Chapter 10

A Daughter Disposable

Richard Hale loved only one thing.

Control.

Not money.

Not reputation.

Not even family.

To him, people existed for one purpose.

They were useful...

Until they weren't.

Victoria had spent her entire life believing she was different.

She was his daughter.

His favorite child.

The heir to his empire.

She was wrong.

The explosion beneath Raven Ridge Quarry shook the entire valley.

Dust billowed from the collapsed warehouse as FBI agents rushed toward the hidden tunnel entrance.

"Stabilize the opening!" Detective Laura Mitchell shouted.

Engineers scrambled to reinforce the weakened supports while SWAT officers prepared breathing equipment.

Arthur fought to push past the barricade.

"They're down there!"

Agent Rebecca Collins grabbed his arm.

"If you go in now, you'll kill yourself—and you won't save them."

Arthur's fists clenched.

Every instinct told him to dig with his bare hands.

But she was right.

One wrong move could bring the entire tunnel down.

Edward stood beside him, staring at the collapsing ground.

His voice was almost a whisper.

"Hold on, my children..."

Miles away...

Richard Hale calmly watched live drone footage of the quarry from his private office.

One of his security directors looked uneasy.

"The FBI found the bunker."

Richard nodded.

"I expected they would."

"They're sealing the entrance."

"There are other exits."

The man hesitated.

"And the children?"

Richard remained silent for several seconds.

Finally, he answered.

"They're still valuable."

"What about Victoria?"

Richard looked out the window.

"What about her?"

"She's asking questions."

Richard smiled faintly.

"Then she has forgotten something."

"What?"

"Questions have consequences."

Victoria arrived at Hale Financial Group less than twenty minutes later.

She stormed into her father's office without knocking.

"You lied to me."

Richard didn't look up from the document he was signing.

"About what this time?"

"The children."

"The explosion."

"The bunker."

He calmly capped his fountain pen.

"You've been speaking with the wrong people."

Victoria slammed both hands onto his desk.

"Were you involved?"

Richard looked at her with complete indifference.

"What answer would satisfy you?"

"The truth."

He smiled.

"The truth is rarely satisfying."

Victoria felt something inside her break.

"I defended you."

"I defended this family."

"I destroyed my marriage because you told me loyalty mattered."

Richard slowly stood.

"It does."

"Then tell me I'm wrong."

Silence.

She stepped backward.

"You won't."

Richard walked around the desk.

"You mistake silence for guilt."

"I mistake it for an answer."

He stopped only inches away.

"You've become emotional."

"I've become afraid."

"For the children?"

Victoria looked directly into his eyes.

"For us."

Richard's expression hardened.

"You've forgotten who you are."

"No."

Victoria whispered.

"I finally remembered."

She turned and walked toward the door.

Richard spoke without raising his voice.

"If you leave now..."

"Don't come back."

Victoria paused.

Slowly...

She looked over her shoulder.

"For the first time in my life..."

"I don't think I want to."

She walked out.

The office door closed behind her.

Richard didn't call after her.

Instead...

He pressed the small silver button hidden beneath his desk.

His security chief entered.

"Mr. Hale?"

Richard spoke only four words.

"Begin Contingency Plan Delta."

The man's face lost all color.

"Sir..."

"She's your daughter."

Richard's eyes never changed.

"No."

"They're all replaceable."

At that same moment...

Victoria's phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

A trembling voice replied.

"Mrs. Blackwood?"

It was Rosa Delgado.

Barely audible.

"I escaped."

Victoria froze.

"Where are you?"

"I don't know."

"They're looking for me."

Victoria looked around the underground parking garage.

"Stay where you are."

"I'm coming."

Rosa hesitated.

"You shouldn't."

"Why?"

"Because..."

"...your father knows."

The call disconnected.

Meanwhile...

Deep beneath Raven Ridge Quarry...

Maya pulled Leo behind the old boiler described in the diary.

The tunnel was narrow.

Barely wide enough for two children.

Behind them, distant voices echoed through the bunker.

"They're gone!"

"Find them!"

The tattooed man shouted orders as footsteps thundered through the corridors.

Leo whispered,

"What if they catch us?"

Maya squeezed his hand.

"Then we keep running."

The tunnel sloped upward.

Cold air drifted through the darkness.

They had almost reached the end when Maya stopped suddenly.

A faint beam of daylight filtered through a rusted metal grate.

"We're close."

Together they pushed.

The grate refused to move.

Years of rust held it in place.

Below them...

The kidnappers were getting closer.

Above ground...

FBI engineers finally broke through the reinforced entrance.

SWAT teams rushed into the bunker.

Empty hallways.

Open cell doors.

Abandoned equipment.

Mitchell's heart sank.

"They moved them."

Arthur noticed something else.

The prison had been evacuated in a hurry.

Documents littered the floor.

Half-packed boxes.

Computers still running.

Someone hadn't expected the FBI to arrive so quickly.

Officer Cruz entered one of the offices.

"Detective!"

Mitchell hurried over.

Pinned to a corkboard were photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Witnesses.

Journalists.

Judges.

Police officers.

Business rivals.

Each photograph had notes beside it.

Some were marked PAID.

Others...

SILENCED.

Then Arthur saw two familiar faces.

Maya.

Leo.

Their photographs were marked with a single word.

RECOVER

Edward looked confused.

"Recover?"

Mitchell's expression darkened.

"They weren't planning to kill them immediately."

Arthur frowned.

"Why?"

Mitchell stared at another file.

Because beneath the photographs lay an old legal document.

It was a guardianship petition.

Prepared fifteen years earlier.

Signed by Richard Hale.

Requesting emergency custody of Maya and Leo after their parents' deaths.

The petition had never been filed.

Edward slowly understood.

"He wanted control of their inheritance."

Mitchell nodded.

"When the children disappeared..."

"He lost access to everything."

Arthur looked at the abandoned office in disbelief.

"So this wasn't revenge."

"No."

Mitchell answered quietly.

"It started as greed."

Across the city...

Victoria reached the abandoned motel where Rosa had asked to meet.

She searched every room.

No sign of Rosa.

Only silence.

Then she noticed a small envelope taped beneath the office counter.

Her name was written across it.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

If you're reading this, I couldn't trust anyone else.

Your father has been watching you since yesterday.

Don't go home.

Victoria's hands trembled.

Before she could react...

A black SUV slowly pulled into the motel parking lot.

Three men stepped out.

One wore a dragon tattoo curling up his neck.

Victoria instinctively backed away.

The tattooed man smiled.

"Miss Hale."

"Your father wants to see you."

Victoria's voice shook.

"I'll drive myself."

The man slowly drew a pistol fitted with a suppressor.

"I'm afraid..."

"That wasn't a request."

As the men closed in...

Victoria finally understood the truth she had refused to believe.

She wasn't Richard Hale's daughter anymore.

She was a liability.

And in Richard Hale's world...

Liabilities disappeared.

Far away, beneath the ruins of Raven Ridge Quarry...

Maya and Leo gave one final desperate push against the rusted grate.

With a deafening crack...

It burst open.

Fresh mountain air rushed into the tunnel.

Sunlight flooded the darkness.

For one brief, glorious moment...

They believed they were free.

Neither child saw the shadow waiting just beyond the opening.

A voice spoke calmly.

"I've been looking for you."

Maya froze.

The voice didn't belong to the tattooed man.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone neither she nor Leo had ever met.

May you like

Someone who knew exactly who they were.
