CHAPTER 9 – The Price of Survival

CHAPTER 9 – The Price of Survival
The freight elevator groaned as it climbed through the darkness.
No one spoke.
The only sounds were the grinding gears... and Evelyn's ragged breathing.
Lucas stood beside her, gripping the leather briefcase so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
Officer Daniel Brooks pressed a bloodstained hand against his side, where a bullet had grazed him during the firefight.
Behind them, the detectives silently counted the evidence bags they had managed to save.
Three ledgers.
Two hard drives.
The cassette tape.
William Carter's letter.
But one person was missing.
Adrian.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally Evelyn whispered,
"We left him."
No one answered.
Because they all knew she was right.
The elevator doors finally opened into an abandoned parking garage nearly thirty floors above the underground archive.
Cold evening air rushed inside.
Police sirens echoed somewhere in the distance.
Brooks immediately spoke into his radio.
"This is Brooks."
"We need emergency medical support."
"And tactical response."
Only static answered.
Lucas frowned.
"They're jamming communications."
Brooks cursed under his breath.
"They planned this."
Outside, the city continued moving as though nothing extraordinary had happened.
People walked past the garage entrance carrying groceries.
Taxi drivers argued with passengers.
Street musicians performed on the corner.
No one realized that beneath their feet, armed men had just fought over evidence capable of destroying one of the country's most powerful organizations.
Lucas looked across the street.
"We can't go back to headquarters."
Brooks nodded.
"They already breached the evidence vault once."
"And now they know exactly what we recovered."
Evelyn looked at the briefcase.
"So where do we go?"
Lucas answered immediately.
"Somewhere they won't expect."
Forty-five minutes later...
Three unmarked vehicles pulled into a deserted warehouse district on the edge of the river.
The building had once belonged to Carter Technologies decades earlier.
Now it sat abandoned.
Dust covered every window.
Broken machinery filled the enormous factory floor.
Brooks looked around.
"Nobody knows about this place?"
Lucas shook his head.
"I bought it at auction six years ago."
Everyone looked at him.
"You own this?"
He nodded.
"I use it as an offline cybersecurity laboratory."
For the first time that day...
Brooks smiled.
"Good."
Inside, hidden behind rusting machinery, a reinforced steel door slid open.
Beyond it lay a completely modern operations center.
Computer servers.
Satellite equipment.
Independent power generators.
Medical supplies.
Everything necessary to disappear.
Evelyn looked around in amazement.
"You built all this?"
Lucas shrugged.
"I investigate people who don't appreciate being investigated."
Brooks quietly muttered,
"Now I understand."
A doctor arrived nearly an hour later.
Not from a hospital.
From Lucas's trusted private network.
She carefully examined Evelyn.
"The baby is stable."
Evelyn finally allowed herself to breathe.
"But..."
The doctor looked concerned.
"Your stress hormones are dangerously elevated."
"You need rest."
Evelyn almost laughed.
"I'm not sure that's possible."
The doctor gently squeezed her shoulder.
"Your child doesn't care about conspiracies."
"He cares whether his mother survives."
Those words stayed with Evelyn long after the examination ended.
Later that night...
The rescued evidence covered a large conference table.
Lucas carefully opened one of William Carter's financial ledgers.
Each page contained handwritten notes beside official accounting records.
One sentence immediately caught his attention.
The money itself is poisoned.
Evelyn frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Lucas turned several pages.
Every major acquisition made by Carter Technologies during its early years had been financed through offshore companies secretly controlled by Project Guardian.
Her father's handwritten notes explained everything.
"I believed I was accepting legitimate investment."
"The profits built our success."
"By the time I learned the truth, thousands depended on the company."
"Leaving meant destroying innocent employees."
Evelyn slowly lowered herself into a chair.
"My father..."
Lucas nodded sadly.
"He wasn't innocent."
Brooks looked up.
"But he wasn't the mastermind either."
Lucas continued reading.
"He spent years trying to separate the company from Guardian's money."
Evelyn whispered,
"And failed."
The realization crushed her.
Her entire life had been built on stolen wealth.
The scholarships her father funded.
The hospitals carrying the Carter name.
The luxurious home where she grew up.
Even the company she had spent years expanding.
Every success was connected to money stained by corruption.
Tears filled her eyes.
"What if none of it belongs to me?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Because it was a question none of them could honestly answer.
A young detective entered carrying a tablet.
"You should see this."
He placed it before Evelyn.
News channels filled the screen.
Her face appeared everywhere.
But the headlines had changed.
CARTER EMPIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION
DID EVELYN CARTER KNOW THE TRUTH?
BILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD ALLEGATIONS EMERGE
Evelyn stared silently.
Only hours earlier she had been the victim.
Now...
She was becoming the suspect.
Lucas took the tablet.
"They're moving fast."
Brooks nodded.
"Someone leaked selected information."
"Not everything."
Lucas pointed toward the headlines.
"They're framing the story."
He scrolled further.
Anonymous sources.
Unnamed officials.
Leaked financial documents.
Every article suggested that Evelyn had inherited and continued her father's illegal empire.
None mentioned the evidence proving he had tried to expose it.
Someone was rewriting history in real time.
Another alert appeared.
Emergency Press Conference
Senator Victor Hale stepped behind a podium surrounded by American flags.
His expression radiated concern.
"My heart goes out to Ms. Evelyn Carter."
He paused dramatically.
"No citizen deserves public humiliation."
Evelyn stared at the screen in disbelief.
The man her father had identified as the leader of Project Guardian looked directly into the cameras.
"However..."
His tone shifted.
"Recent evidence suggests Carter Technologies may have participated in extensive international financial misconduct."
He carefully avoided accusing Evelyn directly.
Instead, he planted doubt.
"The Department of Justice will investigate every individual involved."
Lucas muted the television.
"He just declared war."
Brooks looked toward Evelyn.
"You need to disappear."
She shook her head.
"If I hide..."
"They'll say I ran."
"If you stay..."
"They'll know exactly where to find you."
Before anyone could continue—
One of Lucas's computer monitors suddenly beeped.
A surveillance camera outside the warehouse had detected movement.
Lucas enlarged the image.
A black SUV rolled slowly past the abandoned factory.
Then another.
Then a third.
No headlights.
No license plates.
Brooks immediately drew his weapon.
"They found us."
The room shifted into controlled chaos.
Detectives secured entrances.
Lights inside the warehouse were switched off.
Lucas activated hidden security cameras around the building.
The convoy stopped two hundred meters away.
No one exited.
"They're watching," Brooks whispered.
Lucas zoomed further.
One of the SUVs displayed a familiar silver emblem.
The phoenix.
Roman numeral XIII.
Project Guardian.
Then...
One vehicle door opened.
A lone woman stepped onto the empty street.
She wore a bright red coat.
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"The woman from outside my office."
She stood beneath a streetlight without moving.
Then she slowly raised one hand.
Not in greeting.
In warning.
Lucas zoomed the camera.
The woman pointed toward the warehouse roof.
Then toward the river.
Before calmly walking away.
Brooks frowned.
"What is she trying to say?"
Lucas's expression suddenly changed.
"Oh no."
He immediately switched to the rooftop surveillance feed.
Nothing.
Then...
A tiny blinking red light.
Attached beside one of the ventilation units.
His blood ran cold.
"Everyone get down!"
The explosion tore through the rooftop a heartbeat later.
Steel beams screamed.
Concrete rained from the ceiling.
The lights went out once again.
Fire alarms erupted throughout the warehouse.
Smoke filled the operations center.
Lucas grabbed the leather briefcase.
Brooks covered Evelyn with his own body as debris crashed around them.
Above the roar of collapsing steel...
A second sound echoed through the smoke.
Slow.
Steady.
Footsteps.
Someone wasn't running away from the explosion.
Someone was walking toward them.
And through the haze...
A familiar voice quietly said,
"Evelyn..."
She froze.
It was Adrian.
But when the smoke cleared...
He wasn't alone.
May you like
Standing behind him...
Was Senator Victor Hale himself.
