograph hung in company offices.

A man whose name was attached to scholarships, buildings, and charities.

Everyone remembered him as a visionary.

A leader.

A father.

But Amelia had a different story.

“Edward created the first version of the Guardian Foundation.”

I stared.

“The foundation?”

“Yes.”

“But Victor runs it.”

“Victor only runs what Edward built.”

I felt sick.

All this time, everyone thought Victor was the beginning.

He wasn't.

He was an employee.

A successor.

A person carrying out someone else's plan.

The Secret Agreement

Amelia placed another document on the table.

An old contract.

The signature at the bottom was unmistakable.

Edward Carter.

The agreement was between my father and the Guardian Foundation.

I read carefully.

The document described a private arrangement.

A system designed to control family assets.

Inheritance.

Companies.

Trusts.

Everything.

“This is illegal.”

Amelia nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why would my father do this?”

She looked at me.

“Because he believed money was more important than people.”

I thought about my childhood.

The business dinners.

The long nights.

The way my father always measured success.

Never by happiness.

Only by power.

Anna’s Discovery

“Anna found this?”

Amelia nodded.

“She discovered your father never destroyed the foundation records.”

She pointed toward the document.

“He hid them.”

“Where?”

“In the one place nobody would search.”

“Where?”

Amelia looked at me.

“Inside the Carter family trust.”

My heart sank.

The hidden trust.

The one Anna protected.

The one everyone was fighting over.

It wasn't just money.

It was evidence.

Why Lily Was the Target

Suddenly everything made sense.

The inheritance.

The custody battle.

The identity questions.

Victor wasn't trying to steal Lily’s money.

He was trying to access the records hidden inside the trust.

Anna had protected them.

Then after her death...

Everyone came for Lily.

Because Lily was the key.

“She knew,” I whispered.

Amelia nodded.

“Anna knew the only way to expose them was to protect the trust until Lily was old enough.”

“And me?”

“You were the guardian.”

I looked away.

Anna had trusted me.

Even when I thought she hadn't.

The Final Betrayal From Michael

The door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Michael stood there.

Alive.

Exhausted.

Holding a folder.

Sarah immediately moved toward him.

“Don’t move.”

Michael stopped.

But he didn't look at Sarah.

He looked at me.

“I found it.”

I stared.

“You disappeared.”

“I had to.”

“You stole the evidence.”

“I protected it.”

I almost laughed.

“After everything you did, you expect me to believe you?”

Michael looked down.

“No.”

The answer surprised me.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

He held out the folder.

“But I need you to see this.”

I didn't move.

Amelia stepped forward.

“Daniel.”

She looked at Michael.

“He’s telling the truth.”

I stared at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because he found the same thing I did.”

Edward Carter’s Final Plan

I opened the folder.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

A letter written years before his death.

The first sentence made my blood freeze.

If you are reading this, then my family has failed to protect what I built.

I continued.

The Carter name will survive only if the right person controls the future.

My hands tightened.

The letter wasn't an apology.

It was a confession.

Edward admitted creating a system where family members would fight for control.

He believed conflict revealed strength.

He intentionally created conditions where people would betray each other.

Because he thought betrayal was proof of ambition.

My father had created the monster.

Everyone else simply inherited it.

The Person Who Killed Anna

But one question remained.

“Who killed Anna?”

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael answered.

“I know.”

Everyone looked at him.

“I found the original recording.”

Sarah stepped forward.

“What recording?”

“The parking garage.”

My heart stopped.

The night Anna died.

The night I supposedly met her.

Michael opened a laptop.

A video appeared.

Security footage.

Old.

Grainy.

But clear enough.

Anna entered the garage.

She was carrying documents.

Then someone approached.

I leaned closer.

My breath stopped.

Because I knew the person.

The person Anna was speaking to.

The person who argued with her.

The person who took the documents.

It was not Victor.

It was not Michael.

It was not Sarah.

It was...

The Impossible Truth

The screen froze.

Everyone stared.

Because the person standing beside Anna...

Was Edward Carter.

My dead father.

Impossible.

I looked at Michael.

“What is this?”

He looked terrified.

“I don’t know.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“Edward died ten years ago.”

The room became silent.

Then Amelia whispered:

“That isn't Edward.”

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the screen.

“Look closer.”

We zoomed in.

The face.

The posture.

The clothes.

Everything looked familiar.

But wrong.

Then Amelia said:

“That is Edward’s brother.”

My blood ran cold.

“My uncle?”

She nodded.

“The man who disappeared before you were born.”

The Man Who Never Left

The name came back.

A name I had heard only once as a child.

A name my father never allowed anyone to mention.

Richard Carter.

The forgotten brother.

The man erased from family history.

The man who wanted everything Edward had.

The man who had been controlling the foundation from the shadows.

Amelia looked at me.

“He never died.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Where is he?”

Nobody answered.

Then Sarah received a message.

She read it.

Her face turned pale.

“Daniel
”

“What?”

She looked at Lily’s room.

“He knows.”

My blood froze.

“Who?”

Sarah whispered:

“Richard Carter.”

A second message arrived.

This time, it was sent directly to me.

Only five words.

Bring me the trust, Daniel.

Then another message appeared.

Or you lose Lily.

The nightmare wasn't over.

May you like

It had finally reached the person who started it.
