Chapter 9 â The Truth About Anna

Chapter 9 â The Truth About Anna
The photograph trembled in my hand.
Not because I was afraid of the stranger in the picture.
Not because I didn't know who he was.
But because I knew what the photograph meant.
Anna had known.
She had known someone was watching our family.
She had known someone dangerous was close.
And she had tried to protect us without telling me.
I looked at Lily.
Her small face was filled with fear.
âSweetheartâŠâ
I knelt beside her.
âYou said youâve seen this person before.â
She nodded slowly.
âWhere?â
She looked at the photograph again.
âAt Momâs funeral.â
My heart stopped.
The Stranger at the Funeral
Two years earlier.
The worst day of my life.
The day Anna was buried.
I remembered everything.
The rain.
The flowers.
The people pretending they knew what to say.
The endless condolences.
But I didn't remember this man.
I remembered Michael standing beside me.
I remembered Evelyn crying.
I remembered Sarah Collins, who had come briefly after the funeral.
But not him.
âLily, are you sure?â
She nodded.
âHe stood far away.â
âHow do you remember him?â
She looked down.
âBecause Mom saw him.â
My breath caught.
âWhat do you mean?â
Lily touched the photograph.
âMom looked scared when she saw him.â
Annaâs Fear
Detective Collins arrived minutes later.
When she saw the picture, her expression changed.
âYou know him?â
I watched her carefully.
âDo you?â
Sarah took the photograph.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then:
âYes.â
My heart sank.
âWho is he?â
She looked at me.
âHis name is Adrian Vale.â
The name meant nothing.
But the way Sarah said it meant everything.
âWho is he?â
Sarah placed the photo down.
âHe was Annaâs private security consultant.â
I frowned.
âSecurity?â
âYes.â
âWhy did my wife need security?â
Sarah hesitated.
That hesitation told me there was another secret.
âBecause Anna believed she was being followed.â
I stared at her.
âWhen?â
âMonths before her death.â
I felt anger rising.
âAnd nobody told me?â
Sarah looked away.
âAnna asked us not to.â
The words hit me.
Not us.
Not the police.
Not Michael.
Not even me.
Anna had been afraid enough to hide things from everyone.
The Hidden Investigation
Sarah explained.
After discovering unusual activity around her company shares, Anna hired Adrian Vale to investigate.
âHe was supposed to find out who was accessing her private accounts.â
âAnd?â
âHe found Victor.â
I looked confused.
âThen why wasn't Victor arrested?â
Sarahâs expression became darker.
âBecause Adrian discovered something bigger.â
âWhat?â
âHe discovered Victor wasn't acting alone.â
I already knew the answer.
âMichael.â
Sarah nodded.
âBut there was someone else.â
âWho?â
She looked at the photograph.
âSomeone inside Annaâs own company.â
The Woman Behind the Trust
Before we could continue, Rachel Morgan arrived.
She looked at the photograph.
Immediately, her face changed.
âYou found him.â
I turned.
âYou know Adrian?â
Rachel nodded.
âHe helped Anna.â
âThen why didnât you tell me?â
Rachel looked guilty.
âBecause Anna told me not to.â
I almost laughed.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone was protecting something.
Except me.
I was the only person living in a story everyone else already knew.
âWhy?â
Rachel sighed.
âBecause Anna believed the more people who knew the truth, the more danger Lily would be in.â
She looked at my daughter.
âAnd she was right.â
Annaâs Final Investigation
Rachel opened another folder.
Inside were documents Anna had collected.
Emails.
Financial reports.
Meeting records.
At the center was one name.
Adrian Vale.
I looked confused.
âWhy is his name here?â
Rachel answered:
âBecause Adrian found something Anna never expected.â
âWhat?â
âHe discovered Victor Hale was planning to use Lilyâs inheritance to hide illegal financial activity.â
My stomach turned.
âLilyâs money?â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Lily was protected.â
I looked at the trust documents.
Anna had built walls around her daughterâs future.
âShe created the trust so nobody could touch it.â
Rachel nodded.
âBut Victor found a weakness.â
âWhat weakness?â
She looked at me.
âYou.â
I felt sick.
âMe?â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âBecause if they could prove you were an unfit father, they could replace you as trustee.â
Everything connected.
The poisoning.
The custody case.
The lies.
The public humiliation.
It was never about taking Lily away.
It was about taking control of what Anna protected.
The Night Anna Died
I looked at Sarah.
âTell me what happened.â
Nobody answered.
Finally, Rachel spoke.
âThe night Anna died, she was meeting Adrian.â
âWhy?â
âShe had discovered the final piece of evidence.â
âWhat evidence?â
Rachel hesitated.
âShe discovered who Victorâs partner was.â
My heart raced.
âWho?â
Rachel looked at me.
âSomeone you know.â
The room went silent.
âWho?â
Before Rachel could answer, Sarahâs phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
âWhat?â
She listened.
Then:
âNo.â
She looked at me.
âWhere?â
A pause.
âI'm coming.â
She ended the call.
âWhat happened?â
Sarah looked at Rachel.
âAdrian Vale was found.â
âAlive?â
She nodded.
âBut injured.â
âWhere?â
âThe same parking garage where Anna was last seen.â
My blood ran cold.
The place where Anna died.
The place where I apparently met her.
The place where everything started.
Adrianâs Secret
We arrived at the hospital thirty minutes later.
Adrian was awake.
Barely.
When he saw me, his eyes widened.
âDaniel Carter.â
His voice was weak.
âYouâre Annaâs husband.â
âYes.â
He looked terrified.
âI thought they killed you too.â
My stomach tightened.
âWho?â
Adrian looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
âYour wife was not killed because of money.â
I moved closer.
âThen why?â
His eyes filled with fear.
âBecause Anna discovered the truth about Lily.â
I froze.
âWhat truth?â
Adrian struggled to speak.
âThe girl you think is your daughterâŠâ
My heart stopped.
âNo.â
He closed his eyes.
âThe records were changed.â
The room went silent.
Detective Collins stepped forward.
âWhat are you saying?â
Adrian looked at me.
âDanielâŠâ
His voice broke.
âAnna found out someone switched Lilyâs birth records.â
I couldn't breathe.
âNo.â
Adrian whispered:
âLily is not connected to your family the way you believe.â
Everything stopped.
The walls.
The sounds.
The world.
My daughter.
The child I had raised.
The child I loved more than my own life.
I looked through the hospital glass.
Lily was sitting with Rachel.
Laughing softly.
Completely unaware.
Then Adrian said the sentence that destroyed everything I thought I knew.
May you like
âAnna was trying to protect Lily from the people who knew her real identity.â
