CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT ELENA DISAPPEARED

CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT ELENA DISAPPEARED

The Grand Alcazar had never looked more beautiful than it did the night Elena Rossi disappeared.

That was what frightened her most.

The resort glittered beneath the moonlight, every window glowing gold against the dark mountains.

Guests laughed beside the infinity pool.

Music drifted from the rooftop terrace.

Luxury cars rolled beneath the entrance canopy.

Everything looked normal.

Perfect.

Almost peaceful.

But Elena knew better.

She had learned that the most dangerous lies were the ones hidden inside beautiful things.

And tonight, somewhere inside the Grand Alcazar, a little girl named Sofia was waiting for her.

THE WOMAN IN THE CAR

At 9:18 p.m., Elena sat in the back seat of a black SUV.

Julian sat opposite her.

Richard was in the passenger seat.

Two security vehicles followed behind.

Elena stared through the window.

“You're sure she's here?”

Richard nodded.

“Our people confirmed a child entered the resort three hours ago.”

“Sofia?”

“Yes.”

“Victoria?”

“We don't know.”

Elena looked at Julian.

He hadn't spoken for nearly ten minutes.

“You knew she would bring Sofia here.”

Julian looked up.

“I suspected.”

“That's not the same thing.”

“No.”

Elena folded her arms.

“Then tell me what you're afraid of.”

Julian stared at her.

“I'm afraid you'll believe her.”

“Victoria?”

“Yes.”

“Why would I?”

“Because she knows things about your family that I don't.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“That's what makes her dangerous.”

Julian nodded.

“She'll tell you things that are true.”

“And?”

“She'll mix them with lies.”

Elena looked away.

“Like you did.”

Julian flinched.

“Yes.”

The SUV slowed.

The Grand Alcazar entrance appeared ahead.

Elena took a deep breath.

Tonight she would finally meet the child at the center of the conspiracy.

She didn't know that within three hours, everyone would believe Elena Rossi was dead.

THE LITTLE GIRL

The hotel manager led Elena through a private corridor.

“She is waiting in the old presidential suite.”

“Who is with her?”

“No one.”

Elena stopped.

“No one?”

The manager shook his head.

“She specifically asked to speak with you alone.”

Julian immediately stepped forward.

“Absolutely not.”

Elena looked at him.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Julian.”

“It's a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then don't go.”

Elena looked toward the corridor.

“If I don't, Victoria wins.”

Richard intervened.

“We can place security inside.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Sofia is a child.”

Elena's voice softened.

“If she's been manipulated for years, surrounding her with armed guards will terrify her.”

Julian stared at her.

“Then take me with you.”

Elena hesitated.

Finally, she nodded.

“Fine.”

The suite door opened.

Inside, a little girl sat on the carpet beside the window.

She was seven years old.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

Holding a small wooden horse.

She turned when Elena entered.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Sofia whispered:

“You're Elena.”

Elena's heart tightened.

“Yes.”

Sofia studied her face.

“Grandmother said you would come.”

Elena slowly crouched.

“Your grandmother?”

“Victoria.”

Elena swallowed.

“What did she tell you about me?”

Sofia's eyes lowered.

“That you took everything.”

Elena felt the words like a knife.

“I didn't.”

Sofia looked at her.

“Then why does everyone hate you?”

Elena had no answer.

Because that was the cruelest thing about the conspiracy.

The child believed the lies.

And Elena suddenly understood that defeating Victoria would not be enough.

She had to save Sofia from what Victoria had taught her to believe.

THE SECRET IN THE HORSE

Sofia held out the wooden horse.

“Do you know what this is?”

Elena smiled faintly.

“A toy?”

Sofia shook her head.

“It's a key.”

Elena's smile disappeared.

“What kind of key?”

“The kind Grandmother said would open the Rossi vault.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Where did you get it?”

Sofia looked at him.

Her face changed.

“You.”

Julian froze.

“You know me?”

Sofia nodded.

“Grandmother showed me your picture.”

“What did she tell you?”

“That you were a bad man.”

Julian looked down.

Elena noticed the pain in his face.

“Did she tell you anything else?”

Sofia nodded.

“She said you were afraid of her.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“She wasn't wrong.”

Sofia turned to Elena.

“She also said Daddy loved you.”

Elena froze.

“Daddy?”

Sofia nodded.

“Your husband.”

Julian stared.

“I never…”

He stopped.

Sofia smiled sadly.

“Grandmother said you loved Elena so much that you became weak.”

Elena looked at Julian.

Neither spoke.

Then Sofia whispered:

“She said that was why she had to take me away.”

Elena's blood ran cold.

“Take you away from whom?”

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

“From my mother.”

Silence.

Elena crouched closer.

“Who is your mother?”

Sofia looked at her.

Then answered:

“Victoria.”

THE WOMAN WHO WASN'T HER MOTHER

Elena stared.

“No.”

Sofia nodded.

“She told me she was.”

Julian stepped forward.

“That's not possible.”

Sofia looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because…”

Julian stopped.

He didn't know how to explain it.

Elena asked gently:

“Do you remember your real mother?”

Sofia shook her head.

“She died.”

“Who told you?”

“Victoria.”

“When?”

“When I was little.”

Elena exchanged a look with Julian.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

“Where did she die?”

Sofia pointed toward the mountains.

“Near the old resort.”

Richard's voice came through Elena's earpiece.

“Elena, we need to leave.”

She frowned.

“Why?”

“Security cameras just went offline.”

Elena stood.

“Julian.”

“I heard.”

The lights flickered.

Sofia grabbed Elena's hand.

“Don't leave me.”

Elena squeezed her fingers.

“I won't.”

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Then the door slammed shut.

The electronic lock activated.

Julian rushed toward it.

“It's locked.”

Elena's heart raced.

“Call security.”

“I'm trying.”

No signal.

Richard's voice came through again.

“Elena, get out now.”

Then the communication died.

THE FIRE

Smoke began entering beneath the door.

Sofia coughed.

“Fire.”

Julian kicked the door.

Once.

Twice.

The lock held.

Elena looked around.

“There!”

A balcony.

They rushed toward it.

Julian opened the glass door.

Smoke filled the hallway behind them.

The alarm screamed.

Sofia began crying.

Elena lifted her.

“It's okay.”

Julian looked over the balcony.

“Too high.”

“Then what do we do?”

He pointed toward the neighboring suite.

“We jump across.”

Elena stared.

“You're insane.”

“Probably.”

Another explosion shook the building.

Elena tightened her arms around Sofia.

“Go.”

Julian climbed over the railing.

He jumped.

Landed hard.

Then reached back.

“Elena!”

She looked down.

Three floors.

Smoke everywhere.

Sofia was terrified.

“Mommy…”

Elena held her tighter.

“I'm here.”

She jumped.

Julian caught Elena's arm.

They crashed onto the neighboring balcony.

Sofia screamed.

Then—

BOOM.

The presidential suite erupted behind them.

Flames climbed into the night sky.

Guests began screaming below.

Fire alarms echoed throughout the resort.

And somewhere inside the chaos, someone smiled.

THE BODY

At 10:06 p.m., emergency crews surrounded the resort.

The fire was eventually contained.

But one person was missing.

Elena.

Julian stood outside the burned suite.

His shirt was torn.

Blood ran down his forehead.

“Where is she?”

A firefighter shook his head.

“We found no sign of her.”

“She was inside.”

“We know.”

“She had a child with her.”

The firefighter looked uncomfortable.

“We found something.”

He held up a small piece of jewelry.

Elena's wedding ring.

Julian stared at it.

“No.”

He grabbed it.

“This isn't proof.”

“We didn't say it was.”

“She's alive.”

Richard approached.

“Julian.”

“She is alive.”

Richard looked at him.

“We need to consider the possibility—”

“No.”

Julian's voice cracked.

“She promised me.”

Richard stopped.

Julian looked toward the burning building.

“She promised she wouldn't leave Sofia.”

THE WORLD HEARS THE NEWS

By midnight, the story had spread across Mexico.

ELENA ROSSI MISSING AFTER GRAND ALCAZAR FIRE

Then:

ROSSI HEIRESS PRESUMED DEAD

Then:

TRAGEDY STRIKES BILLION-DOLLAR FAMILY

The board called an emergency meeting.

Banks froze several accounts.

Investors panicked.

Stock prices collapsed.

Journalists surrounded every Rossi property.

But the worst came at 1:20 a.m.

A police statement appeared.

Evidence suggests Elena Rossi may have been responsible for the disappearance of Sofia Villeneuve.

Julian read the statement twice.

His hands trembled.

“What?”

Richard took the phone.

“This is fabricated.”

“They're framing her.”

“Yes.”

Julian looked at the ruined hotel.

“She survived the fire.”

Richard stared.

“How do you know?”

“Because I know her.”

Richard didn't answer.

Julian continued:

“She wouldn't let them take Sofia.”

THE SECOND BODY

At 2:15 a.m., police discovered a burned vehicle three miles from the resort.

Inside was a body.

Female.

Unidentified.

The press immediately reported it.

ELENA ROSSI'S BODY FOUND

Julian nearly collapsed.

“No.”

Richard grabbed him.

“Wait.”

The body was badly burned.

There was no face.

No fingerprints.

Only one item could be identified.

A necklace.

The emerald pendant Elena had worn since childhood.

Julian stared at the photograph.

“That isn't hers.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she gave it to Camila.”

Richard looked at him.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

Silence.

Someone had planted the necklace.

Someone wanted the world to believe Elena was dead.

Julian looked toward the city.

“She's alive.”

Richard nodded.

“But where?”

ELENA WAKES

Elena opened her eyes.

Darkness.

Her head throbbed.

Her wrists were tied.

She tried to move.

Nothing.

Then she heard a child's breathing.

“Sofia?”

A small voice answered.

“I'm here.”

Elena exhaled.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Where are we?”

“I don't know.”

Elena tried to sit up.

Her head spun.

A single light hung above them.

Concrete walls.

A metal door.

No windows.

A basement.

Sofia crawled closer.

“They took us.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Elena looked around.

Then she heard footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

The door opened.

A woman entered.

Elena's blood froze.

Victoria.

Alive.

Calm.

Elegant.

Not a single trace of fear.

Elena stared.

“You.”

Victoria smiled.

“Good morning.”

Elena lunged toward her.

“You kidnapped us!”

Victoria stepped back.

“No.”

“You burned the hotel.”

“No.”

“You killed someone.”

Victoria's expression became cold.

“I saved you.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“By tying me to a chair?”

“Because the people outside want you dead.”

“Who?”

Victoria said nothing.

Elena's voice sharpened.

“Who?”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Your father.”

Elena froze.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE FIRE

Victoria sat across from Elena.

“You believe I caused the fire.”

“You did.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Your father.”

Elena stared.

Victoria continued.

“He wanted you dead.”

“Why?”

“Because you discovered the Second Trust.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if you understand the contract.”

“What contract?”

“The one your grandmother created.”

Victoria leaned closer.

“Your father was supposed to inherit everything when you died.”

Elena's face changed.

“What?”

“Yes.”

“That's impossible.”

“Read the original trust.”

Victoria placed a document on the table.

Elena looked at it.

The clause was there.

If Elena Rossi dies without recognized heirs, control passes to her father.

Elena's breathing stopped.

“But Sofia is an heir.”

“Exactly.”

Victoria looked at the little girl.

“That is why they wanted her gone.”

Sofia moved closer to Elena.

“Why?”

Victoria's voice softened.

“Because your father needed you dead before the world learned Sofia existed.”

Elena stared.

“And Julian?”

“Julian was supposed to help.”

“No.”

Victoria smiled.

“He refused.”

Elena looked at the door.

“Then why did he come?”

“Because he loves you.”

She paused.

“And because he finally realized what your father was willing to do.”

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE BETRAYAL

Elena looked at Victoria.

“You betrayed me.”

Victoria's expression softened.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed you to hate me.”

“What?”

“If you trusted me, your father would have killed you.”

Elena stared.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Victoria reached into her coat.

She removed an old photograph.

She handed it to Elena.

It showed Elena's father.

Standing beside a younger man.

The younger man was holding a newborn baby.

Sofia.

Elena's blood froze.

On the back was a date.

Seven years ago.

And beneath it:

THE NIGHT YOUR FATHER ORDERED THE CHILD REMOVED.

Elena stared.

Her father had known Sofia existed.

He had known the child was alive.

He had known Julian was her father.

And yet he had allowed Elena to believe the entire conspiracy belonged to Victoria.

Elena looked at Victoria.

“Why show me this now?”

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“Because there is one more person you haven't considered.”

“Who?”

Victoria looked toward Sofia.

“The child's mother.”

Elena froze.

“But you said—”

“I said she died.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Victoria turned toward the door.

Before leaving, she whispered:

“She has been alive this entire time.”

The door slammed shut.

Elena stared after her.

Sofia looked frightened.

“Who is my mommy?”

Elena couldn't answer.

Because somewhere beneath all the lies was a truth even more terrifying.

Sofia's mother was alive.

And if Victoria had lied about her death…

then the entire story of Sofia's birth had been a lie.

THE WOMAN IN THE DARK

Two hours later, Victoria entered another room.

A woman sat beside a window.

Her face was hidden in darkness.

Victoria closed the door.

“She knows.”

The woman didn't turn.

“Does she know everything?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Victoria.”

“Yes?”

“Did Elena see the photograph?”

“Yes.”

The woman smiled.

“Then she will come looking.”

Victoria looked uncomfortable.

“She may hate us.”

“She already does.”

“And Sofia?”

“She must never know the truth.”

Victoria was silent.

The woman finally turned.

Her face appeared beneath the dim light.

Elena would have recognized her instantly.

Because she had seen that face before.

At family weddings.

At funerals.

In old photographs.

The woman smiled.

“She believes I'm dead.”

Victoria stared.

“So does everyone.”

“Let them.”

She looked at the photograph of Elena.

Then whispered:

“Because the only way to save my daughter…”

Her eyes hardened.

“…is to make Elena believe I betrayed her.”

THE FINAL MESSAGE

At sunrise, Julian stood alone outside the Grand Alcazar.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

SHE IS ALIVE.

He stared.

Another message appeared.

STOP LOOKING FOR HER.

Then:

OR THE CHILD DIES.

Julian's blood ran cold.

A final photograph appeared.

Elena.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

Sofia beside her.

Julian's hands trembled.

He immediately called the number.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Then a final message appeared.

YOU HAVE 24 HOURS.

Julian looked at the burning remains of the resort.

For nine years, he had believed the Rossi empire was the most powerful thing in his life.

He had been wrong.

Now the empire was collapsing.

Elena was missing.

Sofia was being hunted.

Victoria was manipulating everyone.

And his own family might have ordered the woman he loved to die.

Julian put the phone in his pocket.

Then looked toward the horizon.

“I'll find you,” he whispered.

“I don't care who I have to destroy.”

But he didn't know the most devastating truth yet.

The woman who had disappeared that night had not been Elena alone.

Someone else had disappeared with her.

Someone whose existence would change the Rossi family forever.

And when Elena finally escaped…

May you like

she would not return as the woman who left.

She would return with a secret that could destroy every person who had ever lied to her.
