Chapter 5

The Missing Maid

The easiest witness to silence...

Was the one no one could find.

By sunrise, Detective Laura Mitchell already knew something was wrong.

Rosa Delgado had never missed work.

Never ignored a phone call.

Never failed to check in with her younger sister before leaving for the day.

Yet that morning...

She had vanished.

At 7:12 a.m., Rosa's sister, Elena, walked into the Napa County Sheriff's Office with tears in her eyes.

"I can't reach her."

Detective Mitchell looked up from her desk.

"When did you last speak to her?"

"Last night."

"What did she say?"

Elena hesitated.

"She sounded scared."

"Scared of what?"

"She said if anything happened to her..."

"...I should tell the police to look at the Hales."

The room fell silent.

Mitchell immediately stood.

"Officer Cruz."

"Yes, Detective?"

"Get a warrant."

"We're searching Rosa's apartment."

Thirty minutes later...

The small apartment looked untouched.

No signs of forced entry.

No broken furniture.

No blood.

But something felt wrong.

Officer Cruz pointed toward the kitchen table.

"A cup of coffee."

Still warm.

Mitchell frowned.

"She left in a hurry."

A chair had been pushed back abruptly.

One shoe remained near the front door.

Rosa would never leave wearing only one shoe.

Someone had interrupted her morning.

The forensic team dusted every surface.

A partial fingerprint appeared on the outside of the kitchen window.

It belonged to neither Rosa nor her sister.

Mitchell stared at it.

"Someone was watching."

Officer Cruz nodded.

"Or waiting."

Across town...

Arthur sat with Maya and Leo in the breakfast room.

Neither child had much appetite.

The previous days had changed everything.

News reporters crowded the estate entrance.

Security had doubled.

Even the gardens no longer felt peaceful.

Maya quietly looked at Arthur.

"Is this because of us?"

Arthur immediately shook his head.

"No."

"It's because some adults are afraid of the truth."

Leo frowned.

"Will they hurt Rosa?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't know.

Edward Sterling entered carrying his phone.

His expression was unusually serious.

"I just spoke with Detective Mitchell."

Arthur looked up.

"Rosa?"

"Missing."

The room fell silent.

Maya slowly lowered her spoon.

"She helped us."

Edward nodded.

"And now someone wants to make sure she can't."

Meanwhile...

Victoria paced inside her parents' penthouse.

She had seen the news.

Every witness she paid was beginning to disappear from television.

Several had already admitted accepting money.

Her perfect story was collapsing.

She turned toward her mother.

"Did you have something to do with Rosa?"

Evelyn calmly stirred her tea.

"You ask too many questions."

"Mother."

Evelyn looked up.

"If you want to survive this..."

"Learn when not to ask."

Victoria felt a chill.

For the first time...

She wasn't sure she wanted the answer.

Detective Mitchell returned to the sheriff's office just before noon.

A patrol officer hurried toward her.

"We found Rosa's car."

"Where?"

"Abandoned outside Calistoga."

Mitchell grabbed her jacket.

"Let's go."

The vehicle sat alone beside a quiet vineyard road.

Its doors were locked.

The keys remained in the ignition.

Rosa's purse lay on the passenger seat.

Nothing appeared stolen.

Officer Cruz examined the ground nearby.

"Tire tracks."

Mitchell knelt beside him.

"Two vehicles."

"One belongs to Rosa."

"The other..."

"A black SUV."

The same type of vehicle frequently used by the Hale family security company.

Back at the crime lab...

Forensic analysts recovered something unexpected.

A strand of long blonde hair inside Rosa's car.

Mitchell frowned.

"Rosa has black hair."

The technician nodded.

"This belongs to someone else."

DNA testing was immediately requested.

Late that afternoon...

Arthur received another unexpected visitor.

A middle-aged man wearing an old sheriff's badge.

"My name is Thomas Reed."

"I retired ten years ago."

Arthur invited him inside.

"I think I know why Rosa disappeared."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"I'm listening."

Reed slowly removed an old notebook.

"I investigated the Sterling explosion fifteen years ago."

Edward looked sharply toward him.

"You were on the case?"

"I was."

"What happened?"

Reed sighed deeply.

"I was ordered to stop asking questions."

He opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten names.

Detectives.

Lawyers.

Judges.

Business executives.

One name was circled several times.

Richard Hale.

Victoria's father.

Edward stared at the page.

"Richard?"

Reed nodded.

"He wasn't officially connected."

"But every time evidence disappeared..."

"Someone linked to Richard Hale appeared nearby."

Arthur exchanged a glance with Edward.

The room suddenly felt much colder.

That evening...

Detective Mitchell received the DNA results.

The blonde hair belonged to...

Victoria Hale.

Mitchell frowned.

"Impossible."

Officer Cruz looked confused.

"She said she hadn't left the penthouse all morning."

Mitchell leaned back.

"Then either she's lying..."

"...or someone wants us to think she is."

Just before midnight...

A call finally came.

An unknown number.

Mitchell answered immediately.

"Detective Mitchell."

Heavy breathing.

Then a frightened whisper.

"It's Rosa."

Mitchell stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

"Where are you?"

"I don't know."

"I escaped."

"Are you hurt?"

"They're looking for me."

"Who?"

Rosa began crying.

"I heard them talking."

"What did they say?"

"They kept mentioning..."

She struggled to breathe.

"...the fire."

Mitchell froze.

"What fire?"

"The one fifteen years ago."

Another pause.

"They said..."

"...the children were never supposed to survive."

The line suddenly went dead.

Mitchell stared at the silent phone.

Officer Cruz rushed into her office.

"What happened?"

Mitchell slowly lowered the receiver.

"This case was never about one slap."

She looked toward the evidence board covered with photographs.

Arthur.

Victoria.

Edward.

Maya.

Leo.

Richard Hale.

Someone had tried to kill two children fifteen years ago.

And someone was willing to kidnap an innocent maid to keep that secret buried.

Outside the sheriff's office...

A woman watched through binoculars from inside a parked black sedan.

She calmly lowered the phone she had just used to jam Rosa's call.

Then she smiled.

Because Detective Mitchell had just heard exactly what she was supposed to hear.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

The game had entered a far more dangerous stage.

And neither side realized...

May you like

There was someone else moving the pieces from the shadows.
