Chapter 4 â The Perfect Betrayal

Chapter 4 â The Perfect Betrayal
Margaret Ellis stared silently at the frozen image on Detective Daniel Mercer's tablet.
Twenty-nine years had passed.
Yet there she was.
Much younger.
Wearing a nurse's uniform.
Holding a newborn baby in her arms.
The room fell into a heavy silence.
Mercer slowly looked up.
"Margaret..."
"Is that you?"
She closed her eyes.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Finally, she whispered,
"Yes."
No one moved.
No one interrupted.
Because everyone sensed the truth was about to change everything.
The Woman in the Video
Margaret gently placed both hands on the table.
"I wasn't stealing the baby."
"I was saving him."
Mercer's eyes narrowed.
"Then start from the beginning."
She took a deep breath.
"Twenty-nine years ago, I worked as a maternity nurse at Saint Catherine Hospital."
"The night Adrian was born..."
"...two baby boys entered the nursery within twelve minutes of each other."
She looked down at the paused video.
"Edward Sinclair arrived after midnight."
"He wasn't there to celebrate."
"He came with lawyers."
"And armed bodyguards."
Mercer remained silent.
"He ordered the babies to be switched."
"And when Samuel Graves tried to stop him..."
"...Edward arranged the laboratory explosion that supposedly killed him."
"So Samuel went into hiding."
Margaret nodded.
"And I took one of the babies before Edward's men could make him disappear."
Adrian's World Collapses
Inside the hidden underground nursery, Adrian struggled to process everything Samuel had revealed.
"So..."
"My entire childhood..."
"My family..."
"My name..."
Samuel answered quietly,
"Were built on a lie."
Adrian turned away.
"My mother..."
"Did she know?"
Samuel's expression softened.
"Victoria Sinclair believed you were her biological son until the day she died."
"Edward deceived everyone."
Adrian clenched his fists.
"He stole someone else's child..."
"And stole another child's future."
Samuel nodded.
"Because he believed bloodlines could be manufactured."
Vanessa Breaks
Meanwhile, at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Vanessa Harrington had spent hours insisting on her innocence.
"My lawyer is coming."
"I won't answer another question."
Detective Mercer entered the interrogation room carrying a folder.
He quietly placed it on the table.
Inside were photographs.
Bank transfers.
Text messages.
Surveillance stills.
Vanessa glanced through them.
Her confidence slowly faded.
Mercer spoke calmly.
"Sophia confessed."
"Richard is talking."
"We recovered the flash drive."
Vanessa looked up sharply.
"The drive?"
Mercer nodded.
"Your secrets aren't worth protecting anymore."
Vanessa tried to laugh.
It sounded hollow.
"You think Richard will save himself?"
Mercer didn't answer.
Instead, he slid one final photograph across the table.
Richard...
Meeting secretly with another woman three months before the wedding.
Vanessa stared at it.
Her hands began to shake.
"Who is she?"
Mercer watched her closely.
"We were hoping you could tell us."
Love Was Never Part of the Plan
Vanessa suddenly burst into bitter laughter.
"So that's it."
She leaned back in her chair.
"I was the fool."
Mercer remained silent.
Vanessa wiped away angry tears.
"I thought Richard loved me."
"I thought we were building a future together."
She looked toward the interrogation room mirror.
"But I was only another pawn."
Mercer quietly asked,
"Tell me everything."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"When I met Richard, he already worked inside Sinclair Global."
"He knew everything about Adrian."
"His habits."
"His business."
"His trust."
"He told me Adrian was weak."
"That together..."
"...we could build something better."
She laughed bitterly.
"I believed him."
The Mastermind
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
"At first..."
"It was just information."
"He asked me to get close to Adrian."
"Attend charity events."
"Accept invitations."
"Make him fall in love."
Mercer frowned.
"The engagement?"
"It was Richard's idea."
"The wedding?"
"Richard."
"The poisoned champagne?"
"Richard."
"The medical proxy documents?"
"Richard."
She looked directly at Mercer.
"I planned terrible things."
"I won't deny that."
"But I never created this conspiracy."
"I simply followed the man who convinced me everyone else deserved to lose."
Mercer leaned forward.
"Why didn't you stop?"
Vanessa answered honestly.
"Because every lie made the next one easier."
Richard's Game
Across the detention center, Richard watched the rain through the bars of his cell.
A young officer approached.
"Vanessa confessed."
Richard smiled faintly.
"Of course she did."
"You don't seem surprised."
"I spent years studying people."
"They're predictable."
The officer frowned.
"You manipulated everyone."
Richard shrugged.
"No."
"They manipulated themselves."
He looked toward the ceiling.
"I simply showed them what they wanted."
"Power."
"Money."
"Revenge."
"They walked the rest of the way on their own."
Sophia's Secret
Sophia requested another interview.
This time, she carried something hidden beneath her jacket.
A small leather notebook.
"I took this from Richard's apartment."
Mercer carefully opened it.
Most pages contained dates.
Meeting locations.
Names.
Then he reached the final pages.
Each contained detailed psychological profiles.
Adrian Sinclair
Vanessa Harrington
Sophia Reynolds
Even...
Lily Carter
Sophia looked horrified.
"He studied all of us."
Mercer continued reading.
Every person's fears.
Weaknesses.
Habits.
Favorite routines.
Everything had been documented.
Richard hadn't simply planned a crime.
He had studied human behavior for years.
Then Mercer turned to the last page.
The title read:
Phase Two
Below it...
Only one sentence.
"If the wedding fails... activate Subject B."
Mercer's heartbeat quickened.
Subject B.
The same code name found on the flash drive.
The mysterious second child.
Adrian Meets Ethan
The following morning...
Detective Mercer located the address listed in the recovered files.
A modest auto repair garage on the edge of the city.
Engines roared inside.
Mechanics worked beneath raised vehicles.
A young man wiped grease from his hands as Adrian stepped through the entrance.
They looked at each other.
Neither spoke.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
The same eyes.
The same jawline.
The same posture.
Except one wore an expensive tailored suit.
The other wore oil-stained coveralls.
The mechanic smiled politely.
"Can I help you?"
Adrian stared at him.
"What did you say your name was?"
"Ethan."
"Ethan Hayes."
Adrian felt his pulse race.
Before he could answer...
A black SUV across the street slowly pulled away from the curb.
Inside...
Another man lowered a pair of binoculars.
He picked up his phone.
"It's happening."
A cold voice answered from the other end.
"Then activate Subject B immediately."
The line went dead.
Adrian had no idea...
That meeting Ethan wasn't the end of Richard's plan.
May you like
It was only the beginning.
