CHAPTER 1 — THE NIGHT HE THREW HER OUT

CHAPTER 1 — THE NIGHT HE THREW HER OUT

Rain hammered against the enormous glass walls of the Aurelia Grand Resort.

From the outside, the building looked like a palace floating above the coastline.

Inside, everything glittered.

Crystal chandeliers hung from a ceiling painted by Italian artists. Black marble stretched across the lobby floor. Gold-trimmed elevators carried wealthy guests toward private villas overlooking the sea.

And in the center of it all stood Elena Rossi.

She had designed this lobby.

Every line.

Every curve.

Every piece of stone.

Nine years earlier, she had stood in the unfinished building with a roll of architectural drawings beneath her arm while everyone else saw an abandoned construction site.

Elena had seen a future.

Tonight, she was being thrown out of it.

“Take her outside.”

Julian's voice was calm.

Almost bored.

Elena looked at him.

For a moment, she genuinely thought she had misunderstood.

“What did you say?”

Julian didn't repeat himself.

He simply looked at the two security officers standing behind her.

“Remove her from the property.”

One of the officers hesitated.

“Mr. Rossi…”

Julian's expression hardened.

“You heard me.”

The security guard looked at Elena.

Then at Julian.

The man's face showed confusion.

Everyone knew Elena.

She wasn't some unwanted guest.

She was Mrs. Rossi.

The woman who had spent years walking through this resort without ever needing to announce herself.

The woman whose office was on the top floor.

The woman who had personally approved the marble beneath their feet.

But Julian had spoken.

And Julian was the man whose face appeared on every business magazine in the country.

So the guards stepped forward.

Elena's fingers curled slowly at her sides.

“Julian.”

He finally looked directly at her.

“What?”

“You're asking security to remove your wife from our resort?”

A small smile appeared on his face.

“No.”

He glanced around the lobby.

“I'm asking security to remove a trespasser.”

The words hit harder than Elena expected.

A murmur moved through the lobby.

Several guests turned.

One woman lowered her champagne glass.

A bellman suddenly became fascinated by the floor.

Elena stared at her husband.

“I'm your wife.”

“Not for much longer.”

He reached into his jacket.

Then pulled out a folder.

He dropped it onto a nearby table.

“Our divorce papers.”

Elena didn't move.

“You planned this.”

Julian shrugged.

“I planned for the inevitable.”

“What inevitable?”

His eyes shifted toward the woman standing behind him.

Camila.

Elena had seen her before.

Of course she had.

The young woman had appeared at Julian's side at charity events, business dinners, and private parties.

Always laughing.

Always touching his arm.

Always wearing something Elena had paid for.

Tonight, however, Camila wasn't wearing something Elena had bought for her.

She was wearing Elena's coat.

A handcrafted cashmere coat that Elena's grandmother had commissioned in Milan.

And around Camila's neck hung an emerald pendant.

Elena's grandmother's emerald.

The necklace Elena had believed was missing.

Her breath caught.

“Where did you get that?”

Camila touched the emerald casually.

“This?”

She smiled.

“Julian gave it to me.”

Elena looked at her husband.

“Where did you get it?”

Julian didn't answer.

“Julian.”

He sighed.

“You're making a scene.”

“That necklace belonged to my grandmother.”

“I know.”

The lobby became silent.

Elena stared at him.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you gave it to her?”

Camila smiled.

“He thought it looked better on me.”

Elena felt something inside her break.

Not because of the necklace.

Not even because of Camila.

It was because Julian had known exactly what that emerald meant.

Her grandmother had worn it on her wedding day.

She had given it to Elena when Elena turned twenty-five.

And she had made Elena promise:

Never give it to someone who only loves what your name can provide.

Elena had laughed at the time.

She had believed Julian was different.

She had been wrong.

THE MAN SHE BUILT

Nine years earlier, Julian Rossi had been thirty-one years old.

Ambitious.

Brilliant.

Charming.

And broke.

His first hotel project had collapsed before construction began.

Banks refused to finance him.

Investors laughed at his proposal.

Then he met Elena.

At the time, Elena wasn't famous.

She preferred it that way.

Her family owned land, hotels, shipping companies, and investment trusts across three continents.

But the Rossi family never put their name on everything they owned.

Her father had taught her something important:

Power doesn't need to announce itself.

Elena saw potential in Julian.

She believed in his vision.

She convinced her father to give Julian access to one abandoned coastal property.

Just one.

Julian transformed it.

And Elena transformed Julian's dream into reality.

She designed the resort.

She negotiated with architects.

She created the guest experience.

She selected the materials.

She built the financial model.

She introduced him to international investors.

She even taught him how to speak to billionaires without sounding like someone desperate to become one.

The first resort became a sensation.

Then came the second.

Then the third.

Then ten.

Then twenty.

Julian became a celebrity businessman.

The magazines called him:

The Self-Made King of Luxury Hospitality.

Elena never corrected them.

She stayed behind the scenes.

She thought it was romantic.

She thought Julian knew the truth.

She thought he loved her.

That was her greatest mistake.

“YOU DON'T OWN ME”

Elena picked up the divorce papers.

Her hands were steady.

That surprised her.

“You've already decided everything.”

Julian nodded.

“Yes.”

“You're keeping the company?”

“Obviously.”

She looked at him.

“Obviously?”

“This is my business.”

Elena almost laughed.

“My business?”

Julian stepped closer.

“Don't start.”

“You built this?”

“Yes.”

“You built Aurelia?”

“Yes.”

“You designed the first resort?”

“Yes.”

“You negotiated the land acquisitions?”

“Yes.”

“You secured the original financing?”

“Yes.”

Elena's voice became quieter.

“And who introduced you to every person who made that possible?”

Julian's jaw tightened.

“You're my wife. You supported me.”

“I did more than support you.”

He looked around.

“What's your point?”

“My point is that you couldn't have built any of this without me.”

Julian smiled.

“Maybe that was true nine years ago.”

He leaned closer.

“But it isn't anymore.”

Elena stared at him.

“You've forgotten something.”

“What?”

“You don't own me.”

Julian's expression hardened.

“I don't want you.”

The sentence echoed through the lobby.

Elena nodded slowly.

“Good.”

Julian seemed surprised.

She placed the divorce papers back on the table.

“Then we have nothing left to discuss.”

She turned.

The security officers stepped forward.

Elena looked at them.

Neither man wanted to touch her.

One finally whispered:

“Mrs. Rossi…”

Elena looked at him.

“It's all right.”

She walked toward the entrance.

But before she reached the doors, Julian called after her.

“Elena.”

She stopped.

He walked toward her.

“You're leaving with nothing.”

She turned around.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

He pointed toward the exit.

“No company shares.”

“No property.”

“No access to corporate accounts.”

“No staff.”

“You're walking out exactly as you came in.”

Elena stared at him.

Then asked quietly:

“Exactly as I came in?”

“Yes.”

A strange smile touched her lips.

“No, Julian.”

She looked around the lobby.

“I came in with everything.”

His smile disappeared.

“And you're the one walking away with nothing.”

Julian laughed.

“Delusional.”

Elena didn't answer.

She walked out.

THE RAIN

The moment the doors closed behind her, rain soaked her hair.

She stood beneath the enormous awning.

For nine years, the resort had been home.

Tonight, security wouldn't even let her return for an umbrella.

Elena looked back through the glass.

Julian stood inside.

Camila beside him.

Her grandmother's emerald shining beneath the chandeliers.

Julian placed his hand on Camila's waist.

Camila laughed.

Elena turned away.

She refused to cry.

Not here.

Not for him.

She walked down the steps.

Her heels slipped slightly on the wet stone.

She removed them.

Then continued barefoot through the rain.

A black car waited at the curb.

The driver opened the door.

Elena didn't get in.

Instead, she pulled out her phone.

Her hands were trembling now.

Not from fear.

From anger.

She scrolled through her contacts.

One name.

Dad.

She pressed call.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then her father's voice answered.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Elena swallowed.

“He did it.”

Silence.

Her father's voice changed.

“What did he do?”

“He threw me out.”

Another silence.

Then:

“Did he use the words?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“What words?”

She looked back at the glowing resort.

“He said it was his resort.”

Her father exhaled slowly.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked:

“Did he remove your access?”

“Yes.”

“Corporate accounts?”

“Yes.”

“Executive privileges?”

“Yes.”

“Security?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Elena frowned.

“Good?”

Her father's voice remained calm.

“Very good.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I was wondering how long it would take.”

Elena's heart began beating faster.

“Dad…”

“Did he give Camila your grandmother's emerald?”

Elena froze.

“Yes.”

Her father's voice became ice cold.

“Then he has crossed every line.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Nothing.”

Elena stared into the rain.

“Nothing?”

“Not tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because tonight, he still thinks he won.”

Elena's father paused.

“Let him enjoy the next few hours.”

“Dad…”

“Go home.”

“I don't know if I have a home anymore.”

Her father's answer came immediately.

“You do.”

“What?”

“Your family.”

THE FIRST CALL

Elena ended the call.

Then her father's assistant called.

She answered.

“Ms. Rossi?”

“Yes?”

“Your father has instructed me to tell you that the family protection protocol has been activated.”

Elena's breath stopped.

“What protocol?”

“You know exactly which one.”

She hadn't heard those words in years.

The protocol had been created by her grandfather.

It had only one purpose.

Protect the family's assets if an outside spouse attempted to seize control.

Elena whispered:

“Is he really doing this?”

“Yes.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Even the international holdings?”

“Yes.”

Elena looked toward the resort.

“Dad…”

The assistant interrupted gently.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The board members have been notified.”

“Which board?”

“All of them.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“All?”

“All twenty-three.”

Her heart began racing.

“And the trust?”

“Unlocked.”

“The land?”

“Transferred back to the family holding company.”

“The brand?”

“Protected.”

“The intellectual property?”

“Protected.”

“The bank accounts?”

“Frozen pending review.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Julian had no idea.

Not yet.

She whispered:

“What about his shares?”

The assistant paused.

“That is the interesting part.”

“What?”

“He doesn't have any.”

Elena opened her eyes.

“What?”

“Mr. Rossi has spent nine years believing he owns controlling shares.”

Her father's assistant spoke slowly.

“He never did.”

THE MAN WHO THOUGHT HE WON

Inside the resort, Julian raised a champagne glass.

“To new beginnings.”

Camila smiled.

“To us.”

Around them, senior executives clapped.

Some looked uncomfortable.

Others were terrified.

Julian didn't notice.

He had never felt more powerful.

His wife was gone.

His mistress was beside him.

His resort was still standing.

His empire appeared untouched.

He kissed Camila.

“Tomorrow,” he whispered, “you'll officially move into the penthouse.”

Camila smiled.

“Tomorrow?”

“Tonight, I have a few things to finalize.”

“What things?”

“Corporate matters.”

She looked toward the elevator.

“Can I use Elena's office?”

Julian smiled.

“It's yours now.”

Camila's eyes lit up.

She kissed him.

Neither noticed the general manager standing several meters away.

He was looking at his phone.

His face had gone white.

Julian noticed.

“What?”

The manager approached slowly.

“Sir…”

“What is it?”

“I've received an email.”

“From whom?”

The manager hesitated.

“The Rossi Family Holding Office.”

Julian laughed.

“Tell them to contact my lawyers.”

“I don't think you understand.”

“Understand what?”

The manager turned his phone around.

Julian read the message.

His smile vanished.

ALL PROPERTY ACCESS FOR JULIAN ROSSI HAS BEEN SUSPENDED EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

Julian stared.

“What is this?”

The manager swallowed.

“There is more.”

Julian grabbed the phone.

Another message appeared.

EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING — 6:00 A.M.

Then another.

ATTENDANCE REQUIRED: JULIAN ROSSI.

Julian laughed nervously.

“This is Elena.”

The manager didn't answer.

“Isn't it?”

Still nothing.

Julian looked around.

“Where is my legal team?”

“They're not answering.”

“What?”

“I've tried six times.”

Julian pulled out his phone.

He called his chief lawyer.

Straight to voicemail.

His CFO.

No answer.

His personal banker.

Call rejected.

Julian stared at his screen.

Something cold moved through his stomach.

He looked at Camila.

“What did Elena do?”

Camila's smile disappeared.

MIDNIGHT

At exactly midnight, Elena arrived at her family's private residence.

Her father was waiting in the study.

Three lawyers stood behind him.

Two accountants.

The family's chief financial officer.

And the head of international assets.

Elena stopped in the doorway.

“What is all this?”

Her father looked at her.

“Your husband's empire.”

Elena walked inside.

“He thinks he owns it.”

Her father smiled.

“He thinks many things.”

A lawyer opened a folder.

“Mrs. Rossi, we have begun the first phase.”

Elena looked at the documents.

“What happens at six?”

Her father answered:

“Julian learns who owns the world he has been calling his.”

Elena sat down.

For the first time that night, she allowed herself to breathe.

Her father placed the emerald's original appraisal on the desk.

“Your grandmother's necklace was never lost.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“It was removed from the family vault.”

“By Julian?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Her father looked toward the door.

“That's what we're going to find out.”

Elena frowned.

“Why would anyone help him?”

Her father didn't answer.

Instead, he pushed another file toward her.

The cover contained only one word:

CAMPAIGN.

Elena opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Julian.

Camila.

Corporate executives.

Bank transfers.

Private meetings.

And one photograph that made Elena's blood run cold.

Her father was standing beside Julian.

But the photograph had been taken seven years earlier.

Before Elena knew anything was wrong.

Elena looked at her father.

“Why were you meeting him?”

Her father's expression darkened.

“I wasn't meeting him.”

“Then who was?”

He turned the photograph over.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

THE MAN WHO OWNS THE RESORTS IS NOT JULIAN.

Elena stared at it.

“Dad…”

He nodded.

“Your husband didn't just betray you.”

He looked toward the clock.

12:07 a.m.

“He has been trying to steal your family's empire for years.”

Elena's heart pounded.

“How long have you known?”

Her father didn't answer.

Instead, he said:

“Tomorrow morning, Julian will discover that his greatest mistake wasn't cheating on you.”

He looked directly at his daughter.

“It was believing you were powerless without him.”

Outside, thunder shook the windows.

Across the city, Julian stood alone inside the darkening lobby of the Aurelia Grand.

His keycard had stopped working.

His employees were avoiding him.

His lawyers were unreachable.

And the woman he had thrown into the rain was nowhere to be found.

He looked toward the elevators.

For the first time in nine years, he felt something he had almost forgotten.

Fear.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Julian answered.

“Who is this?”

A man's voice replied.

“You should have asked who owns your resort.”

Julian froze.

“Who are you?”

The caller laughed softly.

“You'll know at sunrise.”

The line went dead.

Julian stared at the phone.

Then slowly looked up at the enormous chandelier Elena had designed herself.

For nine years, he had believed the lights were shining because of him.

He was about to discover something much worse.

May you like

They had never belonged to him.

And by sunrise, every light in his empire would be controlled by the woman he had just thrown into the rain.
