CHAPTER 5 – The Mother Who Knew Everything

CHAPTER 5 – The Mother Who Knew Everything

The emergency lights painted the forensic laboratory in a ghostly red glow.

Every face looked pale.

Every shadow seemed alive.

Officer Daniel Brooks reacted instantly.

"Seal every exit!"

His voice echoed through the hallway as officers rushed in every direction.

"No one leaves this building."

"No one comes in."

The young officer who had reported the break-in was still trying to catch his breath.

"They knew exactly where the evidence vault was."

"They bypassed three locked doors."

"They ignored cash, narcotics, firearms..."

He swallowed.

"They went straight for this case."

Lucas Bennett was already typing commands into the isolated workstation.

"They weren't trying to steal evidence."

He glanced toward the flash drive.

"They were trying to confirm whether it had been opened."

Brooks frowned.

"Can they tell?"

Lucas didn't look up.

"If Project Guardian built this system..."

"They already know."

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Somewhere out there, someone had just learned that Evelyn Carter had unlocked her father's final message.

The countdown had begun.

Two officers escorted Evelyn into a secure interview room.

She wrapped both arms around herself.

Not because she was cold.

Because everything she believed about her life had collapsed within a single day.

Her wedding.

Her husband.

Her father.

Nothing was what it had seemed.

A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts.

Officer Brooks stepped inside.

"There's someone asking to see you."

Evelyn frowned.

"Who?"

He hesitated.

"Your mother."

Margaret Carter entered slowly.

She looked immaculate despite the late hour.

Her dark blue coat was perfectly buttoned.

Not a strand of silver hair was out of place.

Only her eyes betrayed exhaustion.

The moment she saw Evelyn, she hurried forward.

"My baby..."

She reached out.

Evelyn instinctively stepped back.

Margaret froze.

The distance between them hurt more than any words could.

"You knew."

Her daughter's voice was barely above a whisper.

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I was hoping..."

"No."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Don't tell me what you hoped."

"Tell me the truth."

For several long seconds, neither woman spoke.

Finally Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

"I knew."

The words landed with unbearable weight.

Evelyn stared at her mother.

"You knew people murdered Dad?"

"Yes."

"You knew someone had been watching me since I was six?"

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

"You knew Adrian wasn't an accident?"

Another pause.

"Yes."

Evelyn felt her knees weaken.

She grabbed the back of a chair to steady herself.

"You let me marry him."

Margaret looked down.

"I let you fall in love with him."

The difference offered no comfort.

Officer Brooks quietly closed the interview room door.

Lucas remained outside, giving them privacy.

Inside, the silence became suffocating.

Margaret slowly sat down.

"I've lived with this for sixteen years."

"So have I."

"No."

Margaret shook her head.

"You've lived with lies."

"I've lived with fear."

Evelyn's voice grew sharper.

"Then explain."

Margaret took a deep breath.

"The night your father died..."

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"Murder usually isn't."

Margaret accepted the cruelty.

"William knew they were coming."

"He called me twenty-three minutes before his accident."

Evelyn's heart stopped.

"He called you?"

Margaret nodded.

"He told me to take you and disappear."

"What?"

"He said..."

Her voice broke.

"'They're done negotiating.'"

Tears rolled silently down Margaret's face.

"I begged him to come home."

"He refused."

"Why?"

"Because he still believed he could stop them."

Margaret reached into her purse.

Officer Brooks had already searched it.

Now she carefully removed a worn leather wallet.

From inside, she unfolded an old photograph.

She slid it across the table.

Evelyn picked it up.

Her breath caught.

It showed her father standing beside another young man.

Both were smiling.

Both looked no older than thirty.

The second man looked strangely familiar.

"Who is this?"

Margaret looked directly at the photograph.

"Jonathan Vale."

Evelyn frowned.

"Vale?"

Margaret nodded.

"Adrian's father."

The room went completely still.

"No..."

Evelyn whispered.

"My father knew Richard?"

Margaret shook her head.

"Not Richard."

"Jonathan."

"Richard's older brother."

Confusion spread across Evelyn's face.

"I don't understand."

"Very few people do."

Margaret gently touched the photograph.

"Your father and Jonathan built Carter Technologies together."

"What?"

"They were best friends."

The revelation hit like a thunderbolt.

"But Adrian said—"

"I know what Adrian said."

Margaret interrupted softly.

"But he doesn't know the whole story."

She continued.

"Jonathan discovered what Project Guardian truly was before your father did."

"He wanted to expose them immediately."

"And Dad?"

"He wanted proof first."

Margaret sighed.

"They argued."

"They separated."

"A week later..."

She looked away.

"Jonathan disappeared."

"Disappeared?"

"They found his car."

"No body."

"No witnesses."

"Nothing."

Evelyn slowly remembered something.

"Adrian told me his father introduced him to Guardian."

Margaret nodded.

"He believed Richard was his father."

"What do you mean?"

Margaret hesitated.

Then quietly answered.

"Jonathan was Adrian's biological father."

The room fell silent.

"Richard raised him."

Evelyn blinked.

"Why?"

"Because Jonathan never came home."

Outside the interview room, Lucas frowned.

He looked toward Brooks.

"Something about this doesn't fit."

Brooks nodded.

"What?"

"If Jonathan disappeared before William died..."

Lucas folded his arms.

"Then someone deliberately rewrote history."

Inside the room, Margaret continued.

"Richard told Adrian that Jonathan abandoned the family."

"But that wasn't true."

"He wanted Adrian to hate William."

Evelyn slowly understood.

"So Adrian grew up believing my father betrayed his."

Margaret nodded sadly.

"Exactly."

"They turned two victims into enemies."

Evelyn stared at the photograph again.

How many lies had shaped Adrian's life?

How many lies had shaped hers?

She hated him.

She knew she did.

But for the first time...

She also pitied him.

Margaret seemed to notice the change.

"Don't misunderstand me."

"I'm not defending what Adrian did."

"He made terrible choices."

"But someone spent decades making sure those choices became inevitable."

A knock interrupted them.

Officer Brooks entered quickly.

"We've identified the intruder."

Lucas followed behind him carrying a tablet.

"Not exactly."

Brooks corrected.

"We identified the vehicle."

He placed several surveillance photographs on the table.

A black SUV leaving police headquarters minutes earlier.

No license plates.

Tinted windows.

Professional.

Lucas enlarged one image.

"There."

Near the driver's side mirror.

A small silver emblem.

Margaret's face instantly lost all color.

"No..."

Brooks noticed immediately.

"You recognize it."

She whispered,

"I hoped I'd never see that symbol again."

"What is it?"

Margaret slowly raised trembling fingers toward the screen.

"A phoenix."

Lucas zoomed in further.

The silver emblem became unmistakable.

Its wings surrounded a circle.

Inside the circle...

The Roman numeral XIII.

Lucas inhaled sharply.

"I've seen this."

Brooks turned.

"Where?"

"In an intelligence briefing years ago."

"What does it mean?"

Lucas looked toward Margaret.

She answered before he could.

"It's the Inner Circle."

"The thirteen people who actually control Project Guardian."

The room fell silent.

Brooks frowned.

"You're certain?"

Margaret nodded.

"William showed me their symbol the week before he died."

She looked directly at Evelyn.

"He said if you ever saw it..."

"You were already in danger."

Evelyn felt a cold shiver run through her body.

"My father knew all this..."

"And still left me here?"

Margaret's expression shattered.

"He didn't leave you."

"He sacrificed himself."

"So you could have sixteen years they couldn't steal."

Tears finally streamed down Evelyn's face.

She had spent half her life believing her father died in a tragic accident.

Now she understood.

Every birthday.

Every graduation.

Every promotion.

Every happy memory...

Had been bought with his life.

Lucas suddenly looked toward the laboratory door.

Something had caught his attention.

A technician hurried inside.

"Mr. Bennett."

"What is it?"

"The flash drive."

Lucas frowned.

"What about it?"

The technician looked visibly shaken.

"It just unlocked another file."

"No one touched it."

"No one entered any password."

Brooks' eyes narrowed.

"What file?"

The technician swallowed hard.

"It's labeled..."

He looked directly at Evelyn.

"'Surveillance Log: Subject Evelyn Carter.'"

A heavy silence filled the room.

"How many files?"

The technician's answer made everyone's blood run cold.

"Three thousand, six hundred and forty-two."

Lucas slowly removed his glasses.

His voice was almost a whisper.

"They didn't start watching you when you were six."

He looked directly at Evelyn.

May you like

"They watched you..."

"...from the day you were born."
