Chapter 2

The Children Nobody Recognized

Some people spend their entire lives searching for wealth.

Others spend their lives searching for family.

Edward Sterling had spent fifteen years searching for two children.

And until that evening...

He had found nothing.

Victoria didn't sleep.

She paced endlessly inside the east guest house, replaying the phone call over and over.

"The missing heirs to the Sterling family."

It sounded absurd.

Maya and Leo?

The quiet children she had dismissed as unwanted orphans?

Impossible.

Arthur had always introduced them as children he had taken in after a tragic accident.

No famous family.

No inheritance.

No connections.

She convinced herself it had to be a mistake.

Yet a knot of unease settled in her stomach.

For the first time in years, certainty abandoned her.

Inside the main mansion, the atmosphere was completely different.

Dr. Emily Carter carefully examined Maya's cheek while Leo sat quietly beside his sister.

"The swelling will go down in a few days," the doctor said gently.

"But they'll both be frightened for a while."

Arthur nodded.

"Thank you."

After the doctor left, Maya looked at Arthur.

"Are we the reason you're divorcing Victoria?"

Arthur sat beside her.

"No."

She frowned.

"But—"

"No, Maya."

He spoke firmly but kindly.

"My marriage ended because an adult chose cruelty."

"You didn't cause that."

"She did."

Leo looked down at the floor.

"We tried to be good."

Arthur's heart broke.

He placed a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"You never have to earn the right to be treated with kindness."

Later that night, Arthur stood alone in his study.

He unlocked a small wooden cabinet hidden behind a bookshelf.

Inside rested an old leather folder.

Across the front were two handwritten names.

Maya

Leo

He slowly opened it.

Fifteen years earlier...

A rainy highway.

Twisted metal.

A burning SUV.

A little girl crying while shielding a baby boy beneath a roadside tree.

Arthur had been twenty-nine years old.

Driving home after a charity fundraiser.

He had stopped to help.

Police searched for the children's relatives.

Weeks became months.

Months became years.

No one ever claimed them.

Eventually, Arthur became their legal guardian.

He never intended to replace their parents.

He simply refused to let them grow up believing they had been abandoned.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

His attorney, Benjamin Reeves, entered carrying a tablet.

"The divorce papers are ready."

Arthur nodded.

"File them first thing tomorrow."

Benjamin hesitated.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"A private investigator called."

"He says representatives from Sterling International have been asking questions about two children adopted after a highway accident fifteen years ago."

Arthur slowly looked up.

"The Sterlings?"

Benjamin nodded.

"They've requested a meeting."

Across town...

Inside the penthouse headquarters of Sterling International...

An elderly man stood before an enormous wall covered in photographs.

Hundreds of missing-child reports.

Age-progression sketches.

Maps.

Investigative notes.

At the center hung one faded family portrait.

A smiling young couple.

A little girl with bright eyes.

A baby boy wrapped in a blue blanket.

Edward Sterling touched the photograph with trembling fingers.

"I promised I'd find you."

A security director entered.

"Sir."

Edward turned.

"We received another lead."

His tired eyes filled with cautious hope.

"Is this one credible?"

"We believe so."

The director handed him a recent photograph of Maya and Leo taken outside Blackwood Manor.

Edward stared silently.

Then his breathing changed.

He stepped closer.

His hand trembled over Maya's picture.

"The birthmark..."

He whispered.

"It's exactly where Sophia had one."

His late daughter-in-law.

The same tiny crescent-shaped birthmark behind the left ear.

Something no newspaper had ever reported.

Edward closed his eyes.

"They're alive."

The next morning...

Victoria marched into the mansion despite Arthur's order to stay away.

She found Maya helping Leo with breakfast.

Neither child spoke.

Victoria folded her arms.

"So."

"I hear you're both suddenly important."

Maya looked confused.

"We don't know what you're talking about."

Victoria leaned closer.

"Don't pretend."

Arthur entered before she could continue.

"What are you doing here?"

"I'm still your wife."

"No."

Arthur replied evenly.

"You are a guest waiting to leave."

Victoria pointed toward the children.

"They've lied to you."

"They're manipulating everyone."

Arthur's expression remained calm.

"Enough."

"You always choose them!"

"I choose decency."

Security entered the dining room.

Arthur didn't raise his voice.

"Escort Mrs. Blackwood off the property."

Victoria glared at Maya.

"This isn't over."

Leo instinctively moved behind Arthur.

Arthur noticed.

His decision felt even more certain.

By noon...

Black SUVs approached the gates of Blackwood Manor.

The guards immediately contacted Arthur.

"Sir..."

"There's a convoy requesting permission to enter."

"Who are they?"

"The lead vehicle belongs to Sterling International."

Arthur walked outside.

The gates slowly opened.

One by one, the vehicles entered the estate.

The final limousine stopped directly before the mansion steps.

An elderly gentleman emerged with the quiet confidence of someone who had spent decades carrying responsibility.

Edward Sterling.

One of the wealthiest businessmen in the country.

Yet his eyes were fixed on only two people.

Maya.

And Leo.

He didn't notice the mansion.

He didn't notice Arthur.

He didn't notice the staff standing in respectful silence.

He only saw the children.

Maya tilted her head slightly.

The elderly man's eyes filled with tears.

He smiled through them.

"I've been looking for you..."

His voice nearly broke.

"...for fifteen years."

Neither child understood.

Leo squeezed Maya's hand.

Arthur stepped forward.

"Mr. Sterling."

Edward nodded politely.

"I apologize for arriving without notice."

He looked back at the children.

"But I couldn't wait another day."

He slowly reached into his jacket pocket.

Removing an old, faded photograph.

It showed the same two children.

Fifteen years younger.

The little girl in the picture wore a tiny silver bracelet engraved with the letter M.

Maya instinctively touched the bracelet she still wore every day.

The one found on her wrist after the accident.

Edward stared at it in disbelief.

Tears rolled freely down his face.

"My granddaughter..."

He whispered.

Then he looked at Leo.

"And my grandson."

Silence fell across the entire estate.

Even Victoria, watching secretly from the guest house window, felt the color drain from her face.

Because if Edward Sterling was telling the truth...

The two children she had slapped were not forgotten orphans.

They were the only surviving heirs to one of the largest fortunes in the country.

And her actions the day before had just become far more than a family dispute.

May you like

They had become the biggest mistake of her life.
