Chapter 9

The Secret Basement

Some prisons were built with steel bars.

Others were built with silence.

The room where Maya and Leo were being held had neither.

It was hidden so well that no one was ever supposed to find it.

Not by the police.

Not by the FBI.

Not even by the people who worked above it.

It had been designed decades earlier for one purpose.

To make people disappear.

The black SUV finally came to a stop.

A heavy metal door slid open.

Cold air rushed inside.

The tattooed man yanked Maya to her feet.

"Move."

Leo instinctively reached for his sister.

The kidnapper shoved him forward.

"You too."

They were led through a narrow concrete tunnel lit by dim yellow bulbs. The walls were damp, stained by years of moisture. Every footstep echoed through the passage.

Maya counted silently.

Forty-two steps.

Left turn.

Another staircase.

A thick steel door.

Everything she saw, she memorized.

The basement looked more like an underground bunker than a prison.

Several rooms lined the corridor.

Steel doors.

Reinforced locks.

Security cameras.

The smell of old concrete and machine oil filled the air.

In one corner stood shelves stacked with dusty boxes labeled with years dating back more than twenty years.

The tattooed man unlocked the final room.

"This will be your home."

The heavy door slammed shut behind them.

Leo wrapped his arms around himself.

"Will they kill us?"

Maya forced herself to stay calm.

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because if they wanted us dead..."

"They wouldn't have brought us here."

Leo nodded slowly.

She wasn't sure if she believed her own words.

But fear would help no one.

Hours later...

A small hatch opened in the steel door.

A tray of food slid inside.

The tattooed man crouched outside the opening.

"You should eat."

Maya looked at him.

"What does Richard Hale want with us?"

The man smiled.

"You ask too many questions."

"Then answer one."

Silence.

Finally, he said,

"You remind him of someone."

"Who?"

"Your father."

The hatch slammed shut.

Back at Blackwood Manor...

Detective Laura Mitchell studied the map spread across the conference table.

Maya's clues had narrowed the search.

A river crossing.

Mountain roads.

An abandoned structure.

Edward looked exhausted.

"There are dozens of old mining facilities in that region."

Officer Cruz nodded.

"And several Cold War bunkers."

Arthur stared at the map.

"They're underground."

Mitchell looked up.

"What makes you think that?"

Arthur held up Leo's backpack.

"The dirt."

Everyone looked closer.

The dust coating the backpack wasn't ordinary soil.

It was pale gray.

Almost white.

Edward immediately recognized it.

"Limestone."

Arthur nodded.

"They're somewhere beneath limestone."

Meanwhile...

Rosa Delgado sat in a dark room, her hands tied to a wooden chair.

She had escaped once.

Only to be captured again hours later.

A single light hung from the ceiling.

The door opened.

Richard Hale entered.

He looked exactly as he always had.

Perfect suit.

Perfect posture.

Perfect smile.

He carried two cups of coffee.

"I hear you enjoy Colombian roast."

He placed one cup on the table.

Rosa stared at him.

"You murdered those people."

Richard sighed.

"I dislike dramatic language."

"You murdered them."

"I solved problems."

Her eyes filled with anger.

"They were innocent."

Richard calmly sipped his coffee.

"Innocence is a luxury."

"Power is reality."

Rosa leaned forward.

"You'll never get away with this."

Richard smiled.

"I already have."

"For fifteen years."

He stood.

"And if history has taught me anything..."

"It's that people believe the version told by the winner."

He walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

"Oh..."

"The children are still alive."

"For now."

The door closed behind him.

Detective Mitchell received another breakthrough.

Forensic analysts had recovered data from one of the damaged hard drives stolen during the evidence room break-in.

Only fragments remained.

Most files had been destroyed.

One surveillance image survived.

It showed Victor Kane entering an abandoned property fifteen years earlier.

Mitchell enlarged the address painted on a nearby water tower.

Raven Ridge Quarry

Officer Cruz immediately searched property records.

"The quarry closed twenty-two years ago."

"What owns it now?"

He frowned.

"A real estate holding company."

"Name?"

"Horizon Development."

Arthur looked toward Edward.

Edward slowly closed his eyes.

"Horizon..."

"Richard Hale founded that company."

Within an hour...

An FBI helicopter circled above Raven Ridge Quarry.

The abandoned site stretched across hundreds of acres.

Collapsed buildings.

Overgrown roads.

Rusting machinery.

Everything appeared deserted.

Agent Collins looked through thermal imaging equipment.

"Nothing."

Mitchell frowned.

"No heat?"

"None."

Arthur whispered,

"They're hiding beneath us."

Ground-penetrating radar equipment arrived shortly afterward.

Engineers slowly scanned the quarry floor.

Most readings showed solid rock.

Then...

A rectangular void appeared nearly sixty feet below ground.

One engineer looked stunned.

"That's impossible."

Mitchell stepped closer.

"What is it?"

"A man-made structure."

"How large?"

He stared at the screen.

"Bigger than this entire building."

Arthur's pulse quickened.

"A bunker."

Inside the underground prison...

Maya examined every corner of their cell.

There were no windows.

Only concrete walls.

One small air vent.

And a cracked floor tile near the bed.

She carefully lifted it.

Beneath the tile lay an old rusted metal box.

Inside...

She found faded papers wrapped in cloth.

Leo looked over her shoulder.

"What is it?"

Maya unfolded the first page.

It was a diary.

The writing was shaky.

The date read:

April 3, 2008.

She turned another page.

If someone finds this...

Richard Hale built this place.

He brings people here.

Witnesses.

Partners.

Anyone who learns too much.

Maya's breathing became uneven.

She continued reading.

Some never leave.

The final page contained only one sentence.

There's another exit behind the old boiler.

At that exact moment...

The steel door opened.

The tattooed man entered carrying fresh water.

His eyes immediately landed on the open diary.

His face changed.

"Where did you find that?"

Maya quietly folded the pages.

"It was under the floor."

He rushed toward her.

But she had already memorized the final sentence.

Another exit.

Behind the old boiler.

Back above ground...

FBI engineers finished scanning the quarry.

"There."

One technician pointed toward a collapsed warehouse.

"The tunnel entrance is beneath that building."

Mitchell immediately ordered,

"Move in."

SWAT officers spread across the property.

Explosives experts approached the warehouse cautiously.

Arthur could barely breathe.

Every second felt like an hour.

Suddenly...

The ground trembled.

A muffled explosion echoed from deep below.

Dust burst from cracks in the earth.

Officer Cruz shouted,

"They're collapsing the tunnels!"

Mitchell grabbed her radio.

"All units!"

"Move!"

"If those tunnels come down..."

She never finished the sentence.

Arthur was already running toward the warehouse.

Behind him, Edward followed without hesitation.

Neither man cared about the danger.

Only one thought filled their minds.

Somewhere beneath their feet...

Maya and Leo were still alive.

May you like

And the monster hiding underground had just decided to bury every secret forever.
