Chapter 8

Kidnapped

Every parent has the same nightmare.

You turn away for one second.

When you look back...

Your child is gone.

Arthur Blackwood had prepared for almost every threat.

Additional guards.

Armored vehicles.

Encrypted communication.

A secure perimeter around Blackwood Manor.

He believed the estate was the safest place Maya and Leo could be.

He was wrong.

Monday morning arrived with unusual calm.

The previous night's storm had washed the sky clear.

Maya sat in the sunroom, finishing an online history lesson while Leo built a model airplane beside her.

For the first time in days, the children laughed.

Arthur watched from the hallway.

That sound reminded him why he refused to surrender.

Edward Sterling entered carrying breakfast.

"They're smiling again."

Arthur nodded.

"I'd forgotten how much I missed hearing it."

Neither man noticed the white delivery van slowing outside the front gate.

The driver wore the uniform of a well-known grocery supplier.

The security guards checked the delivery manifest.

Everything appeared normal.

Fresh produce.

Kitchen supplies.

Cleaning products.

The gate opened.

The van rolled slowly toward the service entrance.

Inside...

Four men sat silently behind stacked boxes.

None wore uniforms.

Twenty minutes later...

The estate's power flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every surveillance monitor went black.

The emergency generator failed to activate.

Head of Security Marcus Hale reached for his radio.

"Control, report."

Only static answered.

His instincts screamed.

"This wasn't a power failure."

He drew his weapon.

"Lock down the estate!"

Arthur heard the alarm a second later.

Every hallway door automatically sealed.

Red emergency lights flashed throughout the mansion.

"Maya!"

He sprinted toward the sunroom.

The room was empty.

A half-finished homework assignment remained on the table.

Leo's model airplane lay broken on the floor.

The back garden doors stood open.

Arthur's heart stopped.

Outside...

One security guard lay unconscious near the rose garden.

Another struggled to stand.

Marcus knelt beside him.

"What happened?"

"There were..."

The guard coughed.

"...too many."

"They used smoke grenades."

Marcus immediately spoke into his radio.

"Code Black."

"Children missing."

The words echoed through every security channel.

Arthur burst into the garden.

"Maya!"

"Leo!"

Only silence answered.

Then he saw it.

A tiny silver bracelet lying beside the stone pathway.

Maya's bracelet.

The one Edward had recognized from the old family photograph.

Arthur picked it up with shaking hands.

"No..."

Miles away...

Detective Laura Mitchell's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"Mitchell."

Officer Cruz's voice came through breathlessly.

"The children have been taken."

She was already running toward her car.

"Notify the FBI."

"Activate every highway camera."

"No one leaves Northern California without us knowing."

Within thirty minutes...

Blackwood Manor had transformed into a command center.

State police.

FBI agents.

Local detectives.

Private security specialists hired by Edward Sterling.

Maps covered the conference room walls.

Every possible escape route had been marked.

Arthur stood silently at the center of it all.

He blamed himself.

Edward placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We'll bring them home."

Arthur's voice was barely audible.

"I promised they'd always be safe."

"You didn't fail them."

Arthur looked toward the empty garden.

"It feels like I did."

Meanwhile...

Inside a moving cargo truck...

Maya slowly opened her eyes.

Her wrists were bound with plastic restraints.

Leo sat beside her.

Terrified.

But unharmed.

"Maya..."

She immediately leaned closer.

"It's okay."

"No."

"It isn't."

She forced herself to stay calm.

"Listen to me."

"They want us scared."

"We're not giving them that."

Leo nodded through tears.

The truck hit a sharp bump.

One of the masked men laughed.

"The little princess is awake."

Another replied,

"Boss said no injuries."

"Not yet."

Maya quietly memorized every voice.

Every turn.

Every sound.

Arthur had once taught her something important.

If you can't fight... observe.

She counted silently.

Left turn.

Railroad crossing.

Bridge.

Twenty-three minutes.

The smell of seawater disappeared.

The air became cooler.

Higher elevation.

She stored every detail in her memory.

Back at the command center...

Officer Cruz rushed toward Detective Mitchell.

"We found something."

He displayed traffic-camera footage.

The delivery van leaving the estate.

Only it wasn't white anymore.

A portable paint wrap had changed its color to dark blue in less than five minutes.

Mitchell frowned.

"Professional."

Cruz nodded.

"But they missed one camera."

He enlarged the rear window.

A small handprint.

Maya's.

Mitchell smiled.

"She knows we're looking."

Inside the truck...

Leo whispered,

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"What if Dad can't find us?"

Maya looked directly into his eyes.

"He will."

"How do you know?"

"Because he always has."

She glanced toward a loose metal bolt sticking out from the truck floor.

Slowly...

Carefully...

She rubbed the plastic restraint against it.

One movement at a time.

At FBI headquarters...

Special Agent Rebecca Collins arrived with urgent news.

"We identified the fake delivery company."

Mitchell looked up.

"Who owns it?"

"A shell corporation."

"Registered last month."

She placed another document on the table.

The listed attorney.

Martin Keller.

Arthur frowned.

"The lawyer who died?"

Collins nodded.

"Someone has been using his identity for years."

Another ghost from Richard Hale's past.

Edward's private security chief suddenly entered carrying a laptop.

"Sir."

"We intercepted a message."

Everyone gathered around.

A video began playing.

Maya and Leo sat side by side inside a dimly lit room.

Neither appeared injured.

A distorted voice spoke.

"They're alive."

"For now."

Arthur stepped closer to the screen.

"What do you want?"

The voice laughed softly.

"You'll find out."

The video ended.

Only five seconds long.

Just enough to prove the children were still alive.

Just enough to create panic.

Detective Mitchell replayed the footage repeatedly.

Then she paused.

Officer Cruz looked confused.

"What?"

"The background."

A faded mural painted on a concrete wall.

Blue mountains.

A red train.

Half a sun.

Arthur frowned.

"It looks familiar."

Edward suddenly stood.

"I know where that is."

Everyone looked at him.

"Fifteen years ago..."

"My company funded renovations at an abandoned children's camp in the Sierra foothills."

"The mural was painted inside the recreation hall."

Mitchell's eyes widened.

"The camp still exists?"

Edward nodded slowly.

"Abandoned."

"But isolated."

Arthur was already reaching for his jacket.

"We're going."

Mitchell stopped him.

"You won't."

Arthur glared at her.

"They're my children."

"And that's exactly why you stay here."

She met his eyes.

"If this is a trap..."

"They're expecting you."

Arthur clenched his fists.

Every instinct demanded he go.

Every rational thought told him Mitchell was right.

Several hours later...

A tactical FBI team silently surrounded the abandoned camp.

Night had fallen.

The old buildings stood dark beneath towering pine trees.

Agent Collins whispered into her radio.

"Target in sight."

Mitchell nodded.

"Move."

SWAT officers stormed the recreation hall.

Flashlights cut through the darkness.

Empty.

No children.

Only an old television.

Still playing the same five-second video on an endless loop.

Arthur's hope collapsed.

"They were never here."

Mitchell searched the room.

Then she noticed something scratched into the dusty wooden floor.

Three words.

Written by a child.

LOOK BELOW STAIRS

Her heart raced.

Officers rushed toward the basement entrance.

The heavy steel door stood slightly open.

They descended carefully.

The basement was empty.

No children.

No kidnappers.

Only a backpack.

Leo's backpack.

Inside were his favorite toy airplane...

And a folded piece of notebook paper.

Mitchell carefully unfolded it.

The handwriting belonged to Maya.

They moved us.

The man with the dragon tattoo said Richard wants us alive.

We crossed a river after sunset.

Please tell Dad we didn't stop fighting.

Arthur closed his eyes.

His hands trembled as he held the note.

She hadn't written goodbye.

She had written directions.

Miles away...

Inside another moving vehicle...

The tattooed man looked at Maya with growing irritation.

"You've been quiet."

Maya smiled faintly.

"My father is coming."

The man laughed.

"He'll never find you."

Maya looked out the small window.

She had quietly dropped another clue minutes earlier.

One tiny silver charm from her bracelet.

She met the man's eyes again.

"You don't know my father."

The man's smile slowly disappeared.

Because despite everything...

The girl in front of him wasn't acting like a frightened hostage.

She was acting like someone absolutely certain she would be rescued.

And somehow...

May you like

That certainty unsettled him.
