CHAPTER 9: THE WAR INSIDE VALE MANOR

CHAPTER 9: THE WAR INSIDE VALE MANOR

The greatest wars were never fought on battlefields.

They were fought inside houses.

Inside families.

Inside the hearts of people who once trusted each other.

Dominic Vale knew how to fight enemies.

He knew how to predict attacks.

He knew how to destroy threats before they reached him.

But he had never prepared for a war where every weapon was a memory.

Every bullet was a secret.

Every enemy had once been family.

Vale Manor had become a fortress.

Extra guards surrounded the property.

Security systems were upgraded.

Every entrance was monitored.

Every employee was investigated.

Nobody entered without permission.

Nobody left without being questioned.

But Dominic knew something his security team did not.

A fortress could protect against strangers.

It could not protect against ghosts.

The people who had hurt him were not hiding outside the walls.

They were connected to his past.

His father.

His brother.

His closest friend.

His future wife.

Everyone carried a piece of the truth.

And every piece had been hidden from him.

Mia sat in the library with Harper.

The little girl was drawing again.

She drew often now.

Dominic noticed that.

Children drew the things they could not explain.

A house.

A family.

A person they missed.

A person they feared losing.

Today’s drawing was different.

There were four people.

Mia.

Harper.

Dominic.

And a man standing far away.

His face was crossed out.

Dominic noticed.

“Who is that?”

Harper looked down.

“I don’t know.”

“Why did you cross his face?”

The child became quiet.

“Because Mommy says some people pretend to be nice.”

Dominic looked at Mia.

Mia looked away.

He hated that Harper had learned this lesson so young.

Children should not understand betrayal.

They should not know that smiles could hide danger.

They should not know that someone could say “I love you” while planning to hurt you.

But Harper lived in Dominic’s world now.

A world where innocence was always the first thing people sacrificed.

Daniel Mercer entered the room.

“Boss.”

Dominic stood.

“What?”

“We found something about Nathan.”

Mia immediately became tense.

Dominic noticed.

“What?”

Daniel handed him a tablet.

“Financial records.”

Dominic looked through them.

Transfers.

Accounts.

Hidden companies.

Then he saw it.

A company name.

Carter Foundation.

He looked up.

“What is this?”

Daniel answered:

“An organization created fifteen years ago.”

“By who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Nathan.”

Dominic stared.

“Carter?”

Mia stepped closer.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“That name
”

Her face became pale.

“Daniel Carter.”

Silence.

Dominic understood.

“Nathan created an organization using my brother’s name?”

Mia shook her head.

“I don’t understand.”

Dominic continued reading.

The Carter Foundation had funded orphan programs.

Medical research.

Community projects.

On the surface

It looked good.

Almost too good.

Then he found the hidden transactions.

Millions moved through unknown accounts.

Money disappearing.

Money appearing.

A second purpose.

“Why would Nathan create something connected to Daniel?”

Mia answered quietly:

“Because Nathan knew Daniel’s legacy would matter.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

She looked toward Harper.

“It means Nathan knew one day the truth would come out.”

Dominic felt anger rising.

Nathan had planned everything.

For years.

Maybe decades.

Every move had been calculated.

Every person had been placed.

Including Claire.

Including Mia.

Including him.

Then the front door opened.

A guard rushed in.

“Boss.”

Dominic turned.

“What happened?”

The guard looked nervous.

“Miss Bennett is here.”

Everyone became silent.

Claire.

Dominic walked into the main hall.

Claire stood there alone.

No security.

No excuses.

No perfect smile.

She looked tired.

Older.

Human.

“I need to talk to you.”

Dominic stopped several feet away.

“You have a strange way of asking for conversations.”

Claire ignored the comment.

“Nathan is going to move tonight.”

Dominic studied her.

“How do you know?”

“Because I know him.”

A pause.

“I know how he thinks.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“You know him very well.”

Claire accepted the accusation.

“Yes.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

The answer surprised him.

Claire continued:

“Not completely.”

She looked around the mansion.

“This place was never built to keep people safe.”

Dominic said nothing.

“It was built to hide things.”

She stepped closer.

“My mother and Nathan are not working together anymore.”

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

“They were.”

A pause.

“But Nathan changed the plan.”

“Why?”

Claire looked at him.

“Because he found something bigger.”

Dominic waited.

“What?”

Claire whispered:

“Your father’s final project.”

The phrase immediately caught his attention.

“Final project?”

Claire nodded.

“The reason your father hid Daniel.”

Mia entered behind Dominic.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Claire’s expression changed.

“You knew?”

Mia’s face was filled with fear.

“What is it?”

Claire answered:

“The reason Dominic was never supposed to inherit the empire.”

Silence.

Dominic looked at Mia.

“Mia?”

She looked down.

“I hoped you would never know.”

Again.

That sentence.

Dominic felt something break inside.

Everyone hoped he would never know.

Everyone decided what truths he could handle.

“What did my father create?”

Mia whispered:

“An escape plan.”

Dominic frowned.

“From what?”

“From himself.”

Nobody spoke.

Mia continued.

“Your father knew the empire would eventually destroy his family.”

A pause.

“So he created a way to end it.”

Dominic looked confused.

“How?”

“By transferring everything.”

“To who?”

Mia looked at Harper.

The answer was obvious.

And impossible.

“Harper.”

Dominic froze.

“No.”

Mia nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was the only person your father believed could fix his mistakes.”

Dominic looked at the little girl in the hallway.

A four-year-old child.

The heir to everything.

Claire spoke quietly.

“That’s why they want her.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Who?”

“Nathan.”

A pause.

“My mother.”

Another.

“Everyone who knows about the inheritance.”

Suddenly the mansion lights flickered.

Everyone stopped.

Daniel reached for his weapon.

“Security system failure.”

Dominic looked around.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Someone had breached his fortress.

The alarms died.

The cameras turned black.

Then every screen in the mansion activated.

One image appeared.

Nathan Cross.

He looked directly at Dominic.

“Hello, brother.”

Dominic’s face changed.

Because Nathan had never called him that before.

Not once.

Nathan continued.

“I know you found the documents.”

A pause.

“I know you found Daniel’s truth.”

Another.

“And I know you know about Harper.”

Dominic stepped closer to the screen.

“Nathan.”

The image smiled.

“You finally understand.”

“What do you want?”

Nathan’s expression became serious.

“What your father should have done.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“And what is that?”

Nathan answered:

“End the Vale bloodline.”

The room went silent.

Mia held Harper closer.

Claire looked terrified.

For the first time

genuinely terrified.

Nathan continued.

“Your father created an empire that destroyed everyone around him.”

A pause.

“I watched it happen.”

Another.

“I watched Daniel die because of it.”

Dominic stared.

“You killed him.”

Nathan did not deny it.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I allowed it.”

The confession hit harder.

Dominic’s voice became quiet.

“Why?”

Nathan looked at him.

“Because I thought losing Daniel would finally make your father understand.”

A pause.

“But he didn’t.”

The screen flickered.

Nathan’s final words appeared.

“Now I will finish what he started.”

The screens went dark.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Harper whispered:

“Mr. Vale?”

Dominic turned.

She looked afraid.

“Are you going to leave too?”

The question destroyed something inside him.

Because after everything

after every betrayal

after every secret

that was the only thing she feared.

Being abandoned.

Dominic walked toward her.

He knelt.

“No.”

Harper looked at him.

“I promise.”

Mia watched silently.

Because she realized something.

Dominic was no longer protecting the Vale empire.

He was protecting Harper.

And that changed everything.

Outside the mansion, engines started.

Multiple vehicles.

Nathan’s people.

Surrounding the property.

Daniel looked at Dominic.

“Orders?”

Dominic stood.

The fear disappeared.

The doubt disappeared.

Only determination remained.

“Lock down the manor.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Nathan?”

Dominic looked toward the darkness outside.

“The man who was my brother
”

A pause.

“Is coming for my family.”

The war had begun.

Not for money.

Not for power.

Not for revenge.

For a little girl who had no idea she was carrying the fate of an empire.

And inside Vale Manor

May you like

the final battle for the Vale bloodline had started.
