CHAPTER 10: THE MAFIA BOSS WHO LOST CONTROL

CHAPTER 10: THE MAFIA BOSS WHO LOST CONTROL

Dominic Vale had built his entire life around control.

Control of his emotions.

Control of his enemies.

Control of every situation before it became a threat.

People feared him because he was always ten steps ahead.

They said Dominic Vale never panicked.

Never hesitated.

Never lost.

But they were wrong.

Because there was one thing Dominic could never control.

Fear.

Not his own.

Someone else’s.

Especially the fear of a child who had already lost too much.

The first explosion happened at 2:13 a.m.

Not large.

Not enough to destroy the mansion.

Just enough to send a message.

Nathan wanted them awake.

He wanted them afraid.

The windows shook.

The lights flickered.

Harper screamed.

And Dominic Vale stopped thinking like a businessman.

He stopped thinking like a strategist.

He stopped thinking like the man who had survived every war thrown at him.

He became something else.

A father.

“Get her downstairs.”

Dominic’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

Mia immediately picked up Harper.

But Harper reached for Dominic.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Harper.”

“Don’t leave.”

The words were small.

Almost invisible beneath the alarms.

But they hit harder than any attack.

Because Dominic knew that look.

The look of someone expecting abandonment.

The same look he had seen after Lauren died.

The same look he had ignored because he did not know how to fix it.

“I’m not leaving.”

Harper stared.

“Promise?”

Dominic placed his hand over hers.

“I promise.”

This time, he understood what a promise meant.

Not a comforting sentence.

Not something said to stop fear.

A promise was a responsibility.

Daniel rushed in.

“Boss.”

Dominic turned.

“How many?”

“Unknown.”

“Location?”

“North entrance.”

Dominic immediately knew.

“Diversion.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Nathan was not attacking the front.

He was testing them.

Finding weaknesses.

Learning their response.

Exactly like Dominic would have done.

And that realization bothered him more than the attack.

Because Nathan knew him.

Better than anyone.

“Seal the lower levels.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“The basement?”

Dominic nodded.

“Yes.”

The basement.

The place where everything began.

The place where Mia was almost killed.

The place where secrets had lived for years.

Nathan knew about it.

If Nathan wanted Harper

that was where he would look.

The security monitors came back online.

The screens showed the property.

Vehicles.

Movement.

Then one camera changed.

A man appeared.

Standing outside the gate.

Alone.

No weapon visible.

No guards.

No fear.

Nathan Cross.

Dominic stared.

Everyone waited.

“What is he doing?”

Daniel asked.

Dominic did not answer.

Because he knew.

Nathan was not there to fight.

He was there to talk.

The gates opened.

Everyone reacted.

“Boss—”

Dominic raised a hand.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re not going out there.”

“Yes.”

“It’s a trap.”

Dominic looked at the screen.

“I know.”

That was what scared everyone.

Dominic knew.

And he was still going.

The two men stood in the courtyard.

The same place where they had celebrated victories.

The same place where Nathan once told Dominic:

“We built this together.”

Now they stood like strangers.

“You look tired.”

Nathan said.

Dominic almost smiled.

“You look like someone who came to die.”

Nathan’s expression did not change.

“Maybe I did.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Dominic asked:

“Why Harper?”

Nathan looked toward the mansion.

“Because she is the only thing your father couldn’t corrupt.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“She is a child.”

“Yes.”

“Not a symbol.”

Nathan looked back.

“To you.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“She is not a weapon.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you hunting her?”

Nathan was silent.

Then:

“Because if she inherits the Vale legacy, everything starts again.”

Dominic understood.

Nathan truly believed he was saving the world.

That was what made him dangerous.

People who knew they were evil could be stopped.

People who believed they were right

were harder.

“You killed Daniel.”

Nathan looked away.

“I failed Daniel.”

“No.”

Dominic’s voice hardened.

“You chose.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

For a moment, Dominic saw the old friend.

The man who cared.

The man who regretted.

Then it disappeared.

“I was given a choice.”

“By who?”

Nathan did not answer.

Dominic already knew.

“Eleanor.”

Nathan remained silent.

That was enough.

Dominic stepped back.

“You let her manipulate you.”

Nathan laughed quietly.

“You think I was manipulated?”

A bitter smile.

“Dominic, your entire life has been manipulated.”

Those words hurt because they contained truth.

“Your father chose you.”

Nathan continued.

“Not Daniel.”

A pause.

“He erased one son to protect another.”

Dominic said nothing.

“He built you into the person he wanted.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Do you know what that feels like?”

Dominic wanted to answer.

But he couldn’t.

Because Nathan was not asking.

He was remembering.

“You think I hate you because of power.”

Nathan’s voice became quieter.

“I hate you because your father gave you everything
”

A pause.

“And took everything from Daniel.”

Dominic felt anger.

But beneath it

something else.

Understanding.

Because Nathan was not just angry.

He was broken.

“Where is Eleanor?”

Nathan looked at him.

“You still think you can solve this.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“I will.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“You won’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the person who started this is standing inside your house.”

Dominic froze.

“What?”

Nathan looked toward the mansion.

“You still haven’t found the real traitor.”

Then every security alarm activated.

Daniel’s voice came through the radio.

“Boss!”

Dominic turned.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then Daniel’s voice changed.

“Harper is gone.”

Everything stopped.

The world became silent.

Not the silence of peace.

The silence before destruction.

Dominic ran.

He did not remember moving.

He only remembered reaching the house.

Mia was on the floor.

Crying.

The room was destroyed.

The window broken.

Security system disabled.

And on Harper’s bed

a small drawing.

The one she made earlier.

Four people.

Mia.

Harper.

Dominic.

The faceless man.

On the back was a message.

Written in adult handwriting.

“You promised you wouldn’t leave.”

Dominic stared.

Because the person who took Harper knew exactly where to hurt him.

Not his money.

Not his empire.

Not his pride.

His promise.

Mia looked up.

“Dominic
”

Her voice broke.

“I’m sorry.”

He looked at her.

For the first time in years

she saw something she never expected.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Pain.

Pure pain.

“Who took her?”

Mia shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Dominic looked around.

Then he noticed something.

A small silver bird pendant on the floor.

Harper’s.

Except it was not broken.

It had been removed carefully.

Placed there.

Like a message.

Dominic picked it up.

And underneath it was a tiny piece of paper.

One sentence.

“Ask your mother why she abandoned us.”

Dominic froze.

His mother.

A person almost never mentioned.

A woman who died when Dominic was young.

A woman whose past was always hidden.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Daniel approached slowly.

“Boss.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Find Nathan.”

Daniel hesitated.

“What about Harper?”

Dominic’s eyes became cold.

“Finding Nathan is how we find Harper.”

The old Dominic returned.

But different.

The old Dominic wanted revenge.

This Dominic wanted answers.

Meanwhile, somewhere far from Vale Manor

Harper opened her eyes.

She was lying in a room she had never seen.

Her hands were not tied.

She was not hurt.

Someone had taken care of her.

A woman sat nearby.

An older woman.

Harper looked at her.

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled.

A familiar smile.

A dangerous smile.

“My name is Eleanor.”

Harper frowned.

“My mommy knows you.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And your grandfather hated me.”

Harper looked scared.

“Where is Mr. Vale?”

Eleanor smiled.

“Looking for you.”

“Will he come?”

The old woman studied her.

Then whispered:

“Yes.”

A pause.

“He always comes for what he loves.”

Back at the mansion, Dominic looked at the security footage.

One frame.

One second.

One person entering Harper’s room.

The image was blurry.

But Dominic recognized the movement.

The posture.

The ring.

He whispered the name.

“No
”

Because the person who took Harper

was someone he never expected.

Someone who had been protecting her all along.

May you like

Mia Carter.
