CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED ELENA

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED ELENA
At 3:41 in the morning, Elena Rossi learned that the dead could still destroy the living.
The name on the contract had been impossible.
Victoria Rossi.
Her grandmother's younger sister.
The woman the family had mourned for twenty years.
The woman whose portrait had once hung in the east wing of the Rossi estate.
The woman Elena barely remembered.
And yet her name was there.
Written in her grandmother's handwriting.
Designated as the Protector of the Rossi Legacy Trust.
Elena stared at the document.
“No.”
Her father said nothing.
Julian stood across the room, soaked from the rain, his expression unreadable.
Richard Hale had gone completely still.
Elena looked from one man to the other.
“You all knew about her.”
Richard finally spoke.
“I knew she existed.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I knew your grandmother never trusted her.”
Elena's voice sharpened.
“Then why did she make Victoria the Protector?”
“We don't know.”
Julian stepped forward.
“I know.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Elena stared.
“Then tell me.”
Julian swallowed.
“Because Victoria wasn't supposed to protect the empire.”
“What was she supposed to do?”
“Destroy it.”
Silence.
THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED
By dawn, Elena was back inside the Rossi headquarters.
The rain had stopped, but the city remained dark beneath a thick layer of clouds.
The boardroom looked different now.
Every face seemed suspicious.
Every whisper sounded dangerous.
The contract sat in the center of the table.
No one touched it.
Elena stood beside the window.
“Tell me everything about Victoria.”
The family archivist opened an old database.
“There are very few records.”
“Why?”
“Because someone erased most of them.”
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
Elena turned.
“Find out.”
The archivist hesitated.
“We may need access to the private archive.”
“Then access it.”
He nodded.
A few minutes later, an old photograph appeared on the screen.
Two young women stood beside each other.
One was Elena's grandmother.
The other was Victoria.
They looked almost identical.
Same dark hair.
Same sharp eyes.
Same proud posture.
But Victoria's expression was different.
Cold.
Almost defiant.
Elena stared at the photograph.
“How old were they?”
“Twenty-four and twenty-six.”
“What happened between them?”
The archivist opened another file.
“Your grandmother inherited the company.”
“And Victoria?”
“She challenged the inheritance.”
“Why?”
The archivist looked uncomfortable.
“She believed your grandmother had stolen it.”
Elena frowned.
“Stolen what?”
“The family legacy.”
A lawyer interrupted.
“That isn't accurate.”
The archivist turned toward him.
“It's what the records say.”
Elena raised her hand.
“Keep going.”
The archivist swallowed.
“Victoria claimed the original family fortune belonged to her branch of the family.”
“Did she have evidence?”
“Yes.”
“What happened to it?”
“It disappeared.”
“Along with Victoria?”
“Yes.”
Elena stared at the photograph.
“So she vanished after accusing my grandmother of stealing the empire.”
“Correct.”
“And twenty years later, she appears as the Protector of that same empire.”
Nobody answered.
Elena whispered:
“This was planned.”
THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR
At 7:30 a.m., Elena went into her grandmother's private study.
She closed the door.
For the first time since everything began, she allowed herself to cry.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a few silent tears.
She looked around the room.
Her grandmother had taught her to read there.
Taught her how to negotiate.
Taught her never to confuse wealth with power.
And most importantly—
Never to trust anyone who demanded loyalty without earning it.
Elena walked toward the old mirror.
Something caught her eye.
A small scratch in the wooden frame.
She touched it.
The frame moved.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a single envelope.
Elena pulled it out.
On the front:
FOR ELENA — IF VICTORIA RETURNS.
Her hands began trembling.
She opened it.
Her grandmother's handwriting appeared.
My darling,
If Victoria has returned, then the final protection has failed.
Do not believe her story.
Do not believe your father's story.
And most importantly, do not believe Julian's.
Each of them knows only part of the truth.
Elena stopped reading.
Her heart pounded.
Then:
Victoria did not disappear because I defeated her.
She disappeared because I made a bargain with her.
Elena's eyes widened.
A bargain?
She continued.
I promised her something in exchange for protecting you.
But I never gave her what she wanted.
That is why she will come for you.
Elena lowered the letter.
“What did you promise her?”
The answer was on the next line.
The Rossi empire.
THE FIRST BETRAYAL
Elena returned to the boardroom.
“Find Victoria.”
The security director looked at her.
“We've already started.”
“Where?”
“We traced an old bank account.”
“Whose?”
“Victoria's.”
Elena's pulse quickened.
“Where is it?”
“Geneva.”
“When was it last used?”
The director hesitated.
“Yesterday.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“Yesterday?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
“We don't know.”
“Find out.”
The financial investigator interrupted.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“The account wasn't used for a withdrawal.”
“Then what?”
“A transfer.”
“How much?”
“Two million dollars.”
Elena stared.
“Where did it go?”
The investigator opened the transaction.
Elena's face went pale.
The money had been transferred to an account belonging to—
Julian Rossi.
She slowly looked across the room.
Julian wasn't there.
He had left an hour earlier.
Elena's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A woman's voice came through.
Old.
Calm.
Elegant.
“Hello, Elena.”
Elena froze.
“Victoria?”
A soft laugh.
“You sound just like your grandmother.”
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere your grandmother spent years trying to find.”
“Tell me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because you haven't asked the right question.”
Elena clenched her jaw.
“Then I'll ask it.”
“Go ahead.”
“Why did you betray my grandmother?”
Silence.
Then Victoria replied:
“She betrayed me first.”
The line went dead.
THE MISTRESS RETURNS
At noon, Elena received another call.
This time from the hotel.
The receptionist sounded terrified.
“Mrs. Rossi?”
“Yes?”
“There's a woman here asking for you.”
“Who?”
“Camila.”
Elena froze.
Julian's mistress.
The woman who had spent the previous night in Elena's penthouse wearing her clothes and her grandmother's emerald necklace.
“What does she want?”
“She says she has information.”
“About Julian?”
“No.”
A pause.
“About Victoria.”
Elena stood immediately.
“Don't let her leave.”
Camila was waiting in a private lounge.
She no longer looked smug.
Her makeup was smeared.
Her hands trembled.
When Elena entered, Camila stood.
“I need your help.”
Elena stared at her.
“You came to me?”
“Yes.”
“After spending the night in my penthouse?”
Camila lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
“After wearing my grandmother's necklace?”
“I didn't know what it was.”
“You knew it wasn't yours.”
Camila said nothing.
Elena walked closer.
“What does Victoria have to do with you?”
Camila's face changed.
“How do you know?”
“You just confirmed it.”
Camila swallowed.
“I didn't know her name.”
“Then who did you work for?”
Camila whispered:
“Your father.”
Elena went completely still.
THE WOMAN YOUR FATHER SENT
Camila sat down.
“I was told to get close to Julian.”
Elena stared.
“By my father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To watch him.”
“For how long?”
“Seven years.”
Elena's heart sank.
Seven years.
The same amount of time Julian had been waiting before turning against her.
“What did my father want to know?”
“Whether Julian was still loyal to the people who sent him.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“Who sent him?”
Camila shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I swear.”
“Then why did you become his mistress?”
Camila began crying.
“Because I fell in love with him.”
Elena looked away.
Another person trapped inside Julian's lies.
“Did Julian know you were working for my father?”
“No.”
“Did my father know you were sleeping with Julian?”
“Yes.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“And he allowed it?”
“He told me it was necessary.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Her father had been watching Julian.
Julian had been watching her.
Camila had been watching Julian.
And somewhere above all of them—
Victoria had been watching everyone.
A perfect web.
Elena opened her eyes.
“Why come to me now?”
Camila reached into her handbag.
She removed a small memory card.
“Because Julian discovered me.”
Elena stared.
“What happened?”
“He confronted me last night.”
“Where?”
“The penthouse.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“What did he say?”
Camila whispered:
“He said if I betrayed him, Victoria would kill me.”
THE RECORDING
Elena took the memory card.
“What's on it?”
“Julian's conversation.”
“With whom?”
Camila looked terrified.
“Victoria.”
Elena stared at her.
“You recorded them?”
“No.”
“Then how?”
“I found the recording in Julian's office.”
Elena inserted the card into a laptop.
A video opened.
Julian stood inside a dark room.
Across from him was a woman.
Her face was hidden.
But her voice was unmistakable.
Victoria.
“You failed,” she said.
Julian replied:
“I tried.”
“You were given nine years.”
“I loved her.”
“You were supposed to control her.”
“I couldn't.”
Victoria stepped closer.
“Then you should have killed the marriage sooner.”
Elena's breath caught.
Julian shook his head.
“I won't hurt her.”
Victoria laughed.
“You already did.”
Silence.
Then Julian said something that made Elena's blood freeze.
“I never told Elena about the child.”
Elena stared at the screen.
Child?
What child?
Victoria replied:
“Good.”
“Where is she?”
“Safe.”
“Who has her?”
Victoria turned.
The video ended.
Elena stared at the black screen.
“What child?”
Camila was crying.
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I swear.”
Elena stood.
“Find out.”
THE WOMAN WHO KNEW
At 3:10 p.m., Elena confronted her father.
He was in his office.
Calm.
Almost too calm.
“You knew about Victoria.”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
“You knew she was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Julian was working for her.”
He hesitated.
“I knew he had been.”
“And Camila?”
His expression changed.
“What about her?”
“She worked for you.”
He sighed.
“Yes.”
Elena's voice shook.
“How many people have you put around me?”
He stood.
“Enough.”
“That's not an answer.”
“No.”
“Then answer me.”
He walked toward the window.
“Your grandmother believed the only way to protect the family was to control everyone around you.”
Elena stared.
“And you continued it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I believed she was right.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed my marriage.”
“I protected your life.”
“You manipulated me.”
“I protected you.”
“You lied to me.”
“I kept you alive.”
She stopped.
“What?”
Her father turned.
“You think Julian was the greatest threat?”
Elena said nothing.
“He wasn't.”
“Then who?”
Her father whispered:
“Victoria.”
THE SECRET OF THE MISTRESS
That evening, Elena returned to the hotel.
Camila was waiting.
But she wasn't alone.
Julian stood beside the window.
Elena stopped.
He turned.
“I need to tell you something.”
“You're the last person I want to hear from.”
“I know.”
“Then leave.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Victoria has already made her move.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“What move?”
Julian looked at Camila.
“She knows about the child.”
Elena froze.
“Whose child?”
Julian stared at her.
“Mine.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“She was born before I met you.”
Elena stared at him.
“Who is she?”
Julian closed his eyes.
“Her name is Sofia.”
Silence.
Elena felt the room spin.
“Where is she?”
“Victoria has her.”
Elena's voice became a whisper.
“Why?”
“Because Sofia is the real heir.”
Elena stared at Julian.
“The real heir to what?”
Julian answered:
“The second trust.”
THE FINAL BETRAYAL
That night, Elena returned to the old Rossi estate.
She opened the final box.
Inside was one photograph.
A little girl.
Seven years old.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
Standing beside an older woman.
Victoria.
On the back was a handwritten sentence:
SOFIA VILLENEUVE — THE HEIR THEY ALL FORGOT.
Elena's hands shook.
She turned the photograph over.
Another note had been written underneath.
If Elena discovers Sofia, Victoria will no longer need Julian.
Elena stared at the photograph.
Then her phone rang.
Victoria.
Elena answered.
“What do you want?”
Victoria's voice was calm.
“Everything.”
“You already have Sofia.”
“Yes.”
“You want the trust.”
“Yes.”
“You want the empire.”
“Yes.”
“Then why involve Julian?”
A pause.
“Because I needed someone Elena would love.”
Elena's blood froze.
Victoria continued:
“And Julian was perfect.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“So the marriage…”
“Was a trap.”
“And the mistress?”
“A distraction.”
“And my father?”
“A protector who became a prisoner.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“And Sofia?”
Victoria laughed softly.
“The reason this entire war began.”
Elena gripped the phone.
“Where is she?”
“Come to the Grand Alcazar tomorrow night.”
“Why?”
“Because I want you to meet your husband's daughter.”
The call ended.
Elena stared at the photograph.
A little girl she had never met.
A child who might possess the key to billions.
A child Victoria had hidden for years.
And suddenly Elena understood the cruelest part of the entire conspiracy.
Julian hadn't destroyed their marriage because he wanted the empire.
He had destroyed it because someone had convinced him that if Elena discovered Sofia…
the entire Rossi inheritance would change hands.
But there was one thing Victoria hadn't counted on.
Elena no longer wanted the empire.
She wanted the truth.
And if the truth required destroying every contract, every company, every fortune her family had built—
May you like
she was finally willing to burn it all.
Even if she had to take Julian down with it.
