CHAPTER 12 – The Broadcast

CHAPTER 12 – The Broadcast
The warehouse fell into absolute silence.
Every weapon.
Every pair of eyes.
Every heartbeat.
Turned toward Adrian.
For a moment, even he seemed unable to breathe.
"What...?"
His voice cracked.
"No."
Victor Hale watched him calmly.
"I warned you this day would come."
Brooks immediately shifted his pistol toward Adrian.
"Don't move."
Adrian slowly raised both hands.
"I don't know what he's talking about."
Lucas didn't take his eyes off Adrian.
"Neither do I."
"But I intend to find out."
The countdown on the shattered communication device continued.
00:09:31
Every second sounded louder than the last.
Evelyn stared at the man she had loved.
The man who had betrayed her.
The man who had taken a bullet for her.
The man her father had once trusted.
And now...
The man being accused of leading the very organization that had destroyed both of their families.
"No..."
She whispered.
"You told me everything."
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
"I told you everything I remembered."
Those final words made Lucas freeze.
"Remembered?"
Adrian frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Lucas stepped closer.
"You didn't say 'everything I knew.'"
"You said 'everything I remembered.'"
Adrian looked confused.
"I..."
He stopped speaking.
Something in his expression changed.
Victor Hale smiled faintly.
"There it is."
Brooks snapped toward him.
"What are you talking about?"
Hale never looked away from Adrian.
"The conditioning."
Lucas felt a chill run through him.
"What conditioning?"
Hale answered quietly.
"When Adrian was nineteen..."
"We erased part of his memory."
The warehouse exploded with disbelief.
Adrian staggered backward.
"No..."
Hale nodded.
"You volunteered."
"I would never—"
"You didn't know what you were volunteering for."
Lucas immediately understood.
"Memory suppression."
Hale inclined his head.
"We called it compartmentalization."
He spoke as though discussing ordinary business.
"Certain information became inaccessible until specific conditions were met."
Brooks stared in disbelief.
"You're saying you brainwashed him?"
"We protected our assets."
Adrian suddenly pressed both hands against his head.
Fragments.
Voices.
Images.
They crashed into him without warning.
A dark conference room.
Thirteen empty chairs.
A silver phoenix engraved into polished black marble.
Someone placing a hand on his shoulder.
A voice saying—
'One day you will inherit everything.'
He gasped.
"What..."
Another image.
A document.
His own signature.
A code phrase.
A woman's voice.
'The Chairman serves only until the Heir awakens.'
His breathing became erratic.
Evelyn instinctively stepped toward him.
"Adrian..."
Lucas immediately caught her arm.
"Don't."
"He could be dangerous."
She looked at Adrian's face.
He wasn't dangerous.
He was terrified.
The countdown reached:
00:07:42
Lucas picked up the damaged receiver.
"It's waiting for something."
Brooks frowned.
"For what?"
Lucas examined the circuitry.
"This isn't a bomb trigger."
"It's a synchronization device."
"Synchronization?"
"It activates at the same time as another system."
Before anyone could ask another question—
Every monitor inside Lucas's operations center suddenly powered on.
None of them were connected to the internet.
None should have been functioning.
Yet every screen displayed the same image.
A black background.
A silver phoenix.
Roman numeral XIII.
Then—
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Mechanical.
"Global transmission beginning."
Lucas whispered,
"Impossible."
The screens changed again.
A live satellite feed appeared.
News channels.
Financial markets.
Government offices.
Every screen around the world had apparently been interrupted.
The same message appeared simultaneously.
PROJECT GUARDIAN
FINAL CHARTER ACTIVATION
Brooks stared.
"What have they done?"
Lucas looked horrified.
"They've hijacked international broadcast satellites."
A female presenter appeared on-screen.
She wore no jewelry.
No identifying insignia.
Only a plain gray suit.
Her face remained expressionless.
"Good evening."
"If you are watching this..."
"The Guardian Charter has entered its final succession protocol."
Millions of people around the world unknowingly became witnesses.
The woman continued.
"For over seventy years..."
"Project Guardian has secretly coordinated political stability, financial recovery, and international influence."
Victor Hale laughed softly.
"They're actually doing it."
Lucas looked at him.
"They're exposing themselves?"
"No."
Hale answered.
"They're replacing themselves."
The presenter continued speaking.
"Twelve current trustees have unanimously transferred operational authority."
Evelyn whispered,
"Transferred to who?"
The answer arrived instantly.
"The Thirteenth Chair."
Every monitor displayed a single photograph.
Adrian.
The warehouse became silent again.
Brooks looked toward him.
Adrian looked even more shocked than anyone else.
"I didn't know."
Lucas believed him.
His expression wasn't guilt.
It was horror.
The presenter continued.
"The designated successor has unknowingly completed all eligibility requirements."
Lucas immediately realized the significance.
"The marriage."
Evelyn turned toward him.
"What?"
Lucas spoke rapidly.
"The founding charter."
"It probably required bloodline reunification."
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
"If William and Jonathan were brothers..."
"Then their descendants carried separate inheritance rights."
He looked at Adrian.
"And your marriage reunited both family lines."
The horrifying truth settled over everyone.
The wedding hadn't simply been a financial trap.
It had completed an ancient legal requirement.
Adrian whispered,
"My God..."
Victor Hale nodded.
"Now you understand."
"You were never meant to become Chairman."
"You were meant to become the key."
The countdown reached:
00:04:19
Suddenly, another window opened on every screen.
A digital archive.
Thousands of classified files.
Bank accounts.
Government contracts.
Secret recordings.
The presenter calmly announced—
"In accordance with Founder William Ashcroft's original charter..."
"All Guardian records are now scheduled for automatic public release."
Lucas froze.
"Wait..."
Brooks looked at him.
"What?"
Lucas pointed toward the screen.
"This isn't Guardian releasing information."
He enlarged the original coding sequence.
His eyes widened.
"This program wasn't written by Guardian."
"Who wrote it?"
Lucas smiled for the first time in hours.
"William Carter."
Victor Hale's confidence disappeared.
"No."
Lucas laughed.
"He built a dead man's switch."
Hale rushed toward the communication device.
Brooks tackled him to the ground.
Detectives restrained him.
Hale struggled violently for the first time.
"Stop the transmission!"
Lucas shook his head.
"You can't."
"It's already running."
The presenter continued.
"If this broadcast has begun..."
"Then William Carter is dead."
Evelyn felt tears welling again.
Her father's voice suddenly replaced the presenter.
Recorded sixteen years earlier.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
"My name is William Carter."
"If you're hearing this..."
"I failed."
The warehouse stood frozen.
"So I leave the truth to my daughter."
Every screen displayed Evelyn's childhood photograph.
"My greatest regret..."
"...was believing silence could protect the people I loved."
"I was wrong."
"Silence protects only evil."
Outside...
Across the country...
Televisions changed channels automatically.
Restaurants.
Airports.
Hospitals.
Courtrooms.
Police stations.
Millions watched William Carter's confession.
The files began uploading publicly.
Financial records.
Hidden payments.
Murder investigations.
International corruption.
The secrets Guardian had hidden for decades flooded into the open.
Lucas suddenly noticed something alarming.
"The upload speed..."
Brooks looked over.
"What?"
"It's slowing."
Victor Hale smiled despite the handcuffs.
"They found the server."
Lucas's expression hardened.
"There's another data center."
Hale nodded.
"Thirty years underground."
"The broadcast won't survive another three minutes."
The countdown now read:
00:02:41
If the servers were destroyed...
Everything William Carter had protected with his life would vanish forever.
Then Adrian slowly looked up.
His face had changed.
Not because another memory had returned.
Because he finally remembered one sentence.
A sentence buried beneath years of conditioning.
He looked directly at Evelyn.
"I know where the original server is."
Lucas stepped forward.
"Where?"
Adrian answered with complete certainty.
"My father hid it..."
"...beneath the old Carter family estate."
The room fell silent.
Evelyn's eyes widened.
That estate had burned to the ground...
Sixteen years earlier.
May you like
Or at least...
Everyone had been told it had.
