Chapter 12

The Final Hunt

A cornered predator is the most dangerous.

Richard Hale had lost his company.

His fortune was frozen.

His allies were disappearing.

His carefully constructed public image had collapsed in less than forty-eight hours.

Yet Detective Laura Mitchell knew one thing better than anyone else.

Richard Hale was still free.

And as long as he remained free...

No one connected to the case was truly safe.

The private jet's engines began to roar.

Pilots prepared for takeoff.

Inside the cabin, Richard remained perfectly calm despite the federal helicopters racing toward the runway.

His lawyer looked terrified.

"They're almost here!"

Richard glanced at his watch.

"Three minutes."

"Three minutes until what?"

"You'll see."

The jet suddenly accelerated.

But instead of turning toward the runway...

It veered sharply into a nearby maintenance hangar.

The massive hangar doors slid shut behind it.

By the time the FBI helicopters landed outside, the aircraft had disappeared.

Agent Rebecca Collins stared in disbelief.

"What the..."

The hangar was empty.

No jet.

No passengers.

Only an abandoned fuel truck.

Detective Mitchell arrived moments later.

She walked slowly across the concrete floor.

Then she noticed something unusual.

Fresh tire marks.

Not from an airplane.

From heavy trucks.

"They switched vehicles."

Collins nodded.

"And they planned this long ago."

Miles away...

A convoy of three identical black transport trucks traveled north on Interstate 5.

Only one carried Richard Hale.

The other two were decoys.

Each followed a different route after crossing Sacramento.

State police helicopters struggled to keep track.

Richard watched the highway through a narrow armored window.

He smiled faintly.

"They're chasing ghosts."

At Blackwood Manor...

Arthur refused to leave the children.

Federal agents had increased security around the estate, but he still checked every door himself before sunrise.

Maya entered the kitchen quietly.

"You didn't sleep."

Arthur smiled.

"Neither did you."

She sat beside him.

"I keep hearing those doors."

"The bunker?"

She nodded.

Arthur gently squeezed her hand.

"Those memories won't disappear overnight."

"Will they ever?"

He looked out the window.

"They'll become quieter."

"But they won't control your life."

Maya leaned against his shoulder.

For the first time in weeks...

She believed healing was possible.

Meanwhile...

Edward Sterling met privately with Detective Mitchell.

"I've been thinking."

Mitchell looked up from the evidence board.

"About Richard?"

"No."

"About Daniel."

"My son."

He placed an old leather journal on the table.

"I found this while cleaning my study."

Mitchell carefully opened it.

Most pages contained business notes.

Then one entry stopped her cold.

If anything happens to us... trust Eleanor Grant.

She frowned.

"Who's Eleanor Grant?"

Edward looked uncertain.

"My son's college friend."

"I haven't spoken to her in years."

Officer Cruz quickly searched the FBI database.

His eyes widened.

"Eleanor Grant isn't just anyone."

"What is she?"

"She's a retired federal prosecutor."

Within hours...

Mitchell and Cruz arrived at a quiet lakeside cabin.

An elderly woman answered the door.

Before Mitchell could introduce herself, Eleanor sighed.

"I wondered how long it would take."

"You knew we'd come?"

"I've been expecting someone for fifteen years."

She invited them inside.

The cabin walls were covered with newspaper clippings.

Photographs.

Court filings.

Maps.

Eleanor had never stopped investigating.

"I warned Daniel not to trust Richard Hale."

Mitchell leaned forward.

"Why?"

"Because Richard wasn't the man giving orders."

The room became silent.

"What do you mean?"

Eleanor removed a faded photograph from a locked drawer.

It showed Richard standing beside an older man.

A man no one in the investigation had mentioned before.

She placed the photograph on the table.

"This..."

"...is Charles Beaumont."

Mitchell frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

"Exactly."

"He made sure of that."

Eleanor explained that decades earlier, Beaumont had quietly financed dozens of businesses through hidden investment companies.

Richard Hale had been one of his protégés.

"He taught Richard how to hide money."

"How to influence politicians."

"How to erase evidence."

Officer Cruz looked stunned.

"So Richard wasn't the architect."

"He was the student."

Mitchell stared at the photograph.

"Is Beaumont still alive?"

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"As far as I know."

"And if he is..."

"He's far more dangerous than Richard."

Back on the highway...

Richard's convoy suddenly split into three different directions.

Police followed two of them.

The third disappeared onto an abandoned logging road.

Exactly as Richard intended.

He leaned back.

"We've bought enough time."

His security chief frowned.

"For what?"

Richard answered calmly.

"Project Legacy."

At FBI headquarters...

Cyber analysts finally decrypted another hidden file recovered from the bunker.

The screen displayed a map of Northern California.

Several locations blinked red.

One location flashed continuously.

Mitchell's phone rang.

The analyst spoke urgently.

"We know what Project Legacy is."

"What?"

"It isn't money."

"It isn't another company."

"It's a data vault."

Mitchell's expression changed instantly.

"What kind of data?"

"Every crime."

"Every payment."

"Every politician."

"Every judge."

"Everything Richard ever collected to protect himself."

Officer Cruz looked over her shoulder.

"If Richard reaches that vault..."

"He'll destroy it."

Mitchell nodded.

"And we'll lose the strongest evidence we have."

She immediately contacted every federal agency involved.

Roadblocks were expanded.

Helicopters redirected.

Drones launched.

The hunt entered its final stage.

Meanwhile...

Victoria sat inside a federal safe house.

She had watched the news all day.

Everything her father built was collapsing.

Yet she couldn't stop thinking about one question.

Why had he ordered her killed?

A federal psychologist entered quietly.

"You haven't eaten."

Victoria looked up.

"I wasn't his daughter."

The psychologist remained silent.

"I was an investment."

Tears finally rolled down her face.

"And when I stopped being useful..."

"He threw me away."

For the first time in years...

Victoria cried not because she had lost power.

But because she realized she had never truly had a family.

As night fell...

Richard's truck arrived at an abandoned hydroelectric station hidden deep in the mountains.

He stepped out slowly.

Behind the rusted turbines stood a reinforced steel door built into solid rock.

His security chief entered a numeric code.

The door slid open.

Inside...

Rows upon rows of encrypted servers hummed quietly.

Richard smiled.

"The future."

He walked toward the central console.

One command would erase every file forever.

No evidence.

No witnesses.

No convictions.

Only silence.

He rested his finger above the confirmation key.

Then...

Every monitor in the room suddenly went black.

A calm female voice echoed through the chamber.

"Looking for this, Richard?"

He froze.

The screens flickered back to life.

Detective Laura Mitchell appeared on every monitor.

Behind her stood FBI agents.

And beside her...

Victoria.

Richard's expression hardened.

"You."

Victoria met his eyes through the screen.

"I'm done protecting monsters."

Mitchell smiled.

"You taught everyone to expect a trap."

"You forgot we could learn."

The reinforced door behind Richard suddenly slammed shut.

Heavy steel bolts locked into place.

His security chief rushed toward the control panel.

Nothing responded.

Outside...

FBI tactical teams silently surrounded the entire hydroelectric station.

Richard Hale looked around the sealed control room.

For the first time in his life...

There was nowhere left to run.

The final hunt...

May you like

Had become the final trap.
