Chapter 12 â Desperate Lies

Chapter 12 â Desperate Lies
The countdown echoed through the abandoned opera house.
09:41...
09:40...
Adrian stared at the contract lying inside the briefcase.
On the giant screen, Lily struggled against the ropes binding her to a metal chair.
Her blindfold had been removed.
A single spotlight illuminated the cold warehouse around her.
The man standing before her smiled faintly.
"Hello, Claire."
Lily's heart skipped a beat.
"My name is Lily."
The man chuckled.
"That's the name they gave you."
"But I knew your parents."
The Choice
The Director's voice echoed through the empty theater.
"You have less than ten minutes."
"Sign."
"Or she dies."
Adrian clenched the pen in his hand.
His entire empire...
Every employee...
Every promise he had made...
Balanced against one innocent life.
He whispered,
"There has to be another way."
The Director laughed.
"There never was."
Mercer Refuses to Wait
Outside the opera house, Detective Daniel Mercer ignored Adrian's order to stay away.
Police tactical units quietly surrounded the building.
Mercer studied the blueprints.
"Any sign of Lily?"
A technician shook her head.
"The video feed is live."
"But the location is hidden behind multiple encrypted relays."
Samuel, still weak from his hospital stay, pointed toward the ceiling.
"He's buying time."
Mercer frowned.
"For what?"
Samuel answered,
"To destroy whatever evidence is left."
The Forgotten Recordings
At the same moment, Helen Brooks and Ethan searched the underground Black Vault beneath Sinclair Global.
Although much of it had been damaged by fire, one reinforced cabinet had survived.
Inside were dozens of magnetic tape reels sealed inside fireproof cases.
Each was labeled only with a date.
Helen carefully loaded the oldest tape into an archival recorder.
Static filled the room.
Then voices emerged.
Edward Sinclair.
Charles Whitmore.
And someone else.
A conversation recorded in secret nearly thirty years earlier.
Edward's Betrayal
Edward's voice sounded calm.
"The baby has been switched."
Charles Whitmore replied,
"Good."
"But Samuel Graves suspects something."
Edward answered,
"I'll deal with him."
Then another voice interrupted.
One everyone instantly recognized.
Margaret Ellis.
"I won't let you hurt another child."
Silence followed.
Edward laughed.
"You don't have a choice."
Margaret answered firmly,
"I always have a choice."
The tape ended abruptly.
Helen looked at Ethan.
"Margaret risked everything."
Ethan nodded.
"And no one ever knew."
The Second Recording
They loaded another tape.
This one had been recorded years later.
Edward sounded older.
More tired.
"I can't continue."
Charles Whitmore answered sharply.
"You don't have a choice."
Edward slammed something onto the table.
"I built Sinclair Global."
Charles laughed.
"No."
"You built what I allowed you to build."
Helen and Ethan exchanged shocked glances.
Charles continued.
"Never forget who financed your first factory."
"Who bribed the judges."
"Who erased the hospital records."
"You worked for me."
Edward's voice became almost desperate.
"I want out."
Charles answered with chilling calm.
"Men like us don't retire."
"They disappear."
The recording stopped.
Ethan whispered,
"So Edward..."
"...was trapped too."
A Family Torn Apart
Another tape revealed an even darker truth.
This one had never been intended for anyone else to hear.
Edward was speaking with his wife, Victoria Sinclair.
She was crying.
"You changed our son."
Edward answered quietly,
"I saved our future."
Victoria shouted,
"You stole another mother's child!"
Edward's voice cracked.
"I had no choice."
"You always had a choice!"
A loud slap echoed through the recording.
Then Victoria whispered through tears,
"I'll never forgive you."
The tape ended.
Adrian, listening through a secure connection from the opera house, closed his eyes.
His mother had known.
Not from the beginning.
But she had learned the truth.
And she had spent the rest of her life living beside the man who had destroyed two families.
Lily Remembers
In the warehouse, the mysterious man placed an old cassette player on a wooden crate.
He pressed play.
A familiar lullaby filled the room.
The same melody Grace Carter had sung.
The same song Samuel recognized.
Lily suddenly gasped.
Fragments of memory flooded back.
A woman kneeling beside her.
A silver locket.
Fire.
Someone shouting,
"Take Claire!"
Then...
A raven-shaped ring flashing beneath the lights.
She looked up.
"I've seen that ring before."
The man smiled.
"I know."
"You were only a child."
"But children remember more than adults think."
The Director's Final Lie
Back in the opera house, the countdown reached three minutes.
The Director spoke again.
"I'll make this easy."
A new video appeared on the screen.
It showed Samuel Graves accepting a briefcase full of cash from Edward Sinclair decades earlier.
Adrian stared at it in disbelief.
"No..."
Samuel watched the footage from the tactical command vehicle.
His face went pale.
"I never took that money."
Helen immediately noticed something.
"Pause."
She zoomed in.
The shadow beneath Samuel's shoes pointed in the wrong direction.
The reflection on the car window didn't match the sunlight.
"It was fabricated."
Mercer nodded.
"An advanced deepfake."
The Director wasn't just spreading lies anymore.
He was manufacturing history.
The Hidden Confession
Inside the last surviving fireproof case, Helen discovered one final recording.
Its label simply read:
IF I FAIL
She pressed play.
Edward Sinclair's weary voice filled the vault.
"If anyone is hearing this..."
"...then Charles Whitmore has already betrayed me."
Everyone froze.
Edward continued.
"I kept copies of everything."
"Not because I was innocent."
"Because I knew one day..."
"...someone would need the truth."
A long pause followed.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"The original Genesis Archive was never on Richard's flash drive."
Helen's heartbeat quickened.
"Then where is it?"
Edward answered as though speaking directly to her.
"The only complete archive..."
"...was hidden where Charles would never think to look."
Another pause.
Then...
"Inside the music box belonging to Claire Morgan."
Lily.
The room fell silent.
Mercer's radio suddenly crackled.
"Detective!"
"We've traced Lily's location!"
Mercer grabbed his weapon.
"Where?"
The officer answered breathlessly.
"The old Riverside Clock Factory."
Before Mercer could issue an orderâ
A deafening explosion erupted through the radio.
The transmission dissolved into static.
Adrian looked at the countdown.
00:27
The Director's calm voice echoed one final time.
May you like
"Too late."
