Chapter 5 â The Empire's Secret

Chapter 5 â The Empire's Secret
The black SUV disappeared into the morning traffic.
Inside, the anonymous caller placed a single instruction into an encrypted messaging app.
PHASE TWO HAS BEGUN.
Seconds later...
The message deleted itself.
Two Men, One Face
The repair garage fell strangely quiet.
Mechanics stopped working.
Customers glanced back and forth between Adrian Sinclair and Ethan Hayes.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
Ethan frowned.
"Do we know each other?"
Adrian couldn't answer.
Instead, he pulled the hospital bracelet from his pocket.
The faded words Baby A stared back at him.
Detective Daniel Mercer stepped forward.
"Mr. Hayes, we need to ask you a few questions."
Ethan looked confused.
"Is this about my mother?"
Mercer exchanged a quick glance with Adrian.
"Maybe."
Ethan's expression changed.
"My mother died six years ago."
"What happened?"
"Heart failure."
He paused.
"But before she died..."
"...she kept saying I should never trust the Sinclair family."
Adrian felt as though someone had punched him in the chest.
The Emergency Board Meeting
That afternoon...
Sinclair Global's boardroom was filled with lawyers, executives, and auditors.
The atmosphere was tense.
The attempted murder at the wedding had already sent the company's stock price tumbling.
Now...
The questions surrounding Adrian's identity threatened to destroy what remained.
Senior attorney Helen Brooks placed three sealed folders on the polished conference table.
"We've completed the preliminary review."
Adrian looked up.
"What did you find?"
Helen took a slow breath.
"I'm afraid it's much worse than anyone imagined."
The First Will
She opened the oldest folder.
"This is Edward Sinclair's original will."
The document was dated twenty-nine years earlier.
It stated:
All assets shall remain in trust until my lawful biological heir reaches the age of thirty.
Adrian frowned.
"I've seen my father's will."
Helen nodded.
"You've seen the revised version."
She slid a second document across the table.
It looked nearly identical.
Except for one paragraph.
All assets transfer immediately to Adrian Sinclair upon my death.
Helen spoke quietly.
"The signature is genuine."
"The paragraph isn't."
Silence filled the room.
One of the board members whispered,
"Someone altered the will."
Helen nodded.
"And not just once."
Layers of Deception
More documents appeared.
Every revision benefited someone different.
Different trustees.
Different voting rights.
Different ownership percentages.
It was a maze of legal manipulation.
Chief Financial Officer Mark Ellis leaned forward.
"How many versions exist?"
Helen answered,
"Seven."
The room erupted in disbelief.
"Seven?"
"Each one filed in a different jurisdiction."
Adrian rubbed his forehead.
"So..."
"Which one is real?"
Helen met his eyes.
"We don't know."
The Hidden Owners
The forensic accountants connected Sinclair Global's ownership records to offshore corporations.
Within hours...
A shocking pattern emerged.
Forty-three percent of Sinclair Global's shares...
Were not owned by the Sinclair family.
They belonged to shell companies spread across five countries.
Mercer frowned.
"Who controls them?"
The lead accountant typed rapidly.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Blackwood Holdings.
No executive recognized it.
Helen searched the corporate registry.
The company had been incorporated twenty-nine years earlier.
The same week the babies were switched.
Its listed beneficiary stunned everyone.
Trustee: Samuel Graves.
Adrian looked toward Samuel, who had been quietly sitting in the back of the room.
"You own nearly half my company?"
Samuel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"I've been protecting it."
Samuel's Promise
Every eye turned toward the elderly engineer.
Samuel stood.
"I never wanted wealth."
"I wanted evidence."
He reached into his satchel and removed an old leather-bound ledger.
"This is the original ownership agreement."
Helen carefully examined the faded pages.
Edward Sinclair's signature.
Samuel Graves' signature.
A third signature.
One no one expected.
Judge Eleanor Hayes.
Mercer frowned.
"Ethan's mother?"
Samuel nodded.
"She wasn't only a nurse."
"She became a judge years later."
"And before she died..."
"She refused to let Edward destroy every copy of this agreement."
Adrian stared at the signatures.
"What agreement?"
Samuel answered softly.
"If Edward ever manipulated the company's succession..."
"...control would automatically transfer into protective trust."
"Until the rightful heir was identified."
The room became silent.
Ethan Learns the Truth
Mercer visited the repair garage once more.
This time...
He carried a folder.
Ethan invited him into the small office.
"I've never been inside a police investigation before."
Mercer smiled faintly.
"I wish this were simpler."
He placed the DNA report on the desk.
Ethan looked at it.
Then looked again.
"I don't understand."
Mercer spoke gently.
"The woman who raised you..."
"...loved you deeply."
"Nothing changes that."
Ethan's hands trembled.
"But?"
"But she wasn't the woman who gave birth to you."
Ethan slowly sat down.
"My whole life..."
"I wondered why I never looked like anyone in my family."
He stared through the office window.
"So who am I?"
Mercer answered honestly.
"We're still trying to find out."
Vanessa's Second Confession
Meanwhile...
Vanessa requested another meeting with investigators.
"I remembered something."
Mercer listened carefully.
"Richard once asked me a strange question."
"What question?"
"He asked..."
"If you could erase one person's identity forever..."
"...how much would it be worth?"
Mercer's expression hardened.
"What did you say?"
"I laughed."
"I thought it was hypothetical."
She covered her face.
"It wasn't."
A Name Hidden in Plain Sight
Late that evening...
Helen Brooks continued reviewing Edward Sinclair's private correspondence.
Most letters concerned routine business.
One envelope, however, had never been mailed.
It was addressed simply:
To My Son
Inside was a handwritten note.
If you are reading this, then the truth has escaped me.
Forgive me for giving you a borrowed name.
One day, you must decide whether Sinclair Global belongs to blood...
...or to the man worthy of leading it.
There was no signature.
Only Edward Sinclair's personal seal.
Helen immediately called Adrian.
"You need to come back."
"What happened?"
"I think your father knew..."
"Knew what?"
Helen looked at the final page inside the envelope.
Attached was a faded map.
It marked a remote estate deep in the mountains.
Across the top, someone had written two chilling words in red ink:
SECOND HEIR
As Adrian silently stared at the map, Samuel whispered from behind him,
"I prayed no one would ever find that place."
Adrian slowly turned.
"What is it?"
Samuel closed his eyes.
"The one secret..."
May you like
"...Edward buried even deeper than you."
