CHAPTER 5: THE FRIEND WHO BECAME AN ENEMY

CHAPTER 5: THE FRIEND WHO BECAME AN ENEMY

Dominic Vale had spent his entire life learning how to identify enemies.

Enemies stood across from him.

They made demands.

They issued threats.

They attacked from the outside.

They were predictable.

But betrayal was different.

Betrayal did not come with a warning.

It came with memories.

It came with laughter.

It came with years of trust.

And that was what made Nathan Cross the most dangerous person Dominic had ever faced.

Because Nathan was not just an enemy.

Nathan was family.

The old photograph sat on Dominic’s desk.

Three people.

His father.

Claire’s mother.

Nathan.

Taken twenty years ago.

Before Dominic built his empire.

Before Nathan became his right hand.

Before either of them understood how powerful secrets could become.

Dominic stared at Nathan’s younger face.

The man looked exactly the same.

Confident.

Loyal.

Fearless.

The man Dominic believed would die for him.

And maybe that was the cruelest part.

Nathan probably would have.

Just not anymore.

“Boss.”

Daniel Mercer entered the office.

Dominic did not look up.

“Tell me everything about Nathan Cross.”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation annoyed Dominic.

“Everything.”

Daniel placed a folder on the desk.

“You really want this?”

Dominic looked at him.

“I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then you should know something.”

“What?”

“I never trusted him.”

Dominic finally looked up.

The statement surprised him.

“You worked with him for fifteen years.”

“Yes.”

“And you never said anything?”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Because he was your brother.”

Silence.

That answer hurt more than an accusation.

Because it was true.

Everyone saw Nathan through Dominic’s eyes.

Daniel opened the folder.

“Nathan Cross was born Nathaniel Crossman.”

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

“He changed his name when he was twenty-three.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

Dominic looked at the documents.

“Find out.”

Daniel continued.

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“Before Nathan met you
”

Daniel paused.

“He worked for your father.”

Dominic became still.

Of course.

Another connection.

Another secret.

“How long?”

“Seven years.”

“Doing what?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Exactly what he does now.”

A pause.

“Managing problems.”

Dominic stood.

“Send me everything.”

Daniel nodded.

Then stopped.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“If Nathan is involved
”

He hesitated.

“Don’t underestimate him.”

Dominic almost smiled.

“Everyone keeps telling me that.”

Daniel looked serious.

“Because everyone knows something you don’t.”

“What?”

Daniel answered quietly:

“You trust him.”

That was the problem.

Not that Nathan was dangerous.

Dominic knew dangerous people.

The problem was that part of him still remembered another man.

A younger Nathan.

The man who sat beside him after his father died.

The man who told him:

“You’re not alone.”

The man who helped him build everything.

The man who saved his life.

Twenty years earlier.

Dominic was twenty-five.

Angry.

Lost.

His father had just died.

The family business was unstable.

Everyone around him wanted control.

Partners.

Relatives.

Executives.

Everyone wanted a piece of the Vale empire.

Dominic was young.

Powerful.

But inexperienced.

That was when Nathan appeared.

Not with money.

Not with promises.

With loyalty.

“I know how they think.”

Nathan told him.

“I know how people like us survive.”

Dominic remembered asking:

“Why help me?”

Nathan smiled.

“Because someone helped me once.”

At the time, Dominic thought it was friendship.

Now he wondered.

Who was that person?

And what did Nathan owe them?

That evening, Dominic found Nathan waiting outside the estate.

No guards.

No weapons.

Just Nathan.

Like old times.

“You came.”

Dominic stopped.

“You expected me?”

Nathan looked at the mansion.

“I know you.”

A pause.

“You always investigate when something doesn’t make sense.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Then you know why I’m here.”

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

A long silence.

“Explain.”

Nathan looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

“I knew this day would come.”

Dominic laughed quietly.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you still lied?”

Nathan looked away.

“Yes.”

The honesty was unexpected.

“Why?”

“Because you weren’t ready.”

Dominic’s expression darkened.

“Do not use that excuse.”

“I’m not.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You weren’t ready because you would have reacted exactly how you’re reacting now.”

“And how is that?”

“Angry.”

A pause.

“Hurt.”

Another.

“Destroyed.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“You locked a woman under my house.”

Nathan’s face changed.

“I did not.”

“Then who did?”

Silence.

That silence was enough.

Dominic noticed.

“You know.”

Nathan looked down.

“I know who did.”

“Who?”

Nathan said nothing.

Dominic’s voice became colder.

“Who?”

Nathan finally answered.

“Claire.”

Dominic stared.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“After protecting her?”

“I wasn’t protecting her.”

“Then what were you doing?”

Nathan looked at him.

“Protecting you.”

Dominic shook his head.

“Everyone says that.”

A bitter smile.

“Everyone hurts me while claiming they are protecting me.”

Nathan walked closer.

“You think I wanted this?”

“I don’t know what you wanted.”

A pause.

“That’s the problem.”

Nathan looked at the mansion.

“I watched your father make the same mistakes.”

Dominic froze.

“What mistakes?”

Nathan’s expression changed.

“The mistake of believing power protects the people you love.”

Dominic hated hearing his father mentioned.

Because every secret led back to him.

“My father trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Nathan looked away.

“Because he knew what I was.”

Dominic waited.

Finally:

“What are you?”

Nathan looked at him.

“Someone who survived.”

The answer made Dominic angry.

“Surviving doesn’t explain betraying me.”

Nathan’s eyes hardened.

“No.”

A pause.

“It explains why I did.”

Nathan revealed something Dominic never expected.

Years ago, before Dominic knew him, Nathan’s family was destroyed by the Vale empire.

Not intentionally.

Not directly.

But because of decisions made by Dominic’s father.

A business war.

A financial attack.

A choice that destroyed thousands of lives.

Including Nathan’s family.

“My father ruined your life.”

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why help me?”

A painful smile appeared.

“Because I wanted to know if you were different.”

Dominic said nothing.

“And you were.”

A pause.

“That was the problem.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You were supposed to become your father.”

“But I didn’t.”

“No.”

His voice became quieter.

“You became someone better.”

A pause.

“And that made everything harder.”

Dominic stared.

“You hate me.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

Nathan answered:

“I hate that I couldn’t hate you.”

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Because that was the truth neither wanted to admit.

Their relationship was never simple.

Not friendship.

Not hatred.

Something between.

Something damaged.

“Why help Claire?”

Dominic asked.

Nathan became silent.

Finally:

“Because Claire’s family deserved justice.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“So this was revenge.”

“No.”

Nathan looked at him.

“This was balance.”

Dominic turned away.

“You helped someone destroy my family.”

Nathan shook his head.

“I helped someone expose yours.”

Dominic looked back.

“What does that mean?”

Nathan stepped closer.

“Your father was not the victim you believe he was.”

Silence.

“He built your empire on something unforgivable.”

Dominic felt anger rising.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to investigate.”

Nathan handed him an old envelope.

“Read it.”

Dominic took it.

“What is this?”

“The truth.”

A pause.

“The reason Mia was willing to die.”

Nathan walked away.

Dominic did not stop him.

Because for the first time in seventeen years

he did not know if he wanted to.

Inside the envelope was a single document.

A legal agreement.

Signed by his father.

And another name.

A name Dominic recognized.

His own mother.

The final line caught his attention.

“Upon discovery of the truth, Dominic Vale must never inherit control of the organization.”

Dominic read it twice.

Then a third time.

Because it was impossible.

His father had planned something.

Something involving him.

Something involving his inheritance.

Something involving the entire Vale empire.

His phone rang.

Mia.

Dominic answered.

“Dominic.”

Her voice sounded frightened.

“Mia?”

“You need to come back.”

“Why?”

A pause.

Then:

“Because Harper found something.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

Mia’s voice dropped.

“She found a room.”

Dominic froze.

“What room?”

“The room your father told me never to open.”

Dominic looked back at the envelope.

At Nathan leaving.

At the mansion filled with hidden doors and buried secrets.

And he finally understood.

The basement was not the secret.

It was only the beginning.

Because somewhere inside his own home

his father had hidden the truth.

May you like

And he had hidden it from Dominic.
