Chapter 3 – Anna’s Last Warning

Chapter 3 – Anna’s Last Warning

The courtroom was silent.

Not the kind of silence that came from respect.

The kind that came when everyone realized they had been watching the wrong story.

For weeks, Michael had carefully built an image.

The loving brother.

The concerned uncle.

The stable adult who only wanted to protect a child.

But Rachel Morgan had just walked into the courtroom and shattered everything.

Because she knew Anna.

And more importantly...

She knew what Anna had discovered before she died.

The Woman Who Worked for Anna

Rachel stood before the judge with a small folder pressed against her chest.

She looked nervous.

But she didn't look afraid.

That was something I noticed immediately.

Everyone who challenged Michael looked afraid.

Evelyn.

The witnesses.

Even me.

But Rachel looked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

The judge adjusted his glasses.

“Ms. Morgan, explain your statement.”

Rachel took a deep breath.

“I worked as Mrs. Anna Carter’s financial assistant for six years.”

Michael immediately stood.

“Your Honor, this woman was terminated before my sister-in-law’s death. Her testimony is clearly motivated by resentment.”

Rachel looked at him.

A small smile appeared.

“That’s exactly what you wanted everyone to believe.”

The judge looked at Michael.

“Sit down, Mr. Carter.”

Michael slowly sat.

But I saw it.

The first crack.

He was no longer completely in control.

Anna’s Secret Investigation

Rachel opened the folder.

“After Mrs. Carter created Lily’s trust, she became concerned about unauthorized interest in the account.”

The judge frowned.

“Unauthorized interest from whom?”

Rachel looked at Michael.

“From family members.”

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

Michael shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.”

Rachel continued.

“Mrs. Carter noticed that someone had repeatedly accessed information about Lily’s inheritance.”

Detective Collins looked surprised.

“You mean before Anna died?”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Anna knew?”

Rachel looked at me.

“She suspected.”

Those words hurt.

Because Anna had been carrying fear alone.

While I was trusting everyone around me.

The File Anna Left Behind

Rachel handed the judge a document.

“This is a copy of Mrs. Carter’s private notes.”

The judge examined it.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?”

Rachel answered:

“A record of conversations.”

“With whom?”

“Michael Carter.”

The courtroom became silent.

The judge read silently for several moments.

Then:

“Mr. Carter, did you discuss Lily’s inheritance with your sister-in-law?”

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“I asked normal family questions.”

Rachel interrupted.

“No.”

She opened another page.

“You asked how quickly the trust could be changed.”

Michael’s lawyer immediately objected.

“Speculation.”

“Overruled.”

The judge looked at Rachel.

“Continue.”

Rachel nodded.

“Anna became suspicious because Michael was not asking about Lily.”

She paused.

“He was asking about access.”

The Conversation I Never Heard

Rachel played a recording.

A voice filled the courtroom.

Anna.

My Anna.

The sound of her voice almost destroyed me.

I had not heard it in months.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I forgot where I was.

Then I heard Michael’s voice.

“Anna, you’re making this more complicated than it needs to be.”

Anna answered:

“What does that mean?”

Michael:

“It means Lily needs someone practical managing her future.”

Anna:

“She has parents.”

Michael:

“You won’t always be here.”

The courtroom went silent.

My hands tightened.

Because I remembered.

Anna died three weeks later.

The recording continued.

Anna’s voice became colder.

“Are you threatening me?”

Michael laughed softly.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m reminding you that life changes.”

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

The Man Behind the Mask

I looked at Michael.

The man sitting across the courtroom no longer looked like my brother.

He looked like a stranger wearing my brother’s face.

The judge turned toward him.

“Mr. Carter, do you have an explanation?”

Michael stood slowly.

“Yes.”

Everyone waited.

“I was worried.”

The answer was simple.

Almost believable.

“I loved Anna.”

He looked emotional.

“I loved Lily.”

Then he looked at me.

“And I watched my brother fall apart after Anna died.”

My stomach turned.

Because I knew what he was doing.

He was changing the story.

Again.

“I tried to help him.”

Michael lowered his head.

“But Daniel became obsessed with protecting Lily from everyone.”

A few people in the courtroom looked at me.

Doubt.

That was what Michael wanted.

Not proof.

Doubt.

Daniel’s Breaking Point

For two years, I had questioned myself.

After Anna died.

After the depression.

After the sleepless nights.

After forgetting school meetings.

After crying in front of Lily.

Maybe Michael was right.

Maybe I wasn't enough.

Maybe Lily deserved someone stronger.

But now I understood.

Michael didn't help me because he cared.

He helped me because he needed me weak.

And that realization hurt more than any accusation.

The Judge’s Decision

The judge reviewed the documents.

Then looked at both sides.

“Based on the evidence presented today, I cannot grant emergency guardianship.”

Michael’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

The judge continued.

“However, this court will investigate all claims regarding the child’s safety and financial trust.”

The hearing was not over.

But Michael had lost his first battle.

Outside the courtroom, reporters surrounded us.

Questions exploded.

“Mr. Carter, did your brother try to take your daughter?”

“Was the allergy incident planned?”

“Is Michael Carter dangerous?”

I ignored them.

I only looked at Lily.

She was holding my hand.

And for the first time since the nightmare began...

I felt like we had a chance.

The Message From Michael

That evening, after returning home, my phone received a message.

From Michael.

Only one sentence.

You think Anna protected you. She didn’t.

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

She protected Lily from the truth.

My heart stopped.

Before I could respond, another message arrived.

A photograph.

It showed Anna.

Standing outside a lawyer’s office.

The date was two days before her death.

The caption:

Ask yourself why your wife was preparing documents against you.

I felt cold.

Because for the first time...

I wondered.

Was Michael lying?

Or was there another secret Anna had hidden from me?

The Last Warning

That night, I returned to Anna’s old office.

I hadn't entered since she died.

Everything remained untouched.

Her books.

Her desk.

Her photographs.

I searched through drawers.

Nothing.

Until I opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Daniel.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My wife’s handwriting.

Daniel,

If you found this, it means my fears were correct.

There is something I never told you.

I wanted to protect you.

I wanted to protect Lily.

But I was afraid telling you the truth would put you in more danger.

I sat down.

The letter continued.

Michael is not working alone.

I stopped breathing.

Another name was written below.

A name I never expected.

Because it belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had been helping me.

Someone who had been standing beside Detective Collins from the beginning.

The letter ended with one sentence:

Do not trust the person who finds this letter.

At that exact moment...

The office door slowly opened.

I turned.

A shadow stood outside.

A familiar voice said:

“Daniel.”

My blood went cold.

Because I recognized the voice.

And I realized...

May you like

The person Anna warned me about had already found me.
