Chapter 10 – The Public Trial

Chapter 10 – The Public Trial

The words followed me everywhere.

Lily is not connected to your family the way you believe.

I heard them in the hospital hallway.

I heard them in the car.

I heard them when I closed my eyes.

But the worst moment was when I looked at Lily.

Because nothing had changed.

She was still the same little girl who called me Dad.

The same child who held my hand when she was scared.

The same child who slept with the light on after her mother died.

Blood could explain biology.

But it could never erase love.

At least, that was what I wanted to believe.

The Question No Father Wants Answered

Adrian Vale survived the night.

But he refused to explain everything until he had protection.

“Why?”

I asked.

He looked exhausted.

“Because the people who changed those records are still powerful.”

“Victor?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Michael?”

Again, no.

Then who?

Adrian looked toward Lily.

“The person who knows the truth about Lily has been hiding in plain sight.”

The answer terrified me.

Because everyone around me had secrets.

Everyone had lied.

And now my daughter’s identity had become another battlefield.

The Courtroom Returns

The next morning, the custody hearing continued.

But this time, everything was different.

The media had arrived.

Hundreds of cameras surrounded the courthouse.

The story had become national.

A wealthy family.

A poisoned child.

A hidden inheritance.

A dead wife.

A custody battle.

Everyone wanted a villain.

And Victor Hale gave them one.

Me.

Victor’s Final Attack

Inside the courtroom, Victor looked calm.

Almost sympathetic.

His attorney stood.

“Your Honor, we believe Mr. Carter has created chaos around this child.”

The screen behind them showed headlines.

Father Accused of Hiding Daughter’s True Identity

My stomach dropped.

“What is this?”

Detective Collins looked shocked.

Someone had leaked Adrian’s statement.

Not the truth.

Only the most damaging part.

The part saying Lily’s records were changed.

The part that made me look like a father hiding something.

The lawyer continued.

“Mr. Carter knew questions existed about Lily’s identity.”

“That is a lie,” I said.

The judge looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, you will have a chance to respond.”

The attorney continued.

“Yet he never informed the court.”

Because I didn't know.

But that didn't matter.

The public had already decided.

The Perfect Monster

Victor stood.

“I do not want to take Lily from her father.”

A pause.

“I want to protect her.”

Again.

That phrase.

Protect.

He used it like a weapon.

“She has been surrounded by secrets, conflict, and danger.”

He looked at me.

“And unfortunately, Mr. Carter is at the center of it.”

The cameras outside would love that sentence.

A simple headline.

A simple story.

The grieving father who couldn't protect his own daughter.

My Turn

The judge looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, do you wish to respond?”

I stood.

My hands shook.

But my voice didn't.

“Yes.”

The courtroom became silent.

“I am not perfect.”

I looked at Lily.

“I have made mistakes.”

A pause.

“I have been angry.”

Another pause.

“I have been afraid.”

I looked back at the judge.

“But everything I have done was because I love my daughter.”

The room was quiet.

“I lost my wife.”

My voice cracked.

“But I promised Anna one thing.”

I looked at Lily.

“That I would never stop protecting our child.”

Then Victor interrupted.

“Your Honor, emotional statements do not answer the evidence.”

I turned toward him.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

“But lies do.”

The Hidden Recording

Detective Collins stepped forward.

“We have evidence.”

Victor’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Sarah connected a device.

A recording played.

Michael’s voice.

“I need to know if Lily’s records are real.”

Victor’s voice answered.

“They don’t matter.”

Michael:

“What?”

Victor:

“DNA doesn't control ownership. Money does.”

The courtroom froze.

Then another voice appeared.

A woman.

A voice I recognized.

Evelyn.

“They will never find out.”

My heart sank.

The recording continued.

Victor:

“Once Daniel loses custody, the trust becomes accessible.”

Evelyn:

“And the girl?”

Victor:

“She is just a key.”

The room exploded.

The Real Crime

The judge demanded silence.

Detective Collins explained.

“They planned to remove Daniel Carter as trustee.”

She placed documents forward.

“They created false reports.”

More documents.

“They manipulated witnesses.”

More.

“They attempted to endanger Lily.”

The final piece.

“The identity issue was not created by Mr. Carter.”

She looked toward Victor.

“It was created by the people trying to control her.”

The courtroom turned.

Everyone looked at Victor.

For the first time...

He looked uncertain.

The Person Who Changed Everything

Then the courtroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman entered.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying a small box.

Victor immediately stood.

“No.”

The woman looked at him.

“Yes.”

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized her.

She was Anna’s former assistant.

The woman who disappeared after Anna died.

“Who are you?”

She looked at me.

“My name is Grace Bennett.”

She walked forward.

“And I am the person who helped Anna uncover the truth.”

Anna’s Last Secret

Grace opened the box.

Inside were old documents.

Photographs.

Medical records.

A sealed envelope.

She looked at me.

“Daniel, before Anna died, she asked me to protect Lily.”

My throat tightened.

“Why?”

Grace looked toward Victor.

“Because Anna discovered he was planning to use her daughter.”

The judge leaned forward.

“Explain.”

Grace placed the documents on the table.

“These are the original birth records.”

Everyone waited.

The courtroom became silent.

I looked at Lily.

Then at the papers.

Grace whispered:

“The records were changed.”

My heart stopped.

“But not because Lily was not Daniel’s daughter.”

I froze.

“What?”

Grace looked at me.

“Because someone wanted people to believe she wasn't.”

The room exploded.

Victor’s expression changed.

Grace continued.

“Anna discovered the truth.”

She opened the final document.

“The person who altered the records
”

She looked directly at Victor.

“Was Victor Hale.”

The Fall of Victor Hale

For the first time, Victor looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Afraid.

Because his perfect story was collapsing.

Grace continued:

“He created a false identity trail to make Lily vulnerable.”

“Why?”

The judge asked.

Grace answered:

“Because if people questioned Lily’s identity, they could challenge her inheritance.”

Everything finally made sense.

The lies.

The custody battle.

The attack.

The public accusations.

It was all about making Lily’s future uncertain.

And then controlling it.

The Final Shock

As police approached Victor, his lawyer whispered something.

Victor suddenly smiled.

A cold, terrifying smile.

“You still don't understand.”

Everyone stopped.

Victor looked at me.

“Anna never trusted you completely.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

He laughed quietly.

“She hid something else.”

Detective Collins stepped forward.

“What?”

Victor looked toward Lily.

Then back at me.

“Ask Daniel why Anna kept the final DNA test hidden.”

Silence.

I felt the world tilt.

Because suddenly...

I remembered.

A sealed envelope Anna once mentioned.

A test she said she needed to finish.

A test she never showed me.

Victor smiled.

“You think you know the truth.”

The police grabbed him.

“But you don't.”

As Victor was taken away, I looked at Lily.

And for the first time...

May you like

I wondered what Anna had discovered before she died.
