Chapter 7 – The Brother I Trusted

Chapter 7 – The Brother I Trusted

The emergency hearing was scheduled for nine o’clock in the morning.

Less than twelve hours.

That was all the time I had.

Twelve hours to prove I was not the monster everyone believed I was.

Twelve hours to protect Lily.

Twelve hours to fight against a man I had never even met.

Victor Hale.

The man who could influence courts.

The man who could bury investigations.

The man who had somehow known exactly where to attack.

But before I could fight Victor...

I needed to understand Michael.

Because every path still led back to my brother.

The person who opened the door.

The person who let the enemy inside.

The person who knew me better than anyone.

The Brother Who Saved Me

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I sat in the dark living room, looking at old photographs.

There were hundreds.

Family vacations.

Birthday parties.

Christmas mornings.

Pictures of Michael holding Lily when she was a baby.

Pictures of Anna laughing beside him.

He looked happy.

He looked genuine.

That was the hardest part.

Betrayal only hurts when the person mattered.

A stranger could hurt you.

But you never mourn a stranger.

You mourn the person you thought they were.

I remembered the day Anna died.

The hospital hallway.

The smell of medicine.

The sound of machines.

I had fallen apart.

I couldn't speak.

I couldn't even look at Lily.

And Michael was there.

He held my shoulder.

“Daniel, I promise you.”

His voice had been full of emotion.

“I will protect your family.”

I believed him.

I believed every word.

Because I needed someone to believe.

The First Lie

The next morning, Detective Collins arrived with new evidence.

“We found another account.”

I looked up.

“Michael?”

She nodded.

“An offshore account.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

That word made me angry.

“Enough for what?”

Sarah opened the file.

“Enough to prove this wasn't about helping Lily.”

Inside were payments.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

From companies connected to Victor Hale.

To Michael.

The dates shocked me.

The first payment was made three months after Anna died.

The second was made six months later.

The final payment...

One week before the charity luncheon.

The day before Evelyn prepared the poisoned dessert.

My hands tightened.

“He was paid to do this.”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

Finding Michael

We tracked Michael to a small apartment outside the city.

Not the guest room in my house.

Not his usual places.

A secret apartment.

Another lie.

The police entered first.

I followed.

Inside, everything was organized.

Too organized.

No personal photos.

No memories.

No signs of a real life.

It looked like a temporary location.

A place someone stayed while pretending to be someone else.

Sarah opened a drawer.

Inside were files.

My name.

Lily’s name.

Anna’s name.

Everything.

Michael had been studying us.

Planning us.

The police officer found a notebook.

“Detective.”

Sarah took it.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”

She handed it to me.

The first page contained one sentence.

Daniel Carter: Emotional weakness after wife’s death.

The second:

Primary strategy: Become indispensable.

My stomach turned.

The third:

Gain trust before gaining control.

I stopped reading.

Because I understood.

Michael didn't become my brother’s support after Anna died.

He became my enemy.

The Conversation

The police found Michael two hours later.

He didn't run.

That surprised me.

He was sitting at a café.

Drinking coffee.

Like a man waiting.

When he saw me, he smiled sadly.

“Daniel.”

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted answers.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I sat across from him.

“Why?”

One word.

That was all I could say.

Michael looked down.

For the first time, he didn't have a perfect response.

“I was tired.”

I stared at him.

“Tired?”

“Of always being second.”

The answer shocked me.

He continued.

“You had everything.”

I almost laughed.

“Everything?”

“A wife who loved you.”

“A daughter who adored you.”

“A company.”

“A future.”

His voice became bitter.

“And me?”

He looked at me.

“I was always the brother in the background.”

I shook my head.

“That’s why you tried to destroy Lily’s life?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“That’s why I accepted the opportunity.”

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

Victor Hale’s Offer

Michael leaned closer.

“Do you know what Victor told me?”

I didn't answer.

“He said people like us never get noticed.”

His eyes hardened.

“He said the rich don't care about family. They care about bloodlines and money.”

I stared at him.

“So you sold us.”

Michael looked away.

“I thought I could control it.”

There it was.

The excuse.

The same excuse every traitor used.

I didn't mean for it to happen.

I didn't think it would go this far.

But it always did.

“How many times did you lie to me?”

Michael didn't answer.

“Tell me.”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Almost every day.”

The words crushed me.

The Question About Anna

I leaned forward.

“Did you kill Anna?”

Michael froze.

The question changed everything.

His expression shifted.

Fear.

Real fear.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

“Then tell me what happened.”

He looked around.

Then whispered:

“Anna found out about Victor.”

My heart stopped.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

“Because she found something worse.”

“What?”

Michael looked at me.

“Victor wasn't just stealing from the company.”

A pause.

“He was building a case against you.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you were the only person standing between him and Anna's assets.”

I thought about the hidden trust.

The shares.

The foundation.

Everything.

Michael continued:

“Anna knew she couldn't beat him alone.”

“Then why did you help him?”

His face collapsed.

“Because he threatened me.”

I stared.

“He threatened you?”

Michael nodded.

“He showed me proof.”

“Of what?”

His voice became quiet.

“Of what I had done years ago.”

The Secret Michael Hid

I waited.

Michael looked broken.

“Before Anna died…”

He swallowed.

“I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“I helped Victor access company information.”

The world went silent.

“You betrayed Anna before.”

“Yes.”

“Then why should I believe you now?”

Michael looked at me.

“You shouldn't.”

That answer surprised me.

“I know I don't deserve your trust.”

He lowered his head.

“But Victor is going to destroy you.”

“Unless?”

“Unless you expose him first.”

The Impossible Choice

Michael gave me a small flash drive.

“What is this?”

“Everything I collected.”

I didn't take it.

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I expect you to hate me.”

A painful silence.

“But use it anyway.”

I picked up the drive.

Before leaving, I asked one final question.

“Did Anna know you betrayed her?”

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

My heart broke.

“What did she say?”

His voice cracked.

“She told me…”

A tear appeared.

“She told me she hoped I would remember who I was before greed changed me.”

The New Threat

When I returned home, Detective Collins examined the drive.

Her expression became serious.

“There’s a lot here.”

“How much?”

“Enough to destroy Victor Hale.”

For the first time in days, I felt hope.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“The court hearing was moved.”

“To when?”

She swallowed.

“Right now.”

My blood ran cold.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

She looked toward the window.

“Someone wants this decided before we can prepare.”

I looked at Lily.

The fight was no longer about money.

It was about survival.

And somewhere in the city...

Victor Hale was watching.

Waiting.

Because he knew something I didn’t.

May you like

The final battle had already begun.
