CHAPTER 5 — THE EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING

CHAPTER 5 — THE EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING
At 6:12 the next morning, Elena Rossi walked into the headquarters of Rossi Family Estates carrying a single black folder.
She had not slept.
No one had.
The disappearance of Mateo had turned the family crisis into something far more dangerous.
Three security guards had been injured at the clinic.
The cameras had been disabled for exactly four minutes.
Mateo had vanished through a window on the fourth floor.
And the only thing left behind was a counterfeit emerald bearing the initials M.V.R.
Elena had spent the entire night asking herself the same question.
Why would someone go to such lengths to prevent her from meeting her own uncle?
The answer had to be connected to the second trust.
And Julian.
Especially Julian.
At 6:13, the elevator doors opened.
The boardroom was already full.
Every director had been summoned.
Every family attorney was present.
The chief financial officer sat at the far end of the table with a stack of documents beside him.
Her father stood near the window.
And on the massive screen behind them was a single word:
EMERGENCY.
Elena entered.
No one spoke.
She placed the black folder on the table.
Then looked around.
“Lock the doors.”
The security director immediately obeyed.
The heavy doors closed.
Elena took her seat.
“Now,” she said, “tell me everything.”
THE BOARD THAT NEVER KNEW
The chairman cleared his throat.
“Before we begin, there is something you need to understand.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
“Half of this board didn't know the full ownership structure.”
Elena frowned.
“What do you mean?”
He glanced at the lawyers.
“Your grandmother deliberately divided the information.”
“Why?”
“To prevent a hostile takeover.”
Elena leaned forward.
“By whom?”
The chairman hesitated.
“Anyone.”
Her father interrupted.
“Not anyone.”
Everyone looked at him.
He continued quietly.
“Someone inside the family.”
The room fell silent.
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“You said there was an internal threat.”
Her father nodded.
“Years ago.”
“Who?”
“We never proved it.”
Elena stared at him.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it's true.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Every time I ask a question, you tell me there is something you don't know.”
She leaned closer.
“But somehow everyone keeps having secrets.”
Her father lowered his eyes.
Elena turned to the chairman.
“Show me the ownership records.”
A lawyer opened a secure digital file.
The screen filled with corporate structures.
Rossi Family Estates.
Rossi International Holdings.
Aurelia Development.
Rossi Hospitality.
Various international subsidiaries.
Elena recognized most of them.
Then the lawyer opened another document.
At the top was a heading she had never seen.
ROSSI LEGACY TRUST — CLASS II
Elena stared.
“What is that?”
The lawyer answered:
“The second trust.”
Her heart began pounding.
“And who controls it?”
“No one.”
“What?”
“It has no active beneficiary.”
Elena frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“Under normal circumstances, no.”
“Then explain it.”
The lawyer took a breath.
“The trust was established with a succession condition.”
“What condition?”
“The return of the missing heir.”
Elena looked at her father.
“You knew.”
“I knew there was a condition.”
“You didn't know what it was?”
“No.”
The lawyer continued.
“According to the original agreement, if Mateo Rossi returns and is legally confirmed as the missing heir, control of Class II transfers automatically.”
“To him?”
“No.”
Elena's expression changed.
“To whom?”
The lawyer looked at her.
“To both of you.”
The room went silent.
Elena stared.
“Both?”
“You and Mateo become joint beneficiaries.”
Her father closed his eyes.
Elena whispered:
“That's why Julian was looking for him.”
No one answered.
She didn't need them to.
THE NUMBER THAT TERRIFIED THE BOARD
The CFO slowly opened another file.
“There is another problem.”
Elena looked at him.
“What now?”
“Class II doesn't just contain property.”
“What does it contain?”
He pushed a document toward her.
Elena read the first line.
Then the second.
Then stopped.
Her face went pale.
“How much?”
The CFO answered quietly.
“Approximately fourteen billion dollars in assets.”
No one moved.
Elena stared at him.
“Fourteen billion?”
“Conservative estimate.”
She looked around the table.
“And Julian knew?”
“We believe he knew about the existence of the trust.”
“Did he know the amount?”
“We don't know.”
Her father stepped forward.
“He knew enough.”
Elena looked at him.
“How?”
“Because your grandfather once told him.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“My grandfather met Julian?”
“No.”
“Then how?”
Her father hesitated.
“Julian met someone who knew.”
“Who?”
Silence.
Elena's voice became sharper.
“Who?”
The CFO finally spoke.
“Your grandfather's former attorney.”
Elena frowned.
“Name?”
“Richard Hale.”
Her father immediately turned toward him.
“That's impossible.”
“Why?”
“Richard Hale died twelve years ago.”
The CFO shook his head.
“No.”
He opened another file.
“He died officially twelve years ago.”
Elena stared.
“Officially?”
The CFO nodded.
“There are recent financial transactions under his identity.”
A chill ran through the room.
“Someone is using a dead man's identity.”
“Correct.”
Elena looked at the screen.
The transactions were enormous.
Millions transferred through offshore accounts.
Some went to shell companies.
Others went to private security firms.
And one account appeared repeatedly.
J.R. CONSULTING.
Elena's eyes hardened.
“Julian.”
THE PHONE CALL
At 7:01 a.m., Julian's phone rang.
He was standing in a hotel room.
Not one of his hotels.
A cheap business hotel across town.
He had spent the night there because every luxury property connected to Rossi Family Estates had denied him access.
He looked at the caller ID.
RICHARD.
Julian answered.
“You shouldn't call this number.”
The voice on the other end was distorted.
“You have a problem.”
“What?”
“She's calling the board.”
“I know.”
“She found the trust.”
Julian's jaw tightened.
“How?”
“Mateo.”
Julian looked toward the window.
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“We lost him.”
Julian's expression changed.
“You lost him?”
“He was taken.”
“By whom?”
“We don't know.”
Julian slammed his hand against the table.
“You were supposed to watch him!”
“We did.”
“Then how did he disappear?”
Silence.
Julian took a breath.
“Listen carefully.”
“What?”
“Find Mateo.”
“And if we can't?”
Julian looked at the photograph on the desk.
Elena.
Smiling.
Happy.
Before everything fell apart.
“Then find Elena.”
“What do you want us to do?”
Julian's voice became cold.
“Give her something to fear.”
The call ended.
Julian stared at the phone.
He knew the board meeting was happening.
He knew Elena was discovering the truth.
But he still had one advantage.
She didn't know what the second trust contained.
And she didn't know that someone had already prepared a plan for the moment Mateo returned.
THE WOMAN WHO READ THE CONTRACT
At 7:22 a.m., Elena was still in the boardroom.
She had read the second trust agreement four times.
Something bothered her.
“Stop.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
“This clause.”
She pointed to a paragraph.
“Why does it say bloodline confirmation rather than birth confirmation?”
The attorney looked at the document.
“It's legal language.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“My grandmother chose every word in these agreements.”
She looked at her father.
“Didn't she?”
“Yes.”
“Then why would she use that phrase?”
The attorney hesitated.
“It could mean genetic confirmation.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“Or?”
“Or verified lineage through a legal bloodline.”
Elena leaned back.
“What if Mateo isn't the only person who can activate the trust?”
The room became silent.
The attorney looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
Elena pointed at the contract.
“What if the trust was designed to activate when either heir is confirmed?”
Her father suddenly stepped forward.
“That's impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because Mateo was the missing heir.”
“But I was never missing.”
Her father stared at her.
Elena continued.
“What if the trust was never waiting for Mateo?”
She looked at the lawyers.
“What if it was waiting for me to discover him?”
Nobody spoke.
The chairman slowly sat back.
“That would mean…”
Elena finished the sentence.
“The trust was designed to expose the conspiracy.”
Her father stared at the contract.
And for the first time, he looked genuinely frightened.
THE FILE FROM THE ARCHIVE
At 8:04, the family's chief archivist entered the boardroom carrying a dusty metal box.
“I found this.”
Elena looked up.
“Where?”
“Your grandmother's private archive.”
“Why wasn't it in the main collection?”
“It was sealed.”
“By whom?”
The archivist hesitated.
“Your grandmother.”
Elena stood.
“What does it contain?”
“We don't know.”
She opened the box.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
Bank statements.
And a small cassette recorder.
Elena picked it up.
“Does this work?”
The archivist nodded.
“We transferred the audio last night.”
She looked at him.
“You listened?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the label said it was for you.”
Elena turned the recorder over.
A handwritten label was attached.
ELENA — WHEN THE BOARD TURNS AGAINST YOU.
Her heart stopped.
She looked at her father.
“What does that mean?”
He shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Elena pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then her grandmother's voice.
Old.
Weak.
But unmistakable.
“Elena, if you are hearing this, then someone has finally tried to take control of the Rossi empire.”
Elena's eyes widened.
The room became absolutely silent.
Her grandmother continued.
“Do not trust the person who claims he built it.”
Elena's breath caught.
Julian.
“He will tell you that your family stole his future.”
A pause.
“He will tell you that he deserves what belongs to you.”
Elena closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“He may even convince you that he loves you.”
Tears appeared in Elena's eyes.
Her grandmother's voice became quieter.
“But the greatest danger is not the man you marry.”
The recording crackled.
Everyone leaned closer.
“It is the person who helps him from inside.”
The tape stopped.
Silence.
Elena opened her eyes.
“Inside.”
She looked around the boardroom.
Twenty-three directors.
Executives.
Attorneys.
Family representatives.
Someone in that room could be helping Julian.
THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE BOARD
The security director suddenly moved toward the door.
Elena noticed.
“Wait.”
He stopped.
“Where are you going?”
“I need to check something.”
“What?”
“Security footage.”
“Sit down.”
He hesitated.
“Mrs. Rossi…”
“Sit.”
He returned to his chair.
Elena looked around the room.
“From this moment forward, nobody leaves.”
The directors exchanged nervous glances.
One man objected.
“This is absurd.”
Elena looked at him.
“Is it?”
He frowned.
“We are all trusted members of the board.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you treating us like suspects?”
“Because someone helped Julian.”
She placed the photograph of Mateo on the table.
“And someone tried to stop me from finding him.”
The room became tense.
Elena continued.
“I don't know who.”
“But I will.”
THE ACCOUNT THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST
At 8:41, the financial investigator returned.
“Mrs. Rossi.”
Elena turned.
“What?”
“We found another account.”
“Whose?”
“Yours.”
Elena frowned.
“My account?”
“Yes.”
“What kind?”
“Private family account.”
“I have dozens.”
“Not this one.”
He placed a document in front of her.
“This account was created eighteen years ago.”
Elena stared.
“I was twenty.”
“Yes.”
“Who opened it?”
“Your grandfather.”
“What was inside?”
“Nothing.”
She looked confused.
“Then why does it matter?”
The investigator swallowed.
“Because something was deposited yesterday.”
“How much?”
He hesitated.
“Ten million dollars.”
The room went silent.
Elena stared at the page.
“From whom?”
“We don't know.”
“Find out.”
“We're trying.”
“Immediately.”
The investigator nodded.
“There is one more detail.”
“What?”
“The transfer came from an account belonging to…”
He stopped.
Elena's expression hardened.
“Say it.”
He looked at the report.
“Julian Rossi.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“Why would Julian transfer ten million dollars into my private account?”
No one answered.
Then her father's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What's wrong?” Elena asked.
He didn't answer.
“Dad?”
He slowly looked at her.
“It was the clinic.”
Elena stood.
“What happened?”
“They found Mateo.”
Her heart leaped.
“Where?”
Her father shook his head.
“He's alive.”
“Then where is he?”
Her father stared at her.
“In a police station.”
“Why?”
“Because he turned himself in.”
MATEO'S CONFESSION
At 9:27 a.m., Elena entered the police station.
Mateo sat behind a glass partition.
His face was bruised.
His clothes were dirty.
But his eyes were clear.
When he saw Elena, he stood.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“For disappearing.”
Elena sat across from him.
“Who took you?”
Mateo looked down.
“No one.”
“What?”
“I left.”
“Why?”
“Because they were coming for you.”
“Who?”
Mateo's eyes filled with fear.
“Your husband.”
Elena's jaw tightened.
“What does Julian want?”
Mateo leaned closer to the glass.
“He wants the second trust.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You don't.”
Elena stared at him.
“Then tell me.”
Mateo whispered:
“The trust doesn't contain fourteen billion dollars.”
Elena frowned.
“Then what?”
Mateo looked around the room.
Then lowered his voice.
“It contains the controlling shares of every Rossi company.”
Elena froze.
“That isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“Then why didn't my grandmother simply give them to me?”
“Because she knew someone would try to take them.”
“Who?”
Mateo looked directly at her.
“Julian wasn't the first.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“What?”
“Your grandfather's business partner tried before him.”
“Who?”
Mateo's face became pale.
“Richard Hale.”
Elena stared.
“The dead lawyer?”
Mateo nodded.
“He didn't die.”
The world seemed to tilt.
“Where is he?”
Mateo looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“He's the man who helped Julian.”
THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD
At 10:05 a.m., Elena returned to the boardroom.
She didn't sit.
She walked straight to the screen.
“Cancel every external transaction.”
The CFO stared.
“Every transaction?”
“Every one.”
“What about international operations?”
“Freeze them.”
“That's going to cause chaos.”
“I know.”
“Mrs. Rossi, we could lose millions.”
Elena looked at him.
“We've already lost millions.”
She turned to the chairman.
“Remove every executive appointed by Julian.”
The chairman hesitated.
“All of them?”
“All.”
The board erupted.
“You can't do that.”
“This is unprecedented.”
“You'll destabilize the company.”
Elena raised her hand.
The room went silent.
“This company survived wars.”
She looked around.
“It survived recessions.”
“It survived political crises.”
“It survived three generations of people trying to steal it.”
Her voice hardened.
“It will survive Julian Rossi.”
She turned toward the legal team.
“Begin the removal process.”
The attorneys nodded.
Then Elena's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A man's voice came through.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar somehow.
“Hello, Elena.”
She froze.
“Who is this?”
The man laughed softly.
“You don't remember me.”
“Who are you?”
“I knew your grandfather.”
Elena's pulse raced.
“Richard Hale?”
Silence.
Then:
“So Mateo told you.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“Closer than you think.”
Elena looked around the boardroom.
Her eyes stopped on one person.
The security director.
He was watching her.
Too closely.
Richard continued:
“Ask yourself one question.”
“What?”
“Why did Julian marry you?”
Elena's breathing stopped.
Richard's voice became colder.
“Then ask yourself why he waited seven years before trying to take the empire.”
The line went dead.
Elena slowly lowered the phone.
Her father approached.
“What did he say?”
Elena looked at him.
“He asked why Julian married me.”
Her father went silent.
“And?”
“He told me to ask why Julian waited seven years.”
Her father's face changed.
Elena noticed.
“Dad?”
He looked away.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
Her father finally met her eyes.
“Julian didn't meet you by accident.”
Elena felt the room disappear around her.
“What are you saying?”
Her father whispered:
“Your grandmother suspected he was sent to you.”
“By whom?”
He looked toward the closed boardroom doors.
“We never found out.”
Elena stared.
Nine years.
Nine years of marriage.
Nine years of love.
Nine years of believing Julian had entered her life by chance.
Now one terrible possibility stood before her.
What if he had never fallen in love with her?
What if he had chosen her?
What if their entire marriage had been planned?
THE FINAL DOCUMENT
At 11:18 a.m., the family attorneys discovered one final document.
It had been hidden beneath the second trust agreement.
A marriage clause.
Elena read it once.
Then again.
Her hands began shaking.
If Elena Rossi marries without disclosure of the family trust, all undisclosed parties to the marriage agreement shall be subject to review.
She looked at the attorney.
“What does this mean?”
“It means your grandmother anticipated exactly what happened.”
“Julian knew about the trust.”
“Yes.”
“Before he married me?”
“We believe so.”
Elena closed her eyes.
The room seemed suddenly cold.
Every memory changed.
Their first meeting.
Their first kiss.
His proposal.
Their wedding.
Their honeymoon.
His promises.
His tears.
His declaration that he loved her.
All of it suddenly carried another possibility.
A possibility she desperately didn't want to believe.
Her father put a hand on her shoulder.
“Elena.”
She pulled away.
“No.”
He stopped.
“I need to know.”
“Know what?”
“Who introduced Julian to me.”
Her father didn't answer.
Elena stared at him.
“Who?”
Finally, he whispered:
“Richard Hale.”
Elena's heart broke.
Not because of Julian.
Because the truth was worse than she had imagined.
Julian hadn't simply betrayed her.
He might have entered her life as part of a plan designed by someone who had been waiting for years to destroy the Rossi family from within.
Elena looked at the board.
Then at the second trust.
Then at Mateo's photograph.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Find Richard Hale.”
The chairman nodded.
“And Julian?”
Elena looked toward the windows.
The sun was disappearing behind dark clouds.
“Don't arrest him yet.”
Everyone stared.
“Why?”
Elena picked up the counterfeit emerald.
“Because I want him to believe he still has a chance.”
Her father's eyes narrowed.
“What are you planning?”
Elena closed the black folder.
“For nine years, Julian played a game without telling me the rules.”
She looked toward the door.
“Now I'm going to let him think he is still winning.”
A faint smile appeared on her face.
“And then I'm going to change the rules.”
THAT NIGHT
At 11:49 p.m., Julian received a message.
THE BOARD HAS FROZEN THE COMPANY.
He smiled bitterly.
Then another message arrived.
ELENA HAS NOT FILED CRIMINAL CHARGES.
His smile disappeared.
Why?
Then a third message.
SHE IS ASKING FOR A PRIVATE MEETING.
Julian stared at the screen.
A minute later, Elena's message arrived.
Tomorrow. 9:00 p.m. Aurelia Grand. Come alone.
Julian read it twice.
Then smiled.
For the first time in days, he believed he had an advantage.
He didn't know that Elena was standing in the same hotel across the city, looking at a separate message from an unknown number.
DON'T MEET JULIAN.
Elena typed:
Who are you?
The response came immediately.
Someone who knows what happened to Mateo.
Elena's heart stopped.
Another message followed.
And someone who knows why Julian married you.
Then one final message:
If you want the truth, come to the old Rossi estate at midnight. Alone.
Elena stared at the screen.
Outside, thunder rolled over the city.
She knew it could be a trap.
She also knew she couldn't ignore it.
Because for the first time, the question was no longer whether Julian had betrayed her.
The question was much darker.
May you like
Who had sent him into her life?
And why had they waited nine years to make their final move?
