Chapter 2 – The Guardian’s Game

Chapter 2 – The Guardian’s Game

The name on the screen haunted me.

Daniel Carter.

My login.

My identity.

My access.

Someone had used my own information to enter Lily’s medical records.

Someone had wanted to know what doctors discovered.

Someone had wanted to remove evidence.

And whoever did it knew exactly what they were looking for.

Detective Sarah Collins stared at the screen.

“Your account was accessed remotely.”

I looked at her.

“Can you find out who?”

“We’re working on it.”

“Working on it isn’t enough.”

My voice came out sharper than I intended.

Because my daughter was lying in that bed.

Because someone had tried to hurt her.

Because the people I trusted were turning against me.

Sarah didn’t react.

She understood.

“I know you want answers, Daniel.”

She closed the file.

“But right now, we need to protect Lily.”

I looked at my daughter.

She was asleep.

Exhausted.

After everything she had been through, she still looked like the same little girl who used to run through the house wearing Anna’s old shoes.

A child who believed everyone around her was safe.

I hated that the world had taught her otherwise.

The Man Who Wanted Custody

The next morning, the hospital hallway was filled with reporters.

Somehow, the story had leaked.

A wealthy family.

A poisoning attempt.

A custody battle.

A child caught in the middle.

Everyone wanted a piece of it.

Detective Collins stood beside the window watching the crowd.

“Michael knows how to control a story.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

She handed me a tablet.

A news article was already spreading.

LOCAL FATHER QUESTIONED AFTER ALLERGIC REACTION INVOLVING DAUGHTER

My stomach turned.

The article didn't mention Evelyn’s arrest.

It didn't mention the missing injector.

It didn't mention Lily’s recording.

Instead, it focused on me.

My wife’s death.

My emotional state.

My struggles as a single father.

“He’s already building the case,” Sarah said.

I looked at her.

“Against me.”

She nodded.

“Exactly.”

The Perfect Uncle

The article included statements from anonymous sources.

Friends.

Neighbors.

Family acquaintances.

All saying the same thing.

Daniel has been struggling.

Daniel has changed.

Daniel might not be stable.

The words felt familiar.

Because they were the same things Evelyn had been saying for two years.

I looked at Detective Collins.

“They planned this.”

“Yes.”

“They were going to use Lily’s accident as proof.”

“Yes.”

I clenched my fists.

“But Lily almost died.”

Sarah looked at me.

“And that’s why they made sure it happened.”

The sentence hit me harder than anything.

This wasn’t a mistake.

This wasn’t carelessness.

It was a trap.

A trap where my daughter was the bait.

Evelyn’s Second Confession

Later that afternoon, Detective Collins arranged a meeting.

With Evelyn.

I didn't want to see her.

Not after what she did.

Not after watching Lily afraid because of her.

But Sarah insisted.

“She knows something.”

The interview room was cold.

Evelyn sat behind the glass.

No expensive suit.

No perfect hair.

No powerful friends.

For the first time, she looked old.

Tired.

Broken.

When she saw me, she smiled sadly.

“You hate me.”

I didn't answer.

“You should.”

Her honesty surprised me.

“You tried to hurt my daughter.”

Evelyn looked down.

“I know.”

“Why?”

Her eyes moved toward me.

“I thought I was protecting my family.”

I almost laughed.

“By almost killing Lily?”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“Michael told me she would never be harmed.”

Silence.

I leaned forward.

“Michael?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“He said the dessert would only create a medical scare.”

My blood ran cold.

“What did he tell you?”

“He said the ambulance would come.”

“He said you would look irresponsible.”

“He said the court would believe you were incapable.”

Detective Collins watched carefully.

“And the injector?”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then:

“Michael took care of that.”

The room froze.

The Truth About Michael

Evelyn continued.

“He knew where you kept everything.”

“He knew Lily’s schedule.”

“He knew the trust.”

She looked at me.

“He knew you.”

That hurt more than anything.

Because she was right.

Michael didn't need to investigate me.

He lived with me.

He ate dinner with us.

He watched Lily grow up.

He knew exactly how to destroy my life.

“He told me you would never suspect him.”

Evelyn gave a bitter smile.

“And he was right.”

The First Crack in Michael’s Plan

Detective Collins returned to the hospital with new information.

“We found something.”

She placed a folder down.

Inside were copies of emails.

Michael had been communicating with a private attorney.

The subject line:

Temporary Guardian Strategy.

I read the first message.

Daniel is emotionally unstable. Need documentation.

The second:

Child incident will strengthen the argument.

The third:

After emergency custody is granted, trust access begins.

My hands trembled.

He wasn’t reacting.

He was waiting.

Planning.

Lily’s Decision

That evening, Lily woke up.

“Dad?”

I sat beside her.

“I’m here.”

She looked scared.

“Is Uncle Michael bad?”

I froze.

Children shouldn't have to ask questions like that.

“I don’t know yet.”

She looked at me.

“But you don’t trust him anymore.”

I didn't answer.

Because she was right.

Lily touched the bracelet around her wrist.

“Mom said something.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“She said people can pretend to be nice.”

My heart stopped.

“When did she say that?”

“Before she died.”

Lily looked away.

“She told me to remember how people act when nobody is watching.”

I felt tears forming.

Anna.

Even after she was gone...

She was still protecting us.

The Guardian Hearing

The next morning, Michael appeared in court.

Not as a suspect.

Not as a criminal.

As a concerned family member.

That was his genius.

He stood before the judge wearing a simple suit.

Looking humble.

Looking heartbroken.

“I love my niece.”

He spoke softly.

“I only want what is best for Lily.”

The judge looked at him sympathetically.

Then Michael turned.

And looked directly at me.

A warning.

A reminder.

He believed he had already won.

His lawyer presented documents.

Reports.

Statements.

Even photographs showing me looking exhausted after Anna’s death.

The story was simple.

Daniel is broken.

Michael is stable.

Lily needs protection.

Then Michael spoke.

“Your Honor, I don't want to remove Lily from her father.”

A pause.

“I only want temporary guardianship until Daniel receives help.”

The courtroom murmured.

It sounded reasonable.

That was the most dangerous part.

A lie doesn't have to sound evil.

Sometimes the best lies sound like kindness.

The Unexpected Witness

Just as the judge prepared to make a decision...

The courtroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had worked for Anna.

Someone who disappeared after her death.

The judge frowned.

“Who are you?”

The woman stepped forward.

“My name is Rachel Morgan.”

She looked at Michael.

“And I know what he did.”

Michael’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw fear.

Real fear.

Rachel held a folder.

“I have proof that Michael Carter planned this entire custody case before Anna died.”

The courtroom became silent.

Michael stood.

“That’s impossible.”

Rachel smiled.

“No.”

She looked directly at him.

“What’s impossible is that you thought Anna didn’t leave evidence.”

The judge ordered silence.

Detective Collins immediately moved closer.

And I realized something.

Michael had spent two years believing he was the smartest person in the room.

But he had forgotten one thing.

Anna knew him.

May you like

And Anna had prepared for him.
