CHAPTER 8 — THE MONEY THAT VANISHED

CHAPTER 8 — THE MONEY THAT VANISHED

At 6:12 the next morning, Elena discovered that losing an empire was easier than discovering where its money had gone.

The Rossi headquarters was already awake.

Assistants rushed through the corridors.

Lawyers spoke in hushed voices.

Security personnel stood outside the executive floor.

Screens displayed financial charts that seemed to change every few seconds.

But there was one number no one could explain.

$487,600,000.

Nearly half a billion dollars had vanished from the Rossi network.

Not stolen from one account.

Not transferred from one company.

It had disappeared from twenty-three different accounts across seven countries.

Elena stood in front of the financial screen.

“Run it again.”

The chief accountant swallowed.

“We have.”

“Then run it again.”

“We did.”

“Again.”

The accountant exchanged a nervous glance with the others.

“Mrs. Rossi…”

Elena turned.

“Don't call me that.”

The room went silent.

She had spent nine years being called Julian's wife.

Now the title felt like another piece of evidence against her.

“Show me exactly when the money disappeared.”

The accountant brought up the timeline.

The first transfer had occurred at 11:47 p.m.

The second at 11:49.

Then another.

And another.

Within seventeen minutes, nearly half a billion dollars had moved.

Elena stared at the screen.

“Who authorized them?”

The accountant hesitated.

“The system says you did.”

Elena's face went cold.

“I was at the hotel.”

“We know.”

“Then why does the system say I authorized it?”

“We don't know.”

A lawyer stepped forward.

“There is something worse.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“The transfers were executed using your grandmother's legacy authorization.”

Elena frowned.

“My grandmother has been dead for twelve years.”

“I know.”

“Then how did her authorization activate?”

The lawyer looked at the screen.

“That's what we're trying to determine.”

Elena stared at the numbers.

Then she remembered Victoria's voice.

I want everything.

Maybe the money wasn't disappearing.

Maybe someone was moving the pieces into place.

THE ACCOUNT THAT DIDN'T EXIST

At 7:03 a.m., the financial investigators found the first clue.

One account had received $86 million.

It belonged to a company called Rossi Maritime Holdings.

Elena frowned.

“We don't own a maritime company.”

The accountant shook his head.

“According to the registry, we do.”

“Since when?”

“Twenty-one years.”

Elena stared at him.

“That company doesn't exist.”

“It does.”

“Where?”

“Panama.”

“Who owns it?”

The accountant opened the ownership file.

His face changed.

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

“The beneficial owner is listed as…”

He stopped.

Elena's patience snapped.

“Say it.”

He whispered:

“Victoria Rossi.”

Silence filled the room.

Elena stepped closer.

“How much money has gone through that company?”

The accountant looked at the screen.

“Approximately $1.9 billion.”

Elena felt the air leave her lungs.

“Over how many years?”

“Twenty.”

She slowly sat down.

Twenty years.

Before Julian.

Before her marriage.

Before the resorts.

Before she even understood how much money her family possessed.

Victoria had been moving money for decades.

“Where did it come from?”

The accountant looked frightened.

“Rossi Family Trusts.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“How much?”

“Almost all of it.”

THE EMPIRE WAS BUILT ON MISSING MONEY

The boardroom filled within minutes.

Elena's father arrived.

Julian arrived.

Richard arrived.

Even Camila was brought into the room.

No one spoke at first.

Elena projected the financial records onto the wall.

“Someone has been siphoning money from my family for twenty years.”

Her father stared at the figures.

“I know.”

Elena turned.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“That's different from knowing.”

“I couldn't prove it.”

“You never tried hard enough.”

Her father's jaw tightened.

“You don't understand what Victoria is capable of.”

“No.”

Elena pointed at the screen.

“I understand exactly what she's capable of.”

Julian stepped closer.

“She's not just stealing money.”

Elena looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“She is consolidating assets.”

“Why?”

“To create another empire.”

Richard answered before Julian could.

“Not another empire.”

He pointed to the company name.

“A replacement.”

Elena frowned.

“For what?”

Richard looked at her.

“For yours.”

THE WOMAN WHO BUILT A SECOND ROSSI EMPIRE

Richard explained that Victoria had been quietly buying properties for decades.

Hotels.

Airports.

Private islands.

Commercial buildings.

Luxury resorts.

Even entire pieces of infrastructure.

She had never put her name on them.

Instead, she used dozens of shell companies.

Some belonged to dead people.

Some belonged to corporations that no longer existed.

Some were controlled by trusts.

But they all led back to the same place.

Victoria.

Elena stared at the map.

The properties were scattered across the world.

Mexico.

Spain.

France.

Italy.

Singapore.

Dubai.

The United States.

Canada.

Hundreds of locations.

“Why would she do this?”

Richard answered:

“To become independent of the Rossi empire.”

Elena frowned.

“But if she already controlled this much…”

“She didn't.”

“Why not?”

“Because she never had the one thing she needed.”

“What?”

“Legitimacy.”

Elena stared at him.

Richard continued.

“Money can buy property.”

“It can buy companies.”

“It can buy politicians.”

“But it cannot manufacture blood.”

Elena's expression changed.

“Sofia.”

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.”

THE HEIR

Julian looked away.

Elena noticed.

“You knew.”

He said nothing.

“You knew Sofia existed.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Seven years.”

Elena's eyes hardened.

“You knew about her before we married.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was told she was dead.”

“By whom?”

“Victoria.”

Elena stared.

“Then when did you learn she was alive?”

“Two years ago.”

“Two years?”

“Yes.”

“And you still stayed with me.”

Julian's voice broke.

“I didn't know what to do.”

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Three times.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“I don't remember.”

“Because every time I tried, someone interrupted.”

“Who?”

Julian looked at her father.

Elena followed his gaze.

Her father said nothing.

Her heart sank.

“You stopped him.”

Her father finally spoke.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You've said that too many times.”

“You don't understand.”

“No.”

Elena's voice became cold.

“I understand perfectly.”

THE PASSWORD

The chief technology officer suddenly interrupted.

“Mrs. Rossi.”

Elena turned.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“The missing money wasn't transferred through the normal banking system.”

“Then how?”

“Through an old authorization protocol.”

“Whose?”

“Your grandmother's.”

Elena's heart tightened.

“Can it be stopped?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because the protocol isn't controlled by the company.”

“Then who controls it?”

The CTO hesitated.

“The family trustee.”

Elena stared.

“Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“So she can move money whenever she wants.”

“Not exactly.”

“What do you mean?”

“She can only move money under specific conditions.”

“What conditions?”

The CTO displayed the legal code.

Elena read it.

Then stopped.

The conditions were terrifyingly simple.

If the Rossi heir is deemed incapable of managing the estate…

Elena's eyes widened.

“…the Protector may assume temporary financial authority.”

She looked at her father.

“Who declared me incapable?”

No one answered.

“Who?”

The attorney slowly opened another document.

A psychiatric evaluation.

Elena's name was on it.

The diagnosis described her as emotionally unstable.

Financially irresponsible.

Unable to manage the family estate.

Elena stared.

“This is fake.”

“Yes.”

“Who signed it?”

The attorney looked down.

“A doctor.”

“Which doctor?”

He hesitated.

“Your family physician.”

Elena's face went pale.

“The man who treated me when I was a child?”

“Yes.”

“He signed this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Elena looked at Julian.

He looked horrified.

“I didn't know.”

She believed him.

For the first time.

And somehow that made everything worse.

THE ACCOUNTANT'S CONFESSION

At 9:15 a.m., the chief accountant asked Elena for a private meeting.

He closed the door.

“I need to tell you something.”

Elena sat across from him.

“What?”

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“I've been keeping this for eleven years.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Victoria?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Of your father.”

Elena's stomach tightened.

“What is it?”

“A copy of an original transfer.”

She opened it.

The transaction was dated eleven years earlier.

The amount:

$75,000,000.

Recipient:

Rossi Maritime Holdings.

Sender:

Rossi Family Trust.

But there was another line.

Authorization: Elena Rossi.

Elena stared.

“I didn't authorize this.”

“I know.”

“Then who did?”

The accountant whispered:

“Your father.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Why?”

“He told me it was necessary.”

“For what?”

“I never knew.”

“Did Victoria receive the money?”

“Yes.”

“How much did she eventually control?”

The accountant's voice shook.

“Enough to build her own empire.”

Elena stared at him.

Then asked:

“Why did you keep this?”

The accountant pushed another envelope across the desk.

“Because your grandmother told me to.”

Elena opened it.

A note.

When Elena finally discovers the missing money, give her the ledger.

But never give her the ledger before she understands whom she cannot trust.

Elena looked up.

“Where is the ledger?”

The accountant pointed toward the basement.

THE LEDGER

The Rossi basement had been sealed for years.

Elena descended the stairs with Julian and Richard.

Her father stayed behind.

She noticed.

“You're not coming?”

Her father shook his head.

“You shouldn't see what is down there.”

“Then I definitely should.”

The security door opened.

Inside was a room filled with filing cabinets.

Richard walked to the far wall.

He pressed his hand against a panel.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a black ledger.

Elena picked it up.

It was heavier than expected.

She opened the first page.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Bank accounts.

Politicians.

Businessmen.

Judges.

Executives.

Then she saw Julian's name.

She stopped.

JULIAN — $12,000,000.

Her eyes widened.

“When?”

Richard checked the date.

“Five years ago.”

Elena looked at Julian.

“You received twelve million dollars.”

Julian shook his head.

“I didn't.”

“It's in the ledger.”

“I never saw it.”

Richard turned the page.

The money had been deposited into an account in Julian's name.

But the account holder wasn't Julian.

It was someone else.

Elena read the name.

Victoria Rossi.

Julian stared.

“She used my identity.”

“To move money,” Richard said.

“Why?”

Elena answered.

“To make it look like Julian stole from the family.”

Julian's face went white.

“She was building evidence.”

“For what?”

Richard's expression darkened.

“For the day she needed to destroy him.”

THE SECOND DISAPPEARANCE

At 11:47 a.m., the security system went offline.

Every screen in the building went black.

The lights flickered.

Then the emergency alarms sounded.

Elena immediately knew.

“She is here.”

Julian grabbed her hand.

“Stay behind me.”

She pulled away.

“I can protect myself.”

A security officer ran into the room.

“Mrs. Rossi!”

“What?”

“The archives are being opened.”

“By whom?”

“We don't know.”

Richard's face changed.

“The basement.”

They ran.

The door was open.

The ledger was gone.

Elena stared at the empty compartment.

“No.”

On the floor was a single white card.

She picked it up.

One sentence.

YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND THE MONEY.

Below it:

COME TO THE GRAND ALCAZAR.

And beneath that:

BRING JULIAN.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE $487 MILLION

That afternoon, the financial team discovered the final piece.

The $487 million had not disappeared.

It had been transferred into a single holding structure.

A trust.

Its name was:

ELENA ROSSI FAMILY FOUNDATION.

Elena stared.

“But I don't own that.”

The lawyer shook his head.

“You do.”

“What?”

“It was created in your name at birth.”

Elena looked at her father.

He lowered his eyes.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You've been hiding this from me.”

“Yes.”

“How much is inside?”

The lawyer answered:

“Approximately $6.4 billion.”

Silence.

Elena stared.

Six point four billion dollars.

Money she had never known existed.

Money her father had protected.

Money Victoria had been trying to reach.

Money Julian had been used to obtain.

And suddenly Elena understood.

The resorts weren't the real empire.

The hotels weren't the real empire.

The companies weren't even the real empire.

They were merely the visible layer.

The true Rossi fortune was hidden inside the trust.

And whoever controlled Elena…

controlled the money.

THE CALL FROM VICTORIA

At 8:00 p.m., Elena received another call.

She answered.

Victoria spoke immediately.

“You finally understand.”

“Understand what?”

“The resorts are worthless.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

“They are distractions.”

“Then what do you want?”

“The trust.”

“You'll never get it.”

Victoria laughed.

“I already have half.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

“Your father gave me access years ago.”

Elena's stomach turned.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“He wouldn't.”

“He did.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed he could control me.”

“And could he?”

“No.”

Victoria's voice became colder.

“He made the same mistake Julian made.”

“What mistake?”

“Believing he could use me.”

Elena clenched her fists.

“What happened to the money?”

“It is safe.”

“Where?”

“You'll see tomorrow.”

“Where is Sofia?”

A long silence.

Then Victoria whispered:

“She wants to meet you.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“She knows me?”

“She has known about you for years.”

“Why?”

“Because I told her everything.”

“What did you tell her?”

Victoria laughed softly.

“That you stole her inheritance.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“She's a child.”

“She is an heir.”

“She doesn't understand any of this.”

“She understands enough.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“Let her go.”

“Tomorrow.”

“Where?”

“The Grand Alcazar.”

“Alone?”

“No.”

Victoria paused.

“Bring Julian.”

“Why?”

“Because before this ends, he needs to tell you the truth about the contract.”

Elena frowned.

“What contract?”

Victoria's voice became almost affectionate.

“The one he signed before he married you.”

The line went dead.

THE CONTRACT JULIAN FORGOT

Elena turned toward Julian.

He was standing behind her.

His face had gone pale.

“You know what she means.”

Julian didn't answer.

“Julian.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“What did you sign?”

“I didn't know what it meant.”

“You signed it.”

“Yes.”

“What was it?”

Julian looked at her.

“A transfer agreement.”

Elena stared.

“To what?”

“To the Rossi Family Trust.”

Her voice became quiet.

“What did you agree to transfer?”

Julian swallowed.

“Everything.”

Elena's face drained of color.

“But you never owned anything.”

“I know.”

“Then why would you sign it?”

“Because Victoria told me you would sign after me.”

Elena stared at him.

“And if I had?”

Julian's voice broke.

“The entire Rossi fortune would have passed into a new trust.”

“Controlled by whom?”

Julian whispered:

“Victoria.”

Silence.

Elena finally understood why Victoria had wanted Julian inside the family.

Why the marriage mattered.

Why the money had vanished.

Why Sofia mattered.

Why her grandmother had created so many layers of protection.

It had never been about Julian alone.

He had been the key.

Elena was the lock.

And Victoria had spent twenty years searching for the right combination.

Elena looked toward the dark city beyond the windows.

“Tomorrow,” she whispered.

Julian stepped closer.

“What?”

“We go to the Grand Alcazar.”

Richard immediately objected.

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.”

“It could be a trap.”

“It is a trap.”

“Then why go?”

Elena picked up the photograph of Sofia.

Because the little girl's face was all she could see.

“Because she's holding my family's future.”

She looked at Julian.

“And because I am done letting other people decide what happens to mine.”

Outside, somewhere beyond the city lights, an unknown woman watched the Rossi headquarters from inside a black car.

Victoria held an old photograph in her hands.

A photograph of Elena as a little girl.

Beside Elena stood her grandmother.

And behind them, barely visible in the shadows, stood a young woman.

Sofia's mother.

Victoria smiled.

“Tomorrow,” she whispered.

Then she looked at the photograph again.

And for the first time, Elena's grandmother's greatest secret was finally revealed.

May you like

Victoria had never been the enemy who wanted to steal the Rossi empire.

She was the woman who believed it had been stolen from her first.
