Chapter 8 â The Chase

Chapter 8 â The Chase
The courtroom doors closed behind us.
Too quickly.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The second thing was the silence.
A room full of people.
Judges.
Lawyers.
Reporters.
Family members.
And yet it felt like the entire world had stopped breathing.
Because everyone was waiting for one thing.
The decision.
The decision that could take Lily away from me.
Detective Collins looked at me.
âWe need more time.â
I almost laughed.
More time.
That was all we had been asking for.
More time to prove the truth.
More time to expose the lies.
More time to protect my daughter.
But powerful people didn't give you time.
They took it.
The Emergency Hearing
Victor Hale sat across the room.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Not a single sign of fear.
That frightened me more than anger would have.
People who are desperate make mistakes.
People who believe they have already won don't.
Beside him sat his legal team.
Expensive attorneys.
People who had probably handled cases exactly like this before.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
Then the hearing began.
Victor's attorney spoke first.
âYour Honor, this case is not about punishment.â
He paused.
âIt is about protecting a child.â
I felt my jaw tighten.
Those words.
Protecting a child.
The same words Michael used.
The same words Evelyn used.
The same words everyone used before trying to take Lily from me.
The attorney continued.
âMr. Carter has become involved in a dangerous situation involving poisoning, family conflict, and financial disputes.â
He looked toward me.
âThe environment around this child has become unstable.â
I wanted to stand.
I wanted to tell everyone the truth.
But Sarah held my arm.
âWait.â
Because she knew.
The truth needed proof.
Not emotion.
The Perfect Victim
Victor stood.
âI never wanted to be involved in this.â
His voice was gentle.
Almost fatherly.
âI respected Anna Carter.â
A few people nodded.
That was his talent.
Making people believe he cared.
âAfter her death, I watched this family collapse.â
He looked at me.
âAnd I believe Daniel Carter has been manipulated by grief.â
My hands tightened.
âHe is a loving father.â
A pause.
âBut love is not always enough.â
The courtroom became quiet.
Because that sentence sounded reasonable.
It sounded like concern.
It sounded like wisdom.
That was the most dangerous kind of lie.
Lilyâs Voice
Then the judge asked the question everyone feared.
âWhere is the child?â
My heart stopped.
Detective Collins looked at me.
âLily is at home.â
The judge frowned.
âWhy is she not present?â
âBecause she has experienced significant trauma.â
Victorâs lawyer immediately responded.
âOr because Mr. Carter does not want her questioned.â
The accusation hit.
Hard.
The judge looked at me.
âMr. Carter, is there a reason your daughter is not here?â
I stood.
âYes.â
Everyone looked at me.
âBecause she is eight years old.â
My voice shook.
âBecause someone tried to use her.â
Silence.
I continued.
âShe almost died.â
I looked at Victor.
âAnd now the same people who created this situation want everyone to believe I caused it.â
For a moment...
I thought people listened.
Then Victor spoke.
Quietly.
âDaniel.â
Everyone turned.
âI understand your pain.â
That sentence made me angry.
Because he didn't.
He had no idea.
âBut anger cannot replace evidence.â
And that was the problem.
He was right.
The Flash Drive
Detective Collins finally stepped forward.
âYour Honor, we have new evidence.â
The room changed.
Victor looked at her.
Not surprised.
That scared me.
He already knew.
Sarah connected the drive.
The screen displayed documents.
Financial transfers.
Messages.
Recorded conversations.
Everything Michael had collected.
The first file showed payments from Victor's companies.
To Michael.
The courtroom reacted.
The second showed Evelyn.
The third showed the charity foundation.
Then the fourth file appeared.
A conversation.
Michaelâs voice.
Victorâs voice.
The recording played.
Victor:
âYou don't need to understand the entire plan.â
Michael:
âWhat happens after Daniel loses custody?â
Victor:
âThe trust transfers.â
Michael:
âAnd Lily?â
Victor:
âShe becomes a legal formality.â
The room exploded.
The judge demanded silence.
Victor's expression finally changed.
Only slightly.
But it was enough.
Fear.
The Escape
Before anyone could continue...
The courtroom doors opened.
A police officer entered.
âDetective Collins.â
She turned.
âWhat happened?â
The officer whispered something.
Sarahâs face changed.
âWhat?â
She immediately looked at me.
âMichael escaped.â
My heart dropped.
âWhat?â
âHe was being transported for questioning.â
âHow?â
âSomeone interfered with the transfer.â
Victor suddenly stood.
âThat has nothing to do with me.â
Everyone looked at him.
Too quickly.
Too defensively.
Sarah noticed.
So did I.
Because innocent people don't immediately explain what they didn't do.
The Missing Piece
Outside the courtroom, reporters surrounded us.
Questions everywhere.
But I only heard one thing.
Michael escaped.
The man who knew everything.
The man who could expose Victor.
The man who could destroy the entire operation.
Was gone.
Detective Collins pulled me aside.
âThereâs something you need to know.â
âWhat?â
âBefore Michael disappeared, he sent one message.â
âTo who?â
She looked at me.
âTo you.â
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
From Michael.
Only a few words.
They know about the recording.
Then another message appeared.
They are coming for Lily.
My blood froze.
I immediately called home.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
Detective Collins grabbed her phone.
âWeâre leaving.â
The Race Home
The drive felt endless.
Every red light.
Every second.
Every car.
Everything was too slow.
I kept calling.
No answer.
Finally, the house appeared.
The front door was open.
My heart stopped.
âLily!â
I ran inside.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
The living room was empty.
Then I heard something.
A sound upstairs.
I ran.
âLily!â
I reached her room.
She was there.
Standing beside the bed.
Holding something.
âDad.â
I grabbed her.
âAre you okay?â
She nodded.
âIâm okay.â
I looked around.
âWho came here?â
She pointed toward the desk.
A small envelope sat there.
My name was written on it.
Not Michaelâs handwriting.
Not Annaâs.
Someone elseâs.
I opened it.
Inside was one photograph.
A photograph of Anna.
Taken the night before she died.
On the back was a message.
You are chasing the wrong enemy.
My hands shook.
Then I turned the picture over.
Anna was standing beside someone.
Someone I had never seen before.
Someone who was not Michael.
Not Victor.
Not Sarah.
A stranger.
But beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
Ask your daughter who this person is.
I looked at Lily.
Her face changed.
Because she recognized the person.
âDadâŠâ
Her voice trembled.
âIâve seen him before.â
My heart stopped.
âWhere?â
She pointed at the photograph.
âMom was afraid of him.â
I looked closer.
And suddenly I understood.
The enemy had been closer than any of us realized.
Because the person in the photograph...
Was not watching Anna.
May you like
He was watching Lily.
