CHAPTER 10 — THE SECRET CAMILA NEVER KNEW

CHAPTER 10 — THE SECRET CAMILA NEVER KNEW
At 6:03 in the morning, Camila received a photograph that made her drop her phone.
She was sitting alone in a private apartment overlooking Mexico City.
She had not slept.
For the first time in seven years, she was no longer certain who she was working for.
Then the photograph appeared.
Elena.
Alive.
Sitting in a dark room.
Her wrists were tied.
Beside her was Sofia.
Camila covered her mouth.
“Oh God…”
A second message appeared.
YOU WANTED THE TRUTH. NOW YOU HAVE IT.
Camila stared at the screen.
Then another message.
COME ALONE.
She hesitated.
She knew better.
She should have called Julian.
She should have called the police.
She should have called Elena's father.
But she knew something they didn't.
For seven years, she had lived inside the Rossi family's secrets.
And there was one secret she had never been allowed to discover.
A secret that had nothing to do with money.
It had to do with who Sofia's mother really was.
THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD
Camila arrived at an abandoned chapel shortly after sunrise.
The building stood at the edge of an old vineyard.
No guards.
No cars.
No cameras.
At least none she could see.
She stepped inside.
“Hello?”
Her voice echoed.
A woman's voice answered from the darkness.
“You came.”
Camila froze.
She knew that voice.
Not personally.
But from recordings.
From old family videos.
From photographs.
She had heard it once before.
Years ago.
At a Rossi charity event.
Camila's heart began pounding.
“Who are you?”
The woman stepped into the light.
Camila's face went white.
“No…”
The woman smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
Camila backed away.
“But you're dead.”
“I know.”
“Everyone said you died.”
“I was supposed to.”
Camila stared at her.
The woman was older than the photographs.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face thinner.
But there was no mistaking her.
Sofia's mother.
The woman whose death had been accepted as fact for seven years.
The woman Victoria had claimed was gone.
The woman Elena had never known existed.
Camila whispered:
“Who are you?”
The woman looked directly into her eyes.
“My name is Isabella.”
THE FIRST LIE
Camila shook her head.
“No.”
Isabella stepped closer.
“You've seen me before.”
“Where?”
“At the Rossi estate.”
Camila searched her memory.
Then suddenly—
a flash.
A young woman standing beside Elena's grandmother.
Carrying flowers.
Smiling.
Camila's breath caught.
“You were her assistant.”
Isabella nodded.
“For a while.”
“What happened?”
“I disappeared.”
“Why?”
“Because I was pregnant.”
Camila stared.
“With Sofia?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did everyone believe you died?”
Isabella looked away.
“Because someone needed them to.”
“Who?”
Isabella's expression hardened.
“Your employer.”
Camila's blood ran cold.
“My employer?”
“Your father?”
“No.”
“Then Victoria?”
Isabella shook her head.
“Not Victoria.”
Camila waited.
Isabella finally whispered:
“Elena's father.”
THE MAN WHO ERASED HER
Camila sat down.
She couldn't process it.
“Why would he want you gone?”
“Because I knew about the trust.”
“What trust?”
“The one Elena has spent her entire life believing belongs to her.”
Camila stared.
Isabella continued.
“Sofia wasn't just Julian's daughter.”
Camila frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“She was the biological heir to something far more valuable than the Rossi resorts.”
“The second trust.”
“Yes.”
Camila remembered Julian's words.
She remembered Elena's face when she discovered it.
Everything suddenly connected.
“Your daughter was the reason they hid you.”
“No.”
Isabella's voice became quiet.
“I was the reason they hid my daughter.”
Camila looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because I was the only person who knew where the original documents were.”
“What documents?”
“The documents proving the Rossi fortune had been built on stolen assets.”
Camila went still.
“Stolen from whom?”
Isabella looked at her.
“My family.”
THE FAMILY BEFORE THE ROSSI FAMILY
For decades, Elena had been told that the Rossi fortune began with her great-grandfather.
That was a lie.
Isabella explained that the original fortune had belonged to another family.
The Villeneuve family.
They owned land across Mexico and Europe.
They had built the first luxury resorts in the region.
But after a political scandal, the family was nearly destroyed.
Their properties were transferred.
Their companies were dissolved.
Their bank accounts were frozen.
And one man emerged from the ruins.
Elena's great-grandfather.
He acquired everything.
For a fraction of its value.
Camila listened in disbelief.
“Then why did Sofia inherit anything?”
“Because my mother was a Villeneuve.”
Isabella paused.
“And so was Sofia.”
Camila's eyes widened.
“The trust…”
“Was created to compensate the Villeneuve heirs.”
“But Elena…”
“Was never supposed to know.”
THE SECOND TRUST
Isabella pulled an old document from her bag.
“This is the original agreement.”
Camila read it.
Her hands trembled.
The Rossi Family Trust was only one layer.
Beneath it was another.
THE VILLENEUVE RESTORATION TRUST.
Its purpose was simple.
If a legitimate Villeneuve heir appeared, a percentage of the Rossi assets would be transferred to that heir.
Not millions.
Not billions.
Almost forty percent of the entire family fortune.
Camila looked up.
“Sofia.”
Isabella nodded.
“Sofia is the last recognized Villeneuve heir.”
“Then why didn't Victoria simply reveal her?”
“Because Victoria wanted control.”
Camila frowned.
“Control of what?”
“Everything.”
Isabella's voice hardened.
“She needed Sofia alive.”
“Why?”
“Because without Sofia, the trust could not be activated.”
“But if Victoria controlled Sofia…”
“She controlled the money.”
Camila finally understood.
Victoria hadn't wanted the child dead.
She had wanted the child dependent.
A prisoner.
A living key.
THE SECRET CAMILA NEVER KNEW
Camila stood.
“Why did Victoria use me?”
Isabella looked at her.
“Because you were disposable.”
Camila flinched.
“No.”
“She needed someone close to Julian.”
“I thought I was helping your family.”
“You were helping Victoria.”
Camila shook her head.
“She told me she was protecting Elena.”
“She was.”
Camila froze.
“What?”
Isabella sighed.
“That's the part nobody understands.”
“Victoria did protect Elena.”
“Then why destroy her marriage?”
“Because Elena had to become independent.”
“Independent from Julian?”
“Independent from everyone.”
Isabella stepped closer.
“Victoria believed Elena would never fight her family while she still believed she had something to lose.”
Camila stared.
“So the humiliation…”
“The divorce.”
“The stolen money.”
“The affair.”
“The accusations.”
“All of it.”
Camila's voice broke.
“Was designed to destroy Elena?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“So Elena would stop protecting the Rossi empire.”
Camila shook her head.
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Isabella handed her another document.
“Read the final clause.”
Camila did.
Her eyes widened.
The clause stated that if Elena voluntarily abandoned control of the Rossi empire, the trust would activate.
Camila whispered:
“She had to walk away.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust was created to prevent the Rossi family from controlling it forever.”
Camila stared at the page.
Then everything became clear.
The resorts.
The betrayal.
Julian's mistress.
The missing money.
The public humiliation.
The accusations.
Victoria hadn't simply wanted to steal Elena's empire.
She wanted Elena to give it up willingly.
THE WOMAN WHO CHANGED SIDES
Camila looked at Isabella.
“What do you want from me?”
“Help.”
“With what?”
“Finding Elena.”
Camila's heart tightened.
“You know where she is.”
“Yes.”
“Then why haven't you rescued her?”
“Because I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Victoria is watching me.”
Camila frowned.
“Victoria doesn't know you're alive?”
“She does.”
“Then why hasn't she killed you?”
Isabella smiled sadly.
“Because she needs me.”
“For Sofia?”
“No.”
“For Elena.”
Camila's expression changed.
“What does Elena have to do with you?”
Isabella looked away.
“That is the secret I promised never to reveal.”
THE WOMAN IN ELENA'S PHOTOGRAPH
Isabella opened another file.
Inside was an old photograph.
Elena was perhaps six years old.
Her grandmother stood beside her.
And behind them—
Isabella.
Camila stared.
“You knew Elena.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I raised her for two years.”
Camila's jaw dropped.
“What?”
“After her mother disappeared.”
Camila stepped backward.
“Elena's mother?”
Isabella nodded.
“Everyone believed she abandoned the family.”
“She didn't.”
“No.”
“What happened?”
Isabella looked toward the window.
“She was murdered.”
Camila's blood ran cold.
“By whom?”
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
“That's the secret Victoria has spent twenty years protecting.”
ELENA'S MOTHER
Elena's mother hadn't died in an accident.
She had discovered the original Villeneuve documents.
She learned that the Rossi fortune contained stolen assets.
She planned to expose everything.
But before she could—
she disappeared.
Her body was never found.
The family announced that she had abandoned Elena.
But Isabella knew the truth.
“She was killed.”
“Who killed her?”
“I don't know.”
Camila stared.
“You don't know?”
“No.”
“But you said Victoria protected the secret.”
“She did.”
“Why protect the murderer?”
Isabella shook her head.
“Victoria wasn't protecting the murderer.”
She paused.
“She was protecting Elena from discovering who ordered it.”
Camila whispered:
“Who?”
Isabella looked directly at her.
“Her grandfather.”
THE MAN WHO STARTED EVERYTHING
Elena's grandfather had ordered the murder.
He had feared the truth would destroy the Rossi fortune.
So he created a cover story.
Elena's mother had abandoned her.
Then he manipulated the family.
He controlled the trust.
He controlled the lawyers.
He controlled the banks.
And eventually—
he controlled Julian.
Camila sat silently.
“Julian knew?”
“Not everything.”
“What did he know?”
“That Elena's mother didn't abandon her.”
“Why didn't he tell Elena?”
“Because he was threatened.”
“With what?”
“Sofia.”
Camila's eyes widened.
“They threatened his daughter?”
“Yes.”
“They told him Sofia would disappear if he exposed them.”
Camila understood why Julian had remained silent.
He hadn't been protecting his marriage.
He had been protecting his child.
But that still didn't excuse what he had done.
THE MESSAGE
Camila's phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
A message from Victoria.
WHERE ARE YOU?
Camila stared.
Isabella whispered:
“Don't answer.”
Another message arrived.
I KNOW YOU FOUND HER.
Camila's hands shook.
Then:
YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.
Camila looked at Isabella.
“She knows.”
“Yes.”
“What do we do?”
Isabella took a deep breath.
“We go to Elena.”
“Where?”
Isabella pulled out a key.
“The old Rossi vineyard.”
Camila frowned.
“Why there?”
“Because Elena's grandmother built a room beneath it.”
“What room?”
“The room where the original truth was hidden.”
THE ROOM BENEATH THE VINEYARD
At 11:32 a.m., Camila and Isabella reached the vineyard.
The old property looked abandoned.
But Isabella knew exactly where to go.
She stopped beside an ancient stone wall.
Then pressed her hand against a particular brick.
The ground shifted.
A staircase appeared.
Camila stared.
“How did you know?”
“Elena's grandmother showed me.”
They descended.
At the bottom was a steel door.
Isabella used the key.
The door opened.
Inside were hundreds of boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Contracts.
And one massive wooden chest.
Camila approached.
“What is that?”
“The beginning.”
“Of what?”
“The Rossi empire.”
She opened it.
Inside was an old ledger.
And beneath it—
a birth certificate.
Camila picked it up.
Her hands began trembling.
The name on it was unmistakable.
ELENA ROSSI.
But beneath her name was another line.
Biological mother: Isabella Villeneuve.
Camila dropped the paper.
“No…”
Isabella closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Camila stared at her.
“You're Elena's mother.”
Isabella nodded.
“And Sofia's mother.”
Camila couldn't breathe.
“One woman…”
“Two daughters.”
“And everyone thought you were dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then who is Elena's father?”
Isabella looked at her.
“That's the question Victoria has been trying to keep buried.”
Camila whispered:
“Julian?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Isabella took a trembling breath.
“Elena's biological father is not the man who raised her.”
Camila stared.
“Who is he?”
Isabella didn't answer.
Because footsteps echoed outside the room.
Someone was coming.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Camila grabbed Isabella's arm.
“Someone followed us.”
The lights went out.
A voice came through the darkness.
“Hello, Camila.”
Victoria.
THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
The lights returned.
Victoria stood at the doorway.
Two armed men behind her.
Camila stepped in front of Isabella.
Victoria smiled.
“You always were loyal to the wrong people.”
Camila's voice shook.
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed Elena's life.”
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“No.”
She looked toward Isabella.
“She did.”
Camila froze.
Isabella lowered her eyes.
Victoria continued.
“She is the one who disappeared.”
“She is the one who let Elena believe she had been abandoned.”
“She is the one who left Sofia.”
Camila turned toward Isabella.
“Is that true?”
Isabella's silence was answer enough.
Camila's face fell.
“Why?”
Isabella whispered:
“Because I was trying to save them.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“That's what everyone says.”
Then she looked at Camila.
“Do you want to know the secret she never told you?”
Camila said nothing.
Victoria pointed at Isabella.
“She didn't just disappear.”
“She chose to leave.”
THE CHOICE
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice.”
“My daughters would have died.”
“So you abandoned them.”
“I protected them.”
“You abandoned Elena.”
“I left because they threatened to kill her.”
“And Sofia?”
“I thought she was safe.”
Victoria's voice became colder.
“She wasn't.”
Isabella closed her eyes.
“I know.”
Camila stared at both women.
“What happened to Sofia?”
Victoria looked toward the door.
“She was taken.”
“By whom?”
Victoria's expression changed.
“By the man who ordered Elena's mother's death.”
Camila froze.
“But Elena's mother is—”
Victoria looked at Isabella.
“No.”
“She isn't Elena's mother.”
Camila's heart stopped.
Victoria smiled.
“That is the secret Camila never knew.”
She pointed toward the birth certificate.
“It is a forgery.”
Camila stared at the document.
Victoria stepped closer.
“Isabella Villeneuve is Sofia's mother.”
She paused.
“But she is not Elena's.”
Camila looked at Isabella.
Isabella was crying.
Victoria whispered:
“Because Elena's real mother died twenty years ago.”
Silence.
Then the lights flickered.
A distant explosion shook the underground chamber.
Everyone turned.
Smoke began filling the corridor.
Victoria's men rushed outside.
Camila grabbed Isabella.
“What's happening?”
Victoria looked toward the ceiling.
Her face suddenly changed.
“This wasn't me.”
Another explosion.
The walls shook.
Then Victoria looked at Camila.
“Someone else found us.”
THE WOMAN WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN
Across the vineyard, Elena opened her eyes.
She was no longer tied to the chair.
The room was empty.
Sofia was gone.
Elena stood unsteadily.
“Victoria?”
No answer.
She walked toward the door.
Unlocked.
She opened it.
A corridor.
At the end stood a man.
Elena froze.
“Dad?”
Her father stepped into the light.
His face was covered in blood.
He looked exhausted.
But alive.
Elena stared.
“You…”
He raised his hands.
“I came to get you.”
“Where's Sofia?”
His expression changed.
“I don't know.”
Elena's heart sank.
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
He looked behind her.
“Because Victoria was right about one thing.”
“What?”
“She isn't the person you should be afraid of.”
Elena stepped closer.
“Then who?”
Her father whispered:
“Your mother.”
Elena froze.
“My mother is dead.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
Elena's breathing stopped.
“She died twenty years ago.”
Her father looked into her eyes.
“We buried the wrong woman.”
And somewhere beneath the old vineyard, another door opened.
A woman stepped into the darkness.
She was holding a photograph of Elena.
On the back was written:
MY DAUGHTER.
She smiled.
May you like
Then whispered:
“It's time to come home.”
