Chapter 4

Chapter 4
Victoria's Perfect Lie
The truth is powerful.
But a well-crafted lie can travel fartherâespecially when it is backed by wealth, influence, and fear.
Victoria Hale Blackwood understood that better than anyone.
She had spent her entire adult life watching her parents rewrite reality.
If someone embarrassed the family, they became unstable.
If an employee spoke out, they became dishonest.
If a witness refused to cooperate, they simply disappeared from public view.
Now...
She intended to do the same.
At six o'clock the following morning, Victoria sat inside the penthouse apartment owned by her parents.
Her face was hidden beneath designer sunglasses despite the cloudy weather.
The faint bruise on her cheek, left by Arthur's slap, had already become part of her strategy.
Three people sat across from her.
A public relations consultant.
A criminal defense attorney.
And her mother, Evelyn Hale.
No one asked how she was feeling.
Only one question mattered.
"How do we control the story?"
Victoria removed her sunglasses.
"He assaulted me in front of his staff."
The attorney nodded.
"And the children?"
"They're the center of everything."
Victoria leaned forward.
"Then we make them the problem."
Within hours, anonymous accounts on social media began posting carefully edited stories.
Arthur Blackwood's marriage falls apart after mysterious adopted children manipulate family.
Another headline appeared.
Businessman accused of attacking wife over inheritance dispute.
Then another.
Sources claim children have a history of violent behavior.
The stories spread quickly.
None contained evidence.
Only unnamed sources.
Rumors.
Half-truths.
But Victoria knew something important.
People rarely waited for facts.
At Blackwood Manor, Benjamin Reeves placed a tablet in front of Arthur.
"You should see this."
Arthur quietly scrolled through dozens of articles.
His expression never changed.
"They're moving fast."
Benjamin nodded.
"Very."
"They're trying to win before the truth catches up."
Arthur closed the tablet.
"Let them."
Benjamin looked surprised.
"We're not responding?"
Arthur shook his head.
"No."
"We're proving."
Meanwhile...
Maya sat alone in the library.
She stared at the comments beneath one of the news articles.
Spoiled kids destroyed a marriage.
Poor Victoria.
Those children planned this for money.
She quietly closed the screen.
Arthur entered a moment later.
He immediately noticed her expression.
"You've been reading."
She nodded.
"They hate us."
Arthur sat beside her.
"They don't know you."
"They think they do."
"They've only met a story."
He gently closed the laptop.
"The people who matter know the truth."
Maya whispered,
"What if the truth isn't enough?"
Arthur looked directly at her.
"Then we keep telling it anyway."
Across town...
Detective Laura Mitchell reviewed the mansion's surveillance footage.
The recording was clear.
Victoria shouting.
Maya shielding Leo.
The slap.
The second slap.
Arthur arriving.
Everything had been captured by the hallway security camera.
Officer Daniel Cruz entered carrying another flash drive.
"We found this online."
Mitchell played it.
The footage had been edited.
The first slap was gone.
The audio had been rearranged.
It appeared as though Arthur attacked Victoria without reason.
She immediately frowned.
"That's professionally altered."
Cruz nodded.
"The upload came from an overseas server."
Mitchell smiled slightly.
"They're trying very hard."
That afternoon, Victoria held a press conference outside her parents' headquarters.
Cameras flashed endlessly.
She stood before the microphones wearing a white suit and a carefully placed bandage across her cheek.
Her voice sounded fragile.
"I never imagined my marriage would become public."
She paused, pretending to compose herself.
"I have always loved Arthur."
"But lately..."
She lowered her eyes.
"The children have become increasingly aggressive."
A reporter raised his hand.
"Are you saying they attacked you?"
Victoria nodded slowly.
"I was trying to calm everyone."
"Unfortunately..."
She touched her cheek.
"...Arthur believed them."
Dozens of cameras captured the performance.
Millions would see it before sunset.
At that very moment...
Detective Mitchell received a phone call.
"Detective."
"What is it?"
"The original surveillance server wasn't inside the mansion."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Arthur's security director answered,
"Every recording is automatically backed up to an encrypted cloud server."
Mitchell smiled.
"So even if someone edits the local copy..."
"The original still exists."
One hour later...
Arthur, Edward Sterling, Detective Mitchell, and Benjamin gathered in the estate's conference room.
The untouched recording played across a large screen.
No edits.
No missing frames.
No missing audio.
Every second was crystal clear.
Victoria could be heard saying:
"They're nobody."
Then...
The first slap.
Leo crying.
Maya stepping between her brother and Victoria.
The second assault.
Arthur arriving moments later.
Finally...
Victoria reaching toward Maya again before Arthur stopped her.
When the recording ended, silence filled the room.
Edward slowly exhaled.
"She lied about everything."
Mitchell nodded.
"And now we can prove it."
Unfortunately...
Victoria wasn't finished.
That evening, three former employees appeared on national television.
Each repeated the same story.
"The children often caused trouble."
"They disrespected Mrs. Blackwood."
"Arthur ignored their behavior."
Detective Mitchell watched the interview carefully.
Something felt wrong.
She replayed one section.
Then paused the video.
All three witnesses repeated one unusual phrase.
'Hostile domestic environment.'
Exactly the same wording.
Exactly the same order.
She smiled.
"They memorized a script."
The following morning...
One of Blackwood Manor's housemaids quietly arrived at the police station.
Her name was Rosa Delgado.
She looked terrified.
Detective Mitchell offered her a cup of coffee.
"You wanted to talk?"
Rosa nodded.
"They're paying people."
Mitchell remained silent.
"So they won't tell the truth."
"Who?"
"Mrs. Hale."
"Victoria's mother."
Rosa removed an envelope from her purse.
Inside were photographs.
Bank transfer receipts.
And a handwritten list of names.
Every employee willing to lie had already received money.
Mitchell looked up.
"Why bring this to us?"
Rosa's hands trembled.
"Because I watched those children grow up."
"They're good kids."
"I won't let anyone destroy them."
News of Rosa's testimony spread quickly.
Several employees immediately withdrew their public statements.
One even admitted receiving money in exchange for lying.
Victoria's carefully constructed story began to crack.
Still...
She refused to surrender.
Late that night, she met privately with her mother.
Evelyn poured herself a glass of wine.
"The servants are becoming unreliable."
Victoria crossed her arms.
"What now?"
Her mother smiled coldly.
"Then we remove the strongest witness."
Victoria frowned.
"You mean Arthur?"
"No."
Evelyn opened a folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Rosa Delgado.
The maid who had come forward.
Victoria looked up slowly.
"What are you planning?"
Evelyn's smile never reached her eyes.
"By tomorrow morning..."
"She'll remember exactly who she works for."
Outside the restaurant, hidden across the street, Detective Mitchell lowered a surveillance camera.
Every word had been recorded.
She looked at Officer Cruz.
"They're escalating."
Cruz nodded.
"What do we do?"
Mitchell slipped the recording into an evidence bag.
"We protect Rosa."
"And we start treating this case as something much bigger than domestic assault."
Because for the first time...
The investigation wasn't just about two children.
It was about a powerful family willing to manufacture lies, bribe witnesses, and intimidate anyone who stood in their way.
May you like
And Detective Laura Mitchell had no intention of letting them succeed.
