CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN BENEATH HIS HOUSE

CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN BENEATH HIS HOUSE

The first thing Dominic Vale noticed was the silence.

Not the kind of silence that came after midnight when his estate settled into darkness.

Not the peaceful silence of a house finally resting.

This silence was different.

It was the silence of people holding their breath.

The kind that appeared when everyone knew something terrible had happened, but nobody was brave enough to say it aloud.

Dominic stood inside the underground wine cellar, staring at the woman lying on the cold stone floor.

Mia Carter.

The maid who had worked in his home for three years.

The woman who had quietly served his family.

The woman everyone ignored.

The woman nobody thought would matter.

Until now.

Her breathing was weak.

Too weak.

Dominic had seen injured men before.

He had seen enemies dragged from burning cars.

He had seen people survive wounds that should have killed them.

But seeing Mia like this was different.

Because she was not a soldier.

She was not part of his world.

She was a mother.

And upstairs, a four-year-old girl was waiting for her to come home.

Dominic removed his coat and wrapped it around Mia’s shoulders.

“Mia.”

Her eyelids moved slightly.

For a moment, she looked terrified.

Then she recognized him.

Her lips moved.

“Harper
”

The first word she said was not about herself.

Not about the pain.

Not about the person who hurt her.

Her daughter.

Dominic felt something tighten inside his chest.

“She’s safe.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Promise?”

Dominic looked at her.

For years, people had begged him for mercy.

Begged him for protection.

Begged him to keep promises.

But nobody had ever made him feel the weight of one like this.

“I promise.”

Only then did Mia close her eyes.

The ambulance arrived seven minutes later.

Seven minutes.

Dominic counted every second.

He hated waiting.

Waiting meant losing control.

And Dominic Vale had built his entire life around control.

Control over his business.

Control over his enemies.

Control over every possible threat.

But tonight, inside his own house, he had discovered something terrifying.

There were things he could not control.

Like a little girl crying for her mother.

Like a woman dying beneath his floor.

Like betrayal.

The mansion was locked down before Mia reached the hospital.

Every gate closed.

Every vehicle searched.

Every employee questioned.

Nobody entered.

Nobody left.

Dominic stood in the security room watching cameras covering every corner of his estate.

His security chief Daniel Mercer stood beside him.

“Nothing unusual before tonight.”

Dominic looked at the screens.

“Nothing unusual is why I’m worried.”

Daniel understood.

A normal enemy was easy.

A stranger.

A rival.

A person with a clear motive.

But this?

This happened inside Dominic’s home.

Someone knew the hidden staircase.

Someone knew the basement existed.

Someone knew nobody checked that area.

Someone had planned carefully.

“How long was she down there?” Daniel asked.

Dominic’s expression darkened.

“Three days.”

Silence.

Three days.

A human being trapped underground.

Three days without knowing if anyone would find her.

Three days while a child waited upstairs.

Dominic looked at the camera showing Harper sitting outside the hospital room.

Small.

Alone.

Holding her mother’s silver bird necklace.

“She was right.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Who?”

“Harper.”

Dominic’s voice lowered.

“Everyone ignored her.”

A few hours later, Nathan Cross arrived.

Dominic saw him before Nathan spoke.

That was the problem with knowing someone for seventeen years.

You noticed things.

Small things.

The way they walked.

The way they looked around.

The way they avoided certain questions.

Nathan entered the security room calmly.

Too calmly.

“Dom.”

Dominic did not turn around.

“Nathan.”

The old friendship between them usually filled the room.

Tonight, it did not.

Nathan looked toward the cameras.

“Mia survived?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“That’s good.”

Dominic finally looked at him.

“Is it?”

Nathan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Dominic studied him.

The man who had saved his life.

The man who had stood beside him through every war.

The man who knew every weakness Dominic had.

“Who put the lock on the basement?”

Nathan’s face barely changed.

Barely.

But Dominic noticed.

“Claire.”

A simple answer.

Too simple.

“Claire?”

“She was worried about the wine collection.”

Dominic walked closer.

“You expect me to believe my fiancĂ©e locked a door under my house because she was worried about wine?”

Nathan sighed.

“Dom.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Talk to me like I’m still the man who trusts without asking questions.”

Nathan went silent.

That was when Dominic knew.

Something had changed.

Claire Bennett arrived twenty minutes later.

Perfect.

As always.

Her blonde hair was untouched.

Her expensive dress flawless.

Her expression carefully arranged.

She looked exactly like the woman Dominic planned to marry.

And suddenly, that bothered him.

Because everything about Claire was perfect.

Too perfect.

“Dominic.”

She rushed toward him.

“I heard about Mia.”

He stepped back slightly.

“You knew she was missing.”

Claire froze.

Only for a second.

But again

he noticed.

“I thought she went to visit family.”

Dominic stared.

“Mia doesn’t have family in Pennsylvania.”

Claire’s face changed.

A small crack.

A small mistake.

But enough.

“Who told you that?”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“You told Harper.”

Silence.

Claire looked toward the stairs.

Where Harper stood.

Watching.

Listening.

The little girl who had already discovered more truth than every adult around her.

“Harper misunderstood.”

“No.”

Dominic’s voice was quiet.

“She didn’t.”

The next morning, Mia woke up.

Dominic was there.

He did not know why.

He had meetings.

A company to run.

Problems waiting.

But he stayed.

Maybe because for the first time in years, something mattered more than business.

Maybe because he remembered Harper’s face.

Maybe because he needed answers.

Mia opened her eyes.

“Where is Harper?”

Dominic immediately answered.

“Outside.”

Relief crossed her face.

Then fear returned.

“You shouldn’t have found me.”

Dominic became still.

“What?”

Mia looked away.

“I didn’t want you involved.”

Dominic leaned forward.

“Mia.”

Her eyes met his.

“Someone took you from my house.”

A pause.

“They used a room inside my property.”

Another pause.

“They lied to a child under my protection.”

His voice hardened.

“You are already involving me.”

Mia looked down.

“I know what they can do.”

“Who?”

She said nothing.

“Mia.”

Still nothing.

Dominic’s patience disappeared.

“Who?”

Finally, she whispered:

“People who don’t forgive.”

Dominic watched her carefully.

“You know who did this.”

Mia’s silence answered.

“Tell me.”

“I can’t.”

“Can’t?”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Won’t.”

That surprised him.

Because fear was something Dominic understood.

But this was not fear for herself.

It was fear for someone else.

“Who are you protecting?”

Mia looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“Harper.”

That afternoon, Dominic returned to the basement.

Alone.

He wanted to see the place again.

The room where someone thought they could hide a person under his roof.

The room where Mia suffered while everyone searched in the wrong direction.

He walked slowly through the cellar.

Then he noticed something.

A loose stone behind the wine rack.

He moved it.

Behind it was a small metal box.

Old.

Hidden.

Waiting.

Inside was a flash drive.

And one photograph.

Dominic picked up the photograph.

His blood ran cold.

It showed Mia.

Years earlier.

Before she worked at his mansion.

Standing beside a man Dominic knew.

A man who had been dead for ten years.

His father.

Dominic stared at the image.

Impossible.

Mia Carter was not just a maid.

She had a connection to his family.

A connection she had hidden.

The flash drive contained one file.

One video.

Dominic pressed play.

The screen flickered.

Then his father appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Serious.

A man Dominic had buried years ago.

The video lasted only thirty seconds.

But those thirty seconds changed everything.

His father looked directly into the camera.

And said:

“If Dominic ever finds this
”

A pause.

“He must never trust the people closest to him.”

The video ended.

Dominic stood alone in the basement.

The same basement where Mia was almost killed.

The same basement where his entire world had shifted.

He finally understood.

Mia had not been kidnapped because she was weak.

She had been kidnapped because she knew something.

Something his father had hidden.

Something powerful enough to make someone risk everything.

Including killing a woman inside Dominic Vale’s own house.

Upstairs, Harper was waiting.

A child who lost her mother for three days.

A child who nobody believed.

A child who had been right from the beginning.

Dominic looked at the stairs.

Then at the hidden file in his hand.

For the first time in years

he felt afraid.

Not for himself.

For the people he loved.

Because whoever was behind this was not trying to destroy Dominic Vale.

They were trying to destroy everything he had left.

And the worst part?

The enemy was not outside his walls.

May you like

The enemy had been invited inside.
