CHAPTER 2 – The Flash Drive

CHAPTER 2 – The Flash Drive
The tiny black flash drive looked almost insignificant.
No larger than a person's thumb.
No heavier than a few grams.
Yet every eye in the ballroom was fixed on it.
For several endless seconds, nobody moved.
Even the music that had been softly playing through the ballroom speakers had long since stopped. The silence felt unnatural, as if the room itself was waiting for whatever happened next.
Adrian Vale held the drive tightly between his fingers.
His knuckles had turned white.
Officer Daniel Brooks slowly stepped forward.
"Mr. Vale."
Adrian didn't respond.
"I need you to hand me the flash drive."
His eyes remained on Evelyn.
"If she sees what's inside this before I explain..."
His voice cracked.
"...everything will fall apart."
Evelyn stared at the man she had almost married.
"You already destroyed everything."
Her voice was calm now.
Almost frighteningly calm.
"The only thing left is the truth."
Adrian swallowed hard.
"You don't understand."
"No."
She took one slow step toward him.
"I don't."
"So explain."
He looked around the ballroom.
Hundreds of faces.
Phones still recording.
Police officers.
Security guards.
His own family.
Then he slowly shook his head.
"Not here."
Officer Brooks extended his hand.
"The drive."
Adrian hesitated.
For one terrifying moment, it looked as though he might run again.
Instead...
He carefully placed the flash drive into the officer's palm.
The entire ballroom exhaled.
Officer Brooks immediately handed the drive to another detective.
"Evidence bag."
A forensic technician stepped forward, sealed the flash drive inside a transparent evidence pouch, and attached an identification label.
Lucas Bennett, the cybersecurity consultant who had stopped the remote deletion, watched carefully.
"Don't plug it into anything connected to the internet."
The detective frowned.
"Why?"
Lucas didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the giant ballroom screen where the attempted deletion message had appeared only moments earlier.
"Because whoever tried to erase the security recordings knew exactly where this drive was."
He pointed toward the evidence bag.
"If they realize the drive survived..."
"They'll try again."
Officer Brooks nodded.
"We'll examine it at headquarters."
Lucas shook his head.
"I wouldn't."
Brooks looked surprised.
"You wouldn't?"
Lucas folded his arms.
"If this drive contains what I think it does..."
"It may already be programmed to destroy itself."
The room fell silent again.
Across the ballroom, Richard Vale's expression changed.
Only for a split second.
But Lucas noticed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Lucas walked directly toward him.
"You've seen this before."
Richard forced a smile.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"You recognized the drive."
"I recognized a piece of plastic."
Lucas didn't smile.
"No."
"You recognized the encryption."
Richard's face stiffened.
Officer Brooks immediately noticed the exchange.
"You two know each other?"
Richard answered too quickly.
"No."
Lucas calmly replied,
"We've never met."
"But I've investigated companies owned by the Vale family."
The atmosphere grew even heavier.
Meanwhile...
Evelyn sat quietly in one of the ballroom chairs.
The wedding dress spread around her like a broken promise.
One hand rested protectively over her stomach.
The baby moved again.
She closed her eyes.
Everything hurt.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
She had spent nearly two years believing Adrian loved her.
Their first vacation.
Their engagement.
The nights they spent planning the nursery.
The names they debated for the baby.
Every memory now felt contaminated.
She remembered Adrian kissing her forehead only that morning.
"You'll be the most beautiful bride."
Now she wondered whether he had been thinking about the trap all along.
A warm hand touched her shoulder.
She looked up.
It was Officer Brooks.
"Are you alright?"
She almost laughed.
"What does that question even mean anymore?"
He understood.
"You should go to the hospital."
"I'm pregnant."
"Exactly."
"My doctor said stress could..."
Her voice disappeared.
Brooks nodded.
"We've already called an ambulance."
"I'm not leaving."
"You need medical attention."
"So does the truth."
Near the ballroom entrance...
Olivia finally exploded.
"This is ridiculous!"
She pointed directly at Adrian.
"This wasn't my idea!"
Every head turned.
Richard shouted,
"Olivia!"
But she ignored him.
"He planned everything!"
Mrs. Vale slapped her across the face.
The sharp crack echoed across the ballroom.
Several guests gasped.
Olivia stared at her mother in disbelief.
"You hit me?"
Mrs. Vale whispered through clenched teeth.
"You foolish girl."
Olivia slowly touched her burning cheek.
Then something inside her broke.
"No."
She looked at the police.
"I'm done protecting them."
Richard's face turned ghostly white.
"Don't."
She ignored him.
"It started six months ago."
Officer Brooks immediately took out his notebook.
"What started?"
Olivia pointed toward Adrian.
"He told us Evelyn couldn't be allowed to control Carter Technologies."
The words struck Evelyn like lightning.
Carter Technologies.
Her father's company.
The company she had inherited after his death.
She looked at Adrian.
His face remained expressionless.
Too expressionless.
Almost as though he had expected this moment.
"What do you mean she couldn't control it?" Brooks asked.
Olivia hesitated.
"I don't know everything."
"What do you know?"
"They kept saying she would sign eventually."
"Sign what?"
"I never saw the papers."
Richard suddenly stepped forward.
"My daughter is confused."
Officer Brooks immediately raised a hand.
"Stay where you are."
Richard ignored him.
"This has gone far enough."
"It hasn't even begun."
The voice came from Lucas.
Everyone turned.
Lucas was staring at the evidence bag containing the flash drive.
"I think the drive answers those questions."
Forty minutes later...
The ballroom had become an active crime scene.
Guests were escorted outside one by one.
Evidence markers covered the floor.
Photographers documented everything.
The wedding cake still stood untouched beneath glittering lights.
Its white frosting had begun to melt.
Someone quietly remarked,
"It looks like the whole marriage melted with it."
Nobody laughed.
Outside...
Rain had begun to fall.
Police vehicles lined the entrance.
News vans arrived one after another.
Reporters gathered behind security barriers.
Microphones.
Camera crews.
Satellite trucks.
Someone had leaked the story.
Within minutes...
Every local news station was broadcasting live.
PREGNANT BRIDE FRAMED AT WEDDING
GROOM'S FAMILY ACCUSED OF CONSPIRACY
SECURITY FOOTAGE SHOCKS GUESTS
Evelyn glanced toward the cameras.
"By tomorrow..."
She whispered.
"The whole country will know."
Officer Brooks answered honestly.
"Probably tonight."
She closed her eyes.
"My child will grow up seeing this."
Inside one of the hotel's conference rooms...
Lucas placed the sealed evidence bag on a wooden table.
Officer Brooks stood beside him.
Two digital forensic specialists entered carrying isolated examination equipment.
No internet.
No wireless signals.
No external connections.
Lucas approved.
"Good."
One technician smiled.
"We've done this before."
Lucas quietly replied,
"I hope not."
The technician frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Lucas pointed toward the flash drive.
"If this contains military-grade encryption..."
"One mistake could wipe every file forever."
The room became very quiet.
Brooks looked at Adrian, who sat handcuffed across the room.
"You want to tell us what's inside?"
Adrian looked exhausted.
"You won't believe me."
"Try us."
He slowly leaned back.
"There are three folders."
Lucas's eyes narrowed.
Adrian continued.
"The first contains financial records."
"The second contains surveillance files."
Brooks asked,
"And the third?"
For several seconds...
Adrian said nothing.
Then he whispered,
"Deaths."
No one spoke.
"The third folder documents every person who died because of Project Guardian."
Lucas froze.
The name hit him immediately.
Project Guardian.
He had heard it once before.
Years ago.
A classified investigation.
Officially...
It had never existed.
Lucas looked directly into Adrian's eyes.
"Who gave you that drive?"
Adrian answered without hesitation.
"My father."
Richard Vale immediately shouted,
"He's lying!"
Adrian slowly turned toward him.
"No."
"I'm finally telling the truth."
Richard lunged from his chair.
Two officers restrained him before he could reach his son.
"You ungrateful idiot!"
"You have no idea what you've done!"
Adrian quietly replied,
"I know exactly what I've done."
The forensic specialist carefully inserted the flash drive into the isolated examination computer.
Nothing happened.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Twenty.
Then...
A black screen appeared.
One line of white text slowly typed itself across the monitor.
IDENTITY REQUIRED
The technician frowned.
"What kind of login is this?"
He pressed a key.
Nothing.
Another.
Still nothing.
Lucas leaned closer.
"Don't touch it."
The screen changed by itself.
AUTHORIZED USERS: 1
Everyone stared.
Then another line appeared.
WAITING FOR EVELYN CARTER
Silence swallowed the room.
Officer Brooks looked toward Evelyn.
"It knows your name."
A chill ran down her spine.
"I've never seen that drive before."
Lucas believed her.
Which made it even more disturbing.
The computer beeped once.
Another message appeared.
BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION REQUIRED
Evelyn took an uneasy step backward.
"What does that mean?"
Lucas's expression darkened.
"It means..."
He looked from the screen...
...to Adrian...
...then back to Evelyn.
"Whoever created this drive expected only you to open it."
Adrian slowly lowered his head.
"And that's exactly why they wanted control over you."
The room was frozen by the implication.
The missing ring...
The public humiliation...
The forged accusations...
None of them had ever been the true objective.
They had only been the first move in a much larger game.
Somewhere beyond the hotel walls...
Someone was almost certainly waiting to learn whether Evelyn Carter had opened the drive.
May you like
Because once she did...
There would be no turning back.
