CHAPTER 4 — THE MISTRESS IN THE PENTHOUSE

CHAPTER 4 — THE MISTRESS IN THE PENTHOUSE
At 7:03 the next morning, Camila woke up believing she was finally living the life she had always wanted.
The penthouse overlooked the ocean.
Sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling windows.
A private pool reflected the pale morning sky.
There were fresh flowers on every table.
Champagne sat chilling beside the bed.
And on the marble counter lay a small black box.
Camila smiled.
For a moment, she forgot everything that had happened.
She opened the box.
Inside was a diamond bracelet.
A note rested beneath it.
For the woman who deserves everything.
Camila's smile slowly disappeared.
Because the note was written in Julian's handwriting.
And she suddenly remembered that the woman who had supposedly deserved nothing had once been standing in this very penthouse.
Elena.
Her hand moved instinctively toward the emerald necklace around her neck.
But the necklace was gone.
Elena had taken it back.
Camila stared at the empty space where it had been.
Then her phone rang.
Julian.
She answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“I'm downstairs.”
Camila frowned.
“Come up.”
“I can't.”
“What do you mean?”
“I don't have access.”
She laughed nervously.
“Julian, stop joking.”
“I'm not.”
Silence.
Then she heard something in his voice.
Fear.
“What happened?”
“They've changed the security system.”
“Who?”
“Rossi Family Estates.”
Camila sat up.
“Julian…”
“Listen carefully.”
His voice dropped.
“Do not leave the penthouse.”
“Why?”
“Because if Elena knows you're there, she'll come for you.”
Camila looked toward the bedroom door.
“What do you mean?”
Julian hesitated.
“I don't know what she's capable of now.”
The call ended.
Camila stared at the phone.
Then the penthouse lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The air-conditioning stopped.
The elevator display went black.
Camila's face went pale.
A second later, the television switched on by itself.
A message appeared across the screen.
PROPERTY ACCESS REVOKED.
Camila stepped backward.
“No…”
Then another line appeared.
PLEASE WAIT FOR AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE.
She grabbed her phone.
“Julian!”
No answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
For the first time since she had entered the penthouse, Camila understood the truth.
She wasn't the owner.
She wasn't even the resident.
She was simply the woman Julian had temporarily placed inside a home that had never belonged to him.
And someone had finally remembered to change the locks.
THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR
Camila walked toward the bathroom.
She looked at herself in the mirror.
Expensive silk robe.
Diamond earrings.
Perfect hair.
Perfect makeup.
Everything she had dreamed about.
Everything Elena had once possessed.
Camila whispered:
“What have I done?”
A knock came from the front door.
She froze.
Another knock.
Three slow taps.
Camila walked toward the door.
“Who is it?”
A woman's voice answered.
“Rossi Family Estates.”
Camila's heart raced.
She opened the door halfway.
A woman in a dark suit stood outside.
“Ms. Camila Torres?”
“Yes.”
“I've been instructed to inventory the property.”
Camila stared at her.
“You can't come in.”
The woman held up a tablet.
“This property is owned by Rossi Family Holdings.”
“I know.”
“Then you understand why I'm here.”
Camila's voice became defensive.
“Julian gave me permission.”
The woman smiled politely.
“Mr. Rossi no longer has authority to give permission.”
Camila swallowed.
“What happens now?”
“You have thirty minutes to collect your personal belongings.”
Camila stared at her.
“Thirty minutes?”
“Yes.”
“Where am I supposed to go?”
The woman didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Camila closed the door.
Then slid down against it.
For several minutes, she simply sat there.
Crying.
Not because she had lost the penthouse.
Because she had finally realized Julian had lied about everything.
ELENA ARRIVES
At 8:15 a.m., Elena entered the building.
She didn't go upstairs immediately.
She stopped in the lobby.
The concierge approached her.
“Mrs. Rossi.”
“Yes?”
“Ms. Torres is still in the penthouse.”
“I know.”
“Would you like us to remove her?”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
The concierge looked surprised.
“No?”
“I'll speak to her.”
“You're going upstairs?”
“Yes.”
He hesitated.
“Mrs. Rossi…”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
“Please be careful.”
Elena smiled faintly.
“I am.”
She entered the elevator.
The doors closed.
As the elevator climbed, Elena watched the floor numbers change.
Twenty.
Twenty-one.
Twenty-two.
Twenty-three.
Twenty-four.
The penthouse.
Nine years of memories lived on the top floor.
Her first Christmas with Julian.
Their anniversary dinners.
Their first serious argument.
The night Julian proposed.
The night she discovered he had cheated.
The night she forgave him.
And now—
the morning she was going to take it all back.
The elevator opened.
Elena stepped out.
The doors to the penthouse were open.
Camila stood near the window.
She was no longer wearing the silk robe.
She had changed into simple clothes.
Her suitcase stood beside her.
She looked small.
Defeated.
Elena stopped.
Camila turned.
Their eyes met.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Camila said:
“I know.”
Elena frowned.
“Know what?”
“That he never owned this.”
Elena said nothing.
Camila looked around.
“He told me this was his.”
“I know.”
“He told me everything belonged to him.”
“I know.”
“He said you were trying to control him.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“And you believed him.”
“Yes.”
Camila lowered her head.
“I was stupid.”
“You were selfish.”
Camila nodded.
“Yes.”
She didn't defend herself.
That surprised Elena.
Camila continued:
“But I need to tell you something.”
Elena remained silent.
“Something about Julian.”
“What?”
Camila looked toward the hallway.
“He was afraid of you long before last night.”
Elena's expression changed.
“Afraid?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Camila swallowed.
“Because he knew you could destroy him.”
Elena stared at her.
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“You've been with him for how long?”
“Two years.”
“And you never asked?”
“I did.”
“What did he say?”
“He said your family was complicated.”
Elena almost laughed.
“That's all?”
Camila nodded.
“He told me never to ask about the family trust.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“The family trust.”
“Yes.”
“Did he ever mention another heir?”
Camila froze.
Elena immediately noticed.
“You know something.”
“No.”
“Camila.”
“I don't.”
“Look at me.”
Camila raised her eyes.
Elena stepped closer.
“Did Julian ever talk about another member of my family?”
Camila hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Yes.”
Elena's heart began pounding.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“What did he say?”
“He called him…”
Camila stopped.
“Called him what?”
“The Ghost.”
Elena stared.
“Why?”
“Because nobody was supposed to know he existed.”
THE MAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH
Camila opened her suitcase.
She pulled out a small black folder.
“I took this from Julian's office.”
Elena looked at it.
“Why?”
“Because I realized I might need proof.”
She handed it over.
Elena opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Financial documents.
Names.
Addresses.
She turned the first photograph over.
Then stopped.
It was the same man from the photograph Julian had hidden.
Young.
Dark-haired.
Standing beside Elena's grandfather.
Elena's fingers tightened.
“Who is he?”
“I don't know.”
“Where did Julian get this?”
“I don't know.”
“Why did he have it?”
Camila swallowed.
“Because he was looking for him.”
Elena looked up.
“When?”
“For months.”
“How long?”
“Since last year.”
Elena's heart sank.
“Why?”
Camila hesitated.
“He said the man could take everything away from him.”
Elena stared at the photograph.
“What is his name?”
Camila shook her head.
“I never heard it.”
Elena turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
MATEO VILLANUEVA.
Elena's blood ran cold.
She whispered:
“Villanueva.”
Camila looked at her.
“You know him?”
“No.”
Elena stared at the name.
“But I've heard it.”
“Where?”
“My grandmother's letters.”
THE SECRET IN THE LETTER
Elena returned home before noon.
She placed her grandmother's letter on the desk.
Then opened the family archives.
Her father's private archivist brought out three boxes.
“Your grandmother's personal papers.”
Elena opened the first.
Nothing.
Second.
Nothing.
Third.
A small envelope.
She pulled it out.
The name was written across the front.
MATEO.
Elena's breath caught.
She looked at her father.
“You knew.”
He stared at the envelope.
“I knew the name.”
“Who is he?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“You said there was another child.”
“Yes.”
“Was his name Mateo?”
Her father didn't answer.
Elena opened the envelope.
Inside was a birth certificate.
She read it.
Her grandfather's name.
Her grandmother's name.
And beneath them—
CHILD: MATEO ALEJANDRO ROSSI.
Elena stopped breathing.
“Rossi.”
Her father whispered:
“Yes.”
“He was my uncle?”
“Yes.”
“Then why does the photograph say Villanueva?”
Her father looked away.
“I don't know.”
Elena slammed the document onto the desk.
“You know more than you're telling me.”
Her father's expression changed.
“Your grandfather had a son.”
“You said that.”
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
“Why?”
“We never knew.”
Elena stared at him.
“Then why did Julian know?”
Her father went silent.
That silence told her everything.
JULIAN'S LAST MOVE
Across the city, Julian sat in a private office he had rented under another company's name.
His phone rang.
He answered.
“Did you find him?”
A man's voice replied:
“Yes.”
Julian sat upright.
“Where?”
“Mexico City.”
“Is he alone?”
“Yes.”
“Does he know who he is?”
“No.”
Julian smiled.
“Good.”
There was a pause.
“What do you want us to do?”
Julian looked at a photograph of Elena.
“Watch him.”
“And if Elena finds him?”
Julian's expression hardened.
“Make sure she doesn't.”
The caller hesitated.
“Mr. Rossi…”
“What?”
“There is another problem.”
“What?”
“Camila.”
Julian frowned.
“What about her?”
“She gave Elena the documents.”
Julian's face darkened.
“Where is she?”
“She left the penthouse.”
“Find her.”
“Why?”
Julian's voice became cold.
“Because she knows too much.”
THE WOMAN WHO WALKED AWAY
At 3:30 p.m., Camila stood outside the penthouse with two suitcases.
She looked back once.
Then turned away.
Elena was waiting in the lobby.
Camila approached.
“I gave them everything.”
Elena nodded.
“Thank you.”
Camila looked surprised.
“You're not going to punish me?”
Elena thought for a moment.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Julian already did.”
Camila's eyes filled with tears.
“I loved him.”
Elena looked at her.
“So did I.”
Camila lowered her eyes.
“Did he ever love you?”
Elena was silent for several seconds.
Then:
“I don't know.”
Camila nodded.
“I don't think he knows how.”
She walked away.
Elena watched her disappear into the rain.
Then her phone rang.
Her father's number.
She answered.
“Dad?”
His voice was urgent.
“Elena, come home immediately.”
“Why?”
“We found Mateo.”
Her heart stopped.
“Where?”
“I'm sending you the location.”
A message arrived.
Elena opened it.
A private clinic.
She frowned.
“Why is he in a clinic?”
Her father hesitated.
“He was injured.”
“How badly?”
Another silence.
“Dad?”
“He was attacked last night.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“By whom?”
“We don't know.”
Then her father added something that made her stomach turn.
“But the police found something beside him.”
“What?”
“A photograph.”
“Of whom?”
“You.”
Elena froze.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
Her father continued:
“And written on the back were six words.”
Elena's voice became a whisper.
“What words?”
Her father answered:
SHE MUST NEVER MEET HER BROTHER.
The call ended.
Elena stood motionless.
Her entire life had just changed.
Mateo wasn't merely a forgotten heir.
Someone was terrified of Elena finding him.
And whoever had attacked him knew exactly who she was.
THE PENTHOUSE WAS NEVER THE PRIZE
That evening, Elena returned to the penthouse one final time.
The rooms were empty.
Julian's belongings were gone.
Camila's things were gone.
The silence was almost peaceful.
Elena walked toward the balcony.
She remembered standing there with Julian on their wedding night.
He had held her from behind.
“Look at this,” he'd whispered.
“All of this is ours.”
She had believed him.
Now she knew the truth.
The penthouse had never been the prize.
The resorts had never been the prize.
The money had never been the prize.
Julian had been fighting for something much bigger.
Control.
And now Elena understood why.
He wasn't afraid of losing luxury.
He was afraid of losing access to the Rossi family.
Because somewhere in the family structure was a secret that could make Julian irrelevant forever.
Elena's phone buzzed.
A message from her father.
THE CLINIC IS SECURE. COME NOW.
She picked up her coat.
Before leaving, she looked at the empty room.
“Goodbye.”
Not to the penthouse.
To the woman she had been when she first entered it.
THE MAN IN ROOM 417
At 10:11 p.m., Elena arrived at the clinic.
Her father was waiting outside room 417.
He looked exhausted.
“Is he awake?”
“No.”
“Can I see him?”
Her father hesitated.
“Yes.”
Elena opened the door.
A young man lay unconscious on the bed.
There was a bandage across his forehead.
Bruises covered one side of his face.
Elena stepped closer.
She didn't know him.
Yet something about him felt strangely familiar.
She looked at his hands.
Then his face.
Then the photograph.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Her grandfather.
Her family.
Her blood.
Elena whispered:
“Mateo.”
The man's eyes suddenly opened.
Elena stepped back.
His gaze found hers.
For several seconds, he looked confused.
Then terrified.
He tried to sit up.
“Who are you?”
Elena's heart pounded.
“My name is Elena.”
Mateo stared at her.
Then his face went pale.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“Why?”
He looked toward the door.
“Because if they know you found me…”
His voice weakened.
“Who?”
Mateo looked directly into her eyes.
“Julian.”
Elena froze.
Mateo grabbed her wrist.
“He isn't trying to steal your empire.”
“What is he trying to steal?”
Mateo's eyes filled with fear.
“Your inheritance.”
Elena stared.
“I already know about the trusts.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
“What don't I understand?”
Mateo whispered:
“Your grandmother didn't leave you the empire.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“She left you something far more dangerous.”
Before Elena could ask another question, the lights in the clinic went out.
A scream came from the hallway.
Then another.
Her father shouted:
“Elena!”
Emergency lights flickered on.
The room was empty.
Mateo was gone.
The window stood open.
Elena ran toward it.
Below, a black vehicle disappeared into the darkness.
On the floor where Mateo had been lying was a single object.
The emerald necklace.
Elena picked it up.
Her blood turned cold.
Because she knew exactly where it had come from.
It was not her grandmother's emerald.
It was an identical copy.
And engraved on the back were four letters she had never seen before:
M.V.R.
Elena stared at them.
Then slowly realized the terrible truth.
The woman in the penthouse had never been the real threat.
Julian had been preparing for something much bigger.
May you like
And now that Elena had found the hidden heir—
someone had decided to take him before she could learn what he knew.
