CHAPTER 10 – Adrian's Confession

CHAPTER 10 – Adrian's Confession
Smoke drifted through the shattered warehouse like a living thing.
Sprinklers hissed overhead.
Broken glass covered the concrete floor.
Emergency lights flashed red across twisted steel beams.
For several long seconds...
No one fired.
No one moved.
Evelyn stared through the haze.
Adrian stood at the center of the ruined entrance.
His white dress shirt—once part of his wedding suit—was now stained with dried blood from the gunshot he had taken in the underground archive. His left arm hung stiffly at his side, and fresh cuts marked his face.
Behind him stood Senator Victor Hale.
Perfectly composed.
Perfectly dressed.
As though he had stepped into a business meeting instead of a collapsing warehouse.
His dark suit showed no dust.
No blood.
No fear.
Only confidence.
Officer Daniel Brooks raised his weapon.
"Nobody move!"
Within seconds, detectives surrounded the entrance.
Weapons trained.
Safety catches released.
Lucas Bennett stepped in front of Evelyn instinctively.
Hale smiled.
"I appreciate the hospitality."
Brooks didn't return the smile.
"Hands where I can see them."
Hale slowly lifted both hands.
"I came to talk."
Brooks answered coldly.
"You came with explosives."
"I came after the explosives."
Lucas narrowed his eyes.
"Convenient."
Adrian never looked away from Evelyn.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Are you hurt?"
She stared at him in disbelief.
"That's your first question?"
"It matters."
"No."
She shook her head slowly.
"My first question is much simpler."
She took one step toward him.
"Were any of the last two years real?"
The warehouse fell silent.
Even Hale remained quiet.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then answered.
"Yes."
Her jaw tightened.
"Which part?"
"The night we stayed awake assembling the baby's crib?"
"Yes."
"The vacations?"
"Yes."
"The sonograms?"
"Yes."
"The first time you told me you loved me?"
A long pause.
Finally—
"Yes."
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
"Then why?"
Adrian looked toward the shattered ceiling.
As if searching for courage.
"I was recruited when I was sixteen."
Lucas folded his arms.
"You said seventeen."
"I lied."
Brooks immediately noticed.
"Why?"
"Because the truth is worse."
Adrian slowly sat down on a broken concrete block.
For the first time since the nightmare had begun...
He looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"My father..."
He corrected himself.
"The man I believed was my father..."
"Richard Vale..."
"Raised me to believe William Carter destroyed my family."
Evelyn remained silent.
"I believed Jonathan Vale abandoned us."
"I believed William betrayed him."
"I hated your father before I ever met you."
His voice became distant.
"When I turned sixteen..."
"Richard introduced me to men who called themselves protectors."
"They said Guardian punished traitors."
"They said my real purpose was to restore the Vale family's honor."
Lucas quietly asked,
"They showed you evidence?"
Adrian nodded.
"Manufactured evidence."
"They trained me."
He continued.
"Languages."
"Finance."
"Cybersecurity."
"Psychology."
"They didn't teach loyalty."
"They taught obedience."
Brooks frowned.
"For what purpose?"
Adrian answered without hesitation.
"To become useful."
He looked at Evelyn again.
"The first time I saw you..."
"You were nineteen."
Her eyes widened.
"The university?"
He nodded.
"You were giving a presentation."
"I was sitting in the back."
She searched her memory.
Hundreds of students.
Guest visitors.
She had never noticed him.
"I followed you for months."
"I learned everything."
"What you liked."
"Where you studied."
"Which café you visited."
"Which books you bought."
"Who your friends were."
Every word felt like another knife.
"You studied me."
"I was ordered to."
Lucas interrupted.
"When did your orders change?"
Adrian answered quietly.
"The hospital."
Evelyn frowned.
"What hospital?"
"The day you fainted."
Her expression changed.
Two years earlier.
She had collapsed from exhaustion during a charity event.
Adrian had carried her into the emergency room.
She had always believed it was the moment they truly fell in love.
Adrian smiled sadly.
"You woke up before the doctor came in."
"You apologized for ruining everyone's evening."
"You thanked every nurse."
"You worried more about strangers than yourself."
He lowered his head.
"That was the first time I saw you..."
"...instead of my mission."
Silence settled over the warehouse.
Even Brooks listened.
"I contacted William Carter."
Adrian continued.
Lucas looked surprised.
"Directly?"
"No."
"Through encrypted dead drops."
"He answered."
"What did he say?" Evelyn whispered.
Adrian smiled faintly.
"He told me something I'll never forget."
He looked at her.
"'If you still have a conscience...'"
"'Protect my daughter.'"
Lucas slowly understood.
"So your father wasn't lying."
Adrian nodded.
"I became his source."
"I copied contracts."
"I leaked financial records."
"I warned him whenever Guardian moved against him."
Brooks frowned.
"Then why wasn't Guardian suspicious?"
"They were."
Adrian answered.
"They spent years looking for the leak."
He reached into his pocket.
Slowly.
Brooks tensed.
Adrian removed only a folded photograph.
Old.
Worn.
He handed it to Evelyn.
She unfolded it carefully.
Her breath caught.
It showed William Carter standing beside a much younger Adrian.
Hidden behind stacks of shipping containers.
Neither looked toward the camera.
William was handing Adrian a leather folder.
The photograph had obviously been taken secretly.
On the back...
William's handwriting.
The bravest people are often trapped inside the enemy.
Fresh tears rolled down Evelyn's cheeks.
Hale finally laughed.
A calm...
Almost amused laugh.
"Beautiful story."
Everyone turned toward him.
He slowly clapped.
"Truly inspiring."
Adrian's face hardened.
Hale smiled.
"You forgot one detail."
He looked directly at Evelyn.
"He isn't telling you why he agreed to marry you."
The room became quiet again.
Evelyn looked back at Adrian.
He didn't answer.
Hale's smile widened.
"Go ahead."
"Tell her."
Adrian remained silent.
"Tell her what Guardian promised."
Still nothing.
Hale sighed dramatically.
"I suppose I will."
"Richard Vale was dying."
Evelyn frowned.
"What?"
Hale nodded.
"Terminal cancer."
"He had less than a year."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"It isn't like that."
Hale ignored him.
"We offered Adrian a bargain."
"If he married you..."
"If he delivered legal control over Carter Technologies..."
"Richard would receive treatment."
Lucas shook his head.
"You manipulated him."
"We motivated him."
Hale corrected.
Adrian whispered,
"I believed them."
Evelyn stared at Adrian.
"So you chose your father..."
"...over me."
He looked at her with unbearable sorrow.
"I thought I could save both."
She laughed through tears.
"You saved neither."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"You're right."
"I failed everyone."
"My father died three months ago."
The room fell silent.
"What?"
Evelyn whispered.
Adrian's eyes filled with grief.
"The treatment never existed."
"They lied."
"They needed me obedient."
Lucas quietly muttered,
"Classic leverage."
Hale shrugged.
"Richard outlived his usefulness."
The casual cruelty in his voice made even the detectives stare.
"You killed him?"
Brooks demanded.
Hale smiled.
"I signed paperwork."
"What happened afterward..."
"I leave to other people."
Adrian suddenly stood.
His exhaustion disappeared.
His eyes burned with rage.
"You promised!"
"You swore—"
Hale interrupted calmly.
"I promised possibility."
"You heard certainty."
Before Adrian could move—
Hale reached inside his suit jacket.
Every weapon in the room immediately aimed at him.
But instead of a gun...
He removed a slim black folder.
He tossed it onto the floor in front of Evelyn.
"You deserve the complete truth."
Lucas carefully opened it.
Inside lay a DNA report.
Adrian frowned.
"What is that?"
Lucas scanned the first page.
His expression changed instantly.
"No..."
Evelyn took the report.
The names at the top made her blood freeze.
Jonathan Vale
William Carter
Then...
A highlighted conclusion.
Probability of biological relationship: 99.998%.
Her hands began trembling.
She looked from the report...
To Adrian...
Then back again.
"What does this mean?"
No one answered.
Not Brooks.
Not Lucas.
Not even Hale.
Finally...
Adrian slowly whispered the words that changed everything.
"Jonathan Vale..."
"...wasn't just my father."
"He was your father's brother."
The warehouse fell into stunned silence.
Evelyn's world shifted once again.
The man she had fallen in love with...
The man who had betrayed her...
The father of her unborn child...
Wasn't only connected to her through conspiracy.
He was family.

And somewhere deep inside Project Guardian...
