CHAPTER 3: CLAIRE BENNETT’S PERFECT LIE

CHAPTER 3: CLAIRE BENNETT’S PERFECT LIE

Dominic Vale had always believed perfection was suspicious.

A perfect business deal.

A perfect friendship.

A perfect smile.

Nothing in his world was ever perfect.

Everything had a price.

Everything had a weakness.

Everything had a hidden motive.

Yet Claire Bennett had spent two years convincing him otherwise.

She was elegant.

Intelligent.

Calm.

The kind of woman who knew exactly what to say and exactly when to say it.

She never raised her voice.

Never lost control.

Never made mistakes.

And that was the first mistake she made.

Because Dominic finally noticed.

Nobody was that perfect.

The security footage played again.

And again.

And again.

Dominic sat alone in his office watching the same thirty seconds.

Claire walking through the underground hallway.

Claire opening the basement door.

Claire entering.

Three minutes later

Mia was inside.

Trapped.

Dominic stopped the video.

He stared at the frozen image of Claire’s face.

There was no panic.

No confusion.

No hesitation.

Just purpose.

That was what disturbed him.

Not that Claire had gone downstairs.

That she looked like she knew exactly where she was going.

Daniel stood across the room.

“Do you want me to bring her in?”

Dominic did not answer immediately.

The old Dominic would have.

The old Dominic would have sent men.

Locked doors.

Demanded answers.

But something had changed.

Mia’s words remained in his mind.

“They are trying to replace you.”

If Claire was involved, he needed the truth.

Not revenge.

Not assumptions.

Truth.

“Not yet.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Boss?”

“Watch her.”

“And if she runs?”

Dominic looked at the screen.

“She won’t.”

“Why?”

A cold expression appeared on his face.

“Because people who believe they are winning never run.”

Claire arrived at the mansion that evening.

She walked through the front doors as if nothing had happened.

As if a woman had not almost died beneath the house.

As if Dominic had not watched the evidence.

She removed her coat.

“Dominic?”

He stood near the fireplace.

Waiting.

She smiled.

There it was again.

That perfect smile.

“I was worried about you.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Were you?”

The smile faded slightly.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I’m asking.”

Claire studied him.

She knew him.

That was dangerous.

She knew when he was angry.

She knew when he was suspicious.

She knew when he was about to make a decision.

But she had never seen this version of him.

Quiet.

Controlled.

Cold.

“What happened?” she asked.

Dominic poured himself a drink.

“Mia woke up.”

Claire immediately reacted.

Relief.

Too fast.

Then concern.

“Is she okay?”

Dominic watched her carefully.

“You tell me.”

The room became silent.

Claire slowly sat down.

“Dominic.”

“Yes?”

“I know what this looks like.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

She sighed.

“You think I had something to do with it.”

Dominic said nothing.

Claire continued.

“But you’re wrong.”

“Am I?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then she looked directly at him.

“Someone is trying to make you doubt the people closest to you.”

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Because that was exactly what the enemy wanted.

Make him doubt.

Make him isolate himself.

Make him vulnerable.

“So you’re saying someone framed you?”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

“Convenient.”

Her expression hardened.

“Do you really think I would hurt Mia?”

Dominic did not answer.

That silence hurt her.

Or at least she made it look like it did.

“I loved you.”

The words came softly.

Almost perfectly timed.

Dominic hated that.

Because Claire was good.

Very good.

“I was going to become your wife.”

A pause.

“I was going to be Harper’s family.”

At Harper’s name, Dominic’s expression changed.

Claire noticed.

Of course she noticed.

“She needs stability.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Do not use my daughter to defend yourself.”

Claire became quiet.

For the first time

she looked genuinely hurt.

But Dominic had learned something.

People could fake pain.

They could not fake fear.

And Claire was not afraid.

“You want the truth?”

Dominic nodded.

“Yes.”

Claire stood.

“Fine.”

She walked toward the window.

“You think Mia is innocent.”

“I think she was locked underground.”

“That doesn’t make her innocent.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.”

Claire turned.

“You don’t know who Mia Carter really is.”

“I know enough.”

“No.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You know what she wants you to know.”

A pause.

“She came into your house three years ago.”

Dominic said nothing.

“She became close to Harper.”

Another pause.

“She earned your trust.”

Another.

“And now she suddenly appears with a secret connected to your father?”

Claire shook her head.

“That is not a coincidence.”

For a moment, Dominic considered it.

Because Claire was saying something dangerous.

Something logical.

Mia did hide things.

Mia did lie.

Mia did know his father.

But the difference was simple.

Mia had been afraid.

Claire was not.

“Why did you go to the basement?”

Silence.

There it was.

The question Claire did not expect.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What?”

“The night Mia disappeared.”

Claire looked away.

“I already told you.”

“No.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“You told me about the wine.”

A pause.

“But you didn’t explain why you were there.”

Claire remained silent.

“Claire.”

Finally, she answered.

“I heard something.”

“What?”

“Noise.”

“From the basement?”

“Yes.”

“And you went alone?”

“Yes.”

Dominic stared.

“You heard something strange from a locked area under my house
”

A pause.

“And instead of calling security
”

Another pause.

“You went there yourself?”

Claire looked at him.

“I was scared.”

Dominic almost laughed.

Because that was the first emotion she had shown all night.

Fear.

But it was not fear from being accused.

It was fear from being exposed.

“Open your phone.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“Your phone.”

“Why?”

“Because I asked.”

Her expression changed.

The old Claire would have argued.

This Claire hesitated.

Only one second.

But Dominic saw it.

“No.”

Her voice became cold.

“I’m not giving you my private phone.”

Dominic nodded slowly.

There it was.

The real Claire.

Not the elegant woman.

Not the perfect fiancée.

The woman behind the mask.

That night, Dominic did not sleep.

He reviewed everything.

Every conversation.

Every moment.

The first time Claire met him.

The first time she mentioned marriage.

The first time she asked about his family.

The first time she asked about his father.

A memory appeared.

Two years earlier.

They were sitting at dinner.

Claire had casually asked:

“Was your father ever afraid of losing everything?”

At the time, Dominic thought it was an innocent question.

Now?

It felt different.

At 3:17 a.m., Dominic received a message.

Unknown number.

A photograph.

His blood turned cold.

It was Claire.

Years earlier.

Standing beside Nathan.

Before she met Dominic.

The message appeared.

“Your fiancĂ©e did not enter your life by accident.”

Another message followed.

“Ask Nathan why he introduced you.”

Dominic immediately called Nathan.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

A third time.

Still nothing.

Then Daniel entered the office.

“Boss.”

Dominic looked up.

“What?”

Daniel hesitated.

“We searched Claire’s apartment.”

Dominic stood.

“And?”

Daniel placed a folder on the desk.

“We found this.”

Inside was a file.

Old.

Detailed.

About Dominic.

His company.

His family.

His weaknesses.

His habits.

His schedule.

Everything.

On the cover was a name.

PROJECT VALE.

Dominic opened the file.

The first page contained one sentence.

SUBJECT: DOMINIC VALE

OBJECTIVE: Replace him without destroying him.

His hands tightened.

Because suddenly Mia’s warning made sense.

Someone was not trying to kill him.

Someone was trying to become him.

Then another page fell out.

A photograph.

A woman.

A woman Dominic recognized.

Claire’s mother.

But beside her

was Dominic’s father.

The past.

The present.

Everything connected.

The next morning, Dominic confronted Claire.

But she was already waiting.

Sitting calmly in his office.

Like she knew he would come.

“You found it.”

Dominic stopped.

“You knew.”

Claire smiled sadly.

“I knew you would eventually.”

“Who are you?”

She looked at him.

Not afraid.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“Someone who was sent here.”

A pause.

“But not for the reason you think.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Then tell me.”

Claire looked toward the window.

“Your father ruined my family.”

Silence.

“My mother spent her life trying to destroy the Vale name.”

Dominic stared.

“And you?”

Claire looked back.

“I was supposed to finish what she started.”

A pause.

“But something went wrong.”

“What?”

Her eyes softened.

“You.”

Dominic said nothing.

Claire whispered:

“I was supposed to destroy you.”

A pause.

“But I fell in love with you.”

For the first time

Dominic Vale had no answer.

Because the most dangerous lie was not one that sounded false.

It was one that contained a piece of truth.

Claire stood.

“But you need to understand something.”

“What?”

She looked toward the basement.

“Mia knows why your father died.”

Dominic froze.

“And if she tells you
”

Claire’s voice lowered.

“You will realize the person you hate
”

A pause.

“Was the person who saved you.”

Claire left.

Leaving Dominic alone.

With questions.

With anger.

With uncertainty.

Because now he no longer knew who the enemy was.

Claire?

Nathan?

Mia?

Or his own family history?

And somewhere inside the city

Nathan Cross watched the news about Dominic reopening the investigation.

He smiled.

Because everything was happening exactly as planned.

He picked up his phone.

And sent one message.

May you like

“Phase Two begins.”
