Chapter 3

Chapter 3
The Billionaire Grandfather
Money could buy almost anything.
Power.
Influence.
Silence.
But after fifteen years of searching, Edward Sterling would have traded every dollar he owned for one more chance to hear his grandchildren call him "Grandpa."
Now they stood only a few feet away.
Yet he was afraid to take another step.
The courtyard of Blackwood Manor had fallen completely silent.
The line of black SUVs remained parked behind Edward Sterling, their drivers and security team standing respectfully at a distance.
No one dared interrupt the moment.
Maya instinctively tightened her grip on Leo's hand.
The elderly stranger's eyes were filled with tears.
Not anger.
Not excitement.
Only overwhelming relief.
Arthur quietly moved beside the children.
"They don't have to speak if they aren't comfortable."
Edward nodded immediately.
"Of course."
His voice was gentle.
"I don't want to frighten them."
He slowly held out the faded photograph.
Maya accepted it carefully.
She stared at the smiling family in the picture.
The little girl looked strangely familiar.
She wore the same silver bracelet.
The same tiny birthmark behind her left ear.
The same curious smile.
Leo pointed at the baby in the photograph.
"He looks like me."
Edward smiled sadly.
"He is you."
Neither child spoke.
Their world had changed in the span of a single minute.
Arthur placed a reassuring hand on Maya's shoulder.
"Take your time."
She looked up at Edward.
"Are... are you really our grandfather?"
Edward swallowed hard.
"I believe so."
"But I don't want you to believe me because I say it."
He turned toward one of his assistants.
A woman stepped forward carrying a leather briefcase.
She carefully removed several old albums.
Birth certificates.
Hospital records.
Family photographs.
Each one had been preserved for years.
Edward knelt slowly so he was at eye level with the children.
"I've carried these everywhere."
"I promised your parents I would never stop looking."
Maya turned another page.
There was a photograph of a birthday party.
A little girl blowing out five candles.
Edward stood behind her, laughing.
Beside him was a young couple.
The woman had Maya's eyes.
The man had Leo's smile.
Something stirred deep inside Maya's memory.
A voice.
Warm.
Gentle.
"Hold your brother's hand, sweetheart."
She suddenly pressed a hand against her temple.
Arthur noticed immediately.
"Maya?"
"My head..."
Her breathing quickened.
"I think..."
"I remember..."
A flash.
Rain.
Darkness.
A woman's scream.
A bright orange glow.
The smell of smoke.
A man's voice shouting,
"Run!"
Then...
Nothing.
Maya gasped.
Arthur caught her before she lost her balance.
"It's okay."
The memories disappeared as quickly as they came.
Edward's eyes filled with fresh tears.
"She remembers."
Arthur looked at him.
"Only pieces."
Edward nodded.
"That's more than we've had in fifteen years."
Inside the mansion...
Victoria watched everything through the upstairs window.
Her hands trembled.
She immediately called her mother.
"Mom."
"What happened?"
"The Sterling family found the children."
Silence.
Then her mother spoke quietly.
"That's impossible."
"I saw him."
"Edward Sterling is at the house."
Another long silence.
Finally...
"Leave immediately."
Victoria frowned.
"What?"
"Do exactly what I say."
Her mother's voice had changed.
Cold.
Urgent.
"Don't speak to anyone."
"Don't answer questions."
"And whatever happens..."
"Never mention your father's business with the Sterlings."
The call ended.
Victoria stared at the phone.
Her father had business with them?
Why had no one ever told her?
Back outside...
Benjamin Reeves arrived carrying emergency legal documents.
Arthur introduced him to Edward.
"My attorney."
Edward shook his hand politely.
"I appreciate everything Mr. Blackwood has done."
Arthur answered before Benjamin could speak.
"I didn't do it for recognition."
"I know."
Edward smiled.
"You did it because two frightened children needed someone."
He looked back at Maya and Leo.
"For fifteen years..."
"You've been the father they deserved."
Arthur said quietly,
"I simply loved them."
Edward lowered his head for a moment.
"Thank you."
Later that afternoon...
Private family court Judge Amelia Ross arrived at the estate.
Not because anyone was fighting over custody.
Because Edward had requested an emergency legal conference.
The judge listened carefully as Arthur explained the children's adoption.
Every document was complete.
Every procedure had been legal.
When Arthur finished, Edward stood.
"I have no intention of taking them away."
Everyone looked at him.
"I lost my son."
"My daughter-in-law."
"And fifteen years with my grandchildren."
His voice shook.
"I won't ask them to lose another father."
Arthur looked genuinely surprised.
Edward smiled.
"If they'll allow it..."
"I'd like to become part of their lives."
"Not replace yours."
The judge nodded approvingly.
"The children's well-being comes first."
Maya looked between the two men.
Then quietly asked,
"Does that mean..."
"We can have both?"
Arthur smiled.
"If that's what you want."
Edward's eyes filled with tears again.
"So do I."
That evening...
Detective Laura Mitchell from the State Major Crimes Division arrived unexpectedly.
Arthur greeted her at the front entrance.
"I wasn't expecting police."
She held up an identification badge.
"I'm not here because of the children."
"Then why?"
She looked toward Edward.
"Fifteen years ago, the Sterling family disappearance was officially ruled a traffic accident."
Edward's expression darkened.
"We always questioned that conclusion."
Detective Mitchell nodded.
"This morning..."
She removed a sealed evidence envelope.
"We reopened the case."
Arthur frowned.
"What changed?"
"A retired forensic investigator came forward."
She placed several photographs on the table.
"The fire that killed your son wasn't caused by the collision."
Edward slowly looked up.
"What are you saying?"
She answered quietly.
"The vehicle exploded before it hit the guardrail."
The room became silent.
"It wasn't an accident."
Maya tightened her grip on Leo's hand.
Edward closed his eyes.
He had feared those words for years.
Hearing them spoken aloud made them real.
Arthur asked,
"Do you know who did it?"
Detective Mitchell shook her head.
"Not yet."
"But we know someone tampered with the original investigation."
She opened another file.
"There are missing reports."
"Altered evidence."
"And two detectives assigned to the case resigned within forty-eight hours."
Edward whispered,
"They were paid."
"We're beginning to think so."
Before anyone could speak again...
One of Edward's security officers rushed into the room.
"Sir."
Edward stood immediately.
"What happened?"
"We intercepted someone attempting to photograph the children from outside the estate."
Arthur frowned.
"Press?"
The guard shook his head.
"No."
He handed Arthur a professional camera.
Arthur scrolled through the memory card.
Every photograph focused on Maya and Leo.
Not the mansion.
Not Edward.
Only the children.
The final image froze everyone in the room.
It wasn't taken today.
It was taken three days earlier.
Outside Maya's school.
Someone had been watching them...
Long before Edward found them.
Detective Mitchell slowly closed the camera.
Then spoke the words no one wanted to hear.
"This wasn't curiosity."
She looked directly at Arthur.
"Someone else knows exactly who these children are."
"And they've been following them."
The search for Maya and Leo was no longer over.
May you like
It had only entered its most dangerous chapter.
