CHAPTER 6: THE CHILD WHO SAW EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 6: THE CHILD WHO SAW EVERYTHING

Dominic Vale had faced men who wanted him dead.

He had faced enemies with guns.

He had faced betrayals that cost millions.

He had watched powerful people collapse under pressure.

But nothing prepared him for the fear in a child’s eyes.

Because adults could lie.

Adults could manipulate.

Adults could hide behind money and power.

But children remembered.

Children noticed.

Children saw what everyone else ignored.

And Harper Carter had seen everything.

Dominic returned to the estate faster than he had ever driven.

The gates opened before his car reached them.

Security guards moved immediately.

Everyone knew something was wrong.

Not because Dominic shouted.

Not because he gave orders.

Because he was silent.

A silent Dominic Vale was more dangerous than an angry one.

He found Harper in the library.

The same room where his father’s old books remained untouched.

The little girl sat on the carpet surrounded by drawings.

Mia was beside her.

The moment Harper saw Dominic, she ran.

“Mr. Vale!”

Dominic lowered himself.

“What happened?”

Harper looked toward the bookshelf.

Then back at him.

“I found Daddy’s secret room.”

Dominic felt a strange chill.

“Daddy?”

Harper nodded.

“My grandpa’s room.”

Dominic glanced at Mia.

She looked just as surprised.

“She told me she found a hidden door,” Mia explained.

“When?”

“Today.”

Dominic looked at Harper.

“Show me.”

The child walked through the library.

Past shelves.

Past old paintings.

Past history.

Dominic followed.

He knew every room in this mansion.

Or at least he thought he did.

Harper stopped beside an old bookshelf.

She touched a small wooden carving.

A bird.

The same bird on Mia’s necklace.

Dominic noticed.

“You know that symbol?”

Harper shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why did you touch it?”

“Because Mommy said it was important.”

Dominic looked at Mia.

Mia became pale.

“What?”

“I never told her that.”

The bookshelf moved.

Slowly.

Silently.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Dominic stared.

Another hidden room.

Another secret.

Another lie.

The mansion was beginning to feel less like a home.

And more like a grave full of forgotten truths.

Dominic entered first.

Daniel followed.

Mia carried Harper.

The room smelled old.

Dust.

Paper.

Time.

A desk sat in the center.

A chair.

A locked cabinet.

And on the wall

photographs.

Dominic stopped.

Because every photograph showed the same people.

His father.

Nathan.

Claire’s mother.

And Mia.

Mia stepped back.

“No.”

Dominic looked at her.

“You knew about this room.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

Her voice became quiet.

“Because I thought nobody knew.”

Dominic walked toward the photographs.

There were dates.

Years before Mia worked at the estate.

Years before anyone knew her.

“How old were you?”

Mia swallowed.

“Twenty-one.”

“You knew my father when you were twenty-one?”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“I couldn’t.”

Dominic turned.

“Why?”

Mia looked at Harper.

“Because I was protecting her.”

Dominic hated that answer.

Not because it was false.

Because everyone used it.

Protecting you.

Protecting her.

Protecting the family.

Everyone kept secrets in the name of love.

And somehow, those secrets caused more damage than the truth ever could.

Daniel opened the cabinet.

Inside were files.

Hundreds of pages.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Names.

Dominic picked up the first folder.

The title made his stomach tighten.

VALE LEGACY PROJECT

He opened it.

The first page contained information about his family.

Not business.

Blood.

His father had created a private organization.

A group that existed before Dominic was born.

A group that controlled information.

Influence.

People.

Dominic read silently.

Then stopped.

“What?”

Daniel asked.

Dominic looked up.

“The members.”

“Who?”

Dominic handed him the page.

Daniel read.

His face changed.

Because the names were people they knew.

Politicians.

Business leaders.

Security officials.

And one name that made Dominic’s hand tighten.

Nathan Cross.

“He was part of it.”

Mia whispered.

Dominic looked at her.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“Since when?”

“Since the beginning.”

A pause.

“Since your father told me.”

Dominic turned away.

Because he was tired.

Tired of discovering pieces of his own life from other people.

Then Harper spoke.

A small voice.

“Mr. Vale?”

Dominic looked at her.

“Yes?”

“Can I tell you something?”

He nodded.

“What?”

“I saw the bad lady.”

The room froze.

Mia immediately moved closer.

“Harper.”

“No, Mommy.”

The child looked at Dominic.

“I saw her.”

“Who?”

Harper pointed at the photograph.

At Claire’s mother.

Dominic frowned.

“That’s not possible.”

Harper shook her head.

“She came to the house.”

“When?”

“Before Mommy disappeared.”

Everyone became silent.

Dominic crouched.

“Harper, are you sure?”

She nodded.

“She was angry.”

“What did she say?”

Harper looked down.

“She said
”

The child’s voice became smaller.

“‘Your mommy knows where it is.’”

Dominic felt his blood run cold.

“Where what is?”

Harper shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“But Mommy was scared.”

Dominic looked at Mia.

“What did she know?”

Mia closed her eyes.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“Something your father hid.”

“Again.”

His voice became sharp.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Mia looked at him.

“Because everyone was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Mia answered:

“The truth about how the Vale empire began.”

Before Dominic could respond, the lights went out.

The entire mansion fell into darkness.

Security alarms activated.

Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.

“Movement outside.”

Dominic looked toward the hallway.

“How many?”

Daniel checked his device.

“Too many.”

The first gunshot shattered the silence.

Not inside.

Outside.

Someone was attacking the estate.

Dominic immediately moved.

“Secure Harper.”

Mia grabbed her daughter.

But Harper grabbed Dominic’s hand.

“Don’t go.”

The words stopped him.

Because they were not from a frightened child.

They were from someone who had already lost someone once.

Dominic looked at her.

“I have to.”

“Everyone leaves.”

Her voice trembled.

“Everyone leaves.”

For a moment, Dominic saw himself in her.

The child who learned too early that people disappear.

He knelt.

“I’m coming back.”

Harper stared.

“Promise?”

Dominic remembered Mia.

The basement.

The fear.

The promises people broke.

He answered carefully.

“Yes.”

The attack lasted eleven minutes.

Eleven minutes of chaos.

Glass breaking.

Security teams moving.

Unknown attackers surrounding the property.

But Dominic’s men were prepared.

The attackers retreated.

Leaving only one thing behind.

A message.

A white envelope placed at the front gate.

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Harper.

Taken earlier that day.

Outside the library.

Watching the hidden room.

On the back was a sentence.

“The child saw everything.”

A second line.

“Now she has to disappear.”

Dominic’s entire body went cold.

Because this was no longer about secrets.

No longer about the empire.

No longer about revenge.

They had crossed the one line Dominic Vale would never forgive.

They threatened a child.

He turned toward the mansion.

Toward Mia.

Toward Harper.

And something inside him changed.

The businessman disappeared.

The strategist disappeared.

The feared mafia boss returned.

“Daniel.”

“Yes, boss?”

“Find every person connected to this attack.”

Daniel nodded.

“And when you find them?”

Dominic looked at the photograph.

His voice became almost calm.

“Bring them to me.”

That night, Dominic stayed beside Harper’s room.

He did not trust guards.

He did not trust cameras.

He did not trust anyone.

Because the person who betrayed him had once been someone he called family.

At 4:00 a.m., his phone received another message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

“Ask Mia who Harper’s father really is.”

Dominic stared at the message.

Slowly

he looked toward the room where Mia and Harper slept.

Because suddenly there was another secret.

Another question.

Another truth buried beneath his house.

And this time

the secret was not about his empire.

May you like

It was about the little girl he had promised to protect.
