CHAPTER 6 – The Boardroom Trap

CHAPTER 6 – The Boardroom Trap
Morning arrived without bringing peace.
The sun rose over the city as if nothing extraordinary had happened.
Traffic filled the streets.
Office workers hurried toward glass towers.
Coffee shops opened.
Newsstands displayed fresh headlines.
But on every television screen inside every café, airport, and hotel lobby, one story dominated the news.
PREGNANT BRIDE FRAMED AT HER OWN WEDDING
SECURITY FOOTAGE EXPOSES BILLIONAIRE FAMILY
WHO IS PROJECT GUARDIAN?
Videos from the ballroom had spread across every social media platform overnight.
Millions had watched Evelyn Carter being searched in front of hundreds of wedding guests.
Millions had also watched the security footage proving her innocence.
Public sympathy was pouring in.
But Project Guardian had no intention of allowing that sympathy to last.
Evelyn had slept less than two hours.
She stood near the window of the police safe house assigned to her, watching the city wake beneath a gray sky.
Her phone, which had been returned after being examined by investigators, vibrated constantly.
More than three hundred missed calls.
Thousands of unread messages.
Reporters.
Friends.
Business partners.
Strangers.
She ignored them all.
The only message she opened came from the chairman of Carter Technologies' Board of Directors.
Emergency Board Meeting.
10:00 A.M. Attendance Required.
No explanation.
No expression of concern.
Just a meeting.
Lucas read the message over her shoulder.
"I don't like it."
Officer Brooks nodded.
"Neither do I."
"They're moving too quickly."
Evelyn looked away from the phone.
"They've never called an emergency meeting without telling me why."
Lucas folded his arms.
"Which means they already know exactly what they want."
Three hours later...
Three black police vehicles stopped outside Carter Technologies Headquarters.
The sixty-story tower of glass and steel reflected the cloudy morning sky.
For sixteen years, this building had represented her father's dream.
Today...
It felt like enemy territory.
Television crews crowded the entrance.
Camera flashes exploded the moment Evelyn stepped from the vehicle.
"Ms. Carter!"
"Did your husband betray you?"
"Is your company involved with Project Guardian?"
"Are the allegations true?"
Officer Brooks and two detectives escorted her through the crowd without answering a single question.
Inside the lobby, something immediately felt wrong.
Employees who normally greeted her warmly now looked away.
Some whispered.
Others stopped talking altogether as she walked past.
The atmosphere was heavy.
Fear had already arrived before she had.
The executive boardroom occupied the entire top floor.
A long walnut table stretched beneath floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
Ten directors were already seated.
No one smiled.
At the head of the table sat Chairman Leonard Whitmore.
Seventy years old.
Impeccably dressed.
Trusted by her father for decades.
Or so she had always believed.
He stood politely.
"Ms. Carter."
His tone was formal.
Not warm.
Not cold.
Merely distant.
Evelyn took her seat.
"You requested this meeting."
Whitmore nodded.
"We did."
He looked around the table.
"As everyone knows, yesterday's unfortunate incident has created significant concern among investors."
"Unfortunate?"
Evelyn repeated quietly.
"I was publicly framed."
Whitmore cleared his throat.
"Yes."
"Very unfortunate."
His careful wording made Lucas, who sat quietly behind Evelyn as an observer, narrow his eyes.
Whitmore slid a thick folder across the table.
"We've received recommendations from independent medical consultants."
Evelyn frowned.
"What consultants?"
"They examined publicly available footage from yesterday."
Officer Brooks, seated near the wall, looked up sharply.
"They examined videos on the internet?"
Whitmore ignored him.
"The consultants believe the stress of pregnancy has severely affected your judgment."
Silence filled the room.
Evelyn slowly opened the folder.
Inside were psychiatric evaluations.
Medical opinions.
Psychological assessments.
Every page carried a different doctor's signature.
The conclusion was identical.
Temporary Executive Incapacity.
Her heartbeat slowed.
Not from fear.
From disbelief.
"You've never met me."
She looked around the room.
"None of these doctors have ever spoken to me."
Director Susan Keller finally spoke.
"They based their conclusions on observable behavior."
"My observable behavior?"
"You appeared emotionally unstable."
"My wedding became a crime scene."
"You shouted."
"I was being framed."
"You cried."
"I was humiliated."
Another director leaned forward.
"The market reacts to confidence."
Lucas couldn't stay silent.
"The market?"
The director shrugged.
"Investors dislike uncertainty."
Lucas laughed once.
It wasn't a pleasant sound.
"A pregnant woman is falsely accused of theft, publicly searched, betrayed by her husband..."
He looked around the room.
"...and your concern is investor confidence?"
No one answered.
Whitmore calmly removed another document.
"The Board has voted."
Evelyn looked at him.
"Voted on what?"
He placed the papers in front of her.
"Pending recovery from emotional trauma..."
"...your executive authority will be temporarily transferred."
Her eyes dropped to the final page.
Interim Chief Executive Officer
Leonard Whitmore
Exactly as her father had warned.
Break her confidence.
Declare her unstable.
Take control.
Lucas leaned toward her.
"Don't sign anything."
She didn't even look at the papers.
Instead, she looked directly at Whitmore.
"My father trusted you."
Whitmore's expression didn't change.
"Your father also trusted many people."
The words carried an edge that hadn't been there before.
For the first time...
His mask slipped.
Officer Brooks stood.
"I need to remind everyone that Ms. Carter is the victim of an active criminal conspiracy."
Whitmore smiled politely.
"And this is a corporate governance issue."
"No."
Brooks answered firmly.
"This looks very much like evidence."
One of the directors scoffed.
"Evidence of what?"
Lucas quietly spoke.
"Coordinated financial fraud."
The room became still.
Whitmore folded his hands.
"Mr. Bennett."
"I understand you've become involved rather unexpectedly."
Lucas smiled faintly.
"Unexpectedly for you."
Whitmore's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly.
"I don't believe we've met."
"We haven't."
Lucas held his gaze.
"But I've spent years studying organizations that use reputational attacks before hostile takeovers."
Several directors exchanged nervous glances.
Lucas continued.
"The pattern is remarkably familiar."
"Public humiliation."
"Questions about mental stability."
"Emergency board intervention."
"Asset transfer."
He looked around the table.
"You're following the script almost perfectly."
No one spoke.
Then something unexpected happened.
A nervous voice came from the far end of the table.
"I..."
Everyone turned.
It was David Chen.
The youngest member of the board.
Only thirty-eight.
Recently appointed.
His hands trembled.
"I didn't know."
Whitmore's face hardened.
"Mr. Chen."
David ignored him.
"When these documents arrived this morning..."
"I thought they'd been prepared after the wedding."
He looked toward Evelyn.
"But..."
He reached into his briefcase.
"...they weren't."
He pulled out another folder.
"I found this by mistake."
Whitmore suddenly stood.
"Sit down."
David didn't.
He placed the folder on the table.
Every page inside bore yesterday's date.
But the timestamp at the bottom of each document read:
8:14 A.M.
More than six hours before the wedding ceremony had begun.
The psychiatric reports had already been written.
The board resolution had already been drafted.
The signatures had already been collected.
Before Evelyn had ever been accused.
Before the ring had "disappeared."
Before the public humiliation.
Officer Brooks slowly picked up the documents.
His face darkened.
"You planned this."
Whitmore remained silent.
Brooks turned another page.
Every director's signature appeared.
Including those who claimed the meeting had been called only that morning.
Lucas looked directly at Whitmore.
"You expected the wedding to succeed."
Whitmore finally smiled.
A slow...
Cold...
Completely unfamiliar smile.
"It was a very efficient plan."
The room froze.
Realizing what he had just admitted, Whitmore's smile disappeared.
Too late.
Officer Brooks had heard every word.
"So you knew."
Whitmore said nothing.
Brooks took one step forward.
"I'll ask again."
"You knew about the plan."
Silence.
The boardroom doors suddenly burst open.
A detective rushed inside.
"Officer Brooks!"
"What is it?"
"We've just finished analyzing the surveillance files from the flash drive."
Lucas immediately looked up.
"Did you find something?"
The detective nodded.
"One file was tagged with today's date."
Evelyn frowned.
"Today's date?"
The detective looked directly at her.
"It wasn't predicting today's meeting."
"It recorded it."
Confusion spread across the room.
"Recorded?"
"Yes."
He held up a tablet.
"The file contains hidden audio."
Lucas took the device.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then voices emerged.
Whitmore's voice.
Clear.
Undeniable.
'Once she's declared emotionally unstable, the board takes control immediately.'
Another voice asked,
'What if the wedding plan fails?'
Whitmore answered without hesitation.
'It won't. Adrian knows his role.'
Every face in the boardroom turned toward the chairman.
But the recording wasn't finished.
A third voice spoke from the speakers.
Calm.
Powerful.
Commanding.
A voice no one in the room recognized.
'If Evelyn Carter refuses to surrender the company...'
A brief pause followed.
Then came the sentence that drained every drop of color from Evelyn's face.
'Terminate both the mother... and the child.'
The room fell into horrified silence.
Her company had never been the ultimate prize.
Neither had her fortune.
Someone wanted to make absolutely certain...
That neither Evelyn...
May you like
Nor her unborn baby...
Would survive long enough to expose the truth.
