CHAPTER 4 – Her Father's Last Message

CHAPTER 4 – Her Father's Last Message

Rain hammered against the windows of the police headquarters long after midnight.

The city outside had gone quiet, but inside the Digital Forensics Division, no one had left.

Coffee cups littered every desk.

Computer monitors glowed through the darkness.

Every investigator understood that whatever was hidden inside the flash drive had already destroyed one wedding.

It might also expose crimes reaching back decades.

Evelyn sat alone in a small observation room overlooking the forensic lab.

The wedding dress was gone.

A police officer had brought her a simple gray sweatshirt and loose sweatpants from a nearby clothing store after her doctor insisted she change out of the heavy gown.

The doctor had also examined her.

"The baby is fine," she had said gently.

"But you are under severe emotional stress."

Evelyn had nodded without really listening.

Fine.

The baby was fine.

She repeated those words silently.

Because almost nothing else in her life was.

A paper cup of untouched tea rested beside her.

She hadn't eaten since breakfast.

She wasn't hungry.

She couldn't stop replaying the wedding in her mind.

The whispers.

The accusations.

Adrian's silence.

Then his confession.

Our first meeting wasn't an accident.

Those six words refused to leave her.

A soft knock came at the door.

Lucas Bennett stepped inside.

"You should try to rest."

She looked up with tired eyes.

"Can people rest after learning their entire life was manipulated?"

Lucas didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he sat across from her.

"I've investigated cybercrime for nearly fifteen years."

"I've seen governments spy on citizens."

"I've seen corporations destroy families."

"I've seen people betray their own children."

He paused.

"But I've never seen anything built like this."

He nodded toward the forensic lab.

"Whoever designed that flash drive expected this exact night."

Evelyn frowned.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

Lucas leaned forward.

"The drive doesn't just store files."

"It recognizes you."

"It waited for you."

"And that means whoever created it knew one day you would need it."

A chill spread through Evelyn.

"My father..."

Lucas nodded slowly.

"I think your father knew he was running out of time."

Inside the laboratory, Officer Daniel Brooks watched the forensic specialists prepare the isolated workstation.

No internet.

No wireless signals.

No outside devices.

Every precaution had been taken.

The lead technician looked at Lucas.

"We're ready."

Lucas glanced toward Evelyn.

"It's your decision."

She took a deep breath.

"If my father left me something..."

"I need to see it."

The technician nodded.

"Please place your right hand on the scanner."

A small biometric reader slid out from beneath the monitor.

Evelyn hesitated only a moment before placing her palm against the glass.

A green light swept slowly across her hand.

The computer remained silent.

Then another message appeared.

PALM VERIFIED

A second scanner emerged.

RETINAL IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED

Officer Brooks raised an eyebrow.

"This is military-grade."

Lucas quietly corrected him.

"No."

"It's beyond military."

Evelyn leaned toward the scanner.

A thin blue beam passed across her eyes.

Three long seconds passed.

Then—

IDENTITY CONFIRMED

Everyone in the room held their breath.

The monitor went black.

For several seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then a single video file appeared.

Its title read:

FOR MY DAUGHTER

Evelyn stopped breathing.

The technician clicked the file.

Static flickered across the screen.

Then an image slowly came into focus.

A familiar face smiled gently.

Her father.

William Carter.

His hair showed more gray than she remembered.

His eyes looked tired.

But his smile...

It was exactly the same.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"Dad..."

For sixteen years she had watched old family videos trying to remember his voice.

Now he was sitting in front of her as though no time had passed.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I've already failed."

Evelyn felt tears spill down her cheeks.

"I prayed this day would never come."

"But if it has..."

"It means they finally reached you."

The room became completely silent.

William glanced down briefly before continuing.

"Evelyn..."

"I need you to listen carefully."

"You won't have much time."

The recording shifted slightly.

William looked over his shoulder as if checking whether someone was nearby.

"When you were born..."

"I made a promise."

"I would never allow you to inherit my mistakes."

Evelyn frowned.

Mistakes?

William sighed deeply.

"I built Carter Technologies from almost nothing."

"At least..."

"That's what everyone believes."

He looked directly into the camera again.

"The truth is much uglier."

Officer Brooks exchanged a glance with Lucas.

William continued.

"When I was younger..."

"I accepted money from people I believed were legitimate investors."

"They promised rapid expansion."

"International growth."

"Unlimited opportunities."

"I believed them."

He shook his head.

"I was wrong."

"They called themselves Project Guardian."

Lucas's face hardened.

The same name Adrian had spoken.

William continued.

"Guardian wasn't created to protect people."

"It was created to control them."

"They identified companies with valuable technology."

"They financed them."

"And once those companies became successful..."

"They took them."

"Legally."

"Financially."

"Or by force."

Evelyn's heart pounded.

"So that's why..."

William nodded slightly, as though somehow hearing her.

"Yes."

"I eventually realized the organization wasn't investing."

"It was stealing."

"They manipulated governments."

"They controlled judges."

"They bribed investigators."

"And anyone who resisted..."

His voice faltered.

"...disappeared."

Officer Brooks quietly whispered,

"My God."

No one disagreed.

William leaned closer to the camera.

"I tried to leave."

"I believed I could simply resign."

A sad smile crossed his face.

"No one resigns from Guardian."

"They reminded me who truly owned my company."

"My patents."

"My contracts."

"My life."

His eyes suddenly filled with regret.

"And then..."

"They threatened you."

Evelyn froze.

"They showed me photographs."

"You were only six years old."

"You were walking home from school."

The image burned itself into her mind.

Someone had been watching her...

Since childhood.

William swallowed hard.

"They wanted my complete obedience."

"They knew you were my weakness."

Lucas slowly clenched his fists.

"This wasn't surveillance."

"It was grooming."

Officer Brooks looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Lucas answered quietly.

"They were preparing for exactly what's happening now."

William continued.

"I began collecting evidence."

"Quietly."

"For years."

"I copied financial records."

"Contracts."

"Hidden bank accounts."

"Internal communications."

"I stored everything somewhere they could never reach."

He smiled faintly.

"You."

Evelyn blinked.

"What?"

The recording answered.

"They never realized the safest vault wasn't a building."

"It wasn't a bank."

"It was my daughter."

Confusion filled the room.

William continued.

"The biometric encryption inside this drive is linked to your identity."

"They can steal the drive."

"They can steal my computers."

"They can kill me."

"But only you can unlock the truth."

Lucas whispered,

"Incredible..."

William's expression grew serious again.

"If they are trying to force you to sign documents..."

"Never sign."

"If they accuse you publicly..."

"Stay calm."

"If they destroy your reputation..."

"Let them."

"Because reputation can be rebuilt."

"But once they gain legal control..."

"They own everything."

Evelyn suddenly remembered the forged documents found inside Adrian's car.

Power of attorney.

Company ownership.

Medical authority.

Exactly as her father had warned.

He had predicted it.

Years earlier.

William looked directly into the camera.

"There is something else."

"I've hidden copies of everything."

"Not here."

"This flash drive only explains where to find them."

Officer Brooks frowned.

"Where?"

William smiled.

"I knew you'd ask."

He reached into his jacket and held up a small brass key.

"This opens Safety Deposit Box 314."

"First National Trust."

"The box contains ledgers."

"Audio recordings."

"Original contracts."

"Enough evidence to destroy Guardian forever."

Lucas immediately wrote the information down.

Then William's smile slowly disappeared.

"There is one person you must never trust."

Everyone leaned closer.

William looked almost frightened.

"If this person reaches you before the evidence does..."

"You'll lose everything."

The room waited.

William slowly spoke the name.

"Senator Victor Hale."

Officer Brooks frowned.

"The senator?"

Lucas looked equally surprised.

"The anti-corruption reformer?"

William nodded.

"He isn't fighting Guardian."

"He leads it."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Victor Hale.

A nationally respected politician.

A man who built his career exposing financial corruption.

According to William Carter...

He was the architect behind it all.

Suddenly—

The video glitched.

Static flashed across the screen.

The audio distorted.

Lucas looked toward the technician.

"What's happening?"

"I'm not touching anything!"

The monitor flickered violently.

Then red letters appeared across the display.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS ATTEMPT DETECTED

Lucas's face drained of color.

"They found us."

The technician stared at his equipment.

"That's impossible."

"We're offline!"

Another warning appeared.

LOCATION IDENTIFIED

COUNTERMEASURES INITIATED

Every computer in the laboratory suddenly rebooted.

The lights flickered.

An alarm echoed through the building.

Officer Brooks reached for his radio.

"What now?"

Before anyone could answer—

Every light in police headquarters went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

For two terrifying seconds...

No one could see anything.

Then emergency backup lights flickered on.

A young officer burst through the laboratory door.

"Officer Brooks!"

"What happened?"

The officer struggled to catch his breath.

"The power outage wasn't an accident."

Brooks frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The officer looked at everyone in the room before delivering the words that made Evelyn's blood run cold.

"Someone just broke into the evidence vault."

"And the only thing they tried to steal..."

May you like

He looked directly at the flash drive still connected to the forensic workstation.

"...was this case."
