CHAPTER 7 – The Woman in the Red Coat

CHAPTER 7 – The Woman in the Red Coat
The recording ended.
No one in the boardroom moved.
The final sentence echoed through the silence like a death sentence.
"Terminate both the mother... and the child."
Evelyn instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.
Her breathing became shallow.
This was no longer about stolen companies.
No longer about forged documents.
Someone had ordered the death of a pregnant woman.
And her unborn baby.
Officer Daniel Brooks was the first to react.
"Nobody leaves this room."
Two detectives immediately stepped toward Chairman Leonard Whitmore.
Whitmore remained seated, his weathered face betraying no emotion.
"You misunderstand."
Brooks stared at him.
"I don't think I do."
"You heard only part of a conversation."
"I heard enough."
Whitmore folded his hands calmly.
"Then arrest me."
Brooks narrowed his eyes.
"You sound confident."
Whitmore smiled.
"Because confidence and guilt are rarely the same thing."
Within minutes the executive floor became another crime scene.
Every board member surrendered their phones.
Laptops were seized.
Hard drives disconnected.
The directors who had confidently voted to remove Evelyn only moments earlier now looked frightened.
David Chen sat quietly in the corner.
He couldn't stop staring at the forged documents.
"I thought they wanted control of the company."
Lucas Bennett glanced toward him.
"So did everyone else."
David slowly shook his head.
"They were preparing for murder."
His voice trembled.
"I signed those papers."
Lucas placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"You signed under false pretenses."
"I still signed."
The guilt in his voice sounded genuine.
Across the room, Evelyn stood by the windows overlooking the city.
The skyline had always made her feel proud.
Today it looked unfamiliar.
Hostile.
Every building suddenly seemed capable of hiding someone watching her.
Someone waiting.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She ignored it.
It vibrated again.
Then again.
Five times in less than thirty seconds.
Lucas noticed.
"Don't answer."
She nodded.
The phone finally stopped.
A message appeared instead.
LOOK OUTSIDE.
Her heart skipped.
Slowly...
She raised her eyes toward the street below.
Thousands of people hurried through the sidewalks.
Cars crawled through afternoon traffic.
Then she saw her.
Standing alone across the street.
A woman wearing a bright red coat.
She wasn't moving.
She wasn't using a phone.
She wasn't looking at the building.
She was looking directly at Evelyn.
The woman's face was partially hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat.
She appeared to be in her early sixties.
Elegant.
Calm.
Completely out of place among the rushing crowd.
She slowly lifted one gloved hand.
Not waving.
Simply raising it.
Then...
She let something small fall onto the sidewalk.
A key.
Without another glance toward the tower...
She turned.
Walked into the crowd.
And disappeared.
Evelyn frowned.
"What is she doing?"
Lucas had already reached the window.
"Who?"
"The woman in the red coat."
He looked down.
The sidewalk was full of people.
But no red coat.
"Where?"
"She was right there."
Officer Brooks joined them.
"What happened?"
Evelyn pointed.
"There was a woman."
"She dropped something."
Brooks immediately spoke into his radio.
"Ground units, respond to the east entrance."
"Locate a woman approximately sixty years old wearing a bright red coat."
The reply came seconds later.
Negative. No subject located.
It was as if she had vanished.
Twenty minutes later...
A uniformed officer entered the boardroom carrying a small evidence bag.
"We found this."
Inside rested a small brass key.
Old.
Slightly tarnished.
A tiny metal tag hung from its ring.
314
Lucas stared at it.
"Safety Deposit Box 314."
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"My father's video."
Officer Brooks nodded slowly.
"The woman wanted you to find it."
"But who is she?" Evelyn asked.
No one had an answer.
By evening, a police convoy escorted Evelyn, Lucas, Brooks, and two detectives to First National Trust.
The bank had already closed for the day.
Its marble lobby echoed with every footstep.
The manager, after confirming emergency legal authorization, led them downstairs.
Past reinforced steel doors.
Past rows of private vaults.
Until they reached one small compartment.
314
The manager inserted one key.
Evelyn inserted the second.
The heavy lock clicked.
The drawer slid open.
Everyone leaned forward.
Inside was a single leather briefcase.
Nothing else.
No jewelry.
No cash.
No family keepsakes.
Only the briefcase.
Lucas carefully lifted it onto a nearby table.
It wasn't locked.
Evelyn slowly opened the lid.
Inside were neatly organized folders.
Each carried handwritten labels in her father's unmistakable handwriting.
Financial Ledgers
Internal Contracts
Audio Recordings
Guardian Members
Beneath the folders rested a sealed envelope.
Across the front were six simple words.
Only If I Am Gone
Evelyn's hands trembled.
She carefully opened it.
A folded letter waited inside.
My dearest Evelyn,
If this letter has reached you, then the worst has already happened.
I wish I could tell you that exposing the truth would keep you safe.
It won't.
The evidence in this case will destroy powerful people.
Some will lose fortunes.
Some will lose freedom.
Some will lose governments.
That is why they will never stop chasing you.
Tears blurred Evelyn's vision.
She continued reading.
But there is something I never told anyone.
Not even your mother.
Lucas quietly stepped back, allowing her privacy.
She read aloud anyway.
"My daughter..."
Her voice faltered.
"...there was one man inside Guardian who secretly helped me."
Officer Brooks looked up.
"A name?"
Evelyn nodded.
She continued.
Without him, this evidence would never have survived.
You already know him.
Her breathing stopped.
His name is Adrian Vale.
Silence consumed the vault.
"No."
The word escaped Evelyn almost involuntarily.
Lucas reached for the letter.
She swallowed hard.
You will struggle to believe this.
So did I.
When Adrian was a teenager, he discovered what Richard and the Inner Circle truly were.
He secretly contacted me using anonymous channels.
For years he risked his life feeding me information.
Officer Brooks frowned deeply.
"That contradicts everything."
Lucas didn't interrupt.
"Keep going."
Evelyn forced herself to continue.
Eventually they discovered someone was leaking information.
Adrian volunteered to become their inside man.
It was the only way to protect himself while continuing to protect you.
The room fell silent.
Evelyn lowered the letter.
"He lied to me."
Lucas nodded.
"Yes."
"He betrayed me."
"Yes."
She looked up.
"So how can this be true?"
Lucas answered honestly.
"Because both things can be true."
She stared at him.
"He may have begun by protecting you."
Lucas spoke quietly.
"And somewhere along the way..."
"He may have made choices he could never undo."
Brooks opened another folder.
Financial ledgers.
Hundreds of pages.
Offshore transfers.
Fake charities.
Government contracts.
Corporate acquisitions.
Each transaction linked to coded initials.
One column repeated constantly.
VH
Brooks frowned.
"Victor Hale."
Lucas nodded.
"The senator."
Another set of initials appeared beside almost every transfer.
J.V.
Evelyn looked puzzled.
"Jonathan Vale?"
Lucas carefully turned another page.
One handwritten note had been attached by William Carter.
Jonathan never betrayed us.
He was executed after refusing to sign.
Evelyn felt dizzy.
Adrian's biological father hadn't abandoned his family.
He had been murdered.
Just like hers.
Suddenly, Officer Brooks' phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Brooks."
His expression darkened.
"What?"
The room watched him.
"When?"
He listened another few seconds.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
"What happened?" Lucas asked.
Brooks looked directly at Evelyn.
"Someone just broke into police headquarters."
Her stomach tightened.
"The flash drive?"
Brooks nodded once.
"It's gone."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Lucas couldn't believe it.
"Impossible."
"The evidence room was under armed guard."
Brooks' face was grim.
"The guards are alive."
"They never saw anyone."
"No alarms."
"No forced entry."
"No fingerprints."
"Just one empty evidence locker."
He paused.
"And one message."
"What message?"
Brooks reached into his pocket and unfolded a photograph sent from the crime scene.
Written across the empty locker in black marker were seven chilling words:
THE PAST BELONGS TO US.
Lucas stared at the message.
Then something clicked.
He grabbed the folder labeled Audio Recordings and flipped rapidly through its contents.
"What are you looking for?" Evelyn asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he found a cassette tape with another handwritten note from William Carter.
His expression changed instantly.
"What is it?" Brooks demanded.
Lucas held up the tape.
William had written only one sentence on its label.
If they steal the flash drive... they have already lost.
Lucas looked at Evelyn.
A faint smile appeared on his face for the first time that day.
"They took the bait."
Before anyone could ask what he meant...
A deafening explosion shook the entire bank.
The lights went out.
Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.
The vault doors slammed shut automatically.
Emergency sirens erupted throughout the building.
May you like
And somewhere beyond the thick steel walls...
Someone had just declared war.
