CHAPTER 11: THE SECRET GRAVEYARD

CHAPTER 11: THE SECRET GRAVEYARD

Dominic Vale had spent years believing death was an ending.

A person died.

A chapter closed.

A wound remained.

But life continued.

That was what he told himself after his father died.

That was what he told himself after losing people he loved.

That was how he survived.

But now he understood something different.

Sometimes death was not the end.

Sometimes death was where the truth was buried.

The accusation echoed inside his head.

Mia Carter took Harper.

The security footage showed it.

The evidence pointed to it.

The woman Dominic trusted most after everything that happened had walked into Harper’s room and taken her away.

The same woman who had begged him to protect her.

The same woman who had risked her life to save her daughter.

The same woman who told him everyone was hiding the truth.

For several minutes, Dominic could not move.

Everyone waited for him to react.

Daniel.

The guards.

The people who had watched Dominic destroy enemies without hesitation.

But this was different.

Because anger was easy.

Betrayal was easy.

The hardest thing was accepting that someone you believed was good might not be.

“Boss.”

Daniel’s voice pulled him back.

“What are your orders?”

Dominic looked at the screen.

At Mia’s frozen image.

“No one touches her.”

Daniel frowned.

“Boss?”

“Did you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“Find her.”

A pause.

“But bring her alive.”

Everyone left.

Except Claire.

She remained standing near the doorway.

Dominic noticed.

“You knew.”

It was not a question.

Claire looked tired.

“I suspected.”

“About Mia?”

“Yes.”

His eyes became colder.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Claire laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Because every time I tried to tell you something
”

She looked at him.

“You looked at me like I was another enemy.”

Dominic said nothing.

Because she was right.

But that did not erase the pain.

“Mia would never hurt Harper.”

Claire’s words surprised him.

Dominic looked at her.

“You just said you suspected her.”

“I suspect she took Harper.”

A pause.

“But not to harm her.”

“Then why?”

Claire looked toward the broken window.

“Because someone else was coming.”

Dominic froze.

“What?”

“Mia knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That if Nathan found Harper first
”

Claire swallowed.

“Harper wouldn’t survive.”

The room became silent.

Dominic looked back at the security footage.

Mia taking Harper.

Not running.

Not hiding.

Protecting.

A terrible possibility entered his mind.

What if this was not a kidnapping?

What if it was a rescue?

“Where would she go?”

Claire looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

“You knew her for three years.”

“So did you.”

The answer irritated him.

Because it was true.

He knew Mia’s habits.

Her kindness.

Her fears.

But he did not know her past.

Then Dominic remembered something.

The drawing.

The bird symbol.

His father’s secret room.

The hidden documents.

Everything connected to places.

Hidden places.

Places nobody knew.

Except Mia.

“Mia didn’t take Harper to run.”

Claire looked at him.

“No.”

“She took her somewhere they couldn’t find her.”

Dominic immediately turned.

“Daniel.”

His security chief returned.

“Yes?”

“Search every property connected to the Vale family.”

Daniel nodded.

“Already doing that.”

“No.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Search the places that don’t exist.”

Daniel understood.

The old Vale secrets.

Two hours later, they found it.

An abandoned piece of land outside the city.

A place not listed under the Vale name.

A place hidden through old ownership records.

A place Dominic had never heard of.

The graveyard.

Dominic stood at the entrance.

The air was cold.

The trees were dead.

The place looked forgotten.

But Daniel noticed something.

“There are fresh footprints.”

Dominic looked down.

Small.

A child’s shoes.

Harper.

They moved quickly.

No guards.

No weapons raised.

Because Dominic understood.

If Mia was hiding Harper here, she was not the threat.

At the center of the graveyard stood a small stone building.

An old chapel.

The door was unlocked.

Inside was a single room.

A table.

A chair.

A candle.

And Harper.

She ran immediately.

“Mr. Vale!”

Dominic dropped to his knees.

He held her tightly.

For a moment, he forgot everything else.

The secrets.

The betrayal.

The war.

Only Harper mattered.

“You’re okay.”

She nodded.

“Mommy said I had to hide.”

Dominic looked around.

“Where is your mother?”

Harper’s face changed.

“She went to get something.”

“What?”

“A truth.”

Before Dominic could ask more, a sound came from outside.

A slow clap.

Everyone turned.

Mia stood at the entrance.

Dominic froze.

For a moment, he felt anger.

Then relief.

Then confusion.

All at once.

“You took her.”

Mia nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mia looked at Harper.

“Because someone was coming for her.”

“Who?”

Mia did not answer.

She looked toward the graveyard.

Dominic followed her gaze.

A row of old graves.

One name caught his attention.

Richard Vale.

His father.

But the date was wrong.

Dominic stepped closer.

“What is this?”

Mia walked beside him.

“The place where your family buried its sins.”

He looked at the grave.

“My father?”

Mia nodded.

“Not his body.”

A pause.

“His secrets.”

She pointed toward the ground.

“There is something underneath.”

Dominic looked at Daniel.

The security team began digging.

Minutes passed.

Then metal.

A hidden container.

Again.

Another box.

Dominic opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

A journal.

And a letter.

But this letter was not from his father.

It was from his mother.

Dominic stopped breathing.

His mother.

The woman everyone said died when he was young.

The woman whose name disappeared from family history.

He opened the letter.

The first line:

“Dominic, my son.”

His hands shook.

“If you are reading this, then they failed to erase me completely.”

Dominic looked up.

“Mia
”

She looked away.

“She wasn’t dead.”

Silence.

The world seemed to stop.

“My mother is alive?”

Mia nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“But Nathan does.”

Dominic read more.

The letter explained everything.

His mother had discovered the truth about the Vale empire.

She discovered Richard Vale’s organization.

She discovered Daniel.

She discovered the plan to control Dominic’s future.

And when she tried to expose it

she was removed.

Not killed.

Hidden.

The final paragraph destroyed him.

“Dominic, I left because staying would have killed you.”

“Your father believed power could protect you.”

“I believed love could.”

Dominic closed the letter.

For years, he thought his mother abandoned him.

For years, he carried that pain.

Now he learned something worse.

She left because she loved him.

Mia approached.

“I’m sorry.”

Dominic looked at her.

“For what?”

“For making you discover everything this way.”

He stared at her.

“You took Harper.”

“Yes.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You hid things.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Why should I trust you?”

Mia looked at him.

“Because when I had the chance to leave
”

She glanced at Harper.

“I stayed.”

Dominic looked at Harper.

Then at the graveyard.

Then at the secrets surrounding him.

Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

Dominic noticed.

“What happened?”

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“We found Nathan.”

“Where?”

Daniel looked at the graveyard.

“He’s here.”

Everyone turned.

A figure stood between the trees.

Nathan Cross.

Dominic walked forward.

“Nathan.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You finally found it.”

Dominic held up the letter.

“My mother.”

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Nathan remained silent.

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“Where is she?”

Nathan answered quietly:

“She’s the only person who knows the final truth.”

“What truth?”

Nathan looked at Harper.

Then at Dominic.

“The truth about why your father chose you.”

A cold wind passed through the graveyard.

Because Dominic finally understood.

Every secret.

Every betrayal.

Every death.

Everything had been leading here.

Not to money.

Not to power.

Not to revenge.

To one question.

Why him?

Nathan stepped closer.

“And when you learn the answer
”

A pause.

“You will understand why your father was afraid of his own son.”

Dominic stared at him.

Because after everything

May you like

that was the one secret he still did not know.
