CHAPTER 7: THE BLOODLINE SECRET

CHAPTER 7: THE BLOODLINE SECRET

Dominic Vale had spent his entire life believing he knew exactly who belonged to him.

His family.

His company.

His people.

His enemies.

Everything had a name.

Everything had a place.

Everything had a reason.

But one message destroyed that certainty.

Ask Mia who Harper’s father really is.

Fourteen words.

That was all it took.

Fourteen words to make Dominic question the one thing he never thought he would question.

Family.

The morning after the attack, the estate felt different.

Not because of the damage.

The broken windows could be replaced.

The damaged walls could be repaired.

Money could fix almost anything.

Almost.

The difference was the people.

Everyone moved carefully.

Security guards checked every corner.

Employees avoided eye contact.

Nobody felt safe.

Because everyone finally understood something.

The threat was not outside anymore.

It was inside.

Dominic sat in his office staring at the message.

He had not slept.

Not because he was tired.

Because every time he closed his eyes, he saw Harper.

The little girl standing at the bottom of the stairs.

The little girl who had lost her mother for three days.

The little girl who had trusted him enough to ask:

“Promise you’ll come back?”

And now someone wanted him to believe there was another secret involving her.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

Mia entered.

She looked exhausted.

But she was no longer weak.

The fear was still there.

But beneath it was something else.

Determination.

“You know.”

Dominic looked up.

The words were not a question.

Mia stopped.

“What?”

“You know why they sent that message.”

Silence.

That was all he needed.

Dominic stood.

“Who is Harper’s father?”

Mia’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Pain.

Dominic felt something inside him tighten.

Because he knew that expression.

It was the expression of someone carrying a truth too heavy to hold.

“Mia.”

She closed the door behind her.

“Harper is innocent.”

Dominic frowned.

“I didn’t ask anything about her innocence.”

“Yes, you did.”

Her voice softened.

“You asked who her father is.”

A pause.

“But what you really asked was whether she belongs here.”

Dominic looked away.

Because she was right.

“I would never hurt that child.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me.”

Mia remained silent.

Finally, she whispered:

“Harper’s father was Daniel Carter.”

Dominic waited.

Nothing.

The name meant nothing.

“Who is Daniel Carter?”

Mia looked at him.

“That’s the problem.”

A pause.

“Nobody knows.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.”

Mia sat down.

“Daniel Carter was not his real name.”

Of course.

Another hidden identity.

Another secret.

Another person connected to his world.

“Who was he?”

Mia looked toward the window.

“He was your brother.”

The room became completely silent.

Dominic did not move.

Did not blink.

For several seconds, he wondered if he had heard incorrectly.

“My what?”

“Your half-brother.”

The word felt impossible.

Because Dominic had spent his entire life believing he was an only child.

“My father never had another son.”

Mia looked at him sadly.

“He did.”

Dominic turned away.

“No.”

“Dominic—”

“No.”

His voice became sharper.

“My father had one child.”

Mia did not argue.

She simply said:

“That is what he wanted everyone to believe.”

The memories came back.

His father’s strange behavior.

The hidden documents.

The secret room.

The warnings.

Everything pointed toward a life Dominic never knew existed.

“How?”

Mia took a breath.

“Your father had a relationship before your mother.”

Dominic said nothing.

“He had a son.”

“Why hide him?”

“Because the boy was proof of something your father wanted erased.”

“What?”

Mia looked at him.

“That the Vale family was not as clean as everyone believed.”

Dominic laughed once.

No humor.

Just disbelief.

“My father built everything.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re telling me he had another family?”

“Yes.”

“And everyone knew except me?”

Mia looked down.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

More than anger.

More than betrayal.

Because everyone had protected Dominic from the truth.

But nobody understood what that protection did.

It made him a stranger in his own life.

“Where is Daniel?”

Mia hesitated.

“He died.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

Dominic froze.

Five years.

The timing mattered.

“What happened?”

“A car accident.”

Dominic stared.

Another accident.

Another death.

Another convenient tragedy.

“Was it?”

Mia looked away.

“No.”

Dominic’s voice became cold.

“Who killed him?”

“I don’t know.”

“You know something.”

Mia stayed quiet.

“Mia.”

Finally:

“Nathan knew about Daniel.”

The room changed.

Again.

Nathan.

Always Nathan.

Dominic walked to the window.

He looked over the property.

The same place where secrets had been buried.

“How did Nathan know?”

“Because your father trusted him.”

“Everyone trusted him.”

A bitter smile.

“Apparently everyone except me.”

Mia looked at him.

“There’s something else.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Of course.

There was always something else.

“What?”

“Harper’s father wasn’t just your brother.”

A pause.

“He was supposed to inherit the Vale empire.”

Dominic turned.

“What?”

Mia nodded.

“Your father changed his will.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel discovered the truth about the organization.”

“What truth?”

Mia hesitated.

Then:

“That the Vale empire was built using a system your father created to control people.”

Dominic remembered the documents.

The secret organization.

The names.

The influence.

But now there was another piece.

His brother.

A brother who knew the truth.

A brother who died.

A daughter who remained.

“Why did you never tell me?”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Harper was in danger the moment people knew who she was.”

Dominic looked at her.

“She was already in danger.”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke.

“That’s why I stayed.”

A silence passed.

Then Dominic asked the question he feared most.

“Does Harper know?”

“No.”

“Does Claire know?”

Mia looked away.

Dominic understood.

“Yes.”

The pieces connected.

Claire.

Nathan.

Harper.

The secret room.

The attack.

Everything.

They were not chasing money.

They were chasing blood.

That afternoon, Dominic watched Harper playing in the garden.

She was laughing.

A sound that had become rare in his house.

Mia stood beside him.

“She looks like him.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Daniel?”

Mia nodded.

“The eyes.”

A pause.

“The kindness.”

Another pause.

“The way she believes people can be good.”

Dominic looked down.

A child.

A secret.

A bloodline nobody wanted him to know existed.

“Did my father love him?”

Mia was silent.

Then:

“Yes.”

Dominic looked surprised.

“Then why abandon him?”

Mia answered softly:

“Because sometimes people destroy the things they love most when they are afraid of losing everything.”

That sentence stayed with him.

Because it sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Dominic had done the same.

After Lauren died in another life.

After losing people.

He built walls.

He pushed everyone away.

He convinced himself distance was protection.

Maybe his father had done the same.

That night, Dominic entered the hidden room again.

He searched through every document.

Until he found one file.

A birth certificate.

Daniel Vale.

Mother: Unknown.

Father: Richard Vale.

Then another document.

A photograph.

A young boy.

Standing beside Richard Vale.

And written on the back:

“My first son. My greatest regret.”

Dominic sat down.

For the first time in years

he felt something he hated.

Guilt.

Because somewhere out there, his brother had existed.

And Dominic never knew.

Then his phone rang.

Nathan.

Dominic answered.

“What do you want?”

Nathan’s voice was quiet.

“You know now.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Does she know?”

“Who?”

“Harper.”

Dominic’s eyes moved toward the window.

“No.”

“Good.”

The answer made Dominic angry.

“Why?”

Nathan sighed.

“Because if she knew who she was
”

A pause.

“They would stop trying to control you.”

Dominic froze.

“What does that mean?”

Nathan answered:

“It means Harper is not just a child.”

Silence.

“She is the last living member of the original Vale bloodline.”

Dominic’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Nathan.”

“Yes?”

“If you knew all this
”

A pause.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Nathan’s voice became almost broken.

“Because I promised your father.”

The call ended.

Dominic stared at the phone.

Another promise.

Another secret.

Another person deciding his life for him.

Then Harper appeared at the office door.

“Mr. Vale?”

He immediately changed his expression.

“What happened?”

She held a small box.

“I found this under Mommy’s bed.”

Dominic looked at it.

“What is it?”

Harper handed it to him.

“I think it’s for you.”

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Mia’s.

But the date made Dominic freeze.

It was written five years ago.

The day Daniel Carter died.

The first sentence destroyed him.

“Dominic, if you are reading this, then my son is gone, and you finally know the truth.”

Dominic looked at Harper.

Then at Mia.

Then at the letter.

Because suddenly he understood.

The secret under his house was not about his empire.

Not about revenge.

Not about power.

It was about a child.

A child everyone wanted to control.

A child whose existence could destroy everything.

May you like

And Dominic Vale had just become the only person standing between Harper and the people who wanted her gone.
